Birmingham Jail Functional Theory
Martin Luther King Jr. s Letter from a Birmingham Jail (1965) is important from both historical and
sociological points of view. It is an example of self sacrifice as in idea for the of equality of all people.
Formally, King addresses this letter that he wrote while in Birmingham jail at the clergymen who
opposed his protests. In fact, he applies it to everyone who approves of racism, and considers the
methods of nonviolent struggle to be too radical and far fetched from achieving an actual goal. From a
sociological point of view, the Letter from a Birmingham Jail shows the way of nonviolent adjustment
of the social conflict and stages of this way: collection of the facts to determine whether injustices

If they needed medical assistance, they couldn t go to the same hospital as whites.
Families of color were forced to bring up their children in a humiliating and insulting atmosphere. The
state and authorities, as one of social factors, supported the racism. Promises to restore justice and
equalize the rights of white and colored residents do not mean anything. Church leadership prefers to
stay aside the civil problems. Martin Luther King Jr. s Letter from a Birmingham Jail clearly shows
that the church acts in a cowardly manner concerning the issue of racism, supporting the state law, but
not the moral one, which claims that all men are brothers. The elements of society do not function in
harmony. As a result, the social conflict arises affecting the outlook and symbolic perception of
people. Modern society supports King s ideas and considers him to be a national hero. However, he
often found misunderstanding among his contemporaries: King s nonviolence played into the hands of
segregationists (Mott 411).
Peace and brotherhood cannot be achieved through aggression, so King chose the strategy of
nonviolent direct action. A sense of injustice, sympathy to his friends, family and even strangers
encouraged King to start nonviolent direct action. The importance was that King fought not only for
the rights of people of color, but also for the rights of all the exploited people. It shows his

following:
1. Identify the multidimensional aspect of pain.
2. Discuss the Fifth Vital Sign as part of pain management program.
3. Compare the Pain Assessment Tools.
4. Name the four phases of nociceptive pain.
5. Discuss the Fifth Vital Sign as part of pain management program.
6. Name the dental professional s potential biases toward pain.
7. Components of a quality, pain management program.
Introduction The purpose of this educational activity is to introduce pain as the fifth vital sign and
increase the dental professionals understanding of pain intensity rating scales.
Understanding Pain
Understanding Pain. Pain is subjective in its measure, self reported by patients and defined by the
individual. There is evidence that pain is under assessed and under treated, especially in highly
sensitive people and vulnerable populations such as the elderly, individuals who English is a second
language and people with disabilities.
Pain affects all aspects of life, physical, emotional, psychological, social and spiritual. Clinicians in
order to be effective need to understand these many aspects of pain management.
Definitions:
Pain is whatever the experiencing person says it is, existing whenever he says it does. (McCaffery,
1968).
Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue

Por Una Cabeza Analysis
Por una cabeza by Carlos Gardel is an iconic and genre defining piece of music. It is the most famous
piece of tango music and is a gateway to the world of tango. The summer before my junior year I took
a trip to Argentina to visit family. We visited Caminito, the birthplace of tango, and I became
fascinated by the dance and the music. I decided that I wanted to choreograph a tango for my dance
ensemble back in DC. While I thought that this was going to be simple it was quite the opposite.
Tango music is usually quite simple, yet it is often juxtaposed by the intricate moves of the dancers.
Every movement has a specific meaning and intonation. If the move is slightly off, then it changes the
meaning of the whole phrase. Each move combines

Blood Spatter Analysis Essay
Introduction
Blood Spatter Analysis (BPA) is a forensic technique to interpret bloodstain in order to understand and
recreate a crime scene that involve blood shedding event. BPA is regarded as a very crucial process in
crime investigation as it provides evidence in easing a trial process in court. The BPA was considered
as a significant area of science in crime investigation only after the year of 1955, even though, the first
study was dated back in the late 1890. There are several questions arise in blood shedding event, such
as the origin of the blood, the cause of the wound, the direction of the spatter, the position of the
victim during the event, the movement of victim after the event, and most importantly is that does the
evidence interpreted by the Blood Spatter Analyst is valid to support the case. ... Show more content

Amongst technique applied to gain an inference of an event is by using Stringing Method in order to
obtain information on the position of the victim and the direction of attack. The blood impacted on a
hard surface at an angle gives a characteristic of head and tail shape, and the direction of blood
droplets move in inferred from the direction of the tail formed on the surface. Figure 1 shows the
impact direction of the blood droplet.
Figure 1. (a)Ellipse formed upon impact. (b) Direction deduced from the formation of the tail.
As an approximation, minor axis always indicated the original diameter of the droplet and major axis
and the tail formation showing the direction of the impact. Figure 2 below shows the stringing method
to deduce the position of victim during the scene. Figure 2. Stringing Method
As shown in the figure 2 above, the position of the victim during the scene was deduced by joining
string from multiple drops of blood that impacted the wall according to the direction of individual
drops.

If for example two matters, both with the same level of urgency came to the fore at the same time,
then it would be wise to seek advice from Manager and ask him which task he would like dealth with
first and find out if another member of the team could perhaps deal with the other one.
Effective communication
There are various methods of communication we can use as a HR Professional, and which method we
choose will be dependent on the circumstances.
Listed below are three methods and their pros and cons.
Method of Communication
Advantages
Disadvantages
Verbal (Presentation)
Persuasive
Presentation two way communication
Powerful to sell decisions
Unlikely to sell a large idea without written evidence as back up
E Mail
Timely
Cannot be recalled in error
Telephone
Personal, Warm and Timely
No paper trail
Can be open to misinterpretation
If for example we were trying to sell an idea of a change that we would like to implement, a report
would indeed be factual, perhaps issued to Managers, who may not have the time to read it and would
be your key influencers as to whether your idea would be approved or not.
It would be to your advantage to give a verbal and lively presentation, which would enable you to

