THE CITY OF THE FUTURE: MY VISION
 This project is part of my application to IE University for September 2017.
 I have chosen Question 4: How do you envision the city of the future?
 The format chosen is a SlideShare presentation combining text and
photographs. All pictures have been taken by myself with a Canon EOS1200
camera.
INTRODUCTION
 By 2050 almost 70% of the world population will live in urban areas.
 Therefore, the city of the future must be able to respond to enormous
challenges.
 Which are those challenges?
1) Citizens’ needs first
2) Transport
3) Sustainability
4) Technology
MY VISION: HOW DOES THE CITY OF THE FUTURE
RESPOND TO THOSE CHALLENGES?
1.-Citizens’ needs first
 The city develops according to the citizens’needs.
 Citizens are actively engaged in the decision-making process of the city through
consultations, committees, workshops, etc.
 There are public-private partnerships that develop interesting and well managed projects.
 The urban policy promotes social integration: no ghettos or spatial segregation, multi-
purpose spaces combining leisure, shopping and other activities, giving dynamism and
favouring human relations.
 Culture is accessible to all.
 Green areas enable citizens to be in contact with nature.
Berlin, November 2015
I like the fact that people are enjoying sport facilities in a park surrounded by
a group of buildings. It seems to be a social integrated neighbourhood,
located in the city center.
The Sony Center of
Berlin is perhaps
the best example of
a multi-purpose
space. It is a
building complex
which hosts offices,
shops, restaurants,
a museum, hotel
rooms and a
cinema. It is one of
my favourite places
in Berlin!
Market Hall in Rotterdam. (This photo is not mine)
This is the Market
Hall in Rotterdam.
It is an arch-
shaped building. It
has offices and
appartments on
top. The ground
floor is occupied
by a large market
and restaurants. It
extends
underground with
additional levels.
Tiergarten, Berlin Park in Rotterdam
Public spaces located in the center of both cities. In the city of the future, art and
nature are accessible to all.
2.- Transport and mobility
 Transport and mobility are among the biggest challenges of cities, both in
terms of pollution and congestion.
 In the city of the future there is a quality public transport system. It is a well-
connected network, free of charge for the users, that covers all city areas.
 Connections are essential. Airports and train stations are easily accessed.
 Citizens have changed their habits. They use alternative modes of
tranpsoport: they ride, they walk. The city center is free of cars.
In this photo of Rotterdam we see alternative transport to cars:
water-taxi and tram.
Bike-parking in BrusselsTwo bikes on a bridge, Berlin.
Alternative transport facilities are promoted. There is a wide range
of possibilities
3.- Sustainability
 The city of the future is sustainable: energy consumption is reduced and climate
change tackled.
 Buildings are environmental friendly; they generate their own energy and
reduce consumption in heating, cooling, etc. They are carbon neutral.
 The transport emits less CO2, because public and private vehicles are electric.
 Consumer behaviour has changed significantly. We consume less and more
ecological. We recycle. We reduce waste.
 Waste management has improved. We live in a circular economy (waste is
reused and reinjected in the economy).
Berlin, November 2015. A self-sufficient
building with a low-energy balance.
Parking place in Rotterdam
surrounded by plants: it might
only be as decoration but it gives
the image of a clean city that
respects the environment.
4.- Technology
 The city of the future is a smart city.
 A smart city is a city that uses big data and technology as a management tool.
 The transport system is interconnected and dynamic, having in mind peak hours
and meterological situation.
 Buildings are also smart. They are designed for minimising energy consumption.
Energy is measured and regulated by intelligent devices, like smart meters.
 Citizens play an important role in the design of their homes, because technology
allows flexibility, making it easier to adapt to personal choices.
Downtown Rotterdam. A very modern district where Architecture plays a
key role: buildings are smart, sustainable, modern but also beautiful.
To conclude…
 The city of the future is smart.
 The city of the future is user-friendly.
 The city of the future has the best transport network.
 The city of the future is sustainable and ecological.
 The city of the future is a good place to live for citizens.
