This document summarizes research on gender stereotypes in middle school band instruments. It shows that the middle school band studied has gender stereotypical instrument assignments, with more girls playing clarinets and flutes and more boys playing trombones and trumpets. Previous research also found these stereotypes. The girls in the band tended to socialize more and have an identified leader, while the boys focused more on refining their instrumental skills with no clear leader. Both groups were undergoing the socialization process of acquiring culture through their band experiences.
