The Football Is A Sport
In New York, if you stand in the street and scream football, people in the streets will all
understand what you mean, American football. That s two team of eleven big players wearing
protective pads and running holding an egg shaped ball, while if you do the same in Paris or
London the locals will assume you are referring to soccer. Two teams of eleven players kicking and
passing a perfectly round black and white ball. Though, the name footballis used in both sides of
the Atlantic Ocean, it s totally two deferent sports, both in term of playing and rules. America
football is a sport played by two team of eleven players on a rectangular field divided into 10
yards to a total of 100yards, the width is a bit wider than fifty three yards and with goalposts
shape like letter H on each end of the field. The team with control of the ball, called the offense
team, attempts to advance the ball downfield, by running or passing the ball or by throwing
down the field. While the opposing team aims to stop their advance and take control of the ball
themselves. The object of the game is to simply outscore your opponent. This is accomplished by
advancing the football up field and scoring as many touchdowns, or field goals, (kicking the egg
shaped ball through the upper goal post), as possible. While the other team will be holding back
the advance they make, hence, becoming the defense side and preventing the other team to as few
touchdowns as possible.

Essay about Children’s Literature in Jamaica
Children s Literature in Jamaica
As children in the United States, we grow up listening to the stories of Dr. Seuss and Curious
George as we fall off to sleep to the sound of our parent s voices echoing in our dreams. As we
start to grow older and the poetry of Shel Silverstein s, Where the Sidewalk Ends no longer holds
our imagination as much as it did at eight years old, we begin to read stories that are a reflection
of the environment we live within. We engaged ourselves in the lives of such characters as the
Hardy Boys and Willy Wonka.
What these stories lacked however, are the social issues that are ever present in today s society. Not
all of American children s literature is without social content, but the literature many of ... Show

Children s folklore and literature thrives in the stories of Anancy. Anancy is an indestructible and
irresistible spider who is both, fooler and fool, maker and unmade, wily and stupid, subtle and
gross, the High God s accomplice and his rival. (Dance, 11) Anancy is generally a figure of
admiration whose cunning and scheming nature reflects the indirection and subtleties necessary for
survival and occasionally victory for the Black man in a racist society.
In Jamaica, Anancy, the descendant of a West African deity takes on special significance in a
society, which has its roots in a system of slavery. It is as though every slave strove to be
Anancy and he who achieved the Spider form became a kind of hero. Anancy s greatest attributes
however, are his character flaws. Anancy is far from a perfect folk hero, and many of his
characteristics are egotistical, selfish, and ignorant. Regardless of the wealth of character flaws he
possesses, Anancy has an irresistibility that has been preserved in its most uncorrupted form. As
Rex Nettleford states in his introduction to Walter Jekyll s, Jamaican Song and Story, in order to
cope with an unstraight and crooked world one needs unstraight and crooked paths. (Jekyll, xiii) As
a child, playwright and author, Louise Bennett recalls that everything that happened in the world
was caused by Anancy. (Jekyll, ix) As a

Information Technology Influences on NFL, NASCAR and Other Sports
Information technology has influenced sports in many ways. Not only has it influenced sports in

The 1st Ten Line is a yellow line that is superimposed on the field so that viewers at home can
see just how far the offensive team has to go to reach a first down. This is helpful in that it
allows first time viewers to get a better grasp on the game and the overall offensive objective,
which is to gain first downs until the team either kicks a field goal or scores a touchdown. The
following is a picture of the 1st Ten Line:
Figure 1: The yellow line
With the same technology used for the 1st Ten Line the telestrator enables broadcasters to draw

Perhaps the most innovative technology has come in the world of auto racing, specifically
NASCAR. Sportvision has created many new technological advances that make watching
NASCAR more enjoyable and fan friendly. RACEf/x is a car tracking system that collects car
performance data from every Winston Cup car five times per second, providing speed, position,

Code Talker Leadership
Bravery is an island in on ocean of fear. To be brave, is not to be fearless; Instead it is to be
fearful, yet remain unmoved by that fear. This applies to the novel Code Talker by Joseph
Bruchac. This is because of how the main character Kii Yazhi demonstrates leadership in the
novel. Kii is a Navajo learning the American way at school soon to find out that he wants to
become a Marine. Kii goes from going to boarding school to learning codes to communicate while
being a marine. Kii becomes a marine to fight for his country, beliefs, and family. Kii Yazhi
demonstrates leadership characteristics throughout the whole novel. At the time Ned Begay,
formerly known by his Navajo name Kii Yazhi meaning little boy, was only 16. Yet his age didn t

Even before this message Kii Yazhi wanted to become a marine to fight for his country, beliefs,
and family. His family promised him that if the war would still be going on he would have their
blessing, so when Ned Begay turned 16 his parents gave their blessing and went with him to get
signed up. This has had a positive effect, because Ned Begay got to follow his dreams, protect
his country, defend his family, and make his beliefs stand out. The second leadership
characteristic he has shown is inspiration. Ned Begay inspired people because of how he puts
others before himself. While in the foxhole he dug up the Japanese were executing their well
thought out plan next to him was another marine about twice the size of Ned who had a
wounded arm. Even though Ned Begay s fingernails were broken and bleeding he still helped a
fellow marine in need. This has had a positive effect because tying that handkerchief around
Georgia Boy s arm made his risk of getting infection smaller and making the arm worse where as he

Persuasive Essay On Being A Outsider
Being an outsider is a position that an individual does not fit in with the rest of society. Areas of
society are often called clique at which we feel like we must coordinate our actions to follow
and pleases. Those actions leads to the anonymous question should the outside, those who do not
follow the rest be embraced or rejected. Corresponding with the rights of our world, we are seen
as equal, yet we do not always follow that. Outsiders should be rejected, providing them growth,
individuality through independence and, crucial life skills. Like a seed planted in the soil
growing into a nice tree. Similar to the seed outsiders are born and left to grow. They are living ,
breathing, eating and drinking yet they are not as high on the competition list as others are who
follow the same steps. With that said the seed or outsiders are left to grow while being independent
they from senses of personal goals which allow them to transform their minds around whatever that
goalmay be, possible career, academics or even financial goals at which only make them better and
stronger people. Each of these people begin with disadvantages that could have, and at times did
exclude them from normal society. But each turned their differences into advantages (Clark).
Critics say that the growth is in the wrong areas they should be developing growth in terms of
friends and social rankings. Arguing that starts with the everlasting example of success that is
displayed by the outsider who

Multilayered Structured Sun
2. The sun being a multilayered structure has 3 main layers. There is the Chromosphere, the
Photosphere and the Corona. The photosphere is mainly the thinnest layer of gas where Earth
receives the sunlight from and convection occurs right under the photosphere. The motion of hot
materials rising while the cooler materials sink and this causes granulation. Granulation also known
as the mottled appearance is the dark regions and that is how the energy inside the sunis transferred
out.
7. When looking at the sun you would imagine that the surface would be boiling. But since the
surface of the sun is actually pretty cool it causes very few hydrogen atoms to have electrons in the
excited states. With the hydrogen atom providing a limited amount of excited electrons it would
cause us not to see it on the spectral line. But unlike the hydrogen being abundant, calcium isn t.
Calcium has enough electrons to transfer from the ground state and make an appearance on the
spectral lines because it isn t abundant.
9. We don t have evidence that sunspots are magnetic but we do know that the sunspots are caused
by the magnetic activity amongst the sun. Also with the understanding of the Zeeman effect we can
conclude how strong the magnetic fields are that cause the sunspots. In conclusion we see that
sunspots are in fact apart of the magnetic field in the layers of the suns atmosphere.
10. To fully understand the sun cycle many scientists use the Babcock model. The Babcock model

Twilight, By Stephanie Meyer
The novel I read was Twilight, by Stephanie Meyer.
My questions for the director are how was his experience making a film involving vampires and
wolves? Was he excited or nervous? Also if, he filmed other movies like this one. If he did, was
it different or similar to Twilight? How is this movie unique compared to other movies he has
directed? Did the director enjoy working with the actors? Did he find it weird how a vampire and a
human can fall in love? Also how a wolf be in love with a human let alone the same human the
vampire happened to be in love with? Was the love triangle confusing him?
My question for the actors will be how did it make them feel acting like vampires and wolves
and how was it uncommon compared to other movies they acted in. Also, how did it make the
vampire feel that the wolf fell in love with the same person he was. How did it make Bella feel
that two men were in love with her and one was a vampire and the other was a wolf? How did it
make her feel that the vampire whom she happened to be in love with can kill her on accident at
any moment? Did she like that she was in love with him or did she wish she wasn t in love? Did
they like the characters they were acting to be? These would be my honor to ask the characters. ...

