Why Thyroid Gland Important
Why is Your Thyroid Gland So Important?
The thyroid is a gland that is found in the lower, front section of the neck, just below the Adam s
apple. It wraps around the windpipe (trachea) and supports the voice box (larynx). It is a rich source of
blood vessels, and its shape resembles a butterfly because of its two side lobes that are joined in the
middle by a bridge (isthmus).
The function of the thyroid gland is to manufacture and store the body s important hormones that
support the internal regulation of body temperature, blood pressure levels, and the heart beat rhythm.
These hormones circulate through the bloodstream and impact the performance of every tissue and
cell. The thyroid gland hormones also play a significant role in a person s ... Show more content on

A third important hormone made by the thyroid is calcitonin. This hormone activates bones cells to
increase bone calcium. The pituitary gland is an endocrine gland that is located at the base of the brain
and weighs less than 2 ounces. This gland signals the thyroid gland during the production of hormones
by a system called TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone).
When the pituitary and thyroid glands are working properly, there are no adverse effects. However,
higher TSH signals from the pituitary gland result in lower thyroid performance. Lower pituitary TSH
signals will result in higher thyroid performance. Low levels of thyroid hormones is known as
hypothyroidism, and it causes the body s systems to slow down. Conversely, high levels of thyroid
hormones is known as hyperthyroidism, and it causes nervousness, irritability, and rapid heart
rhythms.
Thyroid disorders manifest in many forms. Some symptoms of an underactive thyroid gland include
swelling in the thyroid area, tiredness, brain fog, constipation, weight gain, and sore muscles. Some
symptoms of an overactive thyroid gland include anxiety, fast heart beat rate, diarrhea, weight loss,
frequent perspiration, and increased risk of

Functionalism And The Sociological Perspective On War
Joseph Valdez
Sociology 100
Professor McCune
August 12, 2017
Sociological Perspective on War War has been going on just about as long as people have been alive.
Whether it is just some cavemen fighting over a fire, or multiple countries going to war for justice,
there has always been some scale of war. I am going to be analyzing way through functionalist,
conflict, and symbolic interactionist perspectives.
Functionalism is a theory of the mind in contemporary philosophy, developed largely as an alternative
to both the identity theory of mind and behaviorism. Its main idea is that mental states are constituted
solely by their functional role. The conflict perspective views the social world as difficult unfair and
unreasonable. This perspective is typically more pessimistic. Symbolic interactionism is a theory that
develops from practical considerations and that alludes to people s particular utilization of dialect to
make images, normal implications, for deduction and correspondence with others.
The three major sociological perspectives offer some very different views of war and terrorism. They
each have their own opinions and stances that may be controversial, but they all give unique views on
war, past and present. Functionalism emphasizes the usefulness of certain behaviors and social
institutions for many aspects of society. Conflict perspective utilizes the idea of peace, and how war is
a negative thing all around. Symbolic interactionist perspectives can use war as

Qualities Of A Good President Essay
In any presidential election, it is important to take the characteristics of each candidate into
consideration in order to determine who is most qualified for the title president of the United States .
Being a president of a country comes with a great deal of responsibility. A president is required to
make appearances, present speeches, be involved in foreign affairs, help make military decisions, and
serve as a representative of the nation as a whole. To be a good president, one must be able to present
their arguments eloquently with sufficient evidence provided to support their claims. Though the
practice of good rhetoric is fundamental in any potential president, it is not the only the only skill
necessary to be considered a good president. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A president with a humble heart would be less likely to become corrupt with power. Since the
president s decisions affect the United States citizens as a whole, the president must be cautious and
wise. The president must be sure to explore every available avenue to find the best plan of action
which would bring forth the best result. An open mind, a strong sense of diplomacy, honesty, and
accountability are also important factors of a good president. Diplomacy is necessary to be able to
come to a compromise with an opponent by understanding and using some of the opponent s proposed
ideas to find a middle ground. Presidential candidate Donald Trump does not fit the characteristics a
good president should have because of his lack of political background, his narcissism, his inability to
argue without committing logical fallacies, and his discriminatory remarks towards people of other
races, religions, and

Ghetto Life Under the Nazis
The term ghettos was first used in relation to Jews in the year 1516 when the Venetian government
designated a specified living area for its Jewish population. During World War II, they were
established by the Nazis to isolate and control the Jews as a first step in their eventual annihilation (
Ghettos ). Throughout the War, the Nazis established over 400 ghettos in Eastern Europe and Russia
for this purpose. The Nazi ghetto overseers appointed Jewish councils, called the Judenrat, to maintain
order in the ghettos, distribute food rations and to assist the Nazis with deportations to the
concentration and death camps (Glazer). Daily life in the ghettos was very challenging for the Jews,
and they endured extreme physical hardships from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the Lodz ghetto, people suffered similarly. Blanka Rothschild recalled that she managed to acquire
a single glove in the ghetto. She passed her glove around to her friends and family, each wearing it for
a few minutes, so that the numbness in their hand would subside ( Oral History ). Emmanuel
Ringelbaum, a Warsaw ghetto inhabitant who recorded daily occurrences and conditions of the ghetto,
explained that cold and shivering Jews felt helpless as they watched others suffer from the cold. He
lamented that the most fearful sight ... [was] that of freezing children, [standing] dumbly weeping in
the street with bare feet, bare knees and torn clothing. (Dawidowicz 209)
The cramped conditions, meager food rations and general lack of cleanliness caused rampant disease
throughout the ghettos. Persistent hunger, intense labor, and constant fear of deportation caused an
inflated number of heart and circulatory system diseases among the ghetto Jews. The ghettos lacked
adequate amounts of medicine to treat the thousands of Jews suffering from typhus, dysentery,
tuberculosis, diphtheria, scarlet fever, trachoma, meningitis, and other diseases, and many of them
perished as a result. In the Lodz ghetto alone, 7,269 people died from tuberculosis (Dobroszycki). In
the Warsaw ghetto, it was estimated that 100,000 Jews contracted typhus in the first 18 months of the
ghetto s existence.

