2. Introduction
The hydraulic crane is used for transferring
or lifting heavy loads.
It can lift loads up to 2500 kN.
It is widely used in loading and unloading in
ship, warehouses, workshop, heavy industries
and dock sidings.

5. Tie & Jib
The jib and tie are
attached to the
vertical post .
 Jib is hinged near
the foot of the
vertical post .
Jib can be raised
or lower in order
to change the
radius of action.

6. Jigger
• Hydraulic jigger consist of a movable
ram sliding in a fixed cylinder . The
sliding ram , one end is connected to set
of movable pulley block and other end is
contact with water.

8. Ropes
• One end of wire rope
fixed with cylinder body
is taken round all the
pulley of the two sets of
pulley and at the end
passes round the guide
pulley block.
• The free end of the wire
rope is attached with a
hook for suspending the
load.

9. Working
During the lifting
the load by
crane, the high
pressure water is
admitted into the
fixed cylinder of
jigger.

10. Working
The pressurised
water forces the
sliding ram to
move right with
movable pulley
bock.

11. Working
So that the
distance between
two pulley blocks
increases

12. Working
Which causes the
wire passing over
the guide pulley is
pulled by the jigger
and hence the load
attached to hook is
lifted.

1. For lower the load,
close inlet valve
and open outlet
valve
2. So that water is
forced out the
cylinder
3. hence ram moves
towards the left
4. So the distance
between two pulley
blocks decreases
5. Which release the
wire rope and the
load is lowering
down

14. Application
• Hydraulic crane used for loading and
unloading of ship and Railway wagons and
heavy industries.

15. Advantages and Disadvantages
• Advantages
Cheaper.
Easy to operate
 Construction is simple.
• Disadvantages
Carrying capacity is less than the electric crane.
Lifting speed is low, Modern hydraulic crane has
an lifting speed of about 75 m per minute.
