Jeffrey Baker Hair Case Study
The Curious Case of Jeffrey Baker s Hair The more intently Jess stared at the back of Jeffrey Baker s
head, the more it started to resemble this particularly gruesome hairball Blue Bell, her cat, had
coughed up last spring. Blue Bell had gotten into the neighbour s garbage can and feasted on a mixture
of discarded floss, rotten fruit, and their dead pet mouse. The resulting hairball was the most revolting
thing Jess had ever seen, and she had to plug her nose as she cleaned up the mess. Blue Bell didn t
look too great after retching it up either. Jeffrey s hair was a ragged brown mess that clung to his head
like the hair in a shower drain, with just as much zeal. Jess wondered mildly if he owned a comb, or if
she should offer the one she carried in her purse. Still, she wondered what it would be like to have that
icky mop on her own head: What would it feel like? Would it have a ... Show more content on

Jeffrey reclined in his chair, and his hair practically brushed her desk. He wouldn t notice. Gently, she
pinched a lock between her thumb and forefinger. Jessica. What are you doing? Mrs. Perty droned
with dull disapproval. She stood with one hand on her hip, the other holding a book open. Jess froze
immediately, as Jeffrey spun around. His hair slipped from her hand, and his face was a mix of
confusion and anger. Yeah, what the heck, Jess? Jeffrey demanded, his features muted into the deep
red his face was turning. Looking around, Jess realized everyone in the classroom had their heads
turned in her direction. She smiled grimly and tried her best to look innocent though this act was not
for her sake, but for poor Jeffrey Baker s. She didn t want anyone else to contemplate the mystery that
was his hair it might embarrass him so she lied. I was, uh . . . I was going to tap you on the shoulder to
ask you a question, but you turned around before I could. Jess looked at Mrs. Perty s expression.

The Industrialization of the Northern United States Essays
A Connecticut minister, Horace Bushnell, once said that the industrialization of the United States
north produced a complete revolution in Americans life and manners. The complete revolution that
Bushnell speaks of was an era of industrialization triggered by a population growth, an increase in
literacy rates, and the development of labor saving technologies in the northern region of the United
States. This dramatic economic and social transformation instigated a series of outcomes, both
positive and negative, for the United States during the early to mid nineteenth century. Many aspects
of life for United States citizens were changing, such as the growing population in the north. In
addition, women and people of color were finding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Factories enabled a large number of people to be supervised together and replaced hand tools with
power driven machinery. The availability of factory jobs in the north caused a great influx of workers
to the region during this era. One group of people, immigrants, particularly met the demand for labor
in the north. Between 1840 and 1860, over 4 million people entered the United States. About 90
percent of these immigrants headed for the northern states where job opportunities were abundant. The
new advancements in railroads and steamboats, the increase in commercial farming, and the
development of large factories triggered the relocation of multitudes to northern cities. Each one
building upon another, the events that took place in the north during the 1800s instigated an extreme
growth of cities and urban societies, proving population growth to be a key effect of the
industrialization in the United States north. With the center of production moving from households to
mass production, women in America had to alter their way of life. A great number of women followed
labor opportunities to the mills, factories, and workshops. For the first time in history, large numbers
of women left their homes to participate in the public world. Mill Girls were typically young,
unmarried women who lived together in boarding houses provided by the factory for which they
worked. Lucy Larcom recalls,

Divine Dichotomy-Jesus Christ And The Holy Ghost Writer
Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost Writer Faithful followers of our congregation, long have I spoken of
the danger of complacentcy, of sin, of appetence, of divine status, the list goes on. However, it is my
duty, as shepherd of our flock, to warn you of the severity of matters of artistic endeavor. For God not
only oversees your interaction of the world around you, but how you interpret this interaction into
music. Music is a pathway to the soul. Shouldn t it be paved in love for our lord and savior? It saddens
me to say that most don t share this fundamental wisdom. There are those who cast out all morality in
the musical process, by hiring professional lyricists to write their music for them. We all know the

Client Goal
Research reveals that self esteem is the most consistent predictor of the likelihood and extent of
substance abuse (Uba et al., 2013). The client is a 15 year old female who was court ordered to
Inspirations for Youth and Families treatment center. Client was arrested for shop lifting but was also
charged with the possession of Heroin. For the past couple weeks, the client presented with low self
esteem of self that may have played a role in her poor choice in substance abuse. On top of Detox and
group therapy, the client will receive Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in hopes to improve self esteem to
alter the substance abuse behavior.
Single Subject Evaluation
The author used an ABAB design with the client. The ABAB design represents an effort to measure a
baseline, a treatment measurement, the withdrawal of treatment, and the re introduction of treatment.
The author chose the design because it involves two parts including gathering of baseline information,
the application of a treatment and measurement of the effects of the treatment; and of what happens
when the treatment is removed and then again applying the treatment and measuring the change. With
the amount of time allowed, the ABAB design worked best.
Measurement Tool The Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale (RSS) was used to measure the clients level of
self esteem. The RSS is a 10 item scale that measures self worth by evaluating both positive and
negative feelings about the self. The scale is believed to be one

Mesopotamia Cuneiform
Writing is the physical manifestation of a spoken language. Between 50,000 and 30,000, evidence of
language appeared with cave paintings. However, it wasn t until 3500 BCE when Sumerian people of
Mesopotamia started writing called cuneiform. This writing used specific marks in wet clay with a
reed implement. These scripts were based on pictorial symbols and later mixed with phonetic
elements.
The Sumerians were a commercial people and writing was developed to record quantities of goods.
Clay tokens of a distinctive shape and size were used to represent quantities of commodities such as
grain, livestock, labor, and land. Each token represented both a quantity and type of commodity.
Alphabetic writing began with scripts by the Semitic people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The Greek phonetic writing system came from Phoenicia and was quite different from that of
Mesopotamia, yet it still owes its development to the Sumerians and their advances in the written
word. With the rise of the cities in Mesopotamia, and the need for resources which were lacking in the
region, long distance trade developed and, with it, the need to be able to communicate across the
expanses between cities or regions. In order to express more complex terms, Phonograms were
created. These phonograms were symbols that represented sounds which gave more meaning. With
this, they had a dynamic means of conveying motion to and from a location. By the Third Millennium
B.C, cuneiform was used for a vast array of economic, religious, political, literary, and scholarly
documents.
One of the first writers known by name was priestess Enheduanna who wrote her hymns to the
goddess Inanna and signed them with her name. Literature is at first words rather than letters. It arises
as clerical chants or magic charms, usually recited by the priests. Carmina, Romans poetry, meant both
verses and charms; ode meant a magic spell to the Greeks. Some were developed to preserve, transmit,
and enhance the magic incantations of their

The Importance Of Detection Of Breast Cancer Cells
Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer related death in women and it is estimated that in
2017, 5000 women will die of this disease in Canada2. The main reason for death is due to metastases
in other organs and circulating tumour cells (CTCs) may be the main cause of metastatic lesions1.
CTCs detach from the primary tumour and travel through blood or lymphatic vessels to form a
secondary tumour1. The purpose of the 2016 preliminary study was to determine if CTCs can be
detected in the blood of adjuvant breast cancer patients using real time quantitative polymerase chain
reaction (RT qPCR) to measure gene expression values of cytokeratin (CK) 8, 18, and 191. The
rationale for detection of CTCs via RT qPCR is based on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The authors did not find a correlation between tumour data such as tumour size or tumour receptor
type and relative gene expression.
Was qPCR The Right Method for This Study?
Currently, the only FDA approved method for enumeration of CTCs is the CellSearch System which
was introduced in 20047. This technique works by enriching cells from the peripheral blood sample
using a magnetic ferrofluid containing antibodies against epithelial adhesion molecule7. The cells are
then stained for expression of CK and detection is based on morphology, size and fluorescence;
therefore, CTCs expressing these epithelial markers can be quantified7. Previous research has
demonstrated that the CellSearch System may have a low yield of CTC capture which is a major
concern for its clinical value7. qPCR method had an increased sensitivity of detecting CTCs and
several studies have shown that it gives more positive results compared to the CellSearch System10,
11, 13. Before accepting qPCR as the new gold standard method based on its enhanced sensitivity, its
limitations for clinical use should be considered. First, the presence of tumour cells in blood samples
could not be quantified and therefore the levels of gene expression cannot be correlated with the
number of CTCs in a blood sample1. Although the authors suggest generating standard curves by
combining qPCR with the CellSearch System, ultimately this would seem to be redundant in that it is
reintroducing a method with

