Indigenous breed: the term used to describe animals those which are found
and characteristics within the country are known as indigenous breed or local
or native breeds
Indigenous goat breeds: khari, terai, sinhal, chyangra
Indigenous sheep breeds: lampuchhre, baruwal, kage, bhyanglung
Exotic breed: the term used to describe animals foreign to a region. Those
animals which are introduced from abroad are known as exotic breed
Exotic goat breed: jamunapari, barbari, black Bengal, saanen, anglo- nubbin,
boer
Exotic breed of sheep: merino, rambullet, border Leicester, lincon
Species: a species refers to a group of living organism, which
consist of similar characteristics and breed to produce a fertile
offspring. Species may contain several breeds.
Breed: animals having a common origin and characteristics that
distinguish them from other groups with in same species. A
breed is smaller than a species. Khari and sinhal are two types of
breed of the species of goat.
Characteristics of Indigenous Breed of Goat
There are four commonly recognized and identified goat breeds in Nepal. The goat
population is estimated to comprise 9% terai goats, 50% khari, 35% sinhal, and 6%
chyangra.
1. Khari:
 This is the most important and prolific breed of goat found in the lower mid hills of
Nepal and it suitable for meat production.
Khari goat are relatively small with body weight ranging between 20-40kg.
They generally produce first kid by the age of 16 month with the kidding interval of 9
month.
Twinning is very common
The average body weight for male and female is 28 -40 and 17-26 kg respectively

Sinhal are generally found in high hills (1500-3000m above the sea level)
They are generally kept with baruwal sheep as a mixed flock
The characteristics are hardiness, and walking ability.
This breed comprises about 35% of total goat production of the country
The average adult body weight for male and female sinhal goat is 42 and 32kg
They are generally black, light brown and white in color with coarse hairs covering the
body.
Both male and female have horn.
They produce kid by the age of 2 years with kidding interval of one year
2. Sinhal
3. Terai:
 terai goat constitute about 9% of the total population of nepal and found in the
southern most plains (terai).
coat color vary from black, white, brown, brown mixed with red, back with white
marking, ash, color and black and white on ear.
The average adult body weight of male terai goat is 30-35 kg and that of female is 18-
32 kg
The average age at first kidding is 15-16 month and the kidding interval is 7-8 months

4. Chyangra:
 these are found in the trans Himalayan region of nepal above (2000m above the sea level) and
are raised under migratory system along with bhyanglung sheep.
The population has been estimated to be above 6%
Horns are long, thick, twisted upward and backwards,
They have coarse but silk long hair reaching upto the knees, which a fine under-coat of
pashmina or cashmere is present.
Most of the chyangra are white or black with stripes in the face, through various colors are also
present.
The average body weight is 35-40 kg
Chyangra produce the first kid by the age of 2 years
Characteristics of Exotic Breed of
Goat
1. Jamunapari:
This is dual purpose (meat and milk) breeds originated in India (between jamuna,
gangs and Chambal rivers).
It is a tall and large breed of goat. The adult body size of jamunapari is around 65-
75 kg and 40-45 kg for male and female respectively
Mostly black, white or light brown are commonly found.
The typical character of this breed is a highly convex nose called ‘Roman nose’,
very long flat and dropping ear
This breed has been in Nepal for improving the local breed for cross breeding

The breed of this goat is found Bangladesh, Bengal, bihar Assam
This breed is predominant colour is black but it is also found in brown, white or grey
The black Bengal goat is small in size but its body structure is tight, its horns are small
and legs are short.
An adult male goat weight about 25-30 kg and female 20-25kg
The breed known for excellent mutton quality and it is known for poor in milk
production
The female goat becomes pregnant twice a year and twin or triplets birth are common
Disease resistance is very high

This breed is originated from Barbara of Somali land in Africa and commonly
found in U.P. and hariyana in india and west Pakistan
The barbari is small in size, straight facial line, short erect ear, pendulous udder,
shorts legs, color: white with brown spot
Full mature weight is 35-40 kg
The age at first kidding is 588 days with kidding interval of 274 days.
Twins per kidding is common

This breed is originated in Switzerland. It is famous for milk production throughout
the world and known as milk queen of the world
The goat breed is dull white, and ear are flopped towards front side, and have a
small hairs.
Male horn but female hornless
Mature weight 65-70 kg, large udder, ear are upright erect
After parturition this breed gives average 3-5 kg milk yield per day milk production
Normally this breed give birth give a kid per birth
4. Saanen
5. Anglo- Nubian:
The anglo- Nubian is a british breed of goat.
It has a long pendulous ear and roman nose,
The breed has black, dark brown with or without white markings
This breed is hornless but some horned males,
Body weight is 60-80 kg
The breed is mostly used in meat and milk purpose with 5% milk fat and the breed
is also known as jersey cow of the goat
5. Anglo- Nubian:

This breed is mostly used for milk and meat purpose
Originated in Punjab and Haryana of India and has been introduced in terai
region of Nepal
Characteristics are: small in size, long ear, roman nose, horns horizontally
backward spirally twisted, the tail is small and thin.
The udder is large and developed having big conical teats
The age at first kidding is 762 days with kidding interval f 368 days.
Beetal:

This breed was originated in south Africa and name is derived from the
dutch word ‘boer’ meaning farmer.
This breed was developed for meat purpose and it can be reared in all type
of climate
Boar characteristics are: white body, brown head, horned, can give twin birth
ad gives birth 3 times with in 2 years. It can give 3 time birth
Adult boer weight more than 100 kg, rapid growth rate
This breed been reared for detail research in goat research center, Bandipur
in 2065 B.S.
