Urban Word Live
Urban Word Live is a digital/social media workshop
experience that seeks to cultivate youth writing communities
on a virtual platform using the models of student-centered
engagement that have proven successful in our spaces
throughout NYC. Led by the Urban Word Social Media Team
(a facet of our Youth Board), the program allows for the in-
house cultivation of youth leadership skills and initiative while
reaching outward to connect with aspiring young artists
through the following activities:

                                       1. Via Facebook and Twitter, our Youth Social Media Team
sends out weekly prompts (writing prompts, info links, video links,
                                       articles, etc.)

                                       2. Youth follow the links to explore the topic of the week, and use
the writing prompts to create original poetry pieces.

                                       3. Young people attend the workshops via live stream.

                                       4. At the end of each workshop series/season, Urban Word NYC
will create a Digital Youth Anthology of student work.
Urban Word Live

During one of our debriefing meetings, one of the youth from the social
media leadership team expressed concern about her ability to give
extensive feedback to the aspiring youth poets that are participating in the
program.

To address this issue, we experimented with tagging other youth leaders,
alum, and mentors into the community conversation around pieces that
were posted on the Urban Word Facebook page.

In this way, we were able to broaden the conversation and invite the
voices of more seasoned poets of the Urban Word community much like
what occurs here on site.

The use of tagging to give diverse and quality feedback to emerging poets
has proven to be successful and exciting for the larger conversation.
Urban Word Live

As the project continues to roll out, some of the
next steps include:

1) The compilation and publication of our Spring
Digital Anthology (to be published on our website)

2) Summer training for the youth Social Media
Team from our partner organization, Global Action
Project, about the fundamentals of camera work,
editing, live streaming, etc.

3) Qualitative research (NYU, CUNY Grad, and TC
Columbia University Grad students) on the impact
of digital and social media on the literacy efforts
and engagement of our youth community.

Words on Walls (WoW) combines digital learning with neo-futurist
graffiti to celebrate cultural diversity, neighborhood histories and
                                        the power of youth voice.

WoW will situate youth in various digital learning environments to
not only create and document their work and progress, but to also
share and present it in dynamic and innovative ways.

Over two years, Words on Walls will function to:

1) provide digital and artistic learning opportunities to NYC teens

2) showcase student work through live performances and visual/
light projections on the sides of buildings during (8) events (4
events/year)

3) serve thousands of NYC youth and local residents through
these performance events, live streams, blogs/videos/Facebook,
and print media

4) provide New Skool Journalism workshop series 2x/year to
engage youth with 21st century journalism techniques and
engage various digital platforms to share the work

5) and roll out curricula that documents and provides the tools to
replicate the program.
Words on Walls depends on the expertise and
reputation of numerous organizations to fulfill
numerous outcomes of this project.

WoW main cohort and guest cohort series will be
spearheaded by Urban Word NYC writing mentors,
and Bring to Light Festival facilitators to engage the
writing, social media prompts, and software learning
outcomes of the project, along with City Lore experts
to drive the engagement with local neighborhoods
(and run the POEMobile to promote events, and
project student work).

During each event, Urban Word NYC and City Lore
will partner with local neighborhood partners to co-host
the event celebrations. Projected sites include the
Brooklyn Museum, African Art Museum, NY Knicks,
Schomburg Center and Bring to Light Festival.

New Skool Journalism workshops will enlist Urban
Word mentors and Global Action Project facilitators to
drive all journalism techniques, community mapping
and documentary ethnographic research, with all of
the online presence facilitated by UW’s Social Media
Team.
Words on Walls

Ultimately, Words on Walls serves the entire network as it will provide an example of a
deliberate integration of Urban Word NYC programs, with the goals and outcomes of the
network. The partnership model presented will present an integrated use of each
organization’s expertise to enhance student learning opportunities. The HIVE network will
be able to access the full curriculum from the program and be invited to attend a free
training on the curriculum at New York University during Urban Word’s Preemptive
Education Conference. This curriculum will also be available as a free download on
Urban Word Live web portal.
