Innovation Configuration Map for Writer’s Workshop Implementation 2017- 2018 Using the MAISA ELA Curriculum Component 1: Implements Writer’s Workshop Level 1/Novice Attended the professional development about Writer’s Workshop and has implemented at least one of the Units of Study. 2 Uses elements of Writer’s Workshop to implement the Units of Study from the MAISA ELA curriculum. Uses rubrics and checklists to assess student work. 3 Uses a predictable structure for Writer’s Workshop to implement the instructional and assessment components of the MAISA ELA curriculum to inform instruction resulting in student achievement. Level 4/Expert Provides high quality Writer’s Workshop everyday during writing instruction. Uses the instructional and assessment components of the MAISA ELA curriculum effectively resulting in high levels of student achievement. Component 2: Delivers Engaging Minilessons and Student Conferences Level 1/Novice Begins to personalize the minilessons provided by the MAISA ELA Units of Study. Confers with students daily. 2 Uses the minilessons provided as a guide for delivering personalized minilessons. Knows when to tell students the information and when to engage students in activity. Confers with at least 3 students daily. Provides a compliment and suggestion at each conference. 3 Engages students in minilessons that are less than 10 minutes in length that lead the students through the lesson and results in most students knowing what to do during work time. Confers with at least 3 students daily for about 5 minutes each. The conferences follow various formats depending on where students are in a particular Unit of Study. Students are comfortable conferring with the teacher. Level 4/Expert Engages students in short (5-6 minute) minilessons that smoothly lead the students through the lesson and results in students knowing what to do during work time. Confers with 3 - 5 students daily for about 5 minutes each. The conferences result in increased student productivity or quality of work. Component 3: Designs Engaging Notebook and Daily Writing Activities Level 1/Novice Encourages students to write in their notebook regularly. 2 Encourages students to write in their notebooks regularly by allowing time for generating ideas individually and cooperatively, and exploring those ideas with freewrites. 3 Encourages students to write in their notebooks daily by allowing ample time for generating ideas individually and cooperatively, and exploring those ideas with freewrites. Level 4/Expert Inspires students to write in their notebooks daily using techniques that motivate students to write for audiences beyond the classroom.
