Sexuality refers to an individual's physical, psychological, social, emotional, and spiritual characteristics regarding their attitudes and behaviors related to sex. Gender affects sexuality through cultural expectations of how males and females should act. Despite societal norms, some people choose to act in ways that contradict expectations of their gender or expand their sexual preferences beyond heterosexuality. Adolescents often get informal sexual knowledge from peers, but this can be inaccurate. Parents and family can provide effective sexual education when discussions are not anxious or lacking in skills. The media also provides information but may focus on scare tactics or commercialization of sex.