Analysis Of The Fall Of A City By Alden Nowlan
Alden Nowlan in the story The Fall of a City demonstrates through imagery, foreshadowing, and
dramatic irony that one should not openly judge another, as it can greatly impact the said
person. Firstly, imagery is used when Teddy s uncle makes a comment about Teddy, and Teddy
compares his uncle s face to an antagonist from his imaginary kingdom. For example, He s got
his head in the clouds again. His uncle laughed mirthlessly. Out of the corner of his eye Teddy
looked at his uncle s round, florid face and reflected on the resemblance to Zikla, Duke of Anders
(Nowlan 32). Clearly, this quote illustrates Teddy s reaction after hearing his uncle s comments
towards him as he did not acknowledge this in a positive way. Teddy s uncle rudely laughs at him
afterword which proves... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, He could not hear the strumming of rain on the roof. There was no rumble of
Donovan cannon (23). Consequently, this quote describes the thoughts of Teddy as he was
viewing the rain outside through his living room window. Teddy cannot hear the rain anymore
which symbolizes the end of the war. The sound of Donovan cannon, represented by the
strumming of rain on the roof has also seized. Foreshadowing here is used to indicate the
coming impact, directed towards Teddy, as he is the king of the imaginary kingdom. Finally,
the author uses dramatic irony when Teddy s uncle discovers his creation in the attic. That great
big lummox has been playing with paper dolls...And 11 year old boy! The man choked trying to
restrain his laughter (33). Hence, this quote proclaims how Teddy s uncle judges him in a variety
of ways. Teddy s uncle judges him for playing with paper dolls, mocks Teddy by calling him a
lummox, then the uncle proceeds to extensively laugh at Teddy. The reader knows that Teddy s
creation is bound to get discovered and criticized, but Teddy does not know

Willy Russell s Use of Devices to Invite the Audience to...
Shirley Valentine, a story about a middle aged house wife whose life couldn t be more mundane;
she has no one but the wall to talk to. Shirley Valentine, written by Willy Russell, is one of his
most famous screenplays. This essay will look at how Russell invites the audience to
sympathise with Shirley through his use of language, ideas and themes, the effects of dramatic
devices and characters in the play. Russell uses characters and their actions to invite us to feel
sympathy for Shirley. The way she is treated by her family and especially Joe makes the readers
feel compassion for her. It s nearly six o clock get on with gettin me tea. is one example of the way

Joe s views on women is based on some the social beliefs of the 1980s that a women s role is as a
mother and a wife. This is similar to the context because Joe is being sexist as he expects Shirley
to do the housework. Even though women did go out and work they were still expected to look
after their husbands. If the audience were to be in Shirley s shoes, they would probably be very
fed up of life and pretty miserable and depressed at how they are being treated by Joe. During the
1980s it would have been easy for women to relate to stories like Shirley s because some of them
may have faced these problems. By relating to common problems probably faced by a lot of
women Russell makes it easier for them to sympathise because Shirley s life is what they might
be living too. A lot of the screenplay has been influenced by Russell s own life. He listened to a
lot of women s stories when he worked as a women s hairdresser. This helped him understand
their problems and their feelings which he successfully portrayed in Shirley Valentine. However,
not all the characters in the screenplay invite the audience to sympathise with Shirley. This is
because they are nice to Shirley and treat her nicely. Costas is the complete opposite to Joe. While
Joe takes Shirley for granted, Costas helps Shirley enjoy her time in Greece and makes her feel
appreciated. He

How Does King Lear Commit Suicide
In William Shakespeare s tragic play, King Lear, the Earl of Gloucester believes he is about to
commit suicide by jumping off a cliff. Using dramatic irony, Gloucester s son Edgar, who is
disguised as a beggar, leads his father to the edge of the cliff to jump off, but he actually leads
Gloucester to safety. Gloucester, convinced he survived the fall, believes the gods have kept him
alive for a reason; he still has a purpose to complete. Shakespeare uses this incident as a casement
to his belief that everybody is destined by the fate of the stars; everyone has a predetermined
purpose to fulfill. Gloucester realizes he made a mistake in trusting Edmund, and after the incident

Bram Stoker unleashed his horrific creation on an unsuspecting world over one hundred years ago.
One could hardly imagine that his creature of the night would delight and inhabit the nightmares of
every generation between his and ours. Count Dracula has become an icon of evil, and is perhaps
the most widely recognized bogeyman in all of world literature. To date, there have been over one

Stoker was mesmerized by Irving s charismatic performance, but was disappointed to find only a
cursory mention of the event in the next day s Dublin Evening Mail. A second tour by Irving four
years later produced an equally unsatisfactory mention in the Mail, prompting an outraged young
Stoker to march into the offices of the newspaper and offer himself for the unpaid position of
theater critic. He got the job, and as a result, when Irving (now a star of the London stage) returned
to Dublin a third time, this time to star in Hamlet, Stoker had the opportunity to set down in print
glowing praises of his favorite actor. Irving read the review and was delighted to the extent that he
invited the young critic to supper at his hotel, and began a friendship that would last for almost
thirty years.
In the years between 1870 and 1877, Stoker, yielding to his father s wishes, followed him into a
career as civil servant in Dublin Castle. However, Stoker maintained ties to Trinity College,
returning there frequently to speak on a wide range of topics for the Philosophical Society.
In 1878, Irving took over ownership and renovation of London s Lyceum Theatre, and asked
Stoker to come to London to manage the theater and Irving s career. Stoker immediately resigned
his dreary civil service position, married a young lady he had recently been

Olaudah Equiano s Autobiography
Olaudah Equiano s autobiography moves beyond being a personal document. It provides the
reader with important historical background about the slavery system and Guinea. In the first
three chapter, Equiano tells us a lot about his native country, early years, and his kidnapping. The
people of Eboe, where Equiano is born, are very civilized. They have their own laws and
traditions. For example, the chiefs or elders of the place usually conduct the governmental
proceedings. Their laws are built on democratic basis. They hold meeting to decide upon any
dispute and punish crimes. They natives are very cooperative and organized. They all labor and
fight together from their early years. In addition, whenever a new bridegroom want to build his
house, everyone helps him and expect nothing in return. One of the natives best traits is being
pragmatic. They could make drinks, clothes, and perfumes out of simple materials. They are not
only good at manufacturing, but also trading and they even have their own currency. Unfortunately,
the natives are not perfect as Equiano tries to portray them. Even though women and men almost
wear the same clothes, which symbolizes equality, women are not considered equal to men. When a
couple marry, everything that the girls own becomes the bridegroom s property. Similarly, if a
woman cheats on her husband, she is punished severely. While it is so common to find husbands
cheating on their wives. Before moving on, it should be pointed out that in

Tragic Comedy In Catch-22
You can t stop flying unless you re crazy; you cannot not stop flying if you re sane; and the only
people who want to fly are crazy. This absurd logic, hilarious at first, is the root of Catch 22, and
is but one such absurd joke among many in the book. In Catch 22, Joseph Heller employs comedy
to illustrate how initially comical characteristics can, when pulled to the extremes, lead people to
enact cruelties. Many of the most memorable moments of Catch 22 are indisputably hilarious. One
such example is Colonel Cathcart, an indecisive squadron leader obsessed with his own self
image. Plagued by constant doubts about his every choice, Colonel Cathcart oscillates rapidly and
randomly between relying on his subordinate Colonel Korn for advice... Show more content on

In retrospect, Colonel Cathcart s blatant goalpost manipulation isn t funny anymore once you
consider that all the deaths it causes had no other reason than pointless posturing. In fact, upon
seeing its results, his actions are sickening. When has it ever been funny to give soldiers hope of
returning home just to snatch it away? Why were we laughing at this tragedy? The darker
implications of Cathcart s actions reflect twistedly on the humor of those first scenes. These
cherished, humorous moments of the book cannot be laughed at anymore without a sense of
unease. This evolution of scenes is especially clear with the novel s name. The Catch 22 in the
beginning is but a series of elaborate and absurd paradoxes. Yossarian cannot go home until he
reaches the required number of missions, but the required number of missions always increases.
It s impossible to enter Major Major s office if he s in it, but you can talk to him in his office
when he s not in the office. The initial uses of Catch 22 is that of a comedic device that revels in
the absurdity of the world. Our ability to twist logic for our own means entertains us in the novelty
of what can result from it. As the book draws to a close, however, Catch 22 starts being used with a
distinctively different connotation, shown when Yossarian escapes to Rome. There, upon entering