Clinical Rotation Analysis
I am writing to express myself concerning the clinical issues I had since the beginning of my clinical
rotation this term. I would say this issue is a continuation of the incidence that transpired during my
NUR 319 rotation in which I had written to express my concern in an email addressed to Prof.
Loving/Chiarantona dated 03/12/16. (Please see my email of 03/12/16 as forwarded to you). I did also
request to be sent to a different clinical site to complete my NUR 319 rotation
On 01/26/17 being the first day of clinical (orientation), I was provided a written warning for being
late, and I made sure that doesn t occur again.

wouldn t expect to rotate twice in the same hospital, when I can gain a different experience in another
location and considering the clinical issues I had last year with Prof. Rota.
I have worked so hard to be where I am right now, actually, I have put in three times more effort than
my class mates, to be where I am right now in my academic. During my community rotation at
Artman Nursing home, I administer medication to about six patients in a day, without any error. I have
also administered meds and perform many procedures without being looked at by my clinical
instructors as not knowing what I am doing.
At this point I know that I am confident, I can critically think and independently plan, organize and
provide quality care to my patient. I have made a tremendous improvement on medication knowledge,
application and administration and these competencies will be demonstrated in my clinical rotation at
Holy redeemer. I have also put studying materials and practices that will help me recall and
comprehend what I had learn so far to help me finish strong in this course that I have journeyed so

Stereotypes In Grey s Anatomy
I only viewed two stereotypes in the shows I watched. The first stereotype is that In Grey s Anatomy
they made women seem hysterical and clueless when it came to a pregnancy. They also made the dads
seem useless because they were hardly in the room. In the show they also made The Doctors look
arrogant and selfish because as if every doctor only believes in experimenting instead of truly helping
a patient. In the commercials there were a lot of stereotypes. The asian aways played the smart guy or
tech savvy guy. The older man always played the wealthy guys or someone who is extremly sick in
health. There was a certain Lexus commercial that stuck with me because its a fast car a man is
driving and when he gets home he finds his wife with a man

Radical activism is defined as taking action to achieve justice. The injustices black people have faced
throughout history stem from the insecurities of white people and their hunger for power. Today, we
have advanced farther than any of our ancestors could have ever imagined and it would not be
possible without the hard work and activism of the black woman first, the black man second, and both
of us as a unit third. Throughout history black women were seen as invisible. They have been viewed
as weak and powerless and their views and opinions have been pushed to the side. This has been a
reoccurring issue over the years and many women from different generations have stepped up to

Evolution of the Brain
In Revenge of the Nerds the author, Steven Pinker, begins by arguing for his claim that there were four
main traits that helped develop primates casual reasoning that eventually led them to evolve into the
humans we are today. These four traits are vision, group living, use of hands, and hunting. Pinker
provides each trait with several reasons and factual evidence, including a chart, on its contributions to
casual reasoning. Later in the article, however, Pinker focuses on his main claim which questions the
timeline for human brain evolution. The first trait that Pinker mentions is vision. He argues that the
reason that vision makes a difference is due to depth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pinker provides evidence that through evolution, upright posture may have evolved under selection
pressures, eventually leading to the reshaping of our bones that allowed use of our hands. Pinker s
reason for this claim is that monkeys and gorillas, with their upright posture, have frequent use for
their hands which leads to his warrant that Precision hands and precision intelligence co evolved in the
human lineage, and the fossil record shows that hands let the way Pinker (194). Pinker believes the
last main contribution was hunting. His main reason for this claim is the nutrients that hunting
provides. Pinker mentions evidence to this statement by stating all of the advantages to eating meat,
including that this pure protein contains amino acids, energy rich fat, and dispensable fatty acids, as
well as stating how the act of hunting requires a lot of skill which helps with brain development. His
warrant for this claim is that hunting was a necessity for our ancestors, as it provided food year round,
as well as contributed to their

water Pure and hygienic water is not only important for our life but also needed for quality
construction. From the foundation till the completion of construction we must ensure the quality of
water used. Here are few tips to know about water.
Water is one of the most important elements in construction but people still ignore quality aspect of
this element. The water is required for preparation of mortar, mixing of cement concrete and for
curing work etc during construction work. The quality and quantity of water has much effect on the
strength of mortar and cement concrete in construction work. Quality of Water
The water used for mixing and curing should be clean and free from injurious quantities of alkalis,
acid, oils, salt, sugar, organic materials, vegetable growth and other substances that may be deleterious
to bricks, stone, concrete or steel. Potable water is generally considered satisfactory for mixing. The
pH value of water should be not less than 6.

It Goes Without Saying That Equality And The Fight For It
It goes without saying that equality and the fight for it is one of the most important issues pressing on
us today. Whether it be from sexual orientation, gender assumption, the rights of the unborn to even
racial segregation and discrimination, the issue is still real and very much at hand. But who is to say
these issues only fall on to the heads of just one species? How is it that homo sapiens are the only
species to have all these discriminatory and demeaning issues thrust upon them? This is the main
premise against the argument of speciesm. It has been an age old problem that some group of people
or beings have been oppressed to an inhumane level. Whether it be slavery, sexism, or now a very
pertinent one in our society today, speciesm, these issues have been around for the ages and still haunt
our society to this day. Throughout this essay I will prove that it is not only illogical and ethically
immoral to follow the beliefs of speciesm but to follow this belief, as Peter Singer argues, would be
just as immoral as to identify oneself as a racist, sexist, or one with discriminatory beliefs.
Firstly, what even is speciesism? As Peter Singer, one of the greatest thinkers and philosophers of this
day and age, states speciesism is an attitude of bias against a being because of the species to which it
belongs. Typically, humans show speciesism when they give less weight to the interests of nonhuman
animals than they give to the similar interests of human beings. He

Who Is John Edgar Hoover s Greatest Accomplishments
Imagine, a time when law enforcement agents could only watch a criminal walk away. A time when
they were unable to return fire in a gunfight. A time when no means for tracking criminals existed. A
time when a state line stood as impassible as a great wall for law enforcement. There was a time, when
men created legends with their criminal exploits, by name of John Dillinger, Machine Gun Kelly,
Baby Face Nelson. They stood unopposed, taking what they wished on a whim. In 1924, a young man,
years short of 30, was put in charge of an agency with no bite. By the end of his life, J. Edgar Hoover

Law enforcements were unable to pursue criminals across state lines. In addition to a total lack of
legal necessities, the manner in which the FBI was run prior to Hoover was ineffective at best, once
being called the most corrupt and incompetent agency in Washington (John Edgar Hoover).
Immediately upon his appointment, Hoover set to work. In fact, Hoover would only take the job under
the conditions that he would hold singular control over the promotion of his agents, and that no
political leverage be used against him to obstruct the agency (John Edgar Hoover). The director
established new personnel policies, firing agents that were considered unqualified but hired anyway
by previous directors, doing away with promotions based upon seniority, only giving promotions
based upon merit, introduced standard performance reviews, and established strict standards of
conducts (John Edgar Hoover). Hoover also reorganized the agency in such a way that every officer
reported directly to him. The agency became part Hoover just as Hoover became part of the agency,
and he did everything that he could to obtain more power for it. Hoover pioneered personnel training,
the use of scientific laboratory techniques, accurate reporting, and filing large volumes of material

Personal Strengths Of Personality Types
Growing up shapes and defines our personalities, our personalities develop the most based on our
experiences as young children. I once had a pre school teacher write about who I was at close to the
age of four, this is what she said, Ivy she presents herself as being very timid and shy, but can be as
rough and tough as any of the boys. She likes to play with the boys and is rumored to have a
boyfriend. She also likes to giggle with the girls and becomes very excited to see her friends and her
brother Evan. She has the sweetest grin and assures her friends that Mommy will be back soon . Even
as a young child my teacher was able to gather my personality accurately and some of those traits
have stayed with me as a growing adult, I believe they define me and make me unique.
In the five minute personality test about animals, it clearly states that I have a similar if not exact
personality as a golden retriever. This particular personality type is very sensitive and caring which
suits myself perfectly. The golden retriever personality type is very accommodating which means we
get along well and can adapt if needed. We are very calm which allows us to evaluate any situation
and hold our ground. We are also affirming when it comes to certain things we will hold our ground.
These strengths are what help us get along well with others and make friends easily. Making friends
has always come easily for me but I can come across as reserved or indecisive which is why I