The Accusing Angel versus the Serpent in The Book of Job...
The Accusing Angel versus the Serpent in The Book of Job
The Book of Job is a very complex translation in which two images of evil are presented. Steven
Mitchell calls them the Accusing Angel (Accuser) and the Serpent. They are both very powerful and
portrayed as supernatural beings. His first reference to the Accusing Angel appears early on, however
references throughout the story do not exist. Unlike the Accusing Angel, the Serpent is mentioned
throughout the book. Disturbing imagery and ideas from the unnamable voice from the whirlwind help
to give the reader an accurate perception of the Serpent. Although the context in which they are
presented is different, the way that both are talked about, and defined, are very similar ... Show more

Even though Satan and Lucifer may seem like synonyms, there is a slight difference in their
definitions. Satan is defined as the adversary of God and lord of evil while Lucifer is defined as a
fallen rebel archangel, the Devil. By these definitions it is possible to give either name to the Accusing
Angel. The Accusing Angel fits the description of the adversary of God because he is sent to torment
Job and test his faith. The Accusing Angel could also be depicted as an adversary because of the way
he tempts God into allowing him to test Job. The Accusing Angel says that Job must be protected by
some kind of divine power and that if he was to fall into hard times, he would curse [God] to [His]
face. The Accusing Angel also fits the definition of Lucifer because of the idea that the Accusing
Angel is a fallen angel. Thus, the definition of Accusing Angel is a combination of Satan and Lucifer.
Mitchell also uses the image of a Serpent to portray evil in his rendering of The Book of Job. The
Serpent is not described in great detail until later in the story, but the description given is extensive.
The first mention of the Serpent is by Job when he issues his curse. Job says, Let the sorcerers wake
the Serpent to blast [the day I was born] with eternal blight. Job introduces the Serpent as extremely
powerful, but does not give the reader any information regarding

Criricism of Wilkie Collins’ Woman in White Essay
Criricism of Wilkie Collins Woman in White
To Mr. Collins belongs the credit of having introduced into fiction those most mysterious of mysteries,
the mysteries which are at our own doors. So said Henry James in an unsigned review of another
author s work. But his view was certainly not shared by all those who cast their opinions into the fray.
An unsigned review in the Saturday Review said of Collins work, Estimated by the standard of great
novels, the Woman in White is nowhere. Somewhere between these two points are friends and
correspondents of Mr. Wilkie Collins. Novelist George Meredith wrote to Collins himself saying, The
tension of the W[oman] in W[hite] is not exactly pleasant, though cleverly produced. One wearies of

Another is a good natured family lawyer of the old school. A third is a brave and determined lady.
Playing on Collins own comparisons to a court trial this reviewer wrote, They are not staring at the
spectators, or, if they are, they are staring listlessly and vacantly, like witnesses who are waiting to be
called before the court, and have nothing to do until their turn arrives.
Of course many positive critiques of the novel existed. One was written as a direct reaction to the
Saturday Review piece. This anonymous reviewer of the Spectator cried out , The vivid and manifold
emotions with which we read her story are still fresh in our memory, and we retain a lively sense of
the personality of every actor in it from Marian and Laura down to the old parish clerk. Yet we are told
that the author `does not attempt to paint character or passion. He is not in the least imaginative!
Mashallah! This critic ends his or her review stating, To sneer at the best thing of its kind because it is
not something else is a convenient mode of detraction, and, when done with assurance and a certain
degree of literary tact, it may pass with the unwary for authoritative criticism; but it seems a pitiful
thing after all when once the trick of it has been discovered.
And once again a middle road emerged from between the two extreme views. An unsigned in The
Times praised Collins, but with restraint. We must be content to ask, in the name of

Describe And Explain Ethanol Catabolism Pathways In Humans,
Describe and explain ethanol catabolism pathways in humans, the metabolic effects of excessive
alcohol consumption and describe the long term treatment and prognosis of this disease.
Ethanol is a small two carbon molecule, referred to as alcohol (1, 4); it comes from the fermentation
of grains such as cane sugar molasses etc. Fermentation is the process by which a substance such as
carbohydrates for example, sugars are turned into alcohol by the action of microorganisms such as
yeast, that eventually dies as alcohol levels rise during fermentation (1).
Upon consumption and digestion of alcohol, different metabolic pathways are triggered to aid in
elimination. Therefore, after alcohol is swallowed, it is absorbed primarily from the small ... Show

Oxidation of ethanol to acetaldehyde involves NAD+, an intermediate electron carrier, reduced by two
electrons to form NADH (2). The oxidation of alcohol therefore, involves the generation of a cytosolic
environment, which is extremely reduced in liver; this in turn leaves the cells of the liver cells in a
condition that is highly susceptible to damage from the by products of ethanol metabolism, such as
acetaldehyde and free radicals (2, 4).
The second oxidative pathway involved in metabolising ethanol induced by individuals who
chronically consume alcohol, is the microsomal ethanol oxidising system (MEOS), which involves a
cytochrome P450, to be specific, the CYP2E1 isozyme, which is mainly present in the microsome and
requires the electron carrier NADPH+ instead of NAD+ as for ADH (4). The induction of CYP2E1 by
excessive alcohol consumption plays a vital role in metabolizing ethanol to acetaldehyde at elevated
levels of ethanol concentrations (2, 3, 4). In addition to CYP2E1, inducing ethanol oxidation in the
liver, CYP2E1ÂŹ dependent ethanol oxidation may also occur in other tissues, such as the brain, where
there is low levels of ADH activity. CYP2E1 also produces ROS, which increase the risk of tissue
damage. Induction of the MEOS pathways, which involves CYP2E1, can lead to the production