Teen Pregnancy
Suddenly teen pregnancy IS cool?
1.Teen pregnancy is up partly because there is less of a stigma associated with teen pregnancy
since there is more of a cultural permission to be a younger mother. The rise is also partly due to
the portrayal of celebrity teens such as Jamie Lynn Spears in the media and other cultural shifts,
giving teens the idea that having a baby is the new handbag .
2.The reason the authors use allusion in the first paragraph is to show the readers that teen
pregnancy is becoming a trend amongst celebrities and its sweeping teen culture along with it.
Whether or not the average teen thinks unplanned pregnancy is fashionable, there are numerous
celebrity and pop culture examples of hip, unmarried moms. The ... Show more content on

The author in the article is comparing the latest style to pregnancy. Media is portraying that
pregnancy is the latest trend and it is popular amongst cool celebrities. The author goes on to
compare babies as the new handbag, making it seem like carrying a baby is like carrying the most
fashionable handbag. It makes teens feel as if it s hip and they should go get one like it s a fashion
accessory.
b) Irony
Paragraph 1 I didn t believe it because Jamie Lynn s always been so conscientious. She s never late
for her curfew.
This is ironic because Jamie Lynn is the not conscientious; infact she is very irresponsible. If she
was careful she would have been able to prevent her pregnancy at such an early age.
Paragraph 2 В…just 16, who matter of factly chooses to have a baby and an open adoption rather
than an abortion. No big deal.
This is ironic because the author is using the movie Juno as an example to Jamie Lynn s
situation, making it seem like teenage pregnancy is not that big of a deal. When everyone found
out that Juno was pregnant in the movie they were very unrealistic about it and not freaking out
like most families would do. However, the readers know that teen pregnancy is a very big deal in
our society and there are a lot of drawbacks that come with it. Most

Facebook has always strived on the belief that this social network is where users connect with
not just friends but with the expansive world around them. Recently in the last several years,
some Facebook users have been expose to a world that they were not prepared or intend to see.
Gory visuals of a sinister and graphic nature that document this reality of debauchery has
become viral on some user s news feed. Images and videos of dead bodies, bloody car accidents,
mutilations and animal cruelty are a fragment of what users were exposed to during the
November 2011 gore porn link spam attack (Sarachik 2011). Facebook was able to close the
exploit with the help of Facebook s own technician after being informed of the problem. Still
images and videos depicting real life blood and gore still finds their way on Facebook, where
they can potentially be seen by hundreds of millions of users. Shortly after images of the
execution of James Foley by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) appeared online on
Facebook, a safety advisor for the company calls for the implementation of safety measures that
would prevent users from accidentally accessing the images (Kelion 2014). In recent years
Facebook have been increasingly used by some users on the social network to post graphic content
and obscene pornographic material and the reason for this is because the social network is not
effectively regulating and monitoring the content. The reasons for why Facebook needs

Utilitarianism Gay Marriage
Gay Marriages
I strongly agree with the legalization of the gay marriages in many of the societies even though it
is a subject that elicits mixed reactions and opposition from some quarters. The utilitarianism
approach that seeks to establish whether the end justifies the means can be applied whereby the
benefits of such legalization and the disadvantages are compared. When gay marriages are
legalized, the beneficiaries will include the gays, adopted children and the society as a whole.
Opponents such include religion, which argues that marriage is a sacred institution to be shared
between a man and woman and that marriage, should serve a higher purpose of reproduction.
However, the opponents would not suffer in effect since they only claim

Prince Vs Pauper
How would you like to switch places with the president, a pop star, or maybe just one of your
parents? What do you think the pros and cons of this would be? This is what happened in the
Prince and the Pauper by Samuel Clemens under the name Mark Twain. It is about two boys
who were born on the same day where one was wanted, one was not. Each boy was not happy with
his own life at an older age, so they switched places. Tom Canty became a prince, and Edward
Tudor became a pauper.
Some people may believe that the Mickey Mouse version of Prince and the Pauper is the best
version, but in fact the live action version of Prince and the Pauper is superior. For instance, the
Mickey Mouse version is more school friendly. The graphics are cartoony and the characters...

To add on, the live action follows the original plot. In the live action, Tom was invited into the
castle by the prince, Edward Canty (Foster). This exemplifies that the live action is better because
that is a show of kindness toward his subjects that develops the character. Not to mention, the live
action is also more detailed. Each action and facial expression showed a kind of emotion and the
movements of each character portray that character s personality. This shows that the live action is
more appealing because its realism presents each point better. Equally important, all the important
characters that were missing their storyline or just missing entirely in the Mickey Mouse version
are present. The Hendon brothers have their fight, Miles becomes Edward s protector after he
switched, and John Canty beats Tom when he does any little thing wrong.
To recapitulate, the live action version of Prince and the Pauper by Foster is superior to the
Mickey Mouse version for many reasons. Truly, Prince and the Pauper is a great work of literature.
The question is...who would you switch with and

The Importance Of The Metrocables
The original objective of creating the Metrocables was to fight poverty, unemployment, violence,
and crime in Medellin (Bea, 2016). Given that both poverty and unemployment have already been
discussed, the focus now turns to crime and security. In addition to the apparent changes made in
the commercial realm that have multiplied businesses and created jobs for the previously
unemployed, residents of these neighbourhoods have noticed changes made in terms of crime and
safety. As previously touched upon, up until the 1990 s, Medellin s history of violence led to the
lack of surveillance and safety in the cityas well as in the rural areas. Over time, the Metrocables
have had a positive impact on the crime and safety sector of Medellin. Those who reside in the
neighbourhoods around the Metrocables have noticed a decrease in incidence related to gang
warfare, crime, and violence since the implementation of these aerial cable cars (Agudelo, 2013).
Since the Metrocables are a relatively new form of urban mobility in these areas, security
measures have been taken via surveillance to ensure that this mode of transportation is benefitting
people and living up to its original intentions. With the arrival of the Metrocables came great
surveillance not only in the cable car stations but even in the close surrounding areas as well.
When commuters are traveling via Metrocables, they feel safe enough to carry cash in their pocket,
a feeling they do not have while using different forms of

Chapter 14 In Development Of Children Essay
This week in class we had a discussion about Early Childhood, Read Chapter 14 in Development
of Children and Adolescents, and had our first debate over our topics. My topic was Are Father s
Really Necessary? , and I had argued the No side. Next thursday we will be doing the same topic,
but arguing the other side. One of the questions this week was, When children are being aggressive
, what should be done about the situation. When children are being agressive you should sit them
down and ask them questions about the situation. You could ask them, Does it feel good when
someone hits you? You can also ask the childwhat upset the to make them act in a violent way. If it
is something that can be fixed easily by switching activites, it should be done so. Over 20% of
children under the ageof seven have behavior/ school problems. The ratio would be 3 4/ 5, 5 7/ 8

The Monkey s Paw Essay
If you could wish for three things, would you? Would you try to change fate? In The Monkey s
Paw by W.W. Jacobs the White family uses the monkey s paw three wishes and try and change
their fate. They first wish for money, but instead the wish kills Herbert White, their son. Trying to
revive Herbert they use their second wishfor life. After Mr. White hears a knock on the door he uses
the third wish for death realizing that Herbert would not be the same person, but instead mutilated.
This short storyfits into the horror genre because of its traditional setting, outside source, and theme.
To begin with, the traditional setting of The Monkey s Paw is a big part of it being classified in
the horror genre. At the very beginning of the story, in lines 1 20, it says the night was cold and
wet and pathway s a bog and the road s a torrent . This quote makes the readers think of a run
down place that is cold, dark, and wet like someone would expect from the horror genre.
Next, the outside source of the cursed monkey paw also makes this short story part of the horror
genre. The quote in line 73 says, It had a spell put on it by an old fakir . This quote tells the
readers that the monkey s paw is cursed and as they continue reading the story more things keep

was dangerous. Concluding that Mr. White was searching for forbidden knowledge to see if the

knowledge is a common theme in the horror genre and makes The Monkey s Paw a part of the

