This document provides a step-by-step process for creating and publishing a best-selling book without actually writing it. It involves dictating the book content using a transcription service, then using the transcribed content to structure the book in Scrivener. Additional steps include planning chapters, collecting a foreword, generating testimonials, launching a pre-sale funnel to build hype, and setting up an online store to sell the book. The goal is to leverage the perceived value of an authoritative book to generate leads and sales for one's business.

Presented at the 2016 Women’s Leadership Conference, March 12, 2016 at the University of Missouri.

Through examples and my own personal narrative, I’ll reveal why women need to tell their stories in compelling, coherent ways. We’ll explore five real-world ways to strengthen your writing and speaking voice in this interactive session. You can communicate your story so it becomes meaningful, memorable and moving.

Every single word you write and release into the inter-webs is an opportunity to reach through a computer screen and make a connection. A connection that leads to a relationship, that leads to a client, that leads to a referral that leads to another client (or three).
The internet gives us access to so many more businesses – businesses that may look just like yours. Potential clients can compare and contrast (on their smart phones, possibly while hiding in your toilet). We need to connect with people, to inspire and provoke opinion, and to grow a tribe around our business so that we’re cultivating leads and relationships, not shouting into a crowd.
Particularly if what you do is so left-of-centre that your Nanna nods politely when you try to explain it, you need to educate your prospects, through your blog, on what you’re doing and why they need it.

• Landed Kevin Harrington as Foreword
• Sign up over 300 people for prelaunch
• Sell thousands of copies at a profit.
In this training..
https://smarterdestiny.com/geek
3. • Author = Authority
• Proves you know your stuff
• Book = Business Card in this noisy age!
• It’s a challenge – People respect that
• High perceived value
• Great for lead generation
• Content you can re-purpose over and
over!