Analysis Of The Book Dostoevsky
Xiaolu Wu In the beginning of Five Articles, Dostoevsky talks about how Russia remains an enigma
to the western world, and how the European view of Russia is narrow, stereotypical, superficial and
largely imaginary. Dostoevsky claims that for Europeans, Russians seem to be barbarians and
Europeans at the same time and their identities remain ambiguous for the Europeans, sometimes even
for themselves. But generally, the idea of Russians for Europeans is that Russians are inferior to other
Europeans, are unfaltering in battles, but are not intelligent and mostly uneducated. But this idea
comes from a detached way of observation even for those Europeans who spend time in Russia
studying this country.
According to Dostoevsky, the Germans come to Russia and judge the Russians by the standard of a
perfect German without realizing that Russians have completely distinct characters. Therefore the
Germans assume an arrogant attitude towards the Russians. While the Frenchmen who go to Russia
bring their stereotypical view of Russia along with them and see everything through the lens of their
preformed stereotypes, like how Russian culture is replaced by the invading new western culture.
However, Dostoevsky refutes this Frenchmen s idea by claiming that the Russians have already taken
the fruit of western civilization and have gone beyond it. The products and ideas coming from western
civilization only serve as a new element, a new force in Russia s process of returning to

Persuasive Essay On The Seaworld
SeaWorld has been a well loved and renowned place to the USA and the families in it for over 53
years. The world famous entertainment park is well known for its wide variety of oceanic animals, and
of course, the part that brings them the most fame: their killer whale shows. Because killer whales are
so hard to find in the ocean, and going out on a whale watching boat is usually quite expensive, many
people have ended up opting for the choice of going to SeaWorld to see these animals. These shows
are considered to be spectacular to some audiences, and an abusive nightmare to others. Despite the
fact that many people love SeaWorld and consider it to be a fun and family friendly place, the person
with educated knowledge about what really goes on in this place could never see it the same way
again, and should want something to be done about it. SeaWorld has caused controversial problems to
animal lovers, the people who work there, and of course the killer whales themselves. SeaWorld
should be talked about more in schools, educating more young people in hopes that one day there is
enough people to take a stand and get this place to stop keeping killer whales captive.
In the truth revealing documentary Blackfish , the film reveals what these killer whales in
entertainment parks such as SeaWorld go through, along with the trainers who work with them. The

Statement of Purpose for Becoming a Pediatric Resident
I believe that empathy and interpersonal regard are the foundation stones of human connectedness.
Growing up in the fast growing city of New Delhi in India, I have witnessed several children grow in
front of my eyes. This offered me an opportunity to see how this time of life has an effect on the

Children are like that soft clay. What they do in childhood defines what they ll be as an adult. This is

The Mall of America (MOA) in Minneapolis opened its doors in the summer of 1992 to great fanfare.
Touted as the largest mall in the world, it was divided into four courts, each with its own dining areas.
For many people, the MOA represented the best and worst of the suburban shopping mall taken to its

options; the centre of mall featured both an amusement park and an aquarium.
In many ways, though MOA was a far bigger immediate success than anticipated, its completion also
marked the beginning of a shift in mall culture. Shoppers started to turn away from the mega malls

The Word-Pregnancy Model Of The Logogen Model
Word recognition is the reader s ability to correctly identify words without needing contextual aid.
People tend to recognize words faster if they are more frequent (i.e. more common in their everyday
language), a psychological phenomenon known as the word frequency effect. An example of a high
frequency word is the , whereas promiscuous , for instance, is a low frequency word. Similarly, people
tend to be better at correctly recognizing letters within words compared to isolated letters and to
orthographically illegal strings (i.e. nonwords, such as SUT ). This is known as the word superiority
effect.
Many models attempt to explain the different phenomena that arose as a result of studying reading.
The logogen model (Morton, 1969) aims to explain the word frequency effect in terms of low or high
thresholds. Each logogen contains a number of characteristics about given words, such as meaning,
appearance and sound. A logogen will be activated by psychological stimuli or contextual information
that triggers the most characteristics. When the activation level rises above the threshold level, that
word is selected. As there is no comparison between logogens, more than one response can be
triggered by one stimulus. High frequency words (those most commonly used), have a lower
threshold, meaning that they require less perceptual power to recognize and decode from the mental
lexicon, than low frequency words. Once the threshold is fired, the meaning

General Grain Theory Case Study
The third part of the general strain theory is the removal of positively valued stimuli. The removal of
positively valued stimuli could include many things. Some things that could be involved in negative
stimuli could be the death of a family member/friend, the loss of a relationship, the loss of a substance
that one might be addicted to, (coffee, drugs, videogames etc.) the loss of previously owned money, or
even the loss of a cell phone. The removal of positively valued stimuli could include anything that was
valued and then is taken away by some force (Bernard, Snipes, and Gerould, 2010, p. 164 165). In the

