This session will share findings and recommendations from a research study at Sheffield Hallam University aimed at creating a better understanding of the connections students make between their assessment feedback and future assignments, and what impact staff practice has on this process. The presentation will cover each stage of the assessment process for both students and staff, and make specific reference to how identified issues have been addressed through technology elsewhere in the UK Higher Education sector.
The main element of the presentation will be a detailed explanation of the recommendations resulting from the research, and the policy, practice and technology changes required to implement them.

Traditionally coursework is submitted, marked and returned to students with their grade and feedback. The difficulties with this approach is that a tutor has no way of assessing whether a student has reviewed their work, understood their feedback and took action to improve their work. There is no clear method for determining whether student’s perceived judgment of their submitted assessment is similar to that of the tutor; or for advising support to improve learning.
This session will share the journey and evaluation findings of the CLARITI project which is endeavouring to address such difficulties. Presenters will begin by highlighting the opportunities and challenges of an initial paper-based feedback and progress review approach, which was used. It had obvious pedagogical benefits but was challenging administratively. They
will then showcase a new technology facilitated approach which is enabling students to submit assessments as normal but providing new opportunities were they are given corrective feedback and model solutions and encouraged to be more reflective using the Ulster University’s Blackboard VLE, FAN system and a new bespoke application.
The project has been evaluating the benefits of initially withholding student’s marks while students are asked to reflect and indicate what score they think they deserve and what actions they think they need to take to improve their learning. The student scores, reflections and action plans are collected electronically via a ‘Learner Score’ quiz in Blackboard. A newly designed bespoke application has been developed which presents the data collected from Blackboard in a simple interface, which allows the tutor to easily: review the learner score and comments provided by the students; engage with this student feedback and return a tutor score. It has also been designed to automatically generate an advisability for further support response, depending on the tutor’s scores and a mechanism for giving individualised feedback. Each student receives an email with a link to an individual progress and summary report. One student has commented “This feedback strategy highlights the silly mistakes I have made and motivates me to get it right next time. I don’t think just getting a score on a piece of paper would have the same effect.” The presenters will lead activities to encourage debate among participants about the approach, the application of such an approach for other subjects and will seek ideas about how the benefits of such learner analytics could be captured and integrated more seamlessly into Blackboard.

Update on our first-hand experience of implementing Blackboard’s own Learning Analytics Solution. With the hindsight of having used our own Analytics for many years.
Our aim was to improve the range of analytics available, specifically for UDOL who remotely manage staff and students and therefore have a broader reporting requirement than our on-campus support teams. Increasing reporting capacity to ensure that our eye is always on the ball. With Blackboard Learning Analytics there is also the added advantage of making the data available to the student so they can self-manager there progress in relation to their peers.
Having implemented in early 2015 using just the out of the box reports, we are now looking to see how we can extend the capability of the reporting, and are looking forward to the journey ahead. The session will avoid using those pesky technical terms you often get with analytics. (Well there might be a couple)

The electronic management of assessment (EMA) has forced universities to consider a more strategic approach to e-assessment. Piecemeal adoption of the various components from plagiarism detection to feedback methods have led to varying degrees of use and uptake by lecturers. The increased focus on rubrics for feedback and marking has raised issues with colleagues on the comparative advantages between Blackboard and Turnitin and even Excel. In isolation, can a case be made for one over another? Regardless of which rubric is adopted, they cannot be exported from one system to another.

Using Blackboard to support team-based learning: delivery and rolloutBlackboardEMEA
Team-based learning (TBL) is a teaching and learning technique that is being used increasingly in professional and higher education. The approach is structured, involving pre-study by students, quizzing to assess understanding, and peer-to-peer learning via team and class discussion. It is also scalable; a single member of teaching staff can run a highly interactive learning session for a large class and usually forms part of the summative assessment for the
course.
This session will provide a brief introduction to the TBL process and describe how delivery of TBL can be supported by the use of learning technology, in particular Blackboard Learn tools. In fact, the presentation could be subtitled ‘How many Blackboard tools can be used in a single learning activity?’
Finally, I will describe how a generic course package can be prepared, including all elements of the learning design of a TBL session, for easy redeployment in other Blackboard courses. The course package not only captures the technical elements of the session, but also elements of pedagogy and best practice.

