• Identify dimensions of wellness.
• Discuss wellness on a personal level.
• Apply wellness principles to healthcare related

Wellness
• Wellness is a concept that is subjective.
– Means it is defined b the individual and the culture
that the individual is living in.
• Wellness is a holistic concept.
– It includes body, mind, social and spiritual domains.
• Wellness does not mean everything is perfect.
– Wellness means that the person is able to live the life
they desire, and that they have balance.
– **How does this reflect back to human needs?**
Physical Wellness
• This is the easiest to measure and monitor in
medicine.
– Focus on preventative measures.
• Nutrition
• Physical Fitness
• Avoiding Risk Factors
• Preventative Measures such as vaccines, check ups,
screenings etc.
Emotional or Mental Wellness
• This is the primary focus of psychologists and other
mental health professionals.
• Wellness in this dimension means that:
– An person has a realistic idea about themselves and their
environment
– They are processing and coping with life events in healthy
ways.
– Are able to be productive
– Contributes to family and community life
**Some things, like sleep, impact many levels of wellness**
Social Wellness
• Social wellness has to do with your
relationship with others and yourself.
– Foster and build healthy, respectful relationships.
– Avoid unhealthy and abusive people.
– Able to communicate effectively with others.
– Develops a support system and is a support
system for others.
Spiritual Wellness
• This is a deep concept that is difficult to
measure or assess.
• People who are spiritually well look a lot like
people who self actualize.
– They see purpose in life
– The see meaning in life events and interactions
with others.
– They live a life reflecting their personal beliefs and
values.
Applying Concepts of Wellness
• In this unit, we are going to develop and
personal wellness plan (we will begin
tomorrow).
– First we will self assess dimensions of wellness.
– Then we will set wellness goals.
– Then, we will reflect.
• We will build this assignment like a portfolio.
– Will will complete several parts and it will all add
up to a SM grade.
