An improvised explosive device (IED) is a homemade bomb constructed from nonmilitary components designed to destroy, injure or distract. IEDs are used because they are inexpensive, effective weapons that can be easily constructed using readily available instructions and materials. IEDs typically consist of a power source, initiator, explosive material and switch, and can be initiated remotely through command wiring or autonomously. They are often concealed in everyday containers for transport.