Introducing the PASS program: Pre-arrival success strategies for studentsLearningandTeaching
PASS (Pre-Arrival Success Strategies) is a free online course for students who will be studying with the International College of Manitoba (ICM) in subsequent terms. The course is designed for students who wish to get a head start on their studies. The course is led by ICM alumni who mentor prospective students in navigating the complexities of their new education system.
Units are delivered over five weeks and cover a variety of topics, including overviewing the learning management system (Moodle), connecting students with their future classmates, understanding essential elements of course outlines, planning for weekly and term schedules, introducing concepts of academic integrity, and more. Students have flexibility in choosing which units they wish to complete as they accumulate points for each assessment completed - students who complete various achievements earn various rewards.

Elements of exemplary course design are well documented and readily accessible from various resources. Most notable are the Blackboard Exemplary Course Program (http://bit.ly/2jCURRd) and the Quality Matters Rubrics and Standards (http://bit.ly/2jdtwTG). While these are excellent resources that outlines the goals and standards to improve the learning experience of students in an online or blended course environment, workload associated with its deployment and management is difficult to evaluate.
With increasing strain on teaching and learning support teams within institutions, this exacerbates the challenge faced by instructors and academics of HOW to approach improving their courses in a scalable and manageable way.
This workshop will focus on facilitating participants in the development of a course evolution and management framework. The goal is to guide participants in establishing a unique set of foundations for course design, upon which iterative improvements can be planned and executed in a manageable manner. These can then be mapped against relevant Exemplary Course Design Rubric elements to create short-, mid-, and long-term milestones.
Feedback to students on their work and attainment is at the centre of successful learning in higher education. However many top rated universities find it hard to match high levels of student satisfaction with teaching and learning in general with levels of satisfaction in assessment and feedback. There are many factors which impact the quality of the feedback, and at UEA we are keen that the opportunities to enrich through digitisation are not constrained to the replication of previously paper based practices. For this reason we have initiated a project to harness all of Blackboardäó»s interactive tools to raise the quality of feedback. The overall aim of the project is to embed assessment and feedback in teaching and learning, so that feedback becomes a dialogic process and not a product in itself. This presentation is a report on our progress so far and looks at a range of interventions and their results, as we scale up to campus wide integration of Blackboard assessment and feedback tools. The evidence of impact comes from the academic community and students. We welcome interaction from fellow delegates during the presentation, as we discuss how Blackboard supports us to move forward with feedback.

Description: At the School of Communication Media and IT eduction is structured in integrated domains.
Web programming is one of these domains. Students have to attend a number of different courses. Courses are subdivided into lectures and practicals, demand that online instructional videos are to be viewed and have formative tests at regular intervals. The ramifications are that heavy burden is placed on the LMS since it has to both incorporate all the different courses, projects, assignments, and has to allow for attendance registration. The number of users and of roles is high. We will present a show case of how to structure a course in BB thus reducing this complexity especially for instructors.

4. Methodology
• Worked with 10 tutors and 20 students:
• Tutor participants - interviewed using a semi-structured approach designed to explore
the assessment and feedback approach and feedback given to a Level 5 cohort of
students
• Student participants - recruited from the modules of participating tutors and
interviewed using a semi-structured approach to explore the assignment journey and
feedback provided by the tutor participant
• Data analysed during a two-day workshop attended by four
members of QESS

• Varied preferences for ‘where’ they work
• Need to be able to access the resources that will enable them to complete
assignments to the best of their ability
• Few referred back to feedback after an initial read through
• More likely to refer to feedback where they could see clear links between two
assignments, but struggled to identify connections beyond surface level aspects