Aesthetic Disinterestedness Analysis
Jameson Hoffman HON 3310 Dr. Hayan Charara November 17, 2017 Disinterestedness and
Distance in Modernist Aesthetics In his essay On the Origins of Aesthetic Disinterestedness
Jerome Stolnitz describes how aesthetic criticism began with Lord Shaftesbury s idea of the
virtuous man as a spectator, devoted to the very survey and contemplation of beauty in manners
and morals, the initial practical significance of disinterested is supplanted altogether by the
perceptual , a definition that would eventually grow from an ethical one to an aesthetic one (133).
While much of the tradition of aesthetic theory is built on this idea of the necessity of being
disinterested in the object in question, however, the implied inability to judge the aesthetic of
objects a viewer is interested in is extremely limiting. Immanuel Kant, an inheritor of this idea,
goes further and completely rules out any judgement from an interested viewer: everyone must
admit that a judgment about beauty, in which the least interest mingles, is very partial and is not
a pure judgment of taste (2). Both men, being of the 18th century, could never have anticipated a
Modernist aesthetic which relies heavily on the beauty of utility and inherently requires an
interested spectator. The aesthetic principles of Modernism are in many ways even entirely
incompatible with the kind of aesthetic disinterestedness Kant espoused. We must first decipher
exactly what Kant meant by an interested viewer. Kant distinguishes between adherent and free
beauty; with free beauty there is presupposed no concept of any purpose which the manifold of
the given object is to serve while human beauty (i.e. of a man, a woman, or a child), the beauty
of a horse, or a building (be it church, palace, arsenal, or summer house), presupposes a general
concept of the purpose which determines what the thing is to be... It is therefore adherent beauty
(15). To Kant the judgement of free beauty is pure because the viewer doesn t project their own
ideas and wishes onto it or become swayed by the physical pleasure that accompanies it (15). A
functional object which is good for the thing itself in accordance with its purpose, however, is a
hindrance to the the

Essay on Duddy s Focus on Wealth
In my opinion, The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, a book written by Mordecai Richler, is
ultimately about money. Simcha Kravitz, Duddy s grandfather, would tell Duddy as a child that a
man without land is nobody. These words encouraged him to live his life in a manner in which he
would do anything he could in order to obtain the land that a nobody would not possess. But
Duddy does not solely focus his desires on land; instead, his goals are set on wealth in general.
In order to acquire wealth, Duddy engages in acts of dishonesty and deceit. He does this by
exploiting the weaknesses of his friends, such as Virgil Roseboro and Yvette Durelle, while
completely disregarding the fact that by doing this, his dignity and ... Show more content on

Duddy ends up forging Virgil s signature on a check in order to access Virgil s bank account and
steal his money. Although this money help s Duddy purchase the remainder of his land, in the
process he becomes a despised and wretched tyrant. Not only does this result in the annihilation
of Duddy s friendship with Virgil, but also results in the loss of Yvette s respect for Duddy. It
becomes quite obvious that Duddy did not value his friendships as much as he did his wealth, as
if he did, he would ve earned money the proper way, as a waiter, and wouldn t have resorted to
such ruthless acts in order to attain complacency. It s quite disappointing to learn how he would
sacrifice the only loving relationship he ever had (with Yvette) just so he can obtain land.
Normally, a person who lived a life devoid of love would be desperate to acquire it. However,
Duddy still decided to pursue his dreams of owning land on the contrary to pursuing a loving
relationship that his life was in need of.
Come to think of it, Duddy s life has been morally derailed ever since he was a child. As a child,
he took advantage of the fact that as a minor, he was not susceptible to lawsuits. He broke the law
frequently in attempt to obtain more wealth. Such examples of this would include his fraudulent
behaviour with stamp companies, his selling of stolen hockey sticks, and his distribution of
pornographic comic books. In an entrepreneurial sense, Duddy had the correct goals;

Essay about History of the Computer
History of the Computer
The first devices that resemble modern computers date to the mid 20th century (around 1940
1945), although the computer concept and various machines similar to computers existed earlier.
Early electronic computers were the size of a large room, consuming as much power as several
hundred modern personal computers.[1] Modern computers are based on tiny integrated circuits
and are millions to billions of times more capable while occupying a fraction of the space.[2]
Today, simple computers may be made small enough to fit into a wristwatch and be powered from

This effort was funded by ARPA (now DARPA), and the computer network that it produced was
called the ARPANET. The technologies that made the Arpanet possible spread and evolved. In time,
the network spread beyond academic and military institutions and became known as the Internet.
The emergence of networking involved a redefinition of the nature and boundaries of the computer.
Computer operating systems and applications were modified to include the ability to define and
access the resources of other computers on the network, such as peripheral devices, stored
information, and the like, as extensions of the resources of an individual computer. Initially these
facilities were available primarily to people working in high tech environments, but in the 1990s the
spread of applications like e mail and the World Wide Web, combined with the development of
cheap, fast networking technologies like Ethernet and ADSL saw computer networking become
almost ubiquitous. In fact, the number of computers that are networked is growing phenomenally.
A very large proportion of personal computers regularly connect to the Internet to communicate and
receive information. Wireless networking, often utilizing mobile phone networks, has meant
networking is becoming increasingly ubiquitous even in mobile computing environments.

Causes Of The Great Purge In Russia
The collectivization efforts of 1928 came to a head with the central government essentially
forcing peasants to collectivize and attacking the kulaks. Initial efforts backfired with many
peasants choosing to slaughter their animals rather than give them to the collective farm. As for
the kulaks, some fled to the cities to find work while others decided to try and fight back. In
retaliation, the OGPU (secret police) acted quickly and arrested the troublemakers. Massive
numbers were deported across the country and into the Urals, Siberia, or the North. The intense
crackdown was eventually a success. By 1932, the per cent of collectivized peasant farms had
reached 62% according to official Soviet figures (Fitzpatrick, 138). The path to collectivized
farming in this time period is heavily significant for a number of reasons, namely the social

makes these trials so significant is that they showed the lengths that Stalin and his compatriots

American Culture Of People From Japan And Arab Countries
Final Essay
In the United States many different nationalities and culture have come to reside by immigrating
to this country. Although in the past being an immigrant in this country was often faced with
hardship and discrimination the dream of a better and more promising future in America has
always enticed people from places far and wide. Such has been the case with people from Japan
and Arab countries. The differences in policies and treatment in the US varied, but their reasoning
behind why their migrated is almost always for a more prosperous life. This paper aims to make a
comparison at the two groups by providing information on why they migrated and examples of
interaction between the two. It will further examine past and present policies and its effects on
unsuccessful and successful adaptations to American culture of people. And I will finally formulate
my personal prediction for each group s future in the United States.
The first Japanese to migrate to the United States in significant numbers did so following changes
to the 1868 Meiji Restoration (Lee, L. P. 1989). They had to endure much hostility since their
beginning in the US; many attributed this mentality with competitive reasons for wanting to get
rid of the Japanese Americans who grew vegetables at low cost and own millions worth of
California land. Following the Pearl Harbor attacks on February 19, 1942, President Franklin D.
Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066. According to the Washington journal,

Technology is developing at such a rapid pace, that keyboards may soon be replaced for something

daily life. This is because it can be found on old architecture, and also because learning a difficult

The Use of Humor in the Writings of Mark Twain
What is humor? With humor we think of something that is obvious, something that sticks out to us
in a book or in a paper that makes us laugh. Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, included
numerous occasions of humor throughout his writings, though Mark Twain makes his humor very
dry and sometimes hard to tell that it is even there. Mark Twain, unlike most authors, includes
humor in his writings without it being blatantly obvious. In a small excerpt from an essay by
Naomi Hori on humor in one of Twain s writings, she writes, Let me clarify the features of Twain
s laughter. His way of evoking laughter is apparently by writing a book; there is no interaction
between Twain and his readers. There is a time lag till readers laugh... Show more content on

He believed that humor was the best way for people to deal with their anger and feelings towards
different problems or issues. One writing that Mark Twain is not as famous for, but is still a well
known piece of work for showing the use of humor in his writings is, The Celebrated Jumping
Frog of Calaveras County . This work starts off slow without much humor until later on in the
writing. The humor picks up as Twain includes bits of sarcasm to the mix. The humor in this
short work is not so hidden or subtle as it may have been in some of Twain s other writings. One
example of this sort of dry humor is, And Smiley says, sorter indifferent like, It might be a parrot,
or it might be a canary, may be, but it an t it s only just a frog. (Jumping Frog). This shows a side
and type of writing that is not usually seen with Twain. Usually the humor in his writings was
always sort of hidden away and harder to pick out, but in this work, it is more obvious that he is
trying to make it humorous. The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County may not be as
widely known as some of Twain s other work, but it is a good example of how he includes humor
into his writings to catch the reader s attention and to provide some comic relief from, at times,
tense situations.

