How To Wiki
How To Wiki

Wiki means "Fast" in Hawaiian
How To Wiki

A wiki is one of the fastest and simplest ways to
         create a collaborative website.
How To Wiki

A website where people
 in separate locations
can store, share, and edit, digital
          information.
Wikis are great for teacher collaboration,
          and student projects.
What you can do with a wiki
is only limited by your imagination.
So lets get started!
First you need to sign up for a free wiki account @
           http://www.wikispaces.com
Enter a user name, password,
 and a valid email address.
en click “Get Started”
Wikispaces will send you a confirmation email
            almost immediately.
Click on the “Confirm Email” link.
It should take you right to your account.
e first page you see is the “Help” page.
It can be accessed any time from the menu bar.
But since you have me!
Create a new wiki now

We are going to jump right in, and click
       “Create a new wiki now”
First give your wiki a name.
Then Determine who can view and edit your wiki.
Select “Wiki Type” from the pull down menu.
             en Click “Create.”
Welcome to your wiki “Home” page.
To begin, click the "Edit" Tab
Welcome to your wiki “Home” page.
To begin, click the "Edit" Tab
is opens a simple word processing toolbar.
Now you can edit and format the page.
e process is very similar to standard
email and word processing programs.
Type what you want,
or copy and paste existing text.
To add images and attach documents
click the “File” icon on the toolbar.
is opens the “Images & Files” window.
You can link to files on an external webpage.
Or click the “+Upload Files” button.
Now you can upload one,
or multiple files from you computer.
e upload limits for free accounts are:
10 MB per file and 2GB total storage.
Once a file appears in the window,
double clicking it’s icon will insert it.
Clicking on the image
opens the “Files Properties” window.
is allows you to resize, align,
 add a caption, and/or a link.
You can add unlimited content with
Linked files and embedded widgets.
To add Video or Widgets
click on the “Widgets” icon.
e “Widgets” menu includes: wiki extras,
calendars, maps, chat, audio, video, and more.
For our example select video,
and click on the “Teacher Tube” option.
Go to the Teacher Tube video webpage
for the video you want to embed.
en copy the HTML code in the
 “Embeddable Player” field.
Paste the code into the box provided
in the widget window, and click “Save”.
An “Other Widget” icon appears.
is icon can be resized and repositioned.
Click save on the toolbar, and voila!
You have video on your wiki.
Now that you have your first page,
      it’s time to add links.
By selecting text and clicking
the “Link” icon in the toolbar
e “Add Link” window opens and the selected
text appears in the “New Page Name” field.
Change the page name, or link it to
pages in this wiki, other wikis, and websites.
To save as is click “Add Link”
en click “Save” on the toolbar.
   Your link is now active.
Activate the new page,
 by clicking the link.
So that it will appear in your side bar,
and in your link to existing pages menu.
When the new page loads, click “Edit”.
    You can enter content now,
or just click “Save” to active the page.
e page name now appears in the sidebar,
and the “Insert Link” pull down menu.
Congratulations!

You have just created a wiki.
Have fun adding content, links, pages, and widgets.
Don’t worry, anything you do can be edited later.
Clicking the “History” tab allows you to
revert back to previous versions of the wiki.
e History tab also allows you to track
who has added or edited, and when.
e discussion tab allows users to post commentary
and have discussion about page specific content.
e “Notify Me” tab allows users to be notified
whenever content on a specific page is altered.
e “Manage Wiki” link in the side bar offers an
        entire new level of options.
e “Permissions” Icon lets you set
who can access, and edit content.
Upgraded accounts can control access
down to a page by page basis.
Invite members and guests to the wiki
by clicking the “Invite People” icon.
Enter members emails, or wiki usernames
           to invite them.
If you have the time and are feeling creative,
click the “Look & Feel” icon.
Here you customize almost every aspect
       of your wikis appearance.
ere is still a lot more you can learn about wikis,
but you should be well on your way.
e best part is, you are not alone
because anyone you allow access can
add, edit, and help your wiki come alive.
If there is anything else you need to know, the
“Help” link will answer most of your questions.
ere are also a bunch of tutorials that will
walk you through what your wiki can do.
Just to get you juices flowing, here are a few
examples of what educators can do with wikis.
Including some core curriculum standards that
may be applicable depending on the content and
        processes you choose to pursue.