Mainstream Game Development is Predominately Designed by...
First of all, despite the gaming audience being half women, most AAA games are made focussed
entirely on male in mind. Ken Levine himself said that Bioshock Infinite was marketed to appeal to
frat boys. And Naughty Dog has revealed they didn t want to see what women thought of The Last of
Us and that they were trying to appeal exclusively to males. While the director of Remember me has
said the female protagonist has been killed off by publishers because men allegedly don t want to play
as a girly girl . Mainstream game development is predominately designed by men, for men. In the
same way female characters are being designed to appeal to men, so too are male characters, but not in
the objectifying sense. Objectification is the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some would say there are plenty of strong and powerful playable female characters such as Lara Croft
from Tomb Raider . But even the best playable female characters are going to be inoffensively
beautiful in some way shape or form. Lara Croft was a powerful and intelligent woman, but she was
overly sexualised in the older games. In the latest Tomb Raider game she is attractive, realistically
proportioned, properly clothed and is more human like which makes her an acceptable sexualisation
because she s not objectified.
Sexism in the Gaming Industry
For 20 years the industry s attitude was women don t play video games , although they are slowly
changing their attitude because 48% of gamers are in fact female, there is still major sexism in the
industry that remains. An indie female game developer Zoe Quinn, was trying to release her game
Depression Quest , an interactive fiction game where you play as someone living with depression, on
to Stream Greenlight. Evidently her gender, or her desire to design game, or some combination of the
two caused her to receive men dialling her number to spout rape threats, sexist comments and telling
her to kill herself. The abuse got so bad that Zoe had to change her phone number. She eventually took
the game down because she couldn t handle the abuse anymore. She then in the long run decided to try
Greenlight again, she stated that, I thought since the game got into [International independent game

The Pursuit Of Happiness By Aristotle
The pursuit of happiness is the reason for our existence (Aristotle, 2004) The Greek word that usually
gets translated as happiness is eudaimonia, and like most translations from ancient languages, there is
a loss of deeper meaning in translation. According to Aristotle happiness (eudaimonia) is the central
purpose of human life and a goal in itself (Aristotle, 2004) (Creed, Wardman 1963). Because of this
ideology, Aristotle devoted much of his time discussing and explaining this philosophy (Hughes,
2001). Even though he lived on the other side of the world as Mencius, they both came to similar
conclusions about happiness it is the cultivation of virtue (Creed, Wardman 1963). These virtues when
studied are more individualistic when compared to Confucian or Buddhist ideology. To Aristotle
happiness was not just the not just a result of one facet of life but all facets mental, spiritual, physical
and social (Hardie, 1980). In this way he introduced the idea of that the purpose (telos) of humanity
was to pursue happiness (Eudemonia) (Aristotle, 2004) (Creed, Wardman 1963). In this paper I will
discuss: what Eudemonia and telos are according to Aristotle and why I agree that the only life worth
living is one that pursues his definition of happiness.
One of Aristotle s most influential works is the Nicomachean Ethics. In these lectures he presents a
theory of happiness that is still pondered today (Creed, Wardman 1963). The central question
presented is What is the

Medieval Vs Medieval Christmas
Christmas is all about giving, friends and family gathering, feasting together, with beautiful music,
decorations and singing Christmas carols throughout the neighborhood. It is a time of ornaments, red
and green decoration, silver bells, holly, mistletoe and colorful lights. They say that it is the season to
be jolly, but how did Christmas become such a jolly and most wonderful holiday? Understanding the
religious and cultural aspects of the Medieval Christmas, such as the origin of Christmas and the
traditional celebrations of Christmas, can help us to understand and celebrate today s Christmas more
meaningfully.
The word Christmas comes from Cristes Maesse, a Middle English phrase that means Christ s Mass .

Feasting was a major part of a medieval Christmas celebration. Some of the main dishes served
included goose, venison, humble pie, mince pie and Christmas pudding. Although turkey is the most
common meat served during the holidays today, birds were not introduced to Europe during the
Middle Ages therefore, goose was the most common meat served. Venison was also a popular
alternative in medieval Christmas celebrations but was only limited to the higher class. Humble pies
were also a popular Christmas food during the medieval times. During Christmas, a Lord would give
away unwanted parts of a deer to the lower class and they would mix the heart, liver, brains and all
kinds of organs of a deer with other ingredients to make humble pie. Mince pies on the other hand
were filled with all sorts of shredded meat along with spices and fruit and were served in rectangular
cases that represented the crib of baby Jesus. The spices such as cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg also
represented the gifts brought to Jesus by the three wise men. The same spices were also used for the
making of the Christmas puddings. Christmas puddings evolved from the medieval dish of frumenty a
spicy porridge that was served as dessert and were part of the medieval tradition of Christmas

Dr. Jeanne Brooks (2015) stated that there are large amounts stress that is continuous and can become
a traumatic experience to a child. Stressful reaction produce chemicals that can negatively impact

Transvaginal Ultrasound Essay
As a result, even tortuous and lengthy tracts may be monitored at any level. Most times, no contrast
material is required, as urine or menstrual blood are easily recognizable to demonstrate the tract and
the direction of the flow. Lastly, low or high pressure may be generated real time during the scan, and
thus leading to the clear manifestation of the flow as well as the resistance of the fistula.
Ureterovaginal
Ureterovaginal fistulas can be detected by means of transvaginal ultrasound, as the distal third of the

Ultrasound equipment is readily available, easy to use and most surgical specialties have incorporated
basic sonographic skills in their training curriculum. Diagnosis of a fistula may be completed during
the first scan and dynamic examination with patient involvement can provide additional clinical
information. If required, contrast material might be used intracavitary and as a rule is not associated
with a burden to the patient s health. We should bare in mind, that color Doppler or 3D imaging can
shed light on the characteristics of the fistula, such as inflammation of the tissues and edema. Without
a doubt, that information can be very helpful for the timing of the procedure, whereas, serial
sonographic examinations may reveal changes in characteristics of the fistula over time. Ultrasound
might well be applied intra operatively, if needed. It is worth mentioning, that ultrasound examination
might be undertaken by the surgeon, thus providing crucial additional information for the clinical
investigation. Another benefit associated with the usage of ultrasonography is that it can be performed
even during the physical examination, just next to the examination bed with minimal stress to the
patient. Last but not least, ultrasonography uses different probes, but all may be used, if required,
during an examination on the same sonographic

Intrapersonal Conflict
Intrapersonal conflict reveals itself through different individual attitudes and behaviours. Most of
these attitudes and behaviours may originate from self induced, emotional or inner feelings which may
include frustration and emotional instability. These attitudes or behaviours may lead to absenteeism
and destructive behaviour among individuals in an organization (Hughes, 2001). Poor attitudes and
behaviours which result from intrapersonal conflict usually decrease the performance and efficiency of
an organization. On the other hand when it is managed in the right manner it helps individuals
promote capacity to adapt and attain a balance in the working relations with the organization.
The management of intrapersonal conflicts can be achieved through the implementation of two
strategies which include cognitive strategies and behavioural strategies. Cognitive strategies, often
referred to as defence mechanisms, help an individual to falsify, distort or deny a particular conflict.
Cognitive strategies represent an attempt to control or manage negative and disturbing feelings
associated with conflict and to allow an individual to carry on with his normal activities. Cognitive
strategies include repression (an attempt to push conflict out of existence), rationalization (hiding the
truth from oneself), fantasy or even denial of reality. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