Tooth Discoloration Essay
Tooth discoloration is extrinsic or intrinsic i.e. may be restricted to the outer layer (enamel) or may
involve the deeper layer (dentin) of the tooth. Various factors like genes, poor oral hygiene,
smoking, consumption of food substances like tea, coffee, wine, cranberries, etc. and even aging
are the common culprits behind the tooth discoloration. The stains on the teethcan also stain your
life negatively. You may suffer from low self esteem and self rejection due to the failure in
securing a job or because of a broken relationship. People judge by appearance and tooth
discoloration gives an indication of negligence towards oral hygiene. Nevertheless, tooth whitening

The concentration of bleaching agents like hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide is high in the
solutions used in the chairside tooth whitening procedures.
The dentist uses tools like lasers, heat therapy or special lights to remove the deep and intrinsic
discoloration as it helps the solution to oxidize the ingrained stains.
Thus, you can get whiter teeth within one or two appointments. Also, the effects last longer when
compared to those obtained by other methods.
Tooth sensitivity usually occurs, especially in young people, during or after the treatment.
However, the dentist isolates the soft tissues during the procedure with rubber dam or protective gel
and uses special techniques to minimize the chance of development of tooth sensitivity.
The professional tooth whitening does not require a much active participation of the patient as
compared to the use of over the counter products or the at home whitening kits. Thus, you can sit
back, relax on the dental chair and listen to your favorite piece of music while your dentist gives

Advantages Of Long-Distance Relationship
Being in a relationship such as a long distance one can be hard. There s the distance, of course,
but also the lack of communication and touch. These things shouldn t have to limit the amazing
love that comes out of an LDR. I have amazing experience of being with someone in this type of
relationship. My boyfriend and I have been dating for a little over a year. Getting to know
someone before you enter a relationship like this is so important. There is a foundation you build
and you get to know that person for who they are, how they live and generally how they treat you. I
knew my boyfriend for around nine months before we started liking one another and became a
couple. Before you start thinking anything along the lines of cat fishing, that is why we took the
time to get to know one another. We called one another, video chatted on Skype and played games
with each other, because that is how we met and how we kept things going. Eventually it turned to
us only talking to one another, making jokes and telling stories. Although lots of people believe that
long distance relationships cannot last, the relationship that I have with my boyfriend in New York
shows that long distance relationships can really last. In long distance relationships, interaction is
something that is very important. It brings a couple together and it is what holds them together
when they are apart; the constant excitement of getting to see them again. This is when technology
comes in. Long distance

Reed Erikson Summary
The article interested me because I didn t know that people identified as transgender as early as
the mid 1800s. The incidents at Cooper s Donuts and the Dewey Incident to me we sort of similar
because intersectionality placed a part in how some of the people were treated. I also learned that
most the activist during this era was nontransgendered men and transgendered women. Reed
Erikson was an important person in this movement because he was also transgender, and he funded
a lot of their causes. His funding was influential because this way he educated a lot of people that
were transgendered especially in a time period were being transgendered was taboo. Also in the

Conformity In The Great Gatsby
Drugs, alcohol, parties, popularity are the key known factors of peer pressure. In fact, most
teenagers today are exceptionally vulnerable to social conformity issues simply because social
acceptance at their age is important. However, they are not the only victims struggling in this
stage; there are also adults who are still swayed by the public opinions. This stage of social
conformity, according to the Kohlberg s stages of moral development, is often referred to as the
Interpersonal (tribal) conformity. This is applied to the large population of teenagers rather than the
adults. In the book The Great Gatsby, the peers around Daisy had a tremendous influence upon her
decisions. Even as an adult, Daisy consistently made an effort to satisfy... Show more content on

In fact, this also applies to the situation of understanding what social conformity is. This subject has
been around for centuries, forcing many to behave in a certain way that the society expects. The
influence of peer pressure is still a topic has an impact to the world, especially the adolescents. The
[s]ocial psychologists have suggested that one core function of compliance and conformity is to
maintain group harmony ( Social Influence and the Brain:Persuasion, Susceptibility to Influence
and Retransmission Cascio,Scholz,Falk) and this applies to many individuals who value public
opinions more than their own. They seek to be good people and make an effort to follow the
trend of the crowd. More often than not, this also relates to the confidence level of an
individual, If those others agree with one s beliefs, one gains confidence in them; if they
disagree, one loses confidence ( Conformity, Levine). This is indeed what many people face
today from all different phases of life. Daisy, one of the characters in the book The Great
Gatsby, is a perfect example of a person soaked into social conformity. From the beginning of her
marriage life with Tom to the end of the book, she progresses into immoral stages of life. Day
after day she conforms herself into a world filled with corruptions, such as adultery and murder.

Essay Religion and Racism
Religion and Racism
Racism is prejudice against people of another race or ethnic group. Prejudice means pre judging:
making up your mind about someone or something when you have not considered the facts or the
evidence.
Racism has been around for a very long time, one of the first times that it happened on a major
scale was when the Jews moved to Egypt, but were put into slavery because the Egyptians thought
of them as inferior because their skin colour and religious beliefs.
People are, or can be racist due to three main points, the first is that they were brought up by
parents who were racist, and they automatically adopted the views of them because that was all they
knew as right. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People automatically believed that just because the person had a different coloured skin that they
were inferior.
Racial discrimination is when people put their prejudice beliefs into action, they might give them
poorer housing, for instance in England more black people live on council estates even though
there are many more less of them in the whole country. The schooling that people of different races
receive is usually a lot worse than that of native people.
The law on racism states it is unlawful to discriminate against a person because of his/ her race,
colour nationality or ethnic origins.
ii) What Christian teachings might be used in a discussion about Racism?
In the discussion, a Christian would use the Bible to refer to, and also church teachings.
The Bible has a very strong view on racism, and the way you treat other people. The Bible says
very clearly that it is wrong for one person to treat another as inferior in anyway. Christians believe
that everybody should be treated as equal, regardless of their colour, beliefs or ethnic background.
Christian teachings talk strongly about equality and how you should treat someone who is an

Affluenz The All Consuming Epidemic By John De Graaf
Affluenza is defined as the need to consume and pursuit a high status in society. In the book
Affluenza: The All Consuming Epidemic by John de Graaf, David Wann, and Thomas H. Naylor,
the authors explain affluenza, and how it causes overwork, personal stress, the erosion of family
and community, high debt, and the growing dissatisfaction for current living. A large contributor to
affluenza is advertisement, a tactic that encourages over consumption by purchasing items
irrationally. The sports industry has been taken over by advertisement, allowing corporations to
take full advantage of the satisfaction that sports entertainment brings to the fans.
The Super Bowl, an annual championship game of the National Football League between the two
best teams, one from the AFC and NFC division. This needs to be explained because most would
see the Super Bowl as a time slot for entertaining commercials and an ad sponsored halftime
show. According to Affluenza thirty second slots during the Super Bowl have sold for much as
$1.6 million each (155). Of course this book is out dated, so the number has increased
throughout the years. The idea is still same; companies spend a fortune to buy all possible ad
space. The reason, the Super Bowl, frequently is the most watched American televised broadcast
of the year. Companies will continue to find ways to fit ads into the Super Bowl by taking bits and
pieces away from the game. Examples like the pre game, halftime and post game shows, the

Nobody Knows Sparknotes
Making jokes is the best way for people to create connections. However, a person s sense of
humor makes a huge difference in joking telling because jokes can offend people and has
various consequences. Making jokes about people is common between friends because a man
can understand that his friend only wants to get a couple laughs out of him and that his joke
shouldn t be taken to heart. In the short story Nobody Knows, a man, who clearly has not
mastered English, comes up to a random man asking him to explain a fight to a nearby cop. When
the man says, Tell the cop that guys like that, guys that don t know the scene the first impression of
him is that he s a regular at the bar and that the other man was new to the bar. This kid starts... Show