Essay On The Bombing Of Hiroshima And Nagasaki
August 6, 1945 was the day that hit Japan hard and also helped stop the Second World War. That was
the day that Harry S. Truman decided the only way to stop the war was to drop the first atomic bomb
on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in attempt to get Japan to surrender. The bomb went down in history as
one of the biggest bombings. The bombings in both cities affected many Japanese citizens, mentally
and physically. The bombings didn t only affect citizens in Japan, both others who wondered if
bombing the two cities was the right thing to do. Even to this day, there is debate on whether Japan
would have surrendered without the bombings, or if the bombings made them surrender.
In May 1945, Germany had surrendered and the only countries fighting was America and Japan.
America wanted an unconditional surrender, and Japan was not wanting to give in to that. Harry S.
Truman, the president at the time, had the tough decision of whether to bomb the Japanese cities of
Hiroshima and Nagasaki or not. If he bombed them, they would have no choice, but to surrender, yet it
would injure thousands of citizens. Truman had decided to do it. On the 6th day in August, the ...

However, not many studies have made it clear as to how wide is the gap between CEO pay here in
America compared to the minimum wage worker and how does this gap compare to other countries.
There is an article called CEOs Get Paid Too Much, According to Pretty Much Everyone in the World
by Ms. Gavett. The article is interesting to point out the differences in CEO pay gaps according to the
minimum wages around the world. The article also gives what many people perceive as an ideal pay
gap between the wealthy and poor around the world. I was not surprised to see that the America CEO
pay gap is the highest in the world and by a large margin. The ideal pay gap for America according to
the study should be around 6.7 to 1 in America. For example, the largest desired ratio difference
Australia at 8.3 to 1 would be hypothetically making over $500,000 a year. (Gavett, 2014, p. 1) While
most Americans feel that CEO pay gap is larger at around 30 to 1. However, Americans would be
stunned to know America s real wage gap related to CEO to the worker. America s real pay gap is the
highest in the world at 350 to 1. Many of the heated debates about whether CEO pay should be capped
or the minimum wage increased are debates based on an extreme lack of knowledge about the true
state of affairs. (Gavett, 2014, p. 1) Judging by the actual current pay gap figures, I suggest placing a

Japan Imperialism
Japan Within the History of Empires Japan s history has been mostly accounted as a history of a
homogeneous national entity in the post war historiography. Yet as Andre Schmid and Jordan Sand
contest, this notion is replete with problems. Not only does this interpretation gloss over the historical
fact of Japan as an imperialist and colonialist power, but it also dismisses the dynamic embedded in
history that shaped the trajectory of Japan from an empire to a nation state as seen today. This paper
will briefly discuss the question of Japan s national history and argues for a reconsideration of Japan s
historical position within the history of empires by drawing this week s readings. There is no doubt
that Japan was once an empire and an imperialist as well as a colonialist power. James Huffman s
definition of colonialism and imperialism gives a concise account: while imperialism refers to tangible
or intangible dominance and colonialism caters more to concrete extra territories, they are not
exclusive to each other. Although not until the acquisition of Taiwan in 1895 was Japan as a formal
imperialist/colonial power established, its exertion of power in Hokkaido and Okinawa could be
traced as preceding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As Cooper argues, the emergence of nation states is only a recent phenomenon, a result of the
permeable boundaries between empires and other types of political entities within the dynamic world
politics. The transformation from an empire to a nation state is not an inevitable result of the European
experience. Neither is the historical trajectory of Japan. Its abrupt change from a formal empire to a
state is actually a product of imperial intersections which brought about the collisions among the
empires and led to the defeat and eradication of Japan s imperialist/colonialist

Racial Identity
Introduction:
As someone who identifies as a multi racial woman, I have found that my racial location in society has
been different based on who I am around. I am of lighter skin, and I have acknowledged I am more
privileged than a woman who is darker than me. As a multi racial woman, I at times have had to make
sure I fit in based on who I was surrounded by. I am aware that in ways I do benefit from white
privilege, but in a lot of ways I am still put into the subordinate group by the dominate racial groups. I
fully became aware of my racial identity as a child, going to a predominately white elementary school.
After my encounters with some of the peers and teachers at this school, I became aware that I was
different , and for the first time not feeling fully accepted into my peer groups.
Dominant/subordinate spectrum:
As stated before I identify as a multi racial woman. I am African American, White, and Lebanese.
Racially I can fall into both subordinate and dominate groups. I am a lighter skinned, multi racial
woman, and in many ways, have been treated differently compared to those who have a darker skin
tone. Because lighter skin is viewed as more acceptable, I have been treated better by the dominant
racial group. The fact that my skin is lighter does put me at the higher end of the dominant spectrum. I
am taken more seriously, because my skin is lighter, I am more legitimate in the eyes of some.
Although my skin is lighter I am still placed into the subordinate

Loyalty, By George Orwell
Loyalty Questioned, and Humanity Revealed Loyalty is a bond a mutual trust, the most personal and
sacred bond in human history. You must have loyalty before you can have friendship, or love. Loyalty
means someone can count on you, someone can trust you to be there when in need. Loyalty is a major
theme of George Orwell s novel 1984. In a totalitarian world where loyalty, love, and any other
personal feelings are outlawed by the vicious Party, some are still trying to find the strength to rebel.
Winston, a silent rebel of the party, lives in constant fear of being captured and tortured for his
suppressed protest. He yearns to live, to feel, and to make love. After he meets a beautiful girl named
Julia, who shares his disdain for the Party, he knows she is the key to his dreams. The love story
between these two revolves around loyalty and rebellion. This novel focuses on the importance of
loyalty, and why it must be suppressed if a totalitarian society is to be achieved. It also focuses on how
even the strongest of loyalties can be broken under extreme stress. No loyalty is safe when torture, and
constant torment are forced on an individual. This is a heartbreaking and depressing novel that sheds
some harsh reality on loyalty and betrayal. The importance of loyalty, and the breaking point of trust
are both major themes of the novel 1984. Loyalty is incredibly important to any kind of relationship,
and it is of particular importance to Winston and Julia in 1984. The love

Transition from Early Years Essay
This assignment is based upon my understanding of child development and children s learning,
considering the curriculum for the Early Years and the curriculum for the Early Years Foundation
Stage/Key Stage One. I propose to outline a rationale for effectively continuing children s learning,

In addition, simply because a child moves from the Foundation Stage into Key Stage One shouldn t
mean that the curriculum ceases being active. Young children learn best when they are engaged in
worthwhile, hands on experiences. On the same premise, play does not have to end but it needs to be
teacher initiated and led in order to be of much educational value, for instance, children are unlikely to
spell words correctly, if there isn t a teacher to help sound out the letters in the word.