Compare And Contrast The Two Major Carriers Of T And AT T
The two major carriers in my area are T Mobile and AT T. Since I live 30 minutes from a major
metropolitan area and there are swampy areas between me and the metropolitan, I generally do not
benefit from the latest cellular technology. Most of the towers in the area are owned or operated by AT
T or T Mobile. Since T Mobile and AT T use the GSM standard, they can share the same towers and
support each other s customers. AT T and T Mobile have a strong 2G presence in the area. AT T
installed a decent 3G infrastructure about three years ago to handle the increase in the number of
devices sold in the area. T Mobile has skipped the 3G installation in most of my area and moved
directly to 4G LTE installations. There are still very few T Mobile

Official Language In The United States
According to urban legends, German was almost the official language of the United States (Sick,
Bastian). In the myth, a group of Germans living in the United States got a petition for German to be
the official language of the United States to Congress in 1794. By one vote, it didn t pass. As you can
see, having an official language in the USA was a topic of debate ever since the founding fathers were
alive ( National American? ). Having a national language would mean all official government business
is conducted in English ( Official English ). I believe that the USA shouldn t have an official language
since it goes against freedom of speech, it would be racist, and it wouldn t help unite the country.
The first reason for that is that it would go against freedom of speech. If you were the president, you
wouldn t be able to give speeches and talk about anything in any language other than English. If you
wanted to create laws in a state like Hawaii in the official language, you wouldn t be able to because
the official language in Hawaii is Hawaiian ( Hawaiian Language Basics ). This goes against freedom
of speech because you wouldn t be allowed to speak however you want to without interference from
the government ( What Does Free Speech Mean? ). If having your freedom of speech right comes into
play if you need to make a cake, then having the right to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Immigrants to the USA mostly aren t white. Most of them come from central America and east Asia (
Largest Immigrant Groups Over Time ). If one of those immigrants wanted to get involved with
government, or at least learn the laws from the source, they wouldn t be able to access the documents
in their own language. We would be preventing them from learning about how to abide by our laws. If
the United States wants to grow and become more diverse, it should make everything more accessible

The Security Problems Faced By Cloud Computing

In order to overcome the security problems faced by cloud computing a new technology known as
Homomorphic encryption is being put to use. It is a type of encryption that allows all the
computational process to be made available to carry on cryptographic which is one on a plain text
using an algorithm. This is one of the most improved and effective technique used in today s
architecture that is related to communication systems. This encryption combined all the different
services that are needed together without letting out the data to any of these services. This
homomorphic encryption data can be transferred into cryptographic encryption by altering the design.

On the other hand any cryptographic encryption that s allows only limited arbitrary functions such as
multiple addition options but only one multiplicative option to perform on data is known as partially
homomorphic encryption. When compared with complete homomorphic encryption partial encryption
is much faster and more intact. Although this encryption is open to attacks and can be attacked at its
base but if this encryption is properly used then it can perform computations in a secure environment.
One of its important features is to secure data on cloud. It allows customers to feel secure that their
data has been protected on cloud but at times when the customer wants to edit their data then the data
needs to be decrypted by the cloud service provider. The entire security of your data is lost and the
cloud provider who is in procession of the secret key can alter your personal data. The idea of
homomorphic encryption started way back but breakthrough in recent times with complete
homomorphic encryption would break down the problems faced by security in cloud computing and
would wide spread cloud adaption.
New solution:
Homomorphic encryption are studied widely after they became very important and pat of many

Band Personal Narrative
Ba Dum Tss Chilly early mornings, where the only perk of waking up at five a.m. is getting to see the
beautiful sunrises. The smell of turf mixed with sweat. The sounds of laughter, horns bleating, and
drums booming ringing through the air. One amazing word comes to mind when I think of these
things band. Whether it s a Saturday competition, long class periods dedicated to rehearsal, or Friday
night football games, band has never ceased to be a source of enjoyment for me. Over the years, it has
become an undeniable piece of my identity; something that I could not possibly function without. I
may not have started out in band from a young age, but I have been a hardcore music addict ever since

Oh, you would make a lovely flute player! countless people told me when I explained about joining
band. I ignored them though, because my mind had been made up long ago. Percussion was the only
section for me. I crept in on that first day, nervous as could be. What if I didn t fit in? What if I wasn t
as talented as the rest of them? Luckily for me, I saw a familiar face right away Austin Britton. He had
been in my homeroom in sixth grade, and had been very kind to me. Of course, being himself he
immediately tried to sell me some crap about all these crazy strict rules they had in band, but I saw
right through it. Everyone else was surprisingly welcome, a characteristic I hadn t experienced with
many other people in public school so far. I immediately felt right at home. Fast forward another year,
and eighth grade is upon me, bringing another band year with it. I was definitely in my element, I even
tried out for district band and made it! I spent an entire day in November of that year rehearsing with
other students from the surrounding area, and was able to help give an amazing concert that same
night. It was one of the most enriching experiences of my life so far. By the end of middle school, I

The Last Bastion of Personal Freedom Essay
The Last Bastion of Personal Freedom
A person up to date in today s society must acknowledge the importance and the parcticality of the
internet. Just as in other areas of society, personal freedoms are stretched to the very limit on this
modern invention, raising isuues in regards to what type of information the internet should be allowed
to broadcast. Since its inception, the internet has spawned overnight millionaires, served as the new
information medium, and even played host to some heinous crimes. The topic of greatest concern
though, is in how the people legislate the division between what is obscence and what is allowable.
The way that these issues are dealt with will shape the very form in which the internet and other ...