An Ohio court ruled that the police needed a warrant to search a cellphone because, unlike a piece of
paper that might be stuffed inside a suspect s pocket and can be confiscated during an arrest, a
cellphone may hold large amounts of private data.
But California s highest court said the police could look through a cellphone without a warrant so long
as the phone was with the suspect at the time of arrest.
Judges across the nation have written tomes about whether a cellphone is akin to a container like a
suitcase stuffed with marijuana that the police might find in the trunk of a car or whether, as the judge
in the Rhode Island murder case suggested, it is more comparable to a face to face conversation. That
judge, Judith C. Savage, described text messages as raw, unvarnished and immediate, revealing the
most intimate of thoughts and emotions. That is why, she said, citizens can reasonably expect them to
be private.
There is little disagreement about the value of cellphone data to the police. In response to a
Congressional inquiry, cellphone carriers said they responded in 2011 to 1.3 million demands from
law enforcement agencies for text messages and other information about subscribers.
Among the most precious information in criminal inquiries is the location of suspects, and when it
comes to location records captured by smartphones, court rulings have also been inconsistent. Privacy

Woodstock Research Paper
Woodstock was a four day long music and arts festival. The event was held on August 15 to 18 in
1969. Woodstock took place on Max Yasgur s Dairy Farm in Bethel, New York. Nearly 500,000
people attended the festival, some as young as even two years old. The festival became a free event as
people began to show up because even though tickets were sold there were far too many people to
check tickets. The people who attended Woodstock savor all memories they have of the four day
festival because it truly was a one time event, even though it was been tried to be recreated before.

Woodstock smaller movements such as feminism and the green movement began to thrive and more
people were a part of the movements than ever. Citizens of the Woodstock nation claimed to have

Relationship Between Consumer Sentiment And Adr Price Essay
These studies discussed above implicitly assume that the local and US investors have homogeneous
expectations about future prospects of all markets. However, in practice, different market conditions
can cause investors to generate differential risk perceptions. Some studies argue that investor
sentiment may augment to the price divergence between ADRs and their underlying stocks.
 Heterogeneous Investor Sentiment
Grossmann et al. (2007) perhaps is the first to investigate the relationship between consumer
sentiment and ADR price differences. Using a fixed effects panel data approach, they provide
evidence in support of the hypothesis that costly arbitrage factors influence ADR price differentials.
30 Moreover, they argue that sentiment could also help explain the mispricing of ADRs. Specifically,
they test whether consumer sentiment (measured by consumer sentiment indices) help to explain the
divergence between the prices of ADRs and that of their underlying assets. Their results suggest that
the more optimistic U.S. consumers are the lower the ADR premiums. Based on the findings, they
conclude that the prices of ADRs and that of the underlying stocks are more responsive to US
consumer sentiment as to the consumer sentiment of the country of origin.
Using a cross sectional panel data approach, Arquette et al. (2008) model the variations in ADR
discount as a function of expected changes in exchange rate expectations and differences in investor
sentiment.31 The sample

Light Absorption Research Paper
Light is said to be the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum that all people can see. Many people
call this portion visible light, and know that visible light has a range of many colors. These main
colors are usually said to be red, orange, blue, indigo, violet, yellow, and green. The colors of different
objects are determined by the interaction between light and the electrons of the atoms that make up an
object. The object is made up of specific wavelengths of white light unique to the object, and it
absorbs the light according to its wavelengths. Molecules have many states, two of these states, are
states where the electron is excited and neutral when it is originally found. Molecules and atoms can
only absorb light when the energy of a photon matches the energy difference between these two states.

The color wheel relates the wavelengths of transmitted light to absorbed light. Objects absorb different
amounts of white light, which is what makes an object have its unique color. The white light is what in
turn makes color. While there were many theories throughout history on light, the first theories about
light were created by the Ancient Greeks. These theories tried to describe light as a ray which moved
directionally to a point. Pythagoras was best known for his theorem of the right triangle that was made
up of the assumption that vision was made from light rays that came out of a person s eye and hit an
object. This is true in many senses. In reflection, when light hits a smooth surface, it hits then bounces
off. A reflected ray always comes off the surface of a material at an angle equal to the angle at which
the incoming ray hit the surface. However, when light bounces off a rough surface, light reflects at
numerous angles

Aneurysms Essay
To begin with, the word aneurysm derives from the Latin word aneurysma. In Latin aneurysma means
dilation and dilation means that act of expanding. From this, it is easier to figure out what an
aneurysm really is. The definition of the English word aneurysm means, blood filled dilation of a
blood vessel. There are several different types of aneurysm, but this report will only cover a cerebral
one. Intracranial aneurysms are classified as dissecting, saccular, and fusiform. There are many causes
of intracranial aneurysms. Some of the most common causes would include fibromuscular dysphasia,
atherosclerosis, and arteriovenous malformation. Some that are less common, but do occur would

Saccular aneurysms are the most common and are easily identified because of the berrylike sacs on
the veins or arteries. They are caused by weakness in the vessel wall layers. The sac itself grows from
the intima and adventitia of an vessel. When this occurs abnormal hemodynamic pressure on the
cerebral arteries causes rupture. Saccular aneurysm can be caused by infections, tumors, or drugs.
Aneurysms occur to people in their early forties to their late fifties. Most aneurysms occur to people
that are around age sixty. Intracranial aneurysms are rare to children and only account for 2% of the
total aneurysms. The younger the patient with an intracranial aneurysm the larger the sac. Location is
a big part in classifying the type of aneurysm. About 86.5% of all intracranial aneurysms occurs in the
carotid region. The pieces all fall to place when using the Hunt and Hess scale, which measures the
current status of the expansion. There is a grade 0 to grade 5 scale. Zero is a non ruptured aneurysm
and 5 is basically the point were there is not much doctors can do to make the patient live. Vasospasm
is the term used when a constriction of a vein or artery occurs. It is also the cause of death when an
aneurysm occurs. More than 50% of all surviving patients that get an intracranial aneurysm have
neurological defects. Treatment is wonderful when treating intracranial aneurysm. The most common

These students will most likely move their lips silently when reading. Classes that are taught in a
lecture type style will be most beneficial for these learners. To retain information these students will
repeat their notes over and over out loud. Auditory learners will most likely have a talent in music by
being able to better hear different pitches of sound and tunes (Duker, 1971). Memorizing songs will
come easily to them and they may find themselves memorizing their lessons in the form of some
melody in their head. These students will be most likely be at ease when they have to put their ideas in

