Introducing the HRL
Cheat Sheet!
Rafi Santo, Indiana University
Dixie Ching, New York University
• Research-based recommendations
• Addressing common issues or contexts
relevant to Hive member organizations.
• Focused on HRL research areas:
• How to support youth interest-driven
learning pathways?
• How to strengthen Hive as an infrastructure
for innovation?
What is an HRL Cheat Sheet?
Pop-Ups!
What are those research areas again?
Youth Level:
How can the Hive best support youth interest-
driven learning pathways?
Network level:
How can the Hive be strengthened as an
infrastructure for innovation?
• Pop-Ups, Hack Jams and Maker Parties
• Two Hive member user types:
• Participants (running stations or just
attending)
• Facilitators (hosting the event or organizing
overall)
• Two general goals: YT and DOI
• 4 unique categories x 4 recs each = 16 bite-
sized recommendations overall!
Overview
To better support Youth Interest-Driven
Pathways…
If you’re a participating organization…
• Have your youth play a central role in the
running of your station (Ex: design the
station, beta test something, or just help
facilitate more generally)
• E.g. – Rubin Museum & MOUSE
Rubin Museum - Summer Quest Maker
Party
To take advantage of Hive as an
Infrastructure for Innovation…
If you’re a participating organization…
• Use Pop-Ups as a context for
experimentation, prototyping and
iteration around learning tools and
activities.
• E.g. – World Up, Institute of Play
World Up - Summer Quest Maker Party
To better support Youth Interest-Driven
Pathways…
If you’re facilitating or hosting…
• Cater to multiple levels of expertise; offer
opportunities for kids to both sample different
things as well as do deep dives and gain
expertise.
• E.g. - Iridescent
Hive Game Jam
To strengthen Hive as an
Infrastructure for Innovation…
• Invite innovative organizations from
outside of the Hive network to host a table
so that Hivers can get exposure a wider
array of pedagogies and technologies.
• E.g. HiveHQ and littleBits
If you’re facilitating or hosting…
littleBits - Brooklyn Storymakers
• Form groups of 3
• Read through the cheat sheet and discuss
• Write up feedback, +1’s, commentary,
additional recommendations you’d want to see
included, etc.
• Share out with the group
• You can also add feedback to this etherpad:
https://etherpad.mozilla.org/HRLcheatsheet-
onedayevents (or http://bit.ly/HRL_events)
• Return feedback so we can integrate!
Activity!
Thank you!
This project is made possible through the generous
support of the Hive Digital Media and Learning Fund at
the New York Community Trust.
