Kokosova palma (Cocos nucifera) drvenasta je biljka iz porodice palmi koja je
rasprostranjena u tropskim krajevima, pogotovu na obalama i otocima Tihog i Indijskog
oceana. Njeno ime potječe od grčke riječi сосо (zrno, plod). Pod tim imenom kokosova
palma je poznata svuda u svetu, a svuda u svetu se i koristi.
Legenda kaže da je ponikla na tlu Polinezije iz jemena u koje se pretvorila neostvarena
ljubav lepe poglavičine kćeri po imenu Hina i siromašnog, neuglednog mladića Aala. Ne
mogavši živeti bez voljene, mladić je umro, a iz njegovog groba koji je Hina natapala
suzama izniklo je neobično drvo: tanko, vitko i toliko visoko da je nadmašilo okolnje
rastinje. Krošnjom je dodirivalo nebo uzdižući ljubav u večne, božanske visine. Da bi ga
Hina mogla gledati, orah je dobio Aalov lik. Može ga vidjeti svatko tko oljušti kokos, kažu
i danas Polinežani. Na čvrstoj opni postoje tri tanja dijela koja se mogu probiti. To su oči i
usta mladog Aala.
Na ovu legendu nadovezuje se i druga, urezana na jednoj kamenoj ploči nađenoj na
Filipinima. Po njoj, kokosova palma je nebesko drvo nastalo od zvijezde, na koju svojim
oblikom krošnja i podsjeća. Darovano je ljudima voljom božanskih sila i toči iz sebe
"napitak života".

have potent anti-viral properties.
According to a study published in the Journal Evidence Based Complementary and
Alternative Medicine, when unrefined coconut oil is consumed, “the MCTs are
broken down into individual medium chain fatty acids and monoglycerides,
which can kill or inactivate pathogenic microorganisms inside the body. The
antiviral action, attributed to monolaurin (the monoglyceride of lauric acid), is that
of solubilizing the lipids and phospholipids in the envelope of the pathogenic
organisms causing the disintegration of their outer membrane. There is also
evidence that MCFA interfere with the organism’s signal transduction and the
antimicrobial effect in viruses is due to interference with virus assembly and
viral maturation.”

In his in vitro study, Dayrit looked into two main mechanisms of coconut oil against SARS-
CoV-2.
The first mechanism, he describes, is similar to the chemical basis for washing one’s
hands with soap, which is a surfactant, a compound that “makes the molecules slipperier, so
they are less likely to stick to themselves and more likely to interact with oil and grease.”
Monolaurin acts like a surfactant that directly “attacks” and “destroys” the virus
membrane which is a lipid or an oily-type organic compound.
The second mechanism happens inside the cell: Lauric acid inhibits the development of
the virus but only in a “dose-dependent and reversible manner.” Dayrit said this means that
“it only works if the virus concentration is not so high” and the antiviral property
disappears when lauric acid is removed.

Researchers think coconut oil may help treat COVID-19 patients
“Coconut oil is a unique vegetable oil in that it has a high proportion of lauric acid; no other widely
consumed vegetable oil has this,” explains Dayrit. “When ingested into the body, the body’s lipase
enzymes release metabolites, which are the active compounds—mainly monolaurin and lauric acid.”
Monolaurin is used by the food industry as an emulsifier and natural preservative against bacteria and is
also the active ingredient in many dermatological preparations, Dayrit says. Together, monolaurin and
lauric acid have the physicochemical property of being able to destroy the membrane of lipid-coated
viruses. The antiviral activities of lauric acid and monolaurin were first noted in a 1979 study and later in
1982 [pdf]. Because the virus that causes COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) is a lipid-
coated virus, coconut oil seems promising.
The amount of lauric acid found in VCO ranges from 45% to 53% of total fatty acids, depending on the age,
variety, and location of the coconut. Because CVO is readily available and no toxicity has been observed in
several acute dose studies, it could be easy for patients to access.