In the classroom teachers should emphasize that their students who are auditory learners should bring
a tape recorder to class so that they can listen to the lecture at home. Teachers should also make sure
they explain concepts that and not just write them down (Slaughter, 2002). Especially material learned
from reading should be discussed as a class. Along with class discussions, class debates will be best
suited for a verbal learner. Records that put the lesson in a form of a song or rhymes to remember

The Other Slavery Summary
Professor of History at the University of California, Davis Andres Resendez, constructs a detailed
portrait of Native American enslavement in The Other Slavery. Part historical synthesis, part original
research the monograph argues that decimated Native North American populations were a result of
mass slavery. This is not a running history of native enslavement in the Western Hemisphere, that
would require numerous volumes; this is a breadth approach outlining a missing piece of North
American history, adding to the limited number of works on Native American slavery. He is
attempting to demonstrate that Native Americans made up a significant portion of slaves, but beyond
the numerical value of enslavement, it irrevocably altered the course of Native history. ... Show more

He demonstrates that Native American populations experienced a catastrophic decline from slavery, as
high as 90%, while the height of West Africa s was 20%. Yet the term slavery refers to Africans in the
Americas, as historical memory excludes Native enslavement. The structure is geographic, set in areas
which experienced intense other slavery: Caribbean, Mexico, and the American Southwest. It focuses
on moments in history with abundant evidence of slavery or when the traffic of slavery underwent a
significant change. The four traits used to determine native slavery are forcible removal and
relocation, inability to leave the workplace, working under threat, and little to no pay. That is why the
title is important, other references the issue of African slavery and different forms of

Edward Zwick Glory
The courage displayed by the actors in Glory made the historic movie better for me to see. Glory was
made in 1989 when Mathew Broderick, Morgan Freeman, Andre Braugher, Tihni Kennedy, and Dezel
Washington became known actors to American s. The movie was directed by Edward Zwick, and
Zwick accurately portrays the movie in the right frame. He is able to accurately depict the civil war
and use clothes used in that time frame. Zwick also used actors who were engaged into their job and
indicated the time frame with scar marks on Trip. Not only did the actors make the music entertaining,
but the music brought the movie in. The music was able to help the viewer know when a scene was
happy or dramatic. The movie, Glory, is an accurate depiction of the civil war with accuracy, acting,
and music. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the opening scene, people are playing baseball. Baseball, a sport, was invented during the time of
the civil war. I love Zwick putting American s past time in the beginning of the movie. In my view, he
was able to catch the viewer s attention by showing baseball and telling some American s that the
movie was about the Civil War. One of the other things he was accurate about was the clothes. On the
confederate s side (South), the people had dirty clothes and there were some black soldiers. The South
did not have much people fighting in the army, so the people who had to come in were the slaves from
the southern plantations. While the south had dirty clothes, the union (North) had blue suits.
Additionally, the North did not have as many black soldiers because the North had many people in
their army. There were many people in the North because of working conditions and slavery was
prohibited. During the Battle of Antietam, the movie portrays the clothes on the confederate and union

A Crumbling Nation Essay
For those who do not know much about the Soviet Union, or those intrigued by the almighty Union of
Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), the history of the collapse of the Soviet Union is extremely well
documented in Stephen Kotkin s Armageddon Averted: The Soviet Collapse 1970 2000. This
relatively short book provides great insight into the downfall of the Soviet Union, as well as to how it
could potentially have sustained longer than it did by the Soviet elite. A dramatic shift occurred in the
Soviet Union between 1970 and 2000; numerous events and modifications occurred to pave the way
for a long and slow decay, as opposed to a rapid and fervent eruption of a crumble that many may
have expected. Kotkin provides the readers with a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He incorporates various accounts by numerous insiders and senior dignitaries, along with notable
failures by political figures, to elucidate the factors that led to the failure of both Communism and the
Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.
Kotkin commences by discussing the Arab Israeli War of 1973, as it is a major turning point for the
beginning of the collapse of the Soviet Union. During this time, the Arabs and the Israelis went to war;
because of this, an oil embargo was put forth and prices skyrocketed. Many countries and nations
around the world were struggling to make do on little to no oil, including the two world superpowers.
Tough times were had by all during this time during the Brezhnev era; many resorted to working in
and with the black market in order to make ends meet. As thousands were losing jobs and sinking
more and more into financial woes, the Soviets struck oil in Siberia. A quick shift took place, putting
the Soviet Union as the main oil exporter. The strike of oil led to an abundance of wealth from their

Dred Scott V. Sandford was a lawsuit filed in 1846 by Dred Scott, an African American slave because
he wanted to gain freedom not only for himself but for his family. This case became a landmark legal
case in the United States history. Dred Scott was basically arguing that because his owner had taken
him into a free state where African Americans were free. The United states Supreme court said that
since he was a slave now he could not become free. Slaves were not considered as United States
citizens and since he was a slave he could not sue in federal court. The decision started a lot anger in
Americans and this pushed the country towards civil war. Dred Scott V. Sandford was a very unfair,
racial court case. On March 6, 1875 people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

brutal heat. They had no freedom at all. Slaves were usually whipped and beaten on a daily basis.

they did they had to risk getting separated and their families getting taken away. Many slaves had very
many talents, such as dancing, singing and making instruments. Some slaves were also super religious
and even still had their african rituals. Slaves were referred to as Other Persons and not even a human.
Although no one knows his birthdate for sure, he was most likely born between 1795 and 1800 s in
Southampton County, Virginia. Records show that Dred Scott was also born a slave. Sickness in Dred
Scott s youth may have slowed down his growth. Scott may have not even been in the same places as
his own family. Scott had about eleven siblings, all from the same mother and father. Scott also moved
around a bunch. He got sold to a different plantation which was John Emerson.