The kid throws a punch at the man and a ten second fight breaks out. The way everything played
out, the man started the fight because the kid could have interpreted the joke has the man
insulting his art skills. Another reason why the man is at fault is that he didn t even know the
person so why would he make a joke about his dick for? Plus, talking about dick does lead to
fights at times, depending on how people throw the word dick around. After the ten second
round ends, the man finds the stranger to help him explain the situation to the nearby cop. If I
was the cop, the first thing I would tell the man is, Sir, please learn how to speak and write English
properly because you sound like a kid trying to read a physics textbook. And second of all, why
would you hit a kid with a bottle if he tried to punch you? The man could have easily done serious
damage to the kid and risk going to jail over a dick joke. Not to mention that he s older than the kid
and he s the one telling the kid a dick joke. As the cop, all I would need to say is, You re a grown
man and what comes to your mind is telling a dick joke to some kid you ve never

The Moral Code Of Social And Individual Rights And...
Post conventional morality is consisting of social and individual rights and universal principles.
This stage of morality brings a hedonistic view of self and other as well as pure justice. Where
am I truly standing on? Utilitarian? Kantian? Or in between of both? Previous ethics papers have
put me into thinking who I really am and where I truly stand in moral code. I have dug my
deepest self and explored types of ideas and beliefs that I embraced. Thus, before I had actually
thought about what I truly care and role I want to play in this society, I believed that I was
utilitarian. Although, being utilitarian and my decisions did not exactly matched. The nurture part
of the life have shaped my moral code in more complicated form. Therefore, the conclusion that I
have come up with my moral code is heavily influenced by Immanuel Kant, Buddhism, and my
personal religion: Spiritualistic Agnostic. First, as growing up I was told to not to harm others
physical and psychological states. Kant also believes in the idea that not to use anyone for a means
to an end. As I make post conventional moral decision, I found myself leaning more onto Kantian
ethicsof not to use someone for a means to an end and the golden mean. Basically, decisions I
make in society reduce and/or no harm applied onto others while doing things in moderate pace or
amount. Kant believed that by having moral personality we are superior among other species.
Psychologically speaking, intelligence can be enhanced

The scandal surrounding President Richard Nixon, and a break in at the Democratic National
Headquarters. The story began of May of 1972, when a group of people on Nixon s reelection
committee broke into the headquarters and installed wire tapes, microphones, and stole copies
of secret documents. However, the microphones and wiretaps did not work, so on June 17, a
group of five men broke into the headquarters to install new ones. The men were caught and
arrested, but the mystery was why they did this. Eventually, it was clear that Nixon was closely
related to these burglars, and the judge of their trial, along with others, decided to do some more
investigation. It was revealed that Nixon had secret tapes of every conversation in the oval
office, and although he tried to resist, he was eventually ordered by the Supreme Court to give
them up. Richard Nixon resigned on August 5, 1974, after he was impeached by the House of
Representatives on July 27, 1974. The reason this relates to Spotlight, is because most of the
investigative work was done by two journalists from the Washington Post, Bob Woodward and
Carl Bernstein. Without them and their brilliant investigative work, the connections between the
robbers and the White House would not have been made. They even won a Pulitzer Prize for
their story on Watergate, because of its massive impact. Their effort and method of investigating
has become a model for all other investigative journalists to follow in order to show the world the
truth. The Spotlight team s work was very similar to that of Woodward and Bernstein s, and won a
Pulitzer Prize for their work as well, which is why Watergate relates to this

Aging And Reaction Time
Driving is a huge issue for older drivers and can be the cause of most conflicts. As we age, we
tend to lose many of our abilities and reaction time is one of them. This brings me to my first main
point, reaction time. Dictionary.com states that reaction time is the amount of time it takes to
respond to a stimulus, how you fast you can react. Reaction time is important because it s being
able respond quickly and appropriately to situations, but as we older, that tends to decrease.
According to psychcentral.com, as we age, the brainfibers that connect to both hemispheres of the
brain begin to break down making our response time slower. Now let s look at this in a driving
sense. A slower time can cause problems if other drivers stop suddenly,

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc.
In March of 2009, the SEC filed a cease and desist order to Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc., for their
actions in prior years. The corporation had purposely inflated their earnings throughout 2003 and
2004 in an attempt to meet Wall Street expectations and retain their investors. With the over
inflation of their actual earnings, Krispy Kremewas able to present a higher earnings per share (EPS)
to the public and therefore become more favorable among investors. In this case there are three
primary transactions known as round trip transactions that occur. This meaning that the company
was paying set amounts to franchisee s and then expecting them to return the payments in a
prearranged manner. In doing so, this would allow Krispy Kreme to record extra pretax incomeand
therefore inflate their profits. There were also reports of channel stuffing that surfaced from
former employees once the SEC began investigating Krispy Kreme. According to the reports
Krispy Kreme would send double orders at the end of the year in order to boost their sales and
meet expectations. Those orders would then be returned and credited at the beginning of the next
fiscal year. Price Waterhouse Coopers were the auditors at the time and would then face serious
questioning as to why they never noticed the increased shipments at the end of each year followed
by the credits when the orders were returned the next year. Looking at the three incidents that
occurred each had their own unique distinctions while