Who is Martyn Cook?
5. • In 2017 I wrote a “book”
• Good but very short
• Tremendous effort to write
• Released it as a PDF
• Felt regret for an entire year!
Introduction
https://book.smarterdestiny.com
10. • Thick but not TOO thick
• Large letter = 2.5cms
• Looked at similar size books
• Found that 300 pages was the sweet
spot
• Most books had about 50 chapters –
that also seemed about right!
Maths
https://smarterdestiny.com/geek
11. • 300 Pages Total
• Minus 25 For Chapter heading pages
• Minus 25 Pages for Images etc
• Leaves 250 Pages of Writing
• Average of 300 Words Per Page
• Total = 75,000 Words
• Which is 1500 Words per Chapter
Maths
https://smarterdestiny.com/geek
12. • I discovered that you can DICTATE your
entire book
• You can speak much faster than you
can write
• Approximately 150 words per minute
• So each chapter (1500)
• Can be dictated in just 10 minutes!
• ..and someone else can transcribe the
recording!
The Secret Sauce
13. • #1 You don’t need to type
• You don’t need a keyboard
• You only need your phone
• Talking is faster than typing
• You can talk whilst doing other things
• Thus you can potentially write your book
during otherwise “dead” time.
• (in my case) – Whilst walking my dog!
Why Dictate?
16. • What topic are you an expert on?
• Expert = Just knowing at least a little bit more than others.
• Will your chosen topic add enough value to others that they will
pay money for it?
• Will your topic solve customer problems?
• Is there enough of a market to buy your book?
• Basically, niche selection – which I cover in this video here:
https://smarterdestiny.com/findniche
Planning your book…
17. • Note down your ideas for chapter topics
• Look at chapters in other books in your niche
• Search for blog articles in your niche
• Look on Youtube for videos in your niche
• Look at reviews on Amazon products in your niche
• Aim for 75+ ideas as you’ll filter some out later.
Chapter Ideas…
19. • Story that demonstrates talking points
• Actionable advice relating to the story that they
can apply to their business
• Recap about the story and advice
• Action points so they can cement the learning
in their mind
Chapter Structure
20. • Story about when I accidentally dyed a poodle
green.
• Advice about being careful about choosing
dyes and mixing them properly
• Recap about the story and advice
• Homework to research whether your preferred
dyes include ingredient X and if alternatives are
available.
Applied to Dog Haircut Book
21. • Story about when I accidentally dyed a poodle green.
• Day of the week, location and time
• How I was feeling – long shift etc
• Accidentally grabbed the wrong dye!
• The customer was so angry!
• Advice about being careful about choosing dyes and mixing
them properly
• Check the label
• Be careful of XYZ ingredient (because)
• Recap about the story and advice
• What are you thinking about when working?
• Avoid the angry customers by …
• Homework to research whether your preferred dyes include
ingredient X and if alternatives are available.
Fleshed Out:
23. • Rev transcribes the recording to dropbox folder
• I shared the dropbox folder with my colleague
• She “wrote up” the transcription in Google Docs
• BONUS: She learnt all about Ecommerce marketing at the
same time!
Transcribed to Dropbox
24. • Finally she took the write ups and
loaded them into Scrivener
• Scrivener = Word Processor for Book
Writing
• Youtube is your friend here!
Graduated to Scrivener
25. • Create a simple lead capture for
• Tell as many people as you can that
your book is coming out
• Collect Name, Phone, Email
• I recommend Kartra as the funnel
builder (Link below)
Pre-Launch – Build Hype
https://smarterdestiny.com/funnelbuilder
26. • Foreword is optional (but recommended)
• Should be impressive and influencial
• Should be relevant to the topic
• Research people that match your criteria
• Make list of your dream 50 people
• Contact your dream 50 people
• I love linkedin for this!
• Or their website contact forms
• Stay focused, try to contact at least 10 people per
day
Foreword
https://smarterdestiny.com/geek
27. • Message should be brief, complimentary and to
the point
• It’s an honour to be a foreword so it’s not as hard
as you think
• Each person will have different questions – so
answer as best as possible
• If you get multiple yes’s pick the best person for
the job.
Foreword (continued)
https://smarterdestiny.com/geek
28. • Contact TRUSTED people asking if they would like a free copy of
your book in exchange for a review
• I recommend watermarking the PDF before sending, unique
watermark for each.. Or send a physical copy
• Make sure you follow up with each person to get either a testimonial
.. Or a ”No”
Testimonials
https://smarterdestiny.com/geek
29. • Leverage your Foreword and Testimonials
• And your book structure, who you are, why you wrote
the book
• Again, I recommend Kartra for doing this –
https://smarterdestiny.com/funnelbuilder
• I have relevant upsells after the sales page to help
cover the cost of shipping books.
• I link Kartra to a Shopify store which I use as the
backend to my book funnel.
• Kartra also has an affiliate program
• Feel free to model my funnel here:
Selling Your Book
https://smarterdestiny.com/geek
30. • If you’ve ever done a video/talk/screenshare you can
transcribe that into a chapter and include slides as
chapter images
• Download ”Book mockup” PSD (Photoshop) files and
all you need is the cover to create images of a
finished book!
• Email me at martyn@smarterdestiny.com if you want
more info and I’ll add more videos on this topic.

Editor's Notes
I wasn’t happy with my book that was out
I wanted to create something truly awesome
Something that was absolutely my best work
Something I was proud of ..
Thing is.. I knew from my first book that I HATED writing ..
It was a struggle from start to finish … and I knew what the outcome would be if I tried to do the same over again!
I knew I had the information in my brain … but I didn’t have the time or the inclination to actually WRITE a book
So I started researching ways to write a book without actually needing to WRITE a book!
After a lot of frustration and searching I found the solution!Which is kinda lucky as now I can present to you the start to finish way I managed to publish a 300 page book!
You ready for this?
Meet Winston!
I love Walking Winston .. And often I’ll use the time to listen to podcasts or make calls..
I walk him every day .. Usually for at least 40 minutes
Therefore… If each chapter could be dictated in 10 minutes. Potentially I could churn out 4 chapters per walk!
Meaning that in 13 Dog walks – I could dictate my whole book!
Look for themes amongst your chapter ideas
Sort them by theme
Try and get a similar number of chapters in each theme
Try and ensure that through all the themes combined you’re creating a framework that solves the problems of your target customer.
So here’s a made up way of applying a chapter structure to a book on Dog haircuts..
So here’s a made up way of applying a chapter structure to a book on Dog haircuts..
For transcribing I used Rev.com
They charge $1 per minute of transcribing and are very accurate
Alternatively you can just use an audio recording app on your phone and upload to rev.com
I used bluetooth headphones
And used the bulletpoint notes on my phone for reference.