Coming in fourth place in behavioral science, a junior from Mamaroneck High School, Willie Quinn!
Instantly, my heart rate doubled and I could feel a rush of adrenaline throughout my body as I leaped
out of my seat. I had never thought in a billion years that I would be called up and given an award for
the presentation of my research, especially as a junior. I was really just proud of myself for entering.
As I walked up to the multi level stage in front of more than 600 people, I experienced a mix of
emotions ranging from surprise to pride to even a slight nervousness due to the enormous crowd of
parents, teachers, judges, and scientists in front of me. When I reached the top, I took a glance down at

disorder due to how detrimental it has been to me; I didn t want selective mutism to disrupt other

to present my research to five new judges throughout the day and stand on a stage in front of hundreds
of people. This moment on the stage was the culmination of years of hard work, persistence, and self
realization.
When I climbed back down from the stage to my seat after the other award recipients in my category
were called up, my friend, Andrew, and my research teacher congratulated me. Since my category was
the first one to get called upon, I had about an hour to reflect on my experience. While my peers got
called up to receive their awards, I had a huge realization: I enjoy being valued and leaving a positive
impact on the world.
Life on earth is finite. What you make of your time here and the impact that you have on others in the
future is what defines the life that you had lived.
The $25 check and the cheap medal that I had received from the competition signifies nothing to me

experience has brought me that I value the most and what I will remember for the rest of my life.

Native American Colonialism
From the time during North American colonialism to the modern era, American Indians have
responded to and countered U.S. policies, philosophies, and agreements in hopes of sustaining and
preserving their sovereignty and relationships to the land. As a result, the U.S. government employed
many different approaches in dealing with American Indians in hopes of assimilation and
diminishment of Native American culture from the mid 19th century to early 20th century.
Consequently, as the U.S. government policies of assimilation directed towards American Indians
evolved from 1850 to 1930, so did the Indian response. Native American responses to early aggressive
U.S. polices, as in the violations of the Treaty of Fort Laramie and the Confederate Home Guard,
resulted in violent resistive responses from American Indians for the ossification of their relationship
to land. As U.S. detribalization policies later shifted to a more diplomatic approach for improved
westernized assimilation, like the Dawes Allotment Act and use of boarding schools, American Indian
s response metamorphosed from resistance to adaptation for the preservation and survival of their
native identities and culture. The intrinsic relationships that American Indians had to their lands was a
non negotiable doctrine for many tribes. Violating these terms proved to promote resistive responses
that frequently involved violence and war. In addition, many early U.S. policies in the 1850 s
commonly disregarded sovereign

Career Style Of Pitching Style
In pitching, you have two major styles; windmill and slingshot. Both styles have good attributes to
them. They both use the same concepts such as leap and drag (Werner, 88) the main difference is in
the slingshot method your arm doesn t go all the way around like in the windmill method. Although
both ways are effective pitching styles, the windmill method has been shown in multiple studies to be
the more effective way (Tocco, 105). Even though the windmill is the more efficient form, there are
some people who are better at the slingshot and just prefer that style over the other.
The slingshot pitching style is the older of the two pitching methods, but this technique has been
basically shut out by the newer windmill style. The slingshot was the first major style of pitching used
for softball. This technique does not use a lot of arm movement and depends more on your legs and
lower body. This pitching style is more focused on drag and leg power (Leland) so for this style your
legs must be the most powerful thing. Your arm movement is just straight back and then you sling
your arm forward to make the ball fly. You have to use a lot of force behind the ball because you are
not using as much arm power, so you have to make up the power with your legs. With the slingshot,
you can not throw as many spin pitches (Leland), but this method does throw off the batter because
the style is so different. The batters are not used to the ball being released so quickly, so their reaction

Leadership Approach Paper – Behavioral Approach
Leadership Approach Paper
Organizations depend on the management and leadership skills of individuals in order to be
successful. Leaders do not have to be managers but are equally important. Leaders are individuals who
possess traits, behavior and abilities to influence others to accomplish tasks and other needed
objectives for the company. Leadership is defined as the ability of an individual to influence, motivate,
and enable others to contribute toward the effectiveness and success of the organization. . . . (House et
al., 1999, pg. 184).
According to Yuki, G. (2010) there are five different leadership approaches that are being researched.
These five approaches are:
1. Trait approach
2. Behavior approach
3. Power influence ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is a not an easy task to change behavior, especially if a person is not interested in change. This is
approach seems to best fit my personal leadership approach. Looking back at my previous
employment as a financial associate at Boone County National Bank, I can relate to the definition of
the behavioral approach. I was always concerned about given tasks and people. My behavior
influenced others to follow and start behaving the same way I did. A great example is the way I used
to deal with my customers. I was friendly, concerned with their business and ensured that they were
well taken care of. By being concerned and open minded, I completed sales and other branch needed
tasks without pushing or forcing myself on someone. With a combination of traits and behavior me
and my colleagues made a great team and were able to complete all tasks on time, efficiently and
effectively as well as satisfy all of our customers and managers. Looking back over the
accomplishments of the branch I worked in as well as my personal accomplishments, I feel proud of
what I have helped accomplish.
Conclusion
Understanding the difference between effective management and effective leadership is important.
Leaders are not always born leaders; they can be formed into leaders if that is what they want. All five
leadership approaches combined would form the perfect leader but each individual has special traits
and behaviors that can make one into a leader. The behavioral

Contingency Planning
The worldwide outage caused by the electromagnetic pulse due to the solar storm would affect most of
the operations that take place globally (Davis, 2003). Since internationalization entails
interdependence with other countries, it implies that the world will be at a standstill. The economic
processes, social and political activities will stagnate. However, suppose the world becomes aware of
the catastrophe, governments and different social institutions in various countries would employ some
contingencies that will enable them to continue thriving. Various changes will occur in the social life,
and most of them would be inclined to the downside. For instance, the health sector will be at mess
because most hospitals use power in the modern world, leading to the decline in the health services.
The education sector is also not an exception. The digitalization of learning systems in the civilized
society made learning easier. Since the systems use power, education will also be altered. Thus, the
outage will paralyze the learning activities globally. Davis (2003) argues that the worldwide shortage
of power will also cause unemployment to people who work in power driven companies. Since they
operate and rely on electricity and digitalized communication systems, their production processes will
stop, leading to their closure, and cause people to who used to work there lose their jobs.