Smooth Transitions. In it they state a three year olds brain is twice as active as an adult brain and this
level of activity continues to the age of 9 or 10. Children develop 50% of their eventual ability to learn
before the age of 4 and another 30% before they are 8. Adult interaction and physical activity continue
to make a massive difference to learning during childhood When measuring the difference between
boys and girls they found that most girls have made sufficient links to their brains to begin the
complex skills of reading and writing by the time they are four and a half while in most boys it is
nearer to six They also say that research from all over the world

The Importance Of Role Models For Young Children
Role models are particularly important for young children, and are a key factor in theirbehaviour and
the development of their identity (Aacap, 2017). Children may have several role models who they
admire and aspire to become, it is the actions of these role models that have an impact upon how
children think and behave. Although not all role models are good, those that are can have a positive
impact on children by encouraging them to have greater self esteem. They also encourage children to
strive for and achieve goals and help them to gain good work habits to have a successful career in the
future. (Livestrong, 2017). According to Silver (Livestrong, 2017) all of these positive aspects can be
achieved by ensuring children have role models who have morals, confidence, are hardworking,
respectful, optimistic and creative.

since her creation by Mattel in 1959. In the 1960 s Barbie could be seen as an Astronaut before Neil

given powerful roles and she became president in the 1990 s before any female candidate had been
elected for presidency. Each year since 2011, Mattel has introduced a doll portraying a career under

plays with Barbie, she imagines everything she can become (Barbie Media, 2016). This is a powerful
message to young girls who may have been under the impression that certain roles within the work
place should be gender specific. It allows girls to believe in equalityand that they are capable of
striving for and achieving bigger career goals in their future. In turn, this encourages children to focus
on their education to help them achieve these goals, just like Barbie.
Due to changes in technology, Barbie is now starring in her own movies as well as engaging in video

The Killer Angels Book Review
June 21, 2012 The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara: The Random House Publishing Group, New
York, 1974.
The Killer Angels is a stunning recollection of the telltale battle of the Civil War: the Battle of
Gettysburg. Set from June 29 to July 3, 1863 and told from the vantage points of several soldiers and
commanding officers from both sides, including Lee, Longstreet, and Chamberlain, Michael Shaara
effectively paints a picture of the war that divided America, from the tactical planning to the emotional
hardships The book opened with a sodden Confederate spy as he blazed through the Union lines in the
dead of night on June 29, 1863 toward the headquarters of Confederate general Robert E. Lee with ...

During one such moment, Chamberlain is reminded of a Shakespearean speech: What a piece of work
man is...in action how like an angel! (page 126). Upon hearing this, Chamberlain s father commented,
Well, boy, if he s an angel, he s sure a murderin angel. (page 126). From this interaction, Chamberlain
came up with Man: the Killer Angels , a thought he often revisited over the course of the Battle of
Gettysburg, and from which the book acquires its title. Chamberlain acted with the intention of getting
something positive out of the war. He never treated the Confederates as though they were less than
him: Chamberlain put out a hand. Sir he said. The Alabama man nodded slightly. His voice was so low
Chamberlain could hardly hear it. Do you have some water? Certainly. Chamberlain offered his own
canteen. (page 243). It is even known that he had his troops salute the surrendering South at
Appomattox. Overall, I found Michael Shaara s The Killer Angels an interesting book; it shed a new
and different light on the Battle of Gettysburg by showing it from multiple points of view. I believe
that Shaara was successful in writing in the diction of his chosen narrators; he used slang and dropped
g s for the Confederate soldiers and used proper grammar and British terminology for the Englishman,
Freemantle. I was also impressed by his knowledge of military terms and the effectiveness of which
he used them. The terms were used enough that

Events That Have Changed America Essay
Abraham Lincoln had it right when he said, My dream is of a place and time where America will once
again be seen as the last best hope of earth. From the time of Abraham Lincoln until now, America has
endured so much, but is still hopeful. Throughout history, there have been many events that have
changed America, such as, natural disasters, the Civil Rights movement, and multiple terrorist attacks;
having endured all of which gives people hope for a brighter future. Completely out of human control,
natural disasters take their toll on people by destroying properties and crops, as well as killing people.
There have been many tornadoes in the past, because of these events there are now better warning
systems and rebuilding programs. After hurricanes, many people open up their homes for people in
need. There are also many large scale refugee centers that help people that have lost everything due to
a hurricane. Adversity brings out a kindness and generosity that is not always present until a storm
wakes people up to the needs of others. A man made storm can also bring an awaking to American
society. The Civil Rights Movement took place from 1954 1968. The goal of the Civil Rights

Common Law And Equity Law
COMMON LAW AND EQUITY
Introduction
During the 12th and 13th century, a survey was conducted on tradition, custom and law under the
common law system of England. This survey originally developed as court decisions. In England, the
equity laws are developed after the creation of the common law. The analysis based on development
of justice and is now used in the royal courts. This gives us the story of the 1066 when the England
was attacked and concluded that there is no common law system, but the local court system. It is
called the power of traditional dishes such as Shires and counties. The foundations of the common law
have known in public as customary law. In this assignment, me the author will describe the
development of the UK system of common Law and Equity. Arguments about judge s role in the
development of legal principles will be made.
The Common Law
During the conquest in 1066, William applied old legal customs in generalizing to the entire kingdom.
It was the origin of the Common Law; the essential characteristic was that it was rooted deeply in
Roman law to be based on the customs and practices from medieval traditions. These customs are still
mainly oral; procedures are carried out by royal courts who judge case leaving significant room for
interpretation. Gradually, the common law is insufficient and ineffective for a number of disputes.
The Equity
Individuals appeal directly to the king, arguing the fairness of their problems. This procedure, called

Examples Of Objective Anxiety
Objective and Neurotic Anxiety:
There are two kinds of anxieties, the objective anxiety and the neurotic anxiety. Objective anxiety
occurs when there is a real, external threat and danger and neurotic anxiety arrives from within the
self, due to unconscious feelings and memories. In order for the individual to cope with the neurotic
anxiety he develops various defence mechanisms. One of them is the mechanism of projection which
is when his unwanted feelings and impulses that are responsible for the anxiety, are projected to
someone else. This has as a result, the individual to alleviate his anxiety but by acting in this way the
real threat is still within himself and it still influence him by distorting his reality. This distortion of
the reality is the effect of his projection as now he is perceiving others as not what they really are but
as what he had projected onto them. Others can introject, absorb and identify with these projections
and start to act and behave like they belong to them. This is what Melanie Klein named Projective
identification.

Compare And Contrast The Book And The Neverending Story
Like everyone else, my remembrances of childhood contain hazy memories of Atreyu doing battle
with Gmork, and a young Barrett Oliver as Bastian yelling I will do what I dream! So, in a mood to
reaffirm my youthful fantasies, I picked up a copy of Michael Ende s 1979 novel upon which the
movie was loosely based, The Neverending Story . I was not surprised that the largely dark tone of the
movie was, of course, much darker, deeper and much more sustained in the novel. But I am not here to
compare the book to the movie, both of which are classics in their own right. Like the best of what is
considered children s literature, The Neverending Story has an appeal and a depth that literally begs
for continued readings as one grows older. A novel about growth, maturity, the power (fraught as it is)
of imagination, and the necessity of books to provide us with different perspectives on our world, The
Neverending Story is a challenging children s novel which respects its readers enough to not treat
them like children.

Religious Language And Non Cognitive Language
Religious language is essentially the communication about religious ideas, faith and belief.
Significantly religious language refers to the terms and phrases we use when discussing God and his
nature; it is an attempt to talk about God using our non cognitive language. Religious language falls
into two categories; cognitive and non cognitive. Cognitive language expresses facts and knowledge
that can be proved to be either true or false. Whereas, non cognitive language expresses things which
are neither true nor false. There is a debate whether religious language is truly meaningful because the
concept of God is something other and timeless , yet we only talk of things using our knowledge that
is acquired through our sense experience. Therefore, if something is other and timeless , technically is
it not part of our experience and thus how can we talk about it?
Firstly, it can be argued that religious language has been proven to be meaningful. The Via Negativa ,
or The Negative Way is a way of talking about God which focuses on saying what he is not rather than
what he is. It is based on the idea that because God is transcendent, we cannot therefore speak of him.
However, we can clearly say what he is not. It s a bit like the game Guess Who , as once we know
what God is not, we can work out what he is. The Via Negativa was put forward by Pseudo Dionysius
in a book called Mystical Theology . This is a good way to approach the subject of God, since our
language is

The Importance Of Romantic Literature
In conclusion of her famous Letter to the Women of England, on the Injustice of Mental Subordination
(1799), Mary Robinson listed in alphabetical order the names of over forty contemporary women
writers who by the prevalent injustice and literary subordination were not or only partially recognized
for their contributions to the British literary community of the romanticism era. The list contained the
names of well known and relatively obscure women writers, poets, novelists, essayists and dramatists,
including the likes of well known Mary Wollstonecraft, Ann Radcliffe, and the relatively unknown
author of Biography, letters, c. Mrs. Thickness . In her closing assertion, she stated that there are men
who affect, to think lightly of the literary productions of women: and yet no works of the present day
are so universally read as theirs . This assertion resonates with Stephen C. Brehrendt s position on the
fate and honor accorded to women writers, novelists, essayists, dramatists and particularly poets of the
romanticism era, and the need to rewrite and remap the concept of influence, and the structuralism
literary and cultural theory that tends to want to place women at the periphery of romantic poetry
rather than the center where they truly belong in his article the New Romanticism for Old: Displacing
Our Expectations and Our Models . In his article, he opined like Mary Robinson, that the activities
and literary works of British women authors were as influential as