The Internet is a unique forum in at least one regard: while other forms of communication such as
magazines or videos must be physically brought into a hostile jurisdiction, allowing you to choose
whether to do business there, the content of your adult website can be viewed by anyone anywhere
with a computer and Internet access. What this means for adult site webmasters is that it doesn t
matter where you, your pictures, or server are located you risk prosecution if a prosecutor anywhere
views your adult website or home page and believes that the content is obscene. Perhaps that in this
respect, the internet does deserve legislation is regards to obscenity. For example, is it fair that a man
in Maine, who has followed to the best of his ability, the laws in that state in regards to obscenity, is
prosecuted for displaying what a man in Florida deems as obscene, where the state laws regarding this
issue are much more severe? In this day and age, people rely on the technology world to provide an

Asian American Culture Characteristics
Asia as a world region is extremely diverse in terms of religion, language, customs, traditions, and
lifestyles. The region contains the largest percent of the world s population, containing both China and
India, as well is the largest producer of tea and rice. Thus, the five most important characteristics that
make Asia unique as a world region are the region s large, dense population, rice culture, tea culture,
array of religion, and multiple intricate languages.
The first characteristic of the Asian region making it unique as a whole is the enormous population it
boasts and provides to the world s total population. From the table 1: Largest Populations in Asia of

Tea has been a prominent aspect of Asian culture for a very long time. It is said that the discovery of
tea can be placed at about 5,000 years ago, and that tea drinkers were traditionally seen as the
academics and cultural elites of society (The History of Tea). Tea was a way to distinguish the elites of
society from the rest of society, as it is a staple beverage, a curative, and a symbol of status (Tea
Power point, slide 3). As tea diffused to other areas of Asia from China, it gained prominence in other
aspects as well. Today it is used for medicinal benefits and is believed to cure many ailments. From
helping with a common cold to healing more severe conditions, tea is used by many. Tea is such an
integral part of Asian culture that the most basic of tea time begins when the guest enters (Tea Power
point, slide 4). As well as being used for medicinal purposes, when tea diffused through Asia it
became a major source of profit in the region. For example, Sri Lanka became a major tea producing
country in Asia. According to the tea power point in class, 25% of the value of all Sri Lanka s exports
are accounted for by tea (tea Power point, slide 43). This being said, there are many countries
throughout Asia that rely on tea to survive economically. Another aspect of tea that makes the region
unique is simply the fact that there are so many variations of tea that are grown specifically in certain
parts of the region. It makes each tea special and distinct to a particular area. For the case of Sri
Lanka, black tea is the predominate tea produced. According to the power point, the main difference is
in origin, that is, green tea is produced in China and Japan, while black tea is produced in India and Sri
Lanka (Tea Power point, slide 48). As a result of the cultural, medicinal, and economical roles tea
plays in the Asian

Racism Through the Decades
Should The adventures of Huckleberry Finn be banned from schools? In the past century many people
have argued whether it should or shouldn t be. In many perspectives, this book taught people what it
was like back then and how it used to be in 1884. Others believe that, the book was full of racial slurs
and was just racist in general. The controversy between both sides of this book has had tremendous
opinions spoken and has really changed others mind about it but if you really decypher the book it isn
t as racist as people would like to believe. It shouldn t be banned from schools because students
shouldn t be censored in what they read, especially if it been classified as literature. Stories like this
help students realize what it was like for colored people back then and help justify their understanding
of racism in the south. Just because the book has some vulgar language in it, doesn t mean the children
should be censored by it. Theres a good chance that they are hearing worse just from their peers, at
least when they read stories like The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, they are
learning actual history and making connections on how it used to be. If you were to wipe out this book
from schools, it would be taking away the opportunity to learn about what Twain teaches in his books
like attitudes in the south, new perspectives, and examples of satire. Twain was a very ingenuity
author, which is the precise reason that his works should be taught in

A Character Analysis Of The Character Of Scrooge
Scrooge is an overly grumpy, greedy, curmudgeon, mild, insensitive, thoughtless, dolorous, elderly
man who lives in a house all by himself. He has silver, gray hair, a pointed nose, and wiry chin. He
acts like a harsh, miserable, lonely, gloomy, and depressed fellow. He also was very unfriendly to
those young fellows who were trying to gather donations for the poor. When Scrooge was younger, he
was actually very kind and generous to the people around him. Scrooge is very inconsiderate of
others, and according to the text on page one, stave one it said that No wind blew was bitterer than he ,
and he was a person who did not believe in the Christmas spirit until a trio of ghosts shows him his
past, present, and future.
According to the text the first of spirits Scrooge met was the past. When the first of the three spirits
(the past) brought Scrooge to see himself in the past, it was very tragic for Scrooge. The lesson that
Scrooge learns is that never let good time with family and friends pass by. A example from the text
that it was tragic for Scrooge was that the text said said Remove me, Scrooge exclaimed, I cannot bear
it! . In the passage it states that as soon as Scrooge passed through his very own wall he said Good
Heaven! Scrooge said, clasping his hands together, as he looked about him. I was bred in this place, I
was a boy here. Scrooge was actually very pleasant with the seeing his past.