• When work is submitted hard copy and in person, some felt assured that their
work had been received. Others felt more secure submitting work online, but
want to receive receipts for their submissions
• Ease and convenience of online submission widely appreciated though an
element of mistrust from some due to concerns about technical issues affecting
submission
• Especially as online deadlines were usually set later than hard copy hand-ins (e.g. Midnight vs.
4 p.m.)
• Students valued early feedback on drafts

varied
• Particularly value feedback that is directly linked to assessment criteria
• Appreciate the convenience and ease of access of feedback issued online, as
well as the opportunity to read their feedback in privacy

achieved electronically (e.g. preference for annotated scripts)
• Some received their grades online and their feedback hard copy. Students were
less likely to engage with their feedback if there was a separation of grades and
feedback, especially when grades were published first

techniques to try and mark efficiently (including comment banks)
• Some felt strongly against marking onscreen and were frustrated by the
inefficiency of existing technology available to support online marking
• Some have developed their own mechanisms to mark assignments more
efficiently outside of Blackboard

14. • Method of marking assignments determined the method of returning feedback
• Expect hard copy feedback to be collected from the assessment hand-in point
• Concerns that when students were expected to collect feedback they do not
always do so, particularly when grades have already been released online
• The administrative burden of issuing feedback online was no more
cumbersome than the amount of work involved in returning hard copy feedback
• Aware that students experienced frustration when feedback was not delivered
at the expected time

15. • Despite staff offering formal and informal opportunities to discuss feedback,
and students being aware of these opportunities, they often did not take up the
opportunity for dialogue
• Staff hoped that students would apply feedback in future assignments,

the next, they did not specifically look for application of feedback

Our challenge is to achieve consistency from the student perspective whilst embracing the
variety if practice from the staff perspective

• Staff should have an awareness of all assessments that students are likely to
take as this will enable them to consider how their feedback might feed into
other modules and make this explicit to students (e.g. City University London’s
Law Programme Overview Browser)
• An online ‘assessment map’ at course level would be a useful tool (e.g. University of
Greenwich’s Map My Programme)

• Ensure resources are ‘accessible’ to students
• Assessment briefs and criteria should be available online alongside other assessment
information such as grades and feedback
• A ‘central location’ should be created for all assessments and feedback that will
enable students to identify links between assessments

• All assignment deadlines should be set within normal working hours
• Make online submission the norm, as it:
• makes better use of student time and reduces money spent on resources such as
paper and printing
• streamlines the process from an administrative perspective
• Recognise that online submission does not necessarily mean online marking,
but gives the opportunity to choose how staff want to mark (e.g. University of
Derby’s ‘Print to Mark’ service)

4. Marking and feedback generation
• Development of an end-to-end online marking experience for staff could
facilitate ease and efficiency of marking online, with the end-point being the
issuing of feedback in a single place (see University of Hudderfield’s evaluation
project, EBEAM). This tool could accommodate offline marking and staff who
have developed their own solutions to marking electronically

5. Issuing and receiving feedback
• Advertise ‘feedback dates’ as this makes clear to students when they can expect
to receive feedback and so reduces their anxieties
• Grades and feedback should be issued together (same time and medium)
• Students value feedback that is aligned to assessment criteria (e.g. Blackboard
Rubrics). Students also value ‘in context’ feedback, but this must reinforce
criteria-based feedback

6. Storing feedback
• Students like to store their feedback in one place and are more likely to refer to
feedback if it is stored alongside the rest of their learning materials
• The development of an online assessment and feedback store would enable students to
collate all feedback from all modules in a single place and promote informed dialogue
between tutors and students (e.g. University of Dundee’s InterACT project)
• Use personal development portfolios to encourage students to reflect on their
feedback and formalise the (often) subconscious processes used to ‘recall’
feedback

• Students struggle to identify connections between assessments on each of their
modules. A clear ‘map’ of all assessments will enable students to identify
potential connections (e.g. University of Greenwich’s Map My Programme)
• Encourage students to make use of opportunities to discuss their feedback. This
will encourage students to use feedback in future assignments