  • 2. The Football Is A Sport In New York, if you stand in the street and scream football, people in the streets will all understand what you mean, American football. That s two team of eleven big players wearing protective pads and running holding an egg shaped ball, while if you do the same in Paris or London the locals will assume you are referring to soccer. Two teams of eleven players kicking and passing a perfectly round black and white ball. Though, the name footballis used in both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, it s totally two deferent sports, both in term of playing and rules. America football is a sport played by two team of eleven players on a rectangular field divided into 10 yards to a total of 100yards, the width is a bit wider than fifty three yards and with goalposts shape like letter H on each end of the field. The team with control of the ball, called the offense team, attempts to advance the ball downfield, by running or passing the ball or by throwing down the field. While the opposing team aims to stop their advance and take control of the ball themselves. The object of the game is to simply outscore your opponent. This is accomplished by advancing the football up field and scoring as many touchdowns, or field goals, (kicking the egg shaped ball through the upper goal post), as possible. While the other team will be holding back the advance they make, hence, becoming the defense side and preventing the other team to as few touchdowns as possible. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay about Children’s Literature in Jamaica Children s Literature in Jamaica As children in the United States, we grow up listening to the stories of Dr. Seuss and Curious George as we fall off to sleep to the sound of our parent s voices echoing in our dreams. As we start to grow older and the poetry of Shel Silverstein s, Where the Sidewalk Ends no longer holds our imagination as much as it did at eight years old, we begin to read stories that are a reflection of the environment we live within. We engaged ourselves in the lives of such characters as the Hardy Boys and Willy Wonka. What these stories lacked however, are the social issues that are ever present in today s society. Not all of American children s literature is without social content, but the literature many of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Children s folklore and literature thrives in the stories of Anancy. Anancy is an indestructible and irresistible spider who is both, fooler and fool, maker and unmade, wily and stupid, subtle and gross, the High God s accomplice and his rival. (Dance, 11) Anancy is generally a figure of admiration whose cunning and scheming nature reflects the indirection and subtleties necessary for survival and occasionally victory for the Black man in a racist society. In Jamaica, Anancy, the descendant of a West African deity takes on special significance in a society, which has its roots in a system of slavery. It is as though every slave strove to be Anancy and he who achieved the Spider form became a kind of hero. Anancy s greatest attributes however, are his character flaws. Anancy is far from a perfect folk hero, and many of his characteristics are egotistical, selfish, and ignorant. Regardless of the wealth of character flaws he possesses, Anancy has an irresistibility that has been preserved in its most uncorrupted form. As Rex Nettleford states in his introduction to Walter Jekyll s, Jamaican Song and Story, in order to cope with an unstraight and crooked world one needs unstraight and crooked paths. (Jekyll, xiii) As a child, playwright and author, Louise Bennett recalls that everything that happened in the world was caused by Anancy. (Jekyll, ix) As a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Not only has it influenced sports in North America but also sports across the world. In 1988, Stan Honey, Jerry Gepner, and Bill Squadron three former executives at News Corp. and Fox Sports founded Sportvision (http:/ /www.sportvision.com). They used their extensive technology, sports production, and broadcast experience to create an innovative company that focuses on developing technology based enhancements for the Internet, sports television, and new media platforms (Shapiro). The 1st Ten Line is a yellow line that is superimposed on the field so that viewers at home can see just how far the offensive team has to go to reach a first down. This is helpful in that it allows first time viewers to get a better grasp on the game and the overall offensive objective, which is to gain first downs until the team either kicks a field goal or scores a touchdown. The following is a picture of the 1st Ten Line: Figure 1: The yellow line With the same technology used for the 1st Ten Line the telestrator enables broadcasters to draw lines and arrows on the screen so that audiences at home can understand exactly what the announcer is trying to convey. This applies to the novel Code Talker by Joseph Bruchac. This is because of how the main character Kii Yazhi demonstrates leadership in the novel. Kii is a Navajo learning the American way at school soon to find out that he wants to become a Marine. Kii goes from going to boarding school to learning codes to communicate while being a marine. Kii becomes a marine to fight for his country, beliefs, and family. Kii Yazhi demonstrates leadership characteristics throughout the whole novel. Even before this message Kii Yazhi wanted to become a marine to fight for his country, beliefs, and family. His family promised him that if the war would still be going on he would have their blessing, so when Ned Begay turned 16 his parents gave their blessing and went with him to get signed up. This has had a positive effect, because Ned Begay got to follow his dreams, protect his country, defend his family, and make his beliefs stand out. The second leadership characteristic he has shown is inspiration. Ned Begay inspired people because of how he puts others before himself. While in the foxhole he dug up the Japanese were executing their well thought out plan next to him was another marine about twice the size of Ned who had a wounded arm. Even though Ned Begay s fingernails were broken and bleeding he still helped a fellow marine in need. • 6. Persuasive Essay On Being A Outsider Being an outsider is a position that an individual does not fit in with the rest of society. Areas of society are often called clique at which we feel like we must coordinate our actions to follow and pleases. Those actions leads to the anonymous question should the outside, those who do not follow the rest be embraced or rejected. Corresponding with the rights of our world, we are seen as equal, yet we do not always follow that. Outsiders should be rejected, providing them growth, individuality through independence and, crucial life skills. Like a seed planted in the soil growing into a nice tree. Similar to the seed outsiders are born and left to grow. They are living , breathing, eating and drinking yet they are not as high on the competition list as others are who follow the same steps. With that said the seed or outsiders are left to grow while being independent they from senses of personal goals which allow them to transform their minds around whatever that goalmay be, possible career, academics or even financial goals at which only make them better and stronger people. Each of these people begin with disadvantages that could have, and at times did exclude them from normal society. But each turned their differences into advantages (Clark). • 7. Multilayered Structured Sun 2. The sun being a multilayered structure has 3 main layers. There is the Chromosphere, the Photosphere and the Corona. The photosphere is mainly the thinnest layer of gas where Earth receives the sunlight from and convection occurs right under the photosphere. The motion of hot materials rising while the cooler materials sink and this causes granulation. Granulation also known as the mottled appearance is the dark regions and that is how the energy inside the sunis transferred out. 7. When looking at the sun you would imagine that the surface would be boiling. But since the surface of the sun is actually pretty cool it causes very few hydrogen atoms to have electrons in the excited states. With the hydrogen atom providing a limited amount of excited electrons it would cause us not to see it on the spectral line. But unlike the hydrogen being abundant, calcium isn t. Calcium has enough electrons to transfer from the ground state and make an appearance on the spectral lines because it isn t abundant. 9. We don t have evidence that sunspots are magnetic but we do know that the sunspots are caused by the magnetic activity amongst the sun. Also with the understanding of the Zeeman effect we can conclude how strong the magnetic fields are that cause the sunspots. In conclusion we see that sunspots are in fact apart of the magnetic field in the layers of the suns atmosphere. 10. To fully understand the sun cycle many scientists use the Babcock model. Was he excited or nervous? Also if, he filmed other movies like this one. If he did, was it different or similar to Twilight? How is this movie unique compared to other movies he has directed? Did the director enjoy working with the actors? Did he find it weird how a vampire and a human can fall in love? Also how a wolf be in love with a human let alone the same human the vampire happened to be in love with? Was the love triangle confusing him? My question for the actors will be how did it make them feel acting like vampires and wolves and how was it uncommon compared to other movies they acted in. Also, how did it make the vampire feel that the wolf fell in love with the same person he was. How did it make Bella feel that two men were in love with her and one was a vampire and the other was a wolf? How did it make her feel that the vampire whom she happened to be in love with can kill her on accident at any moment? Did she like that she was in love with him or did she wish she wasn t in love? • 9. Analysis Of The Fall Of A City By Alden Nowlan Alden Nowlan in the story The Fall of a City demonstrates through imagery, foreshadowing, and dramatic irony that one should not openly judge another, as it can greatly impact the said person. Firstly, imagery is used when Teddy s uncle makes a comment about Teddy, and Teddy compares his uncle s face to an antagonist from his imaginary kingdom. For example, He s got his head in the clouds again. His uncle laughed mirthlessly. Out of the corner of his eye Teddy looked at his uncle s round, florid face and reflected on the resemblance to Zikla, Duke of Anders (Nowlan 32). Clearly, this quote illustrates Teddy s reaction after hearing his uncle s comments towards him as he did not acknowledge this in a positive way. Teddy s uncle rudely laughs at him afterword which proves... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, He could not hear the strumming of rain on the roof. Foreshadowing here is used to indicate the coming impact, directed towards Teddy, as he is the king of the imaginary kingdom. Finally, the author uses dramatic irony when Teddy s uncle discovers his creation in the attic. That great big lummox has been playing with paper dolls...And 11 year old boy! The man choked trying to restrain his laughter (33). Hence, this quote proclaims how Teddy s uncle judges him in a variety of ways. Shirley Valentine, a story about a middle aged house wife whose life couldn t be more mundane; she has no one but the wall to talk to. Shirley Valentine, written by Willy Russell, is one of his most famous screenplays. This essay will look at how Russell invites the audience to sympathise with Shirley through his use of language, ideas and themes, the effects of dramatic devices and characters in the play. Russell uses characters and their actions to invite us to feel sympathy for Shirley. The way she is treated by her family and especially Joe makes the readers feel compassion for her. Joe s views on women is based on some the social beliefs of the 1980s that a women s role is as a mother and a wife. This is similar to the context because Joe is being sexist as he expects Shirley to do the housework. Even though women did go out and work they were still expected to look after their husbands. If the audience were to be in Shirley s shoes, they would probably be very fed up of life and pretty miserable and depressed at how they are being treated by Joe. During the 1980s it would have been easy for women to relate to stories like Shirley s because some of them may have faced these problems. By relating to common problems probably faced by a lot of women Russell makes it easier for them to sympathise because Shirley s life is what they might be living too. A lot of the screenplay has been influenced by Russell s own life. He listened to a lot of women s stories when he worked as a women s hairdresser. This helped him understand their problems and their feelings which he successfully portrayed in Shirley Valentine. However, not all the characters in the screenplay