apotheosis (Schwarz 698). Personally, I found this analysis on par with the
conceptualization of this character. Kurtz is an enigmatic figure whose presence is
felt intensely by nearly every character within Joseph Conrads Heart of Darkness. He
is a bold and brash exemplar of uncontained human ego. His desires are manifested in
his stead fast attempt to create himself which makes it all the more intriguing that the
protagonist, Marlow, arrives at the climax of his self formation. Therefore, I assert
that Kurtz represents the very Heart of Darkness within humankind, an unyielding,
terrible, and awesome free spirit, whose impacts reverberate through all he comes in
contact with. Marlow first hears of Mr. Kurtz from the Company s chief accountant.
It s important to point out that this interaction with the chief accountant also
represents Marlow s first return to civilization after traversing the African continent
for the first time. Therefore, Marlow refers to the accountant as a miracle, because
of what his unique distinction from all that Marlow has seen thus far (Conrad 74).

will investigate a case of gender discrimination against Bank of America and what
could have been done to prevent this from happening.
Calibuso et al. v. Bank of America Corp. et al.
In 2010, a group of female financial advisors filed a national class action lawsuit
against Bank of America and Merrill Lynch under gender discrimination. The main
plaintiff, Judy Calibuso, worked in the Miami, Florida office since 1995 (Lieff
Cabraser Heiman Bernstein, 2010). In the lawsuit, Bank of America is accused of
favoring male brokers in merit pay, allocating client accounts and referrals,
partnership opportunities, and benefits. The plaintiffs had hoped to end the
discriminatory practices and policies and be awarded back pay from retaliatory
efforts (Lieff Cabraser Heiman Bernstein, 2010). After three years, they finally came
to a settlement awarding $39 million to a possible 4,800 current and former
employees (Stempel, 2013). The settlement also provided that Bank of America