Second Wave Of Feminism Analysis
The Second Wave of Feminism took place in the 1960s and 70s, a time of political and social activism
in the United States. Up until the late 1950s and early 1960s, the quintessential American woman was
a homemaker, a wife, and a mother (Gorman 6). For her, success was seen as having a husband with a
good job who could provide for his wife and family (6). As stated by Jacqueline Laks Gorman, the
frustration of the societal limits faced by American women of the mid twentieth century caused
women to unite to fight for equality and women s rights (5).
Many believe that the spark for the Second Wave of feminism and the modern feminist movement was
the release of Betty Friedan s book, The Feminine Mystique in 1963 (13). In her book, Friedan

1984 Mind Control Analysis
In our modern world we don t often think about the possibility that somebody could potentially gain
control of our minds. However even if we don t think about it, it doesn t make it any less of a fact. In
the book 1984 as well as in real life mind control proves to be a key technique in gaining power and
control over people.
In the book 1984 the government s main objective is to gain control of the population by shaping the
way they think. They don t want their people to obey their rules because of fear or a sense of duty,
rather they want the people to wholeheartedly believe in the government. Using mind control
techniques the ingsoc government transforms its people into beings who cannot think on their own,
but need guidance for every part ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some of these very voluntary techniques such as hypnotism are quite different from the ones in 1984.
However many organizations such as the marines use mind control in a semi involuntary way. People
such as marines go into the program believing that they will just be taught how to protect their
country, but the disciplinary measures they go through often consist of mind control. They are
expected to lose their individuality, always act as they are told, and change their way of thinking.
These techniques can also be used in religious organizations to gain a fully committed following.
All of these unnerving real life examples raise questions of whether people actually have full control
over their own minds. However most of the examples provided in Captive Minds are quite different
than the methods in 1984 in the fact that they aren t brutally forced. In Canada we don t have to spend
our days worrying that someone will force us into joining a mind washing cult. The only thing we
have to do is avoid joining organizations or groups with blind faith by finding out what they are about

Corrupt Leaders In Lord Of The Flies By William Golding
Corrupt leaders. To follow? Or not to follow?
Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man s character, give him power. Abraham
Lincoln. Once you give a man power, it all goes downhill from there. In The Lord of the Flies by
William Golding, there is one group of boys on an island. The boys elect one chief, Ralph, but another
bigun thinks he s a better chief. So the other boy, Jack, leaves and forms a new tribe with most of the
boys. After a little bit of time, the groups begin to fight resulting in a couple of tragic deaths. Why
would people follow a corrupt leader like Jack? They follow them because they feel like the new
leader can help them better than the old one; they think that the leader or ruler can provide for them
and it doesn t matter who that leader is, they will follow them because there s no one else to follow.
One reason that people will follow a corrupt leader is that the people will look for anyone else to leave
them other than their current leader. All at once, Robert was screaming and struggling with the
strength of the frenzy. Jack had him by the hair and was brandishing a knife behind him was Roger,
fighting to get close. The chant rose ritually, as at the last moment of a dance or a hunt (114). Even
though Jack was hurting one of his friends, they still wanted to follow him because he could protect
them and Ralph could not. Jack was also the only other boy who could lead them. A second example
of this is Why do you hate

  • 2. Why Thyroid Gland Important Why is Your Thyroid Gland So Important? The thyroid is a gland that is found in the lower, front section of the neck, just below the Adam s apple. It wraps around the windpipe (trachea) and supports the voice box (larynx). It is a rich source of blood vessels, and its shape resembles a butterfly because of its two side lobes that are joined in the middle by a bridge (isthmus). The function of the thyroid gland is to manufacture and store the body s important hormones that support the internal regulation of body temperature, blood pressure levels, and the heart beat rhythm. These hormones circulate through the bloodstream and impact the performance of every tissue and cell. The thyroid gland hormones also play a significant role in a person s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A third important hormone made by the thyroid is calcitonin. This hormone activates bones cells to increase bone calcium. The pituitary gland is an endocrine gland that is located at the base of the brain and weighs less than 2 ounces. This gland signals the thyroid gland during the production of hormones by a system called TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone). When the pituitary and thyroid glands are working properly, there are no adverse effects. However, higher TSH signals from the pituitary gland result in lower thyroid performance. Lower pituitary TSH signals will result in higher thyroid performance. Low levels of thyroid hormones is known as hypothyroidism, and it causes the body s systems to slow down. Conversely, high levels of thyroid hormones is known as hyperthyroidism, and it causes nervousness, irritability, and rapid heart rhythms. Thyroid disorders manifest in many forms. Some symptoms of an underactive thyroid gland include swelling in the thyroid area, tiredness, brain fog, constipation, weight gain, and sore muscles. Some symptoms of an overactive thyroid gland include anxiety, fast heart beat rate, diarrhea, weight loss, frequent perspiration, and increased risk of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Functionalism And The Sociological Perspective On War Joseph Valdez Sociology 100 Professor McCune August 12, 2017 Sociological Perspective on War War has been going on just about as long as people have been alive. Whether it is just some cavemen fighting over a fire, or multiple countries going to war for justice, there has always been some scale of war. I am going to be analyzing way through functionalist, conflict, and symbolic interactionist perspectives. Functionalism is a theory of the mind in contemporary philosophy, developed largely as an alternative to both the identity theory of mind and behaviorism. Its main idea is that mental states are constituted solely by their functional role. The conflict perspective views the social world as difficult unfair and unreasonable. This perspective is typically more pessimistic. Symbolic interactionism is a theory that develops from practical considerations and that alludes to people s particular utilization of dialect to make images, normal implications, for deduction and correspondence with others. The three major sociological perspectives offer some very different views of war and terrorism. They each have their own opinions and stances that may be controversial, but they all give unique views on war, past and present. Functionalism emphasizes the usefulness of certain behaviors and social institutions for many aspects of society. Conflict perspective utilizes the idea of peace, and how war is a negative thing all around. Symbolic interactionist perspectives can use war as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