Essay about Vision, Mission, and Strategy at Starbucks
Starbucks was bought out by current CEO Howard Schultz in 1987. Since then, Andrew Harrer (2012)
reports the company has grown to operate over 17,244 stores worldwide (para. 1). Fortune (n.d.)
reports in its yearly 100 Best Companies to Work for that Starbucks employs some 95,000 employees .
From only a handful of stores in 1987 to a billion dollar franchise today, the success of Starbucks is
due in great deal to their corporate culture, specifically how employees, or as Starbucks calls them,
partners are treated. Joseph Michelli (2007) echoes this sentiment, A great cup of coffee is only part of

Starbucks corporation feels that the Starbucks Experience starts with their employees. If their
employees are happy, their employees create better experiences for their customers. This creative
approach to the management of people shows. Michelli (2007) highlights that the turnover rate at
Starbucks is much lower than at other similar establishments, 120 percent less than the industry
average (p. 282). He further goes on to mention that employees have an 82% job satisfaction rate (p.
282). This deep desire to treat employees fairly stems from Schultz s ideals. He himself mentions, As
a business leader, my quest has never been just about winning or making money; it has also been
about building a great, enduring company, which has always meant trying to strike a balance between
profit and social conscience (Schultz, p. 107). Many believe his deep sense of empathy stems from his
early childhood where his father was ill and could not hold a job. This is reflected today in his
treatment of his employees. All

Symbolism In Wonder Woman
Armed with her bulletproof bracelets and magic lasso, Wonder Woman is a popular icon of female
strength in a universe of male superheroes. Going through her history however, shows that she depicts
a complicated heroine who is more than just a female comic book character. Wonder Woman was
created by William Moulton Marston, who was a psychologist and a lawyer, and believed that women
s capacity for love, nurture, and self sacrifice would make them better leaders than men. He created
Wonder Woman in order to gain his vision of female empowerment. While the character s feminism is

Nevertheless, Wonder Woman s costume has got multiple meanings and symbolisms. In the 70s,
women activists had protested against the oppressive nature of sexist beauty and fashion standards.
Wonder Woman s bathing suit symbolized the objectification of women for male viewers at the Miss

both comic books and the TV series. It has been referred by Wonder Woman as the garb of justice .
(Ball, 2016) While the outside world judges her for the way she dresses, Diana is surprised at their
reaction and has commented on it, both in the comics and in the animated series Justice League . She
promoted the feminist argument that women s modesty should not be reduced to standards of dress.
The Amazons did not see a need to cover a woman s body completely in order for them to be

Conflict naturally occurs in the health care environment. Conflict, in the right quality and quantity, can
produce growth. Conflict in large amounts, or if managed poorly can negatively impact motivation

environment, because a breakdown in communication and collaborations can lead to patient care

address the issue. Getting both sides to recognize and work toward a common goal is important.
Although there are times when this approach may not work due to time constraints or other reasons.
My nurse manager also used the strategy of third party consultation. Marquis and Huston (2015)
suggest confrontation, third party consultation, behavior change, responsibility charting, structure
change, and soothing one party as strategies to manage conflict. This was an effective strategy to use
to assure her and the staff nurses that the conflict was being handled appropriately. This would be a

Conflict Management Relates the Effective Leader The effective leader needs to recognize conflict
early, be proactive, actively listen, remain calm, define the problem, and seek a solution (Johansen,
2012). The conflict I described took several weeks to come to a final solution. The nurse manager
handled the situation fairly, however the time it took to resolve the conflict allowed for breakdown in
the team morale. Unresolved conflict can lead to poor communication and affect patient outcomes