invite the audience to sympathise with Shirley. This is because they are nice to Shirley and treat her nicely. Costas is the complete opposite to Joe. While Joe takes Shirley for granted, Costas helps Shirley enjoy her time in Greece and makes her feel appreciated. He ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Stoker was mesmerized by Irving s charismatic performance, but was disappointed to find only a cursory mention of the event in the next day s Dublin Evening Mail. A second tour by Irving four years later produced an equally unsatisfactory mention in the Mail, prompting an outraged young Stoker to march into the offices of the newspaper and offer himself for the unpaid position of theater critic. He got the job, and as a result, when Irving (now a star of the London stage) returned to Dublin a third time, this time to star in Hamlet, Stoker had the opportunity to set down in print glowing praises of his favorite actor. Irving read the review and was delighted to the extent that he invited the young critic to supper at his hotel, and began a friendship that would last for almost thirty years. In the years between 1870 and 1877, Stoker, yielding to his father s wishes, followed him into a career as civil servant in Dublin Castle. However, Stoker maintained ties to Trinity College, returning there frequently to speak on a wide range of topics for the Philosophical Society. It provides the reader with important historical background about the slavery system and Guinea. In the first three chapter, Equiano tells us a lot about his native country, early years, and his kidnapping. The people of Eboe, where Equiano is born, are very civilized. They have their own laws and traditions. For example, the chiefs or elders of the place usually conduct the governmental proceedings. Their laws are built on democratic basis. They hold meeting to decide upon any dispute and punish crimes. They natives are very cooperative and organized. They all labor and fight together from their early years. In addition, whenever a new bridegroom want to build his house, everyone helps him and expect nothing in return. One of the natives best traits is being pragmatic. They could make drinks, clothes, and perfumes out of simple materials. They are not only good at manufacturing, but also trading and they even have their own currency. Unfortunately, the natives are not perfect as Equiano tries to portray them. Even though women and men almost wear the same clothes, which symbolizes equality, women are not considered equal to men. When a couple marry, everything that the girls own becomes the bridegroom s property. Similarly, if a woman cheats on her husband, she is punished severely. This absurd logic, hilarious at first, is the root of Catch 22, and is but one such absurd joke among many in the book. In Catch 22, Joseph Heller employs comedy to illustrate how initially comical characteristics can, when pulled to the extremes, lead people to enact cruelties. Many of the most memorable moments of Catch 22 are indisputably hilarious. One such example is Colonel Cathcart, an indecisive squadron leader obsessed with his own self image. The darker implications of Cathcart s actions reflect twistedly on the humor of those first scenes. These cherished, humorous moments of the book cannot be laughed at anymore without a sense of unease. This evolution of scenes is especially clear with the novel s name. The Catch 22 in the beginning is but a series of elaborate and absurd paradoxes. Our ability to twist logic for our own means entertains us in the novelty of what can result from it. As the book draws to a close, however, Catch 22 starts being used with a distinctively different connotation, shown when Yossarian escapes to Rome. There, upon entering the ... Given that both poverty and unemployment have already been discussed, the focus now turns to crime and security. In addition to the apparent changes made in the commercial realm that have multiplied businesses and created jobs for the previously unemployed, residents of these neighbourhoods have noticed changes made in terms of crime and safety. As previously touched upon, up until the 1990 s, Medellin s history of violence led to the lack of surveillance and safety in the cityas well as in the rural areas. Over time, the Metrocables have had a positive impact on the crime and safety sector of Medellin. Those who reside in the neighbourhoods around the Metrocables have noticed a decrease in incidence related to gang warfare, crime, and violence since the implementation of these aerial cable cars (Agudelo, 2013). Since the Metrocables are a relatively new form of urban mobility in these areas, security measures have been taken via surveillance to ensure that this mode of transportation is benefitting people and living up to its original intentions. • 27. Aesthetic Disinterestedness Analysis Jameson Hoffman HON 3310 Dr. Hayan Charara November 17, 2017 Disinterestedness and Distance in Modernist Aesthetics In his essay On the Origins of Aesthetic Disinterestedness Jerome Stolnitz describes how aesthetic criticism began with Lord Shaftesbury s idea of the virtuous man as a spectator, devoted to the very survey and contemplation of beauty in manners and morals, the initial practical significance of disinterested is supplanted altogether by the perceptual , a definition that would eventually grow from an ethical one to an aesthetic one (133). While much of the tradition of aesthetic theory is built on this idea of the necessity of being disinterested in the object in question, however, the implied inability to judge the aesthetic of objects a viewer is interested in is extremely limiting. Immanuel Kant, an inheritor of this idea, goes further and completely rules out any judgement from an interested viewer: everyone must admit that a judgment about beauty, in which the least interest mingles, is very partial and is not a pure judgment of taste (2). Both men, being of the 18th century, could never have anticipated a Modernist aesthetic which relies heavily on the beauty of utility and inherently requires an interested spectator. The aesthetic principles of Modernism are in many ways even entirely incompatible with the kind of aesthetic disinterestedness Kant espoused. We must first decipher exactly what Kant meant by an interested viewer. Kant distinguishes between adherent and free beauty; with free beauty there is presupposed no concept of any purpose which the manifold of the given object is to serve while human beauty (i.e. of a man, a woman, or a child), the beauty of a horse, or a building (be it church, palace, arsenal, or summer house), presupposes a general concept of the purpose which determines what the thing is to be... It is therefore adherent beauty (15). To Kant the judgement of free beauty is pure because the viewer doesn t project their own ideas and wishes onto it or become swayed by the physical pleasure that accompanies it (15). It becomes quite obvious that Duddy did not value his friendships as much as he did his wealth, as if he did, he would ve earned money the proper way, as a waiter, and wouldn t have resorted to such ruthless acts in order to attain complacency. It s quite disappointing to learn how he would sacrifice the only loving relationship he ever had (with Yvette) just so he can obtain land. All of the accused were found guilty of conspiring with the fascists and Leon Trotsky (at this point in exile) to bring down the socialist state, and bring a return of capitalism. As many Western historians have noted, these trials were far from fair. They are generally referred to as show trials as they were highly politicized and resulted in the deaths of all of the accused without any fair judicial proceedings (Fitzpatrick, ... • 34. American Culture Of People From Japan And Arab Countries Final Essay In the United States many different nationalities and culture have come to reside by immigrating to this country. Although in the past being an immigrant in this country was often faced with hardship and discrimination the dream of a better and more promising future in America has always enticed people from places far and wide. Such has been the case with people from Japan and Arab countries. The differences in policies and treatment in the US varied, but their reasoning behind why their migrated is almost always for a more prosperous life. This paper aims to make a comparison at the two groups by providing information on why they migrated and examples of interaction between the two. It will further examine past and present policies and its effects on unsuccessful and successful adaptations to American culture of people. And I will finally formulate my personal prediction for each group s future in the United States. The first Japanese to migrate to the United States in significant numbers did so following changes to the 1868 Meiji Restoration (Lee, L. P. 1989). They had to endure much hostility since their beginning in the US; many attributed this mentality with competitive reasons for wanting to get rid of the Japanese Americans who grew vegetables at low cost and own millions worth of California land. Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, included numerous occasions of humor throughout his writings, though Mark Twain makes his humor very dry and sometimes hard to tell that it is even there. Mark Twain, unlike most authors, includes humor in his writings without it being blatantly obvious. In a small excerpt from an essay by Naomi Hori on humor in one of Twain s writings, she writes, Let me clarify the features of Twain s laughter. This work starts off slow without much humor until later on in the writing. The humor picks up as Twain includes bits of sarcasm to the mix. Previous ethics papers have put me into thinking who I really am and where I truly stand in moral code. I have dug my deepest self and explored types of ideas and beliefs that I embraced. Thus, before I had actually thought about what I truly care and role I want to play in this society, I believed that I was utilitarian. Therefore, the conclusion that I have come up with my moral code is heavily influenced by Immanuel Kant, Buddhism, and my personal religion: Spiritualistic Agnostic. First, as growing up I was told to not to harm others physical and psychological states. Kant also believes in the idea that not to use anyone for a means to an end. The story began of May of 1972, when a group of people on Nixon s reelection committee broke into the headquarters and installed wire tapes, microphones, and stole copies of secret documents. However, the microphones and wiretaps did not work, so on June 17, a group of five men broke into the headquarters to install new ones. The men were caught and arrested, but the mystery was why they did this. Eventually, it was clear that Nixon was closely related to these burglars, and the judge of their trial, along with others, decided to do some more investigation. It was revealed that Nixon had secret tapes of every conversation in the oval office, and although he tried to resist, he was eventually ordered by the Supreme Court to give them up. Richard Nixon resigned on August 5, 1974, after he was impeached by the House of Representatives on July 27, 1974. The reason this relates to Spotlight, is because most of the investigative work was done by two journalists from the Washington Post, Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein. They even won a Pulitzer Prize for their story on Watergate, because of its massive impact. Their effort and method of investigating has become a model for all other investigative journalists to follow in order to show the world the truth. The Spotlight team s work was very similar to that of Woodward and Bernstein s, and won a Pulitzer Prize for their work as well, which is why Watergate relates to this ... The corporation had purposely inflated their earnings throughout 2003 and 2004 in an attempt to meet Wall Street expectations and retain their investors. With the over inflation of their actual earnings, Krispy Kremewas able to present a higher earnings per share (EPS) to the public and therefore become more favorable among investors. In this case there are three primary transactions known as round trip transactions that occur. This meaning that the company was paying set amounts to franchisee s and then expecting them to return the payments in a prearranged manner. In doing so, this would allow Krispy Kreme to record extra pretax incomeand therefore inflate their profits. There were also reports of channel stuffing that surfaced from former employees once the SEC began investigating Krispy Kreme. According to the reports Krispy Kreme would send double orders at the end of the year in order to boost their sales and meet expectations. Those orders would then be returned and credited at the beginning of the next fiscal year. Price Waterhouse Coopers were the auditors at the time and would then face serious questioning as to why they never noticed the increased shipments at the end of each year followed by the credits when the orders were returned the next year.