An open mind, a strong sense of diplomacy, honesty, and accountability are also important factors of a good president. Diplomacy is necessary to be able to come to a compromise with an opponent by understanding and using some of the opponent s proposed ideas to find a middle ground. During World War II, they were established by the Nazis to isolate and control the Jews as a first step in their eventual annihilation ( Ghettos ). Throughout the War, the Nazis established over 400 ghettos in Eastern Europe and Russia for this purpose. The Nazi ghetto overseers appointed Jewish councils, called the Judenrat, to maintain order in the ghettos, distribute food rations and to assist the Nazis with deportations to the concentration and death camps (Glazer). The Accusing Angel versus the Serpent in The Book of Job The Book of Job is a very complex translation in which two images of evil are presented. Steven Mitchell calls them the Accusing Angel (Accuser) and the Serpent. They are both very powerful and portrayed as supernatural beings. His first reference to the Accusing Angel appears early on, however references throughout the story do not exist. Unlike the Accusing Angel, the Serpent is mentioned throughout the book. Disturbing imagery and ideas from the unnamable voice from the whirlwind help to give the reader an accurate perception of the Serpent. Although the context in which they are presented is different, the way that both are talked about, and defined, are very similar ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though Satan and Lucifer may seem like synonyms, there is a slight difference in their definitions. Satan is defined as the adversary of God and lord of evil while Lucifer is defined as a fallen rebel archangel, the Devil. By these definitions it is possible to give either name to the Accusing Angel. The Accusing Angel fits the description of the adversary of God because he is sent to torment Job and test his faith. The Accusing Angel could also be depicted as an adversary because of the way he tempts God into allowing him to test Job. The Accusing Angel says that Job must be protected by some kind of divine power and that if he was to fall into hard times, he would curse [God] to [His] face. The Accusing Angel also fits the definition of Lucifer because of the idea that the Accusing Angel is a fallen angel. Thus, the definition of Accusing Angel is a combination of Satan and Lucifer. Mitchell also uses the image of a Serpent to portray evil in his rendering of The Book of Job. The Serpent is not described in great detail until later in the story, but the description given is extensive. The first mention of the Serpent is by Job when he issues his curse. Job says, Let the sorcerers wake the Serpent to blast [the day I was born] with eternal blight. Job introduces the Serpent as extremely powerful, but does not give the reader any information regarding ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

