Tropical cyclones, known by different names in different regions, are extremely destructive when they hit cities and towns. They form over warm ocean waters and rotate clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere, with winds that can exceed 250 km/h. Cyclone Tracy was particularly devastating, hitting Darwin, Australia on Christmas Day 1974 and damaging nearly 90% of houses in the city. India is highly vulnerable to cyclones, which occur most often along its eastern coastline between May and November. Cyclones can cause extensive damage through high winds, storm surges, and flooding.