  • 2. Birmingham Jail Functional Theory Martin Luther King Jr. s Letter from a Birmingham Jail (1965) is important from both historical and sociological points of view. It is an example of self sacrifice as in idea for the of equality of all people. Formally, King addresses this letter that he wrote while in Birmingham jail at the clergymen who opposed his protests. In fact, he applies it to everyone who approves of racism, and considers the methods of nonviolent struggle to be too radical and far fetched from achieving an actual goal. From a sociological point of view, the Letter from a Birmingham Jail shows the way of nonviolent adjustment of the social conflict and stages of this way: collection of the facts to determine whether injustices exist negotiation; ... Families of color were forced to bring up their children in a humiliating and insulting atmosphere. The state and authorities, as one of social factors, supported the racism. Promises to restore justice and equalize the rights of white and colored residents do not mean anything. Church leadership prefers to stay aside the civil problems. Martin Luther King Jr. s Letter from a Birmingham Jail clearly shows that the church acts in a cowardly manner concerning the issue of racism, supporting the state law, but not the moral one, which claims that all men are brothers. The elements of society do not function in harmony. As a result, the social conflict arises affecting the outlook and symbolic perception of people. Modern society supports King s ideas and considers him to be a national hero. However, he often found misunderstanding among his contemporaries: King s nonviolence played into the hands of segregationists (Mott 411). Peace and brotherhood cannot be achieved through aggression, so King chose the strategy of nonviolent direct action. A sense of injustice, sympathy to his friends, family and even strangers encouraged King to start nonviolent direct action. The importance was that King fought not only for the rights of people of color, but also for the rights of all the exploited people. It shows his understanding and love for ... • 4. Por Una Cabeza Analysis Por una cabeza by Carlos Gardel is an iconic and genre defining piece of music. It is the most famous piece of tango music and is a gateway to the world of tango. The summer before my junior year I took a trip to Argentina to visit family. We visited Caminito, the birthplace of tango, and I became fascinated by the dance and the music. I decided that I wanted to choreograph a tango for my dance ensemble back in DC. While I thought that this was going to be simple it was quite the opposite. Tango music is usually quite simple, yet it is often juxtaposed by the intricate moves of the dancers. Every movement has a specific meaning and intonation. If the move is slightly off, then it changes the meaning of the whole phrase. Each move combines ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Ken Levine himself said that Bioshock Infinite was marketed to appeal to frat boys. And Naughty Dog has revealed they didn t want to see what women thought of The Last of Us and that they were trying to appeal exclusively to males. While the director of Remember me has said the female protagonist has been killed off by publishers because men allegedly don t want to play as a girly girl . But even the best playable female characters are going to be inoffensively beautiful in some way shape or form. Lara Croft was a powerful and intelligent woman, but she was overly sexualised in the older games. In the latest Tomb Raider game she is attractive, realistically proportioned, properly clothed and is more human like which makes her an acceptable sexualisation because she s not objectified. • 9. The Pursuit Of Happiness By Aristotle The pursuit of happiness is the reason for our existence (Aristotle, 2004) The Greek word that usually gets translated as happiness is eudaimonia, and like most translations from ancient languages, there is a loss of deeper meaning in translation. According to Aristotle happiness (eudaimonia) is the central purpose of human life and a goal in itself (Aristotle, 2004) (Creed, Wardman 1963). Because of this ideology, Aristotle devoted much of his time discussing and explaining this philosophy (Hughes, 2001). Even though he lived on the other side of the world as Mencius, they both came to similar conclusions about happiness it is the cultivation of virtue (Creed, Wardman 1963). These virtues when studied are more individualistic when compared to Confucian or Buddhist ideology. To Aristotle happiness was not just the not just a result of one facet of life but all facets mental, spiritual, physical and social (Hardie, 1980). Most of these attitudes and behaviours may originate from self induced, emotional or inner feelings which may include frustration and emotional instability. These attitudes or behaviours may lead to absenteeism and destructive behaviour among individuals in an organization (Hughes, 2001). Poor attitudes and behaviours which result from intrapersonal conflict usually decrease the performance and efficiency of an organization. On the other hand when it is managed in the right manner it helps individuals promote capacity to adapt and attain a balance in the working relations with the organization. Cognitive strategies, often referred to as defence mechanisms, help an individual to falsify, distort or deny a particular conflict. Cognitive strategies represent an attempt to control or manage negative and disturbing feelings associated with conflict and to allow an individual to carry on with his normal activities. Judges across the nation have written tomes about whether a cellphone is akin to a container like a suitcase stuffed with marijuana that the police might find in the trunk of a car or whether, as the judge in the Rhode Island murder case suggested, it is more comparable to a face to face conversation. Relationship Between Consumer Sentiment And Adr Price Essay These studies discussed above implicitly assume that the local and US investors have homogeneous expectations about future prospects of all markets. However, in practice, different market conditions can cause investors to generate differential risk perceptions. Some studies argue that investor sentiment may augment to the price divergence between ADRs and their underlying stocks.  Heterogeneous Investor Sentiment Grossmann et al. (2007) perhaps is the first to investigate the relationship between consumer sentiment and ADR price differences. Using a fixed effects panel data approach, they provide evidence in support of the hypothesis that costly arbitrage factors influence ADR price differentials. 30 Moreover, they argue that sentiment could also help explain the mispricing of ADRs. Specifically, they test whether consumer sentiment (measured by consumer sentiment indices) help to explain the divergence between the prices of ADRs and that of their underlying assets. Their results suggest that the more optimistic U.S. consumers are the lower the ADR premiums. Based on the findings, they conclude that the prices of ADRs and that of the underlying stocks are more responsive to US consumer sentiment as to the consumer sentiment of the country of origin. Using a cross sectional panel data approach, Arquette et al. Many people call this portion visible light, and know that visible light has a range of many colors. These main colors are usually said to be red, orange, blue, indigo, violet, yellow, and green. The colors of different objects are determined by the interaction between light and the electrons of the atoms that make up an object. The object is made up of specific wavelengths of white light unique to the object, and it absorbs the light according to its wavelengths. Molecules have many states, two of these states, are states where the electron is excited and neutral when it is originally found. These theories tried to describe light as a ray which moved directionally to a point. Native American Colonialism From the time during North American colonialism to the modern era, American Indians have responded to and countered U.S. policies, philosophies, and agreements in hopes of sustaining and preserving their sovereignty and relationships to the land. As a result, the U.S. government employed many different approaches in dealing with American Indians in hopes of assimilation and diminishment of Native American culture from the mid 19th century to early 20th century. Consequently, as the U.S. government policies of assimilation directed towards American Indians evolved from 1850 to 1930, so did the Indian response. Native American responses to early aggressive U.S. polices, as in the violations of the Treaty of Fort Laramie and the Confederate Home Guard, resulted in violent resistive responses from American Indians for the ossification of their relationship to land. As U.S. detribalization policies later shifted to a more diplomatic approach for improved westernized assimilation, like the Dawes Allotment Act and use of boarding schools, American Indian s response metamorphosed from resistance to adaptation for the preservation and survival of their native identities and culture. Although both ways are effective pitching styles, the windmill method has been shown in multiple studies to be the more effective way (Tocco, 105). Even though the windmill is the more efficient form, there are some people who are better at the slingshot and just prefer that style over the other. The slingshot pitching style is the older of the two pitching methods, but this technique has been basically shut out by the newer windmill style. The slingshot was the first major style of pitching used for softball. This technique does not use a lot of arm movement and depends more on your legs and lower body. This pitching style is more focused on drag and leg power (Leland) so for this style your legs must be the most powerful thing. Your arm movement is just straight back and then you sling your arm forward to make the ball fly. You have to use a lot of force behind the ball because you are not using as much arm power, so you have to make up the power with your legs. Bravery is having mental strength in a time of difficulty or danger, Charlie shows this on many occasions through the novel. Firstly Charlie shows bravery when he steals Bertha, a white foxhound from the Colonel s kennel. I stole her. I ran off with her after dark, through the trees so no one would see us revealed Charlie to Tommo. This act of selflessness takes great bravery especially because Charlie knew the punishment he would receive. • 31. Leadership Approach Paper – Behavioral Approach Leadership Approach Paper Organizations depend on the management and leadership skills of individuals in order to be successful. Leaders do not have to be managers but are equally important. Leaders are individuals who possess traits, behavior and abilities to influence others to accomplish tasks and other needed objectives for the company. Leadership is defined as the ability of