An unsigned review in the Saturday Review said of Collins work, Estimated by the standard of great novels, the Woman in White is nowhere. Of course many positive critiques of the novel existed. One was written as a direct reaction to the Saturday Review piece. This anonymous reviewer of the Spectator cried out , The vivid and manifold emotions with which we read her story are still fresh in our memory, and we retain a lively sense of the personality of every actor in it from Marian and Laura down to the old parish clerk. Yet we are told that the author `does not attempt to paint character or passion. He is not in the least imaginative! Mashallah! This critic ends his or her review stating, To sneer at the best thing of its kind because it is not something else is a convenient mode of detraction, and, when done with assurance and a certain degree of literary tact, it may pass with the unwary for authoritative criticism; but it seems a pitiful thing after all when once the trick of it has been discovered. • 10. Describe And Explain Ethanol Catabolism Pathways In Humans, Describe and explain ethanol catabolism pathways in humans, the metabolic effects of excessive alcohol consumption and describe the long term treatment and prognosis of this disease. Ethanol is a small two carbon molecule, referred to as alcohol (1, 4); it comes from the fermentation of grains such as cane sugar molasses etc. Fermentation is the process by which a substance such as carbohydrates for example, sugars are turned into alcohol by the action of microorganisms such as yeast, that eventually dies as alcohol levels rise during fermentation (1). Upon consumption and digestion of alcohol, different metabolic pathways are triggered to aid in elimination. Therefore, after alcohol is swallowed, it is absorbed primarily from the small ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Oxidation of ethanol to acetaldehyde involves NAD+, an intermediate electron carrier, reduced by two electrons to form NADH (2). The oxidation of alcohol therefore, involves the generation of a cytosolic environment, which is extremely reduced in liver; this in turn leaves the cells of the liver cells in a condition that is highly susceptible to damage from the by products of ethanol metabolism, such as acetaldehyde and free radicals (2, 4). The second oxidative pathway involved in metabolising ethanol induced by individuals who chronically consume alcohol, is the microsomal ethanol oxidising system (MEOS), which involves a cytochrome P450, to be specific, the CYP2E1 isozyme, which is mainly present in the microsome and requires the electron carrier NADPH+ instead of NAD+ as for ADH (4). The induction of CYP2E1 by excessive alcohol consumption plays a vital role in metabolizing ethanol to acetaldehyde at elevated levels of ethanol concentrations (2, 3, 4). In addition to CYP2E1, inducing ethanol oxidation in the liver, CYP2E1ÂŹ dependent ethanol oxidation may also occur in other tissues, such as the brain, where there is low levels of ADH activity. CYP2E1 also produces ROS, which increase the risk of tissue damage. Induction of the MEOS pathways, which involves CYP2E1, can lead to the production ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Analysis Of The Book Dostoevsky Xiaolu Wu In the beginning of Five Articles, Dostoevsky talks about how Russia remains an enigma to the western world, and how the European view of Russia is narrow, stereotypical, superficial and largely imaginary. Dostoevsky claims that for Europeans, Russians seem to be barbarians and Europeans at the same time and their identities remain ambiguous for the Europeans, sometimes even for themselves. But generally, the idea of Russians for Europeans is that Russians are inferior to other Europeans, are unfaltering in battles, but are not intelligent and mostly uneducated. But this idea comes from a detached way of observation even for those Europeans who spend time in Russia studying this country. According to Dostoevsky, the Germans come to Russia and judge the Russians by the standard of a perfect German without realizing that Russians have completely distinct characters. Therefore the Germans assume an arrogant attitude towards the Russians. While the Frenchmen who go to Russia bring their stereotypical view of Russia along with them and see everything through the lens of their preformed stereotypes, like how Russian culture is replaced by the invading new western culture. However, Dostoevsky refutes this Frenchmen s idea by claiming that the Russians have already taken the fruit of western civilization and have gone beyond it. The world famous entertainment park is well known for its wide variety of oceanic animals, and of course, the part that brings them the most fame: their killer whale shows. Because killer whales are so hard to find in the ocean, and going out on a whale watching boat is usually quite expensive, many people have ended up opting for the choice of going to SeaWorld to see these animals. These shows are considered to be spectacular to some audiences, and an abusive nightmare to others. Despite the fact that many people love SeaWorld and consider it to be a fun and family friendly place, the person with educated knowledge about what really goes on in this place could never see it the same way again, and should want something to be done about it. SeaWorld has caused controversial problems to animal lovers, the people who work there, and of course the killer whales themselves. People tend to recognize words faster if they are more frequent (i.e. more common in their everyday language), a psychological phenomenon known as the word frequency effect. An example of a high frequency word is the , whereas promiscuous , for instance, is a low frequency word. Similarly, people tend to be better at correctly recognizing letters within words compared to isolated letters and to orthographically illegal strings (i.e. nonwords, such as SUT ). This is known as the word superiority effect. Many models attempt to explain the different phenomena that arose as a result of studying reading. The logogen model (Morton, 1969) aims to explain the word frequency effect in terms of low or high thresholds. Each logogen contains a number of characteristics about given words, such as meaning, appearance and sound. A logogen will be activated by psychological stimuli or contextual information that triggers the most characteristics. When the activation level rises above the threshold level, that word is selected. As there is no comparison between logogens, more than one response can be triggered by one stimulus. High frequency words (those most commonly used), have a lower threshold, meaning that they require less perceptual power to recognize and decode from the mental lexicon, than low frequency words. In the myth, a group of Germans living in the United States got a petition for German to be the official language of the United States to Congress in 1794. By one vote, it didn t pass. As you can see, having an official language in the USA was a topic of debate ever since the founding fathers were alive ( National American? ). Having a national language would mean all official government business is conducted in English ( Official English ). I believe that the USA shouldn t have an official language since it goes against freedom of speech, it would be racist, and it wouldn t help unite the country. The first reason for that is that it would go against freedom of speech. If you were the president, you wouldn t be able to give speeches and talk about anything in any language other than English. If you wanted to create laws in a state like Hawaii in the official language, you wouldn t be able to because the official language in Hawaii is Hawaiian ( Hawaiian Language Basics ). This goes against freedom of speech because you wouldn t be allowed to speak however you want to without interference from the government ( What Does Free Speech Mean? ). It is a type of encryption that allows all the computational process to be made available to carry on cryptographic which is one on a plain text using an algorithm. This is one of the most improved and effective technique used in today s architecture that is related to communication systems. On the other hand any cryptographic encryption that s allows only limited arbitrary functions such as multiple addition options but only one multiplicative option to perform on data is known as partially homomorphic encryption. When compared with complete homomorphic encryption partial encryption is much faster and more intact. Although this encryption is open to attacks and can be attacked at its base but if this encryption is properly used then it can perform computations in a secure environment. One of its important features is to secure data on cloud. It allows customers to feel secure that their data has been protected on cloud but at times when the customer wants to edit their data then the data needs to be decrypted by the cloud service provider. The entire security of your data is lost and the cloud provider who is in procession of the secret key can alter your personal data. The idea of homomorphic encryption started way back but breakthrough in recent times with complete homomorphic encryption would break down the problems faced by security in cloud computing and would wide spread cloud adaption. Tea was a way to distinguish the elites of society from the rest of society, as it is a staple beverage, a curative, and a symbol of status (Tea Power point, slide 3). In many perspectives, this book taught people what it was like back then and how it used to be in 1884. Others believe that, the book was full of racial slurs and was just racist in general. The controversy between both sides of this book has had tremendous opinions spoken and has really changed others mind about it but if you really decypher the book it isn t as racist as people would like to believe. It shouldn t be banned from schools because students shouldn t be censored in what they read, especially if it been classified as literature. Stories like this help students realize what it was like for colored people back then and help justify their understanding of racism in the south. Just because the book has some vulgar language in it, doesn t mean the children should be censored by it. In the book 1984 the government s main objective is to gain control of the population by shaping the way they think. They are expected to lose their individuality, always act as they are told, and change their way of thinking. Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man s character, give him power. Abraham Lincoln. Once you give a man power, it all goes downhill from there. In The Lord of the Flies by William Golding, there is one group of boys on an island. The boys elect one chief, Ralph, but another bigun thinks he s a better chief. So the other boy, Jack, leaves and forms a new tribe with most of the boys. After a little bit of time, the groups begin to fight resulting in a couple of tragic deaths. Why would people follow a corrupt leader like Jack? They follow them because they feel like the new leader can help them better than the old one; they think that the leader or ruler can provide for them and it doesn t matter who that leader is, they will follow them because there s no one else to follow. One reason that people will follow a corrupt leader is that the people will look for anyone else to leave them other than their current leader. All at once, Robert was screaming and struggling with the strength of the frenzy. Jack had him by the hair and was brandishing a knife behind him was Roger, fighting to get close. The chant rose ritually, as at the last moment of a dance or a hunt (114).