I compile, through various mediums, information regarding initial public offerings, or IPO s. The

facts create certainty that these instruments are profitable currently and in the long run. It appears
through study that investors have increased their consumption of initial public offerings since the 2007

However, it appears that the performance of these issues has lagged the broader market, which in my

Does the Final Chapter of Bronte s Jane Eyre Fit with the...
The final chapter s of Bronte s Jane Eyre have been a subject of discussion since it s first publication.
Many say the the ending does not fit and other argue that it does. There is a lot of evidence pointing to
the latter. The conclusion reveals the fate of Mr. Rochester and Jane, Adele, and of St. John. All of the
endings, a mixture of both happy and tragic, to fit with the entire story and can explained because of
the Victorian era. This essay will argue that the conclusion of this novel, more specifically that Jane
does go back to Mr. Rochester, is extremely fitting to both the plot and the essence of the novel. Many

Jane still has her independence even though she goes back to him. Not only does the relationship even
out, the biggest way Jane keeps her independence and her character traits is that she chooses to go
back to Rochester. She sets aside her brain and uses her heart fully in making the decision. It was my
time to assume ascendency. My powers were in play and in force, (301). She went back to Rochester
and married him because she wanted to. She did not need to marry Rochester for his money or his
social status, she married him because she wanted to. One of the biggest themes of Jane Eyre is the
ideal woman and the struggle between choosing to be passionate or suppressing it. At the very end, it
is most fitting for the character to develop in such a way that she chooses to be passionate. During the
time of the novel as well, women were meant to suppress their wants and desires but the novel is very
ahead of it s time. It s showing that it is perfectly alright to marry for love and marriage won t make
you lose your independence. The happy ending for Mr. Rochester and Jane are not the only fitting
thing about the ending. Adèle s fate is also very fitting for the plot and the English Victorian era. There
was always a parallel between little Adèle and Jane when she was younger. Both were orphans, and
both were eventually sent away to a terribly run school. It would only make sense, that Jane, having

Public Transport Systems Of The Uk
Currently there are already a few alternatives to cars available to a large amount of people, the most
prevalent of these being public transport systems which count towards about 16% of commuters as
their usual method of transport in the UK[6]. In the future we will probably see more alternatives such
as driver less cars, notably one being developed by google, and some even speculate as to more
science fiction like modes of transportation e.g. According to Shaw, in the future everyone will use
telekinetically controlled hover boards [1]. The question is somewhat speculative at best as there are
too many factors currently involved as to the requirement of cars both now and in the future.
One of the most compelling arguments against needing to know how to drive is the driver less car
which have had reasonable success under the development of Google, which by 2012 completed more

This was achieved about 2 years after the project was first publicly announced and aimed to
fundamentally change the use of cars [3]. The concept itself has a lot of merit as it would give those
previously unable to drive, such as those who are blind or otherwise disabled, means to more
independently get around. A good example of how a driver less car would be was seen in the film
adaptation of Isaac Asimov s I, Robot, in which all cars where computer driven but also gave the

Sarbanes Oxley Act And Its Effect On Market Liquidity
Market liquidity proves to be important to both investors and sellers worldwide. Liquidity refers to the
relationship between the speed of the sale, and the price of the sale. Liquid markets have buyer ask
prices relatively similar to seller ask prices, making this a preferable situation for both the investor and
the seller (Abella, 2016). The Sarbanes Oxley Act in 2002 incentivized institutions to keep more
accurate and attainable records of business. The Act being based off of the fraudulent activity of
several high profile companies (eg. Enron), was put in place to better monitor and record a companies
transactions, improve management style, and promote ethically responsible behavior in the workplace
(Keneth, 2015). Our main purpose is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Each measurement was calculated from TAQ data. Both Table 1 and Table 2 represent 1%, 5%, and
10% significance levels with ***,**, and * respectively. As represented in table 2, researchers were
able to determine SOX had a significant impact in the long term (90+ days). While quoted spread and
share depth show little change immediately after SOX, both measures improve as time passes. This
supports the conclusion that markets actually improved as time passed with respect to liquidity. After
270 days of SOX implementation, share depth (the volume of pending orders) improved by 1060
shares, and adverse selection component of spreads was lowered by 1.1 cents.
In addition, table 1 details the results of the model ∆Quoted spread or ∆Effective spread = β0 + β1
∆(TACC/TA) + β2 ∆(1/Price) + β3 ∆Return volatility + β4 ∆Log(Dollar trading volume) + β5
∆Log(Market value of equity) + ε created by the same researchers who formed table 2. The effective
spread is the average effective percentage spread at time t while quoted spread is the average quoted
spread at time t. The change is calculated from subtracting pre SOX averages from post SOX
averages. Data was sampled from 588 firms over three years (from January 1, 2001 to December 31,
2004). The main significant variable is the change in volatility. This variable shows a statistically
significant change at the 1% level. After the passage of SOX, market

Weak Levels of Consistency in Practice
The article describes about the SQL standard levels. SQL means the Standard Query Language. In
SQL different types of queries are being involved and different types of operations are being
performed under it. SQL often means the collection of the large number of tables. SQL Create
statement is used for creating the tables. Basically create statement is used for performing any type of
operation. After creating the table only we can perform any type of operation like insert, update and
delete. An example for create statement is create table customer( customer_id int, customer_name
varchar(50), customer_city varchar(50), salary int);. Here under the customer table we have created
four columns. Customer_id is declared as integer, customer_name and customer city is declared as
varchar, salary is declared as integer. After creating the customer table we can insert values into the
table. The values are being inserted using the insert into statement. The values are inserted into the
customer table like this. Insert into customer values( 1001 , dheeraj , hyderabad , 10000 ). Here in the
above example we have inserted the four values into it. That is 1001 value is being inserted into the
customer_id, dheeraj value is being inserted into the customer_name, hyderabad value is being
inserted into the customer_city, and 10000 value is being inserted into the salary.
The other way to insert the

Gothic Motifs Of Bram Stoker s Dracula
The novel Dracula is a very popular book that was written in the form of Gothic Literature. This novel
was written by Bram Stoker in the Victorian Age. A large portion of this piece of writing deals with
many famous Gothic motifs. Gothic Literature combines the usual Gothic horror with fiction and
Romanticism (Wikipedia). A motif is a distinctive symbol or dominant idea used in literature. So
therefore, a Gothic motif is a literary symbol that usually combines fiction with either horror or
romance. Bram Stoker s usage of Gothic motifs not only helps define Dracula as a piece of Gothic
Literature, but also helps the reader become better acquainted with what is happening in the novel.
Gothic motifs are found in many different forms in pieces of work, and if readers are already
accustomed to these motifs, it makes reading Dracula clearer and easier. Stoker uses many different
Gothic motifs throughout this novel, but there are only a few that are the more important and stand out
from the rest. These motifs are: castles and strange places, power and constraint, and revenants.
Castles and strange places are important motifs in Dracula because the entire first section of the story
involves Johnathan Harker making a trip up to Castle Dracula in Transylvania―a very strange place.
The Count s castle in Dracula, like any other castle described in Gothic Literature, is viewed as an old,
deserted structure of terror. Castles in this time period were thought of as haunted and imprisoning,

Edna Ferber, Jewish American Feminist Essay
Edna Ferber s childhood and career influences many of her works. She was born in 1885 and died in
1968. Growing up, she was taunted for being Jewish. Her family moved a great deal, so she was able
to see a lot of the country. She eventually landed a job as a reporter, but faced a lot of criticism at the
workplace for being a woman. When asked about her role model, Edna Ferber said, My mother is of
the iron age when things were not handed to people on velvet pads of ease She had a zest for life and
the ability to impart it on others. Her belief in the eternity of life has a nourishing effect on her and all
those who come in contact with her. She is a wonderful woman (Shapiro 15). Because of this, she

