- mobile, social, and big data/analytics-driven applications and workloads. Looming on the horizon are Internet of Things (IoT) applications, which will drive exponential increase of data that needs to be gathered, stored, processed/analysed and transported. Latency issues. Organizations are investing in customer-facing workloads to support their digital transformation. This shift is requiring datacenters to be near large communication hubs and densely populated areas. In the past, datacenters were built near corporate headquarters, but today, in a world where 100ms latency is unacceptable, datacenter resources need to be placed where the data is generated and used – the edge. Bandwidth reduction. Delivering content from centralized datacenters quickly burdens networks because of the vast amount of data. In the case of delivery of media/video, delivering data from a centralized datacenter would be cost prohibitive. By deploying edge datacenter resources, datacenters can reduce the amount of bandwidth required to deliver content. Data Sovereignty and Security. Regulations and audits on data storage and transport, as well as securing data stores, will become more stringent in the near future as governments and the industry focus on protecting the public and data. A carmaker that wants to run the "software brain" for its ultra-robotized factory floor will need cloud-type infrastructure, but on its own premises. Similarly, an entertainment company streaming VR experiences in a region will require a lot of compute and graphic processing capacity, but due to bandwidth constraints will force to implement those in a localized facility much like broadcast and cable TV operators in the past. Measure "network distance" rather than physical distance before deciding on a localized cloud. Private and public connectivity will be a deciding factor for many such workloads Connectivity will be a deciding factor in edge ownership decisions and deployments
- What can you today that you were not able to do before DCIM? How long did it take to implement DCIM? Did you integrate DCIM to your ITSM systems? What other systems? What was your biggest hurdle in terms of implementation? What is the one piece of advice you would give to someone looking to implement a DCIM? (Looks like Jennifer is going to ask this in the general session) What was the biggest decision factor in choosing your DCIM provider? (Jennifer asks about the criteria – but this is a slight twist) Which features/functions within the DCIM are you absolute “go to’s” – the ones you or your team find to be the most useful? Who or what functions were represented on the decision making team? Was the initial project and purchase a facilities or IT decision? And where did the budget come from – an extension of an existing project or for this project alone?