an individual to influence, motivate, and enable others to contribute toward the effectiveness and success of the organization. . . . (House et al., 1999, pg. 184). According to Yuki, G. (2010) there are five different leadership approaches that are being researched. These five approaches are: 1. Trait approach 2. Behavior approach 3. Power influence ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is a not an easy task to change behavior, especially if a person is not interested in change. This is approach seems to best fit my personal leadership approach. Looking back at my previous employment as a financial associate at Boone County National Bank, I can relate to the definition of the behavioral approach. I was always concerned about given tasks and people. My behavior influenced others to follow and start behaving the same way I did. A great example is the way I used to deal with my customers. I was friendly, concerned with their business and ensured that they were well taken care of. By being concerned and open minded, I completed sales and other branch needed tasks without pushing or forcing myself on someone. With a combination of traits and behavior me and my colleagues made a great team and were able to complete all tasks on time, efficiently and effectively as well as satisfy all of our customers and managers. Looking back over the accomplishments of the branch I worked in as well as my personal accomplishments, I feel proud of what I have helped accomplish. Conclusion Understanding the difference between effective management and effective leadership is important. Leaders are not always born leaders; they can be formed into leaders if that is what they want. All five leadership approaches combined would form the perfect leader but each individual has special traits and behaviors that can make one into a leader. The behavioral ... • 32. Contingency Planning And Its Effects On The Environment Koslo Ford Contingency Planning 4 17 16 Contingency Planning The worldwide outage caused by the electromagnetic pulse due to the solar storm would affect most of the operations that take place globally (Davis, 2003). Since internationalization entails interdependence with other countries, it implies that the world will be at a standstill. The economic processes, social and political activities will stagnate. However, suppose the world becomes aware of the catastrophe, governments and different social institutions in various countries would employ some contingencies that will enable them to continue thriving. Various changes will occur in the social life, and most of them would be inclined to the downside. For instance, the health sector will be at mess because most hospitals use power in the modern world, leading to the decline in the health services. The education sector is also not an exception. The digitalization of learning systems in the civilized society made learning easier. Since the systems use power, education will also be altered. Thus, the outage will paralyze the learning activities globally. Davis (2003) argues that the worldwide shortage of power will also cause unemployment to people who work in power driven companies. Since they operate and rely on electricity and digitalized communication systems, their production processes will stop, leading to their closure, and cause people to who used to work there lose their jobs. The deficiency in communication ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. A Simple Phone Call One Night After Dinner It all began with a simple phone call one night after dinner. Joe, my father hollered up the stairs, it s for you. Its jackie, and she sounds upset. as I came downstairs to pick up the phone, I was not happy. I was tired and had looked forward to a nice quiet evening at home, not another stupid adventure with Jackie. Thirty minutes later, however, Jackie s silver Mustang convertible swung into our driveway, and Jackie was leaning on the horn before the car came to a full stop. Grabbing my coat from the couch, I walked out my front door with all the enthusiasm of a man going to stand before a firing squad. Look at the window, do you see that? jackie asserted while keeping a safe distance from the house. What is that? I questioned as I squinted to see the window. Then my eyes caught it, the one window on the entire house contained a circle with an A through it, Anarchy. It s probably nothing I assured Jackie. I was giving Jackie false hope. In the early 60 s and 70 s this town had applied a government of Anarchy. The two who began this apocalyptic cult, were Jackies parents. During that time the government fell apart as Jackies parents implemented this form of society. There was so little government and law restriction that all crime became considered legal. Eventually the Army intervened and broke up the chaos. Jackies parents disappeared and were never heard of again. Lets go, we don t have to be here i offered. No, lets go in Jackie exclaimed blatantly. Jackie, what if there s someone in there? as Jackie picked up a small rock. Well, time to find out. as Jackie threw the rock and smashed the window. • 35. Essay about Vision, Mission, and Strategy at Starbucks Starbucks was bought out by current CEO Howard Schultz in 1987. Since then, Andrew Harrer (2012) reports the company has grown to operate over 17,244 stores worldwide (para. 1). Fortune (n.d.) reports in its yearly 100 Best Companies to Work for that Starbucks employs some 95,000 employees . From only a handful of stores in 1987 to a billion dollar franchise today, the success of Starbucks is due in great deal to their corporate culture, specifically how employees, or as Starbucks calls them, partners are treated. Joseph Michelli (2007) echoes this sentiment, A great cup of coffee is only part of the Starbucks success equation (p. 767). Baristas can expose themselves to additional training if they desire to become Coffee Masters, Shift Supervisors, or Store Managers. In fact, Michelli (2007) reports, Starbucks consistently spends more on training than it does on advertising (p. 282). The Starbucks corporation feels that the Starbucks Experience starts with their employees. If their employees are happy, their employees create better experiences for their customers. This creative approach to the management of people shows. Michelli (2007) highlights that the turnover rate at Starbucks is much lower than at other similar establishments, 120 percent less than the industry average (p. 282). He further goes on to mention that employees have an 82% job satisfaction rate (p. 282). This deep desire to treat employees fairly stems from Schultz s ideals. He himself mentions, As a business leader, my quest has never been just about winning or making money; it has also been about building a great, enduring company, which has always meant trying to strike a balance between profit and social conscience (Schultz, p. 107). Many believe his deep sense of empathy stems from his early childhood where his father was ill and could not hold a job. This is reflected today in his treatment of his employees. All ... • 36. Symbolism In Wonder Woman Armed with her bulletproof bracelets and magic lasso, Wonder Woman is a popular icon of female strength in a universe of male superheroes. Going through her history however, shows that she depicts a complicated heroine who is more than just a female comic book character. Wonder Woman was created by William Moulton Marston, who was a psychologist and a lawyer, and believed that women s capacity for love, nurture, and self sacrifice would make them better leaders than men. He created Wonder Woman in order to gain his vision of female empowerment. While the character s feminism is unquestionably open to judgement, her creator s desires were clear. Nevertheless, Wonder Woman has grown into an important symbol of the feminist movement and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nevertheless, Wonder Woman s costume has got multiple meanings and symbolisms. In the 70s, women activists had protested against the oppressive nature of sexist beauty and fashion standards. Wonder Woman s bathing suit symbolized the objectification of women for male viewers at the Miss America Pageant. The symbolic contrast between the Pageant and her costume has been apparent in both comic books and the TV series. It has been referred by Wonder Woman as the garb of justice . (Ball, 2016) While the outside world judges her for the way she dresses, Diana is surprised at their reaction and has commented on it, both in the comics and in the animated series Justice League . She promoted the feminist argument that women s modesty should not be reduced to standards of dress. The Amazons did not see a need to cover a woman s body completely in order for them to be respected. To judge a woman by the male defined sense of modesty seemed unreasonable. • 37. Health Care Conflict Conflict naturally occurs in the health care environment. Conflict, in the right quality and quantity, can produce growth. Conflict in large amounts, or if managed poorly can negatively impact motivation and productivity (Marquis and Huston, 2015). Conflict resolution is critical to a healthy work environment, because a breakdown in communication and collaborations can lead to patient care errors (Johansen, 2012). Conflict I had a conflict with a peer over scheduling. We were both weekend package, working 24 hour shifts. We shared the weekend hours equally by alternating the days we worked. This peer announced at a staff meeting that she wanted to strictly work every Sunday and have me work every Saturday. She said that since she had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a nurse manager, if this problem were presented to me today, I would try to use collaboration to address the issue. Getting both sides to recognize and work toward a common goal is important. Although there are times when this approach may not work due to time constraints or other reasons. My nurse manager also used the strategy of third party consultation. Marquis and Huston (2015) suggest confrontation, third party consultation, behavior change, responsibility charting, structure change, and soothing one party as strategies to manage conflict. This was an effective strategy to use to assure her and the staff nurses that the conflict was being handled appropriately. This would be a good technique for me to utilize, as it would give me reassurance of doing the right thing. How Conflict Management Relates the Effective Leader The effective leader needs to recognize conflict early, be proactive, actively listen, remain calm, define the problem, and seek a solution (Johansen, 2012). The conflict I described took several weeks to come to a final solution. The nurse manager handled the situation fairly, however the time it took to resolve the conflict allowed for breakdown in the team morale. Unresolved conflict can lead to poor communication and affect patient outcomes (Marquis Huston, 2015). Summary ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