Since she spent most of her life being taunted for being Jewish, this is to be expected. She frequently
shows Jews to be smart, attractive, and/or successful. She mentions the mistreatment of Jews in nearly
all of her novels. In Cimarron, the town Jew was running for mayor. But the wife of the other
candidate gave a speech about the race where she declared, ?A Jew for mayor of Osage! They?ll be
having an Indian mayor next. Mr. Wyatt?s folks are real Americans? (Ferber 218).
She writes about the mistreatment of Native Americans to a great extent in Cimarron. Sabra?s son was
particularly fond of them and when arguing with his mother?s family said, ?Indians don?t fight white
men anymore. They can?t. Their, uh, spirit is broken. they only fought in the first place because the
white men took their buff?loes away from them, that they lived on and ate and traded the skins and
that was all the had, and their land away from them? (Ferber 150). All of her novels are read as a
celebration of Americana, when she is actually writing about unfair treatment of the underdog, such as
the Jew, the Negro, the Indian, or the strength of the American woman, who would persevere and
survive alone even when the man in her life deserted her. Both themes are deeply rooted in her own
life? (Shapiro 9).
A more difficult theme to discern in Edna Ferber?s work is her view of love and

Confucianism and the Chinese View of Life Essay
The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of
security he does not forget the possibility of ruin. When all is orderly, he does not forget that disorder
may come. Thus his person is not endangered, and his States and all their clans are preserved.
Confucius
Confucianism created the Chinese view of life. The Confucian view is based on the ancient Chinese
tradition. It can be stated that the view of Confucius and that of the Chinese began in the same place (
Bush, 15). In subsequent centuries Confucius teachings exerted a powerful influence on the Chinese
nation. Therefore, the history that surrounds both Confucius as well as Confucianism is relevant to

During the four years immediately after his marriage, poverty forced him to perform unskilled labors
for the chief of the district in which he lived (Mungello 78).
Then in 527 B.C., Confucius mother died. After a period of mourning he began his career as a teacher.
He usually traveled and instructed the small body of disciples that gathered around him. His reputation
as a man of learning and character and his reverence for Chinese ideals and customs soon spread
through the principality of Lu ( Bush, 23).
Confucius was a master teacher, who was concerned with thought and action that could be potentially
bring order and harmony. Confucius was said to have attracted three thousand students, of who
seventy two of which were his closest disciples. Together they mastered the six rituals including
music, archery, charioteering, literature, and mathematics (DeVous and Slote, 9). Living as he did in
the second half of the Chou dynasty, Confucius deplored the contemporary disorder and lack of moral
standards. He came to believe that the only remedy was to convert people once more to the principles
and precepts of the sages of ancient times ( Bush, 18). Therefore, he lectured to his students on the
ancient classics. He taught the great value of power of example. Confucius said that rulers could only
be great if they themselves lead perfect lives. If they willing to be guided by moral principles, their
states would inevitably

Promote Creativity and Creative Learning in Young Children
1.1
Creative activities are fun for children, they are suggested to help children have positive experiences
and develop important characteristics and abilities which lead to a sense of purpose and achievement.
Creativity helps children find ways of expressing themselves through the arts, giving them
opportunities to explore different medias. It involves being imaginative and original. Creativity
involves activities such as:
Drawing/painting
Design
Modelling and sculpting
Craft
Creative movement
Music
Role play/small world
Creativity is often more about the process rather than the end project, it is useful for many reasons:
Developing confidence
Developing good relationships
Finding our strengths and weaknesses
Developing communication ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cultural approaches
All children can be creative, but it can be suppressed or enhanced depending on the support of the
environment. Therefore there is the idea that society must be ready for new ideas and innovations.
In practice this approach would ensure that we provide and environment that can be explored and
inhabit creativity.
Role modelling
Children learn from watching and being with adults who are being creative.
In practice this suggests we show in the way we work and think that we are creative flexibility,
problem solving and openly drawing/painting.
1.3
Creativity can support young children s development in a number of ways. They learn how to manage
and express their feelings through problem solving and a sense of achievement with the end project.
Children can build up self confidence by listening to other ideas and working in a team, especially
when using music as they can learn to communicate and with singing it can also help children s
speech. They will learn about numeracy and developing their reading and writing skills and
communicate in a team through creative play which will develop their overall speech and listening
skills. Creativity can help develop fine motor skills by using tools and cutting and materials such as
crayons, paints and sticking etc. Which is important for

Taos Pueblo Analysis
According to the Taos Pueblo website, this mission is called the San Geronimo or St. Jerome, Chapel
and was completed in 1850 to replace the original church which was destroyed in the War with
Mexico by the U.S. Army in 1847. The ruins of that church that was built in 1619 can still be seen at
the pueblo s graveyard. That church had also been destroyed previously during the Pueblo Revolt of
1680 which was led by the Indians of Taos Pueblo. St. Jerome is the patron saint of Taos Pueblo: The
church of the pueblo always sees people taking photographs and sketchers alike it is so beautiful. It is

Food Insecurity In Sub-Saharan Africa
Food is a necessary part of ever individual s daily life. Without food, the body cannot function
properly, resulting in poor health, exhaustion, and even death by starvation. Therefore, food insecurity
continues to be an international global epidemic. The journal article by Harrigan suggests that the
citizens of the Sub Saharan African country of Malawia are in further poverty due to their lack of food
and agricultural resources. The newspaper article from the Guardian tells the real life story of African
citizens struggling to farm and find food due to the crop shortages that have spanned Africa for the
past two years. This is a current global issue, and the journal and news article prove that there is much
to be done in order to help restore ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not only is this proof, but it also provides intimate details that attract readers and act as a call to action
to help the people of sub Saharan Africa. In contrast to the academic article, this piece tells a story
rather than a statistical statement. It uses real individuals experiencing the hunger, pain, and
exhaustion, thereby adding emotional appeal to the news piece in order to persuade readers for more
help. Moreover, statistical facts are also extremely important when analyzing food security. One must
understand that the numbers mean more than a digit on a page; they are a measure of human suffering,
pain, and hunger. The data recorded by Statistics Canada in 2012 showed that the highest level of food
insecurity was in isolated provinces and territories, as well as where there was a higher level of
poverty (Roshanafshar Hawkins, 2015). This data can be deemed accurate because not only is a
government of Canada report, it also follows the trend that impoverished places fall into higher levels
of food insecurity. Due to how isolated the most impoverished territories are it can be difficult to
import food, find a steady job, or have access to

History Of The Women s Suffrage Movement
There will never be complete equality until women themselves help to make laws and elect
lawmakers. This is a quote from Susan B. Anthony acknowledging the women s suffrage movement.
After the abolition of slavery in 1865, voting rights were extended to all citizens, however citizens in
this case meant, men only. As a result of only men having voting rights, women started advocating the
women s suffrage movement. The women s suffrage movement or woman suffrage was the struggle
for women to vote and run for office. This movement began in 1848 and it continued until 1920. There
were many women involved in this movement, but the two most important women were Susan B.
Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Susan and Elizabeth campaigned for women ... Show more

Many men who went against women voting would argue that women should stay home and clean.
Men have said things such as, You do not need a ballot to clean out your sink spout, and because 90%
of the women either do not want it, or do not care . This things were written in a pamphlet published
in 1910 by the organization, National Association Opposed to Woman Suffrage. Artists created
political cartoons that mocked suffragists, religious leaders opposed women who were part of the
women s suffrage movement, and articles also criticized woman who took part in this movement. On
the other hand, many men supported suffragists. Men such as; Frederick Douglas, George Francis
Train, Thetus W. Sims, James Mott, Daniel Anthony, Henry Blackwell, and Francis Minor. Frederick
signed the Declaration of Sentiments at the Seneca Falls Convention because while everyone else
criticized Elizabeth Cady Stanton. George Francis Train helped Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady
Stanton by funding their own newspaper called, The Revolution ; he would write on the newspaper.
Tethus W. Sims voted in favor of suffrage in 1918. James Mott was Lucretia Mott s husband and he
supported her in the women s rights activist. James was also one of the men who signed the
Declaration of Sentiments. Daniel Anthony was Susan B. Anthony s father who was a women s rights
advocate. Henry Blackwell served as an editor for the official women s right newspaper. Francis
Minor was married to a women s rights activist and he was a lawyer. Francis used his position of a
lawyer to help his wife in court when she was accused of voting illegally . To sum up, many men

  • 2. Jeffrey Baker Hair Case Study The Curious Case of Jeffrey Baker s Hair The more intently Jess stared at the back of Jeffrey Baker s head, the more it started to resemble this particularly gruesome hairball Blue Bell, her cat, had coughed up last spring. Blue Bell had gotten into the neighbour s garbage can and feasted on a mixture of discarded floss, rotten fruit, and their dead pet mouse. The resulting hairball was the most revolting thing Jess had ever seen, and she had to plug her nose as she cleaned up the mess. Blue Bell didn t look too great after retching it up either. Jeffrey s hair was a ragged brown mess that clung to his head like the hair in a shower drain, with just as much zeal. Jess wondered mildly if he owned a comb, or if she should offer the one she carried in her purse. Still, she wondered what it would be like to have that icky mop on her own head: What would it feel like? Would it have a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mrs. Perty droned with dull disapproval. She stood with one hand on her hip, the other holding a book open. Jess froze immediately, as Jeffrey spun around. • 3. The Industrialization of the Northern United States Essays A Connecticut minister, Horace Bushnell, once said that the industrialization of the United States north produced a complete revolution in Americans life and manners. The complete revolution that Bushnell speaks of was an era of industrialization triggered by a population growth, an increase in literacy rates, and the development of labor saving technologies in the northern region of the United States. This dramatic economic and social transformation instigated a series of outcomes, both positive and negative, for the United States during the early to mid nineteenth century. Many aspects of life for United States citizens were changing, such as the growing population in the north. In addition, women and people of color were finding ... The availability of factory jobs in the north caused a great influx of workers to the region during this era. One group of people, immigrants, particularly met the demand for labor in the north. Between 1840 and 1860, over 4 million people entered the United States. About 90 percent of these immigrants headed for the northern states where job opportunities were abundant. The new advancements in railroads and steamboats, the increase in commercial farming, and the development of large factories triggered the relocation of multitudes to northern cities. Each one building upon another, the events that took place in the north during the 1800s instigated an extreme growth of cities and urban societies, proving population growth to be a key effect of the industrialization in the United States north. With the center of production moving from households to mass production, women in America had to alter their way of life. A great number of women followed labor opportunities to the mills, factories, and workshops. For the first time in history, large numbers of women left their homes to participate in the public world. Client Goal Research reveals that self esteem is the most consistent predictor of the likelihood and extent of substance abuse (Uba et al., 2013). The client is a 15 year old female who was court ordered to Inspirations for Youth and Families treatment center. Client was arrested for shop lifting but was also charged with the possession of Heroin. For the past couple weeks, the client presented with low self esteem of self that may have played a role in her poor choice in substance abuse. On top of Detox and group therapy, the client will receive Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in hopes to improve self esteem to alter the substance abuse behavior. Single Subject Evaluation The author used an ABAB design with the client. The ABAB design represents an effort to measure a baseline, a treatment measurement, the withdrawal of treatment, and the re introduction of treatment. The author chose the design because it involves two parts including gathering of baseline information, the application of a treatment and measurement of the effects of the treatment; and of what happens when the treatment is removed and then again applying the treatment and measuring the change. With the amount of time allowed, the ABAB design worked best. Measurement Tool The Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale (RSS) was used to measure the clients level of self esteem. However, it wasn t until 3500 BCE when Sumerian people of Mesopotamia started writing called cuneiform. This writing used specific marks in wet clay with a reed implement. These scripts were based on pictorial symbols and later mixed with phonetic elements. The Sumerians were a commercial people and writing was developed to record quantities of goods. The Greek phonetic writing system came from Phoenicia and was quite different from that of Mesopotamia, yet it still owes its development to the Sumerians and their advances in the written word. With the rise of the cities in Mesopotamia, and the need for resources which were lacking in the region, long distance trade developed and, with it, the need to be able to communicate across the expanses between cities or regions. In order to express more complex terms, Phonograms were created. These phonograms were symbols that represented sounds which gave more meaning. With this, they had a dynamic means of conveying motion to and from a location. By the Third Millennium B.C, cuneiform was used for a vast array of economic, religious, political, literary, and scholarly documents. The Importance Of Detection Of Breast Cancer Cells Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer related death in women and it is estimated that in 2017, 5000 women will die of this disease in Canada2. The main reason for death is due to metastases in other organs and circulating tumour cells (CTCs) may be the main cause of metastatic lesions1. CTCs detach from the primary tumour and travel through blood or lymphatic vessels to form a secondary tumour1. The purpose of the 2016 preliminary study was to determine if CTCs can be detected in the blood of adjuvant breast cancer patients using real time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT qPCR) to measure gene expression values of cytokeratin (CK) 8, 18, and 191. The authors did not find a correlation between tumour data such as tumour size or tumour receptor type and relative gene expression. Was qPCR The Right Method for This Study? Currently, the only FDA approved method for enumeration of CTCs is the CellSearch System which was introduced in 20047. This technique works by enriching cells from the peripheral blood sample using a magnetic ferrofluid containing antibodies against epithelial adhesion molecule7. The cells are then stained for expression of CK and detection is based on morphology, size and fluorescence; therefore, CTCs expressing these epithelial markers can be quantified7. Previous research has demonstrated that the CellSearch System may have a low yield of CTC capture which is a major concern for its clinical value7. qPCR method had an increased sensitivity of detecting CTCs and several studies have shown that it gives more positive results compared to the CellSearch System10, 11, 13. Before accepting qPCR as the new gold standard method based on its enhanced sensitivity, its limitations for clinical use should be considered. First, the presence of tumour cells in blood samples could not be quantified and therefore the levels of gene expression cannot be correlated with the number of CTCs in a blood sample1. Although the authors suggest generating standard curves by combining qPCR with the CellSearch System, ultimately this would seem to be redundant in that it is reintroducing a method with ... But who is to say these issues only fall on to the heads of just one species? How is it that homo sapiens are the only species to have all these discriminatory and demeaning issues thrust upon them? This is the main premise against the argument of speciesm. It has been an age old problem that some group of people or beings have been oppressed to an inhumane level. Whether it be slavery, sexism, or now a very pertinent one in our society today, speciesm, these issues have been around for the ages and still haunt our society to this day. James Huffman s definition of colonialism and imperialism gives a concise account: while imperialism refers to tangible or intangible dominance and colonialism caters more to concrete extra territories, they are not exclusive to each other. You must have loyalty before you can have friendship, or love. Loyalty means someone can count on you, someone can trust you to be there when in need. Loyalty is a major theme of George Orwell s novel 1984. In a totalitarian world where loyalty, love, and any other personal feelings are outlawed by the vicious Party, some are still trying to find the strength to rebel. Winston, a silent rebel of the party, lives in constant fear of being captured and tortured for his suppressed protest. He yearns to live, to feel, and to make love. After he meets a beautiful girl named Julia, who shares his disdain for the Party, he knows she is the key to his dreams. The love story between these two revolves around loyalty and rebellion. This novel focuses on the importance of loyalty, and why it must be suppressed if a totalitarian society is to be achieved. It also focuses on how even the strongest of loyalties can be broken under extreme stress. No loyalty is safe when torture, and constant torment are forced on an individual. On the same premise, play does not have to end but it needs to be teacher initiated and led in order to be of much educational value, for instance, children are unlikely to spell words correctly, if there isn t a teacher to help sound out the letters in the word. Ros Bayley and Sally Featherstone are writers on teaching and learning have written a book entitled Smooth Transitions. In it they state a three year olds brain is twice as active as an adult brain and this level of activity continues to the age of 9 or 10. Children develop 50% of their eventual ability to learn before the age of 4 and another 30% before they are 8. Adult interaction and physical activity continue to make a massive difference to learning during childhood When measuring the difference between boys and girls they found that most girls have made sufficient links to their brains to begin the complex skills of reading and writing by the time they are four and a half while in most boys it is nearer to six They also say that research from all over the world ... • 25. The Importance Of Role Models For Young Children Role models are particularly important for young children, and are a key factor in theirbehaviour and the development of their identity (Aacap, 2017). Children may have several role models who they admire and aspire to become, it is the actions of these role models that have an impact upon how children think and behave. Although not all role models are good, those that are can have a positive impact on children by encouraging them to have greater self esteem. They also encourage children to strive for and achieve goals and help them to gain good work habits to have a successful career in the future. (Livestrong, 2017). According to Silver (Livestrong, 2017) all of these positive aspects can be achieved by ensuring children have role models who have morals, confidence, are hardworking, respectful, optimistic and creative. Reflecting change in feminism and female roles in the workplace, Barbie has had over 150 careers since her creation by Mattel in 1959. In the 1960 s Barbie could be seen as an Astronaut before Neil Armstrong walked on the moon; she was given the position as CEO in the 1980s before women were given powerful roles and she became president in the 1990 s before any female candidate had been elected for presidency. Each year since 2011, Mattel has introduced a doll portraying a career under represented by women including an engineer, architect and entrepreneur. Additionally, in 2015, Mattel released anadvertisement called imagine the possibilities which ended with the message When a girl plays with Barbie, she imagines everything she can become (Barbie Media, 2016). This is a powerful message to young girls who may have been under the impression that certain roles within the work place should be gender specific. It allows girls to believe in equalityand that they are capable of striving for and achieving bigger career goals in their future. In turn, this encourages children to focus on their education to help them achieve these goals, just like Barbie. Due to changes in technology, Barbie is now starring in her own movies as well as engaging in video blogs with over 2 million subscribers to her YouTube channel. The Killer Angels is a stunning recollection of the telltale battle of the Civil War: the Battle of Gettysburg. Set from June 29 to July 3, 1863 and told from the vantage points of several soldiers and commanding officers from both sides, including Lee, Longstreet, and Chamberlain, Michael Shaara effectively paints a picture of the war that divided America, from the tactical planning to the emotional hardships The book opened with a sodden Confederate spy as he blazed through the Union lines in the dead of night on June 29, 1863 toward the headquarters of Confederate general Robert E. Upon hearing this, Chamberlain s father commented, Well, boy, if he s an angel, he s sure a murderin angel. (page 126). From this interaction, Chamberlain came up with Man: the Killer Angels , a thought he often revisited over the course of the Battle of Gettysburg, and from which the book acquires its title. Chamberlain acted with the intention of getting something positive out of the war. He never treated the Confederates as though they were less than him: Chamberlain put out a hand. Sir he said. The Alabama man nodded slightly. His voice was so low Chamberlain could hardly hear it. Do you have some water? Certainly. Chamberlain offered his own canteen. (page 243). It is even known that he had his troops salute the surrendering South at Appomattox. Overall, I found Michael Shaara s The Killer Angels an interesting book; it shed a new and different light on the Battle of Gettysburg by showing it from multiple points of view. I believe that Shaara was successful in writing in the diction of his chosen narrators; he used slang and dropped g s for the Confederate soldiers and used proper grammar and British terminology for the Englishman, Freemantle. I was also impressed by his knowledge of military terms and the effectiveness of which he used them. The terms were used enough that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

From the time of Abraham Lincoln until now, America has endured so much, but is still hopeful. Throughout history, there have been many events that have changed America, such as, natural disasters, the Civil Rights movement, and multiple terrorist attacks; having endured all of which gives people hope for a brighter future. Completely out of human control, natural disasters take their toll on people by destroying properties and crops, as well as killing people. There have been many tornadoes in the past, because of these events there are now better warning systems and rebuilding programs. After hurricanes, many people open up their homes for people in need. There are also many large scale refugee centers that help people that have lost everything due to a hurricane. • 32. Examples Of Objective Anxiety Objective and Neurotic Anxiety: There are two kinds of anxieties, the objective anxiety and the neurotic anxiety. Objective anxiety occurs when there is a real, external threat and danger and neurotic anxiety arrives from within the self, due to unconscious feelings and memories. In order for the individual to cope with the neurotic anxiety he develops various defence mechanisms. One of them is the mechanism of projection which is when his unwanted feelings and impulses that are responsible for the anxiety, are projected to someone else. This has as a result, the individual to alleviate his anxiety but by acting in this way the real threat is still within himself and it still influence him by distorting his reality. This distortion of the reality is the effect of his projection as now he is perceiving others as not what they really are but as what he had projected onto them. Compare And Contrast The Book And The Neverending Story Like everyone else, my remembrances of childhood contain hazy memories of Atreyu doing battle with Gmork, and a young Barrett Oliver as Bastian yelling I will do what I dream! So, in a mood to reaffirm my youthful fantasies, I picked up a copy of Michael Ende s 1979 novel upon which the movie was loosely based, The Neverending Story . I was not surprised that the largely dark tone of the movie was, of course, much darker, deeper and much more sustained in the novel. But I am not here to compare the book to the movie, both of which are classics in their own right. Like the best of what is considered children s literature, The Neverending Story has an appeal and a depth that literally begs for continued readings as one grows older. A novel about growth, maturity, the power (fraught as it is) of imagination, and the necessity of books to provide us with different perspectives on our world, The Neverending Story is a challenging children s novel which respects its readers enough to not treat them like children. • 35. Religious Language And Non Cognitive Language Religious language is essentially the communication about religious ideas, faith and belief. Significantly religious language refers to the terms and phrases we use when discussing God and his nature; it is an attempt to talk about God using our non cognitive language. Religious language falls into two categories; cognitive and non cognitive. Cognitive language expresses facts and knowledge that can be proved to be either true or false. Whereas, non cognitive language expresses things which are neither true nor false. There is a debate whether religious language is truly meaningful because the concept of God is something other and timeless , yet we only talk of things using our knowledge that is acquired through our sense experience. Therefore, if something is other and timeless , technically is it not part of our experience and thus how can we talk about it? Firstly, it can be argued that religious language has been proven to be meaningful. The Via Negativa , or The Negative Way is a way of talking about God which focuses on saying what he is not rather than what he is. It is based on the idea that because God is transcendent, we cannot therefore speak of him. However, we can clearly say what he is not. It s a bit like the game Guess Who , as once we know what God is not, we can work out what he is. The Via Negativa was put forward by Pseudo Dionysius in a book called Mystical Theology . Bram Stoker s usage of Gothic motifs not only helps define Dracula as a piece of Gothic Literature, but also helps the reader become better acquainted with what is happening in the novel. Gothic motifs are found in many different forms in pieces of work, and if readers are already accustomed to these motifs, it makes reading Dracula clearer and easier. Stoker uses many different Gothic motifs throughout this novel, but there are only a few that are the more important and stand out from the rest. These motifs are: castles and strange places, power and constraint, and revenants. Castles and strange places are important motifs in Dracula because the entire first section of the story involves Johnathan Harker making a trip up to Castle Dracula in Transylvania―a very strange place. • 44. Edna Ferber, Jewish American Feminist Essay Edna Ferber s childhood and career influences many of her works. She was born in 1885 and died in 1968. Growing up, she was taunted for being Jewish. Her family moved a great deal, so she was able to see a lot of the country. She eventually landed a job as a reporter, but faced a lot of criticism at the workplace for being a woman. When asked about her role model, Edna Ferber said, My mother is of the iron age when things were not handed to people on velvet pads of ease She had a zest for life and the ability to impart it on others. She frequently shows Jews to be smart, attractive, and/or successful. She mentions the mistreatment of Jews in nearly all of her novels. In Cimarron, the town Jew was running for mayor. But the wife of the other candidate gave a speech about the race where she declared, ?A Jew for mayor of Osage! They?ll be having an Indian mayor next. Mr. Wyatt?s folks are real Americans? (Ferber 218). She writes about the mistreatment of Native Americans to a great extent in Cimarron. Sabra?s son was particularly fond of them and when arguing with his mother?s family said, ?Indians don?t fight white men anymore. They can?t. Their, uh, spirit is broken. they only fought in the first place because the white men took their buff?loes away from them, that they lived on and ate and traded the skins and that was all the had, and their land away from them? (Ferber 150). All of her novels are read as a celebration of Americana, when she is actually writing about unfair treatment of the underdog, such as the Jew, the Negro, the Indian, or the strength of the American woman, who would persevere and survive alone even when the man in her life deserted her. Both themes are deeply rooted in her own life? (Shapiro 9). A more difficult theme to discern in Edna Ferber?s work is her view of love and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
