Lighting Controls play a key role esp. in connection with the new changing energy standards. Traditional and wired systems are often outside clients budgets. Wireless systems are emerging offering affordable accessible, often DIY controls. There are different wireless systems and protocols ranging from Zigbee to JenNetIP as well as mixed systems. We would like to give an overview on how they work, outline technological pro and cons, describe new functionalities and highlight how they go beyond the traditional lighting manufacturer approach. In addition many new personalized controls come to market in connection with the SmartHome. Lighting Controls are now accessible, affordable for everyone and not just for the high-end market. We like to give an overview over the current emerging systems and how they differ from legacy systems.

Solid state lighting control is a critical component of many lighting designs. The variety of possible control approaches can be confusing and a bit overwhelming. The goal of this presentation is to demystify the control vocabulary and provide a better understanding of the positive and negative attributes of each of the various approaches to solid state dimming. The concept is to have a role play situation, with a lighting designer and a controls rep discussing best approaches to various applications. The rep will be assisted by a ventriloquist dummy - everytime the rep uses tech speak to explain something, the dummy will translate it into very understandable language.

The Lighting industry has been through a revolution in the last few years with LED technology taking over from HID lamp sources and although better understood now than they were five years ago, we have seen a general uncertainty arise around a number of topics. In a reaction to this lack of understanding we now witness, as a suggested part of tender submissions, questions being asked that were never asked of HID solutions, these were posed when LED street lighting technology was developing. For example, whether the colour shift was 3, 4 or 5 macadam ellipses was perhaps pertinent a few years ago in relation to how the LEDs would perform, yet the industry was never to bothered when Son lamps changed their colour appearance and colour rendering properties within their relatively short life. With the maturing LED technology are they really still appropriate to be asked and what should the buyer really be asking instead?
This talk will look to explore these areas and clarify in simple terms the reality. Topics covered will include maintenance factors, the use of constant light output, control of glare and explore the use of drivers in the lanterns – basically the weakest link.
It will finally look at areas of research required to further our confidence in using the new technology and the wider lighting research being carried out by the CIE.

Road Lighting is a resource talk presented to the 5th Technical Seminar of Integrated Institute of Electrical Engineers in Central Region Chapter of KSA (IIEE-CRCSA). It is based in international standards such as IESNA RP-8 and BS5489-1.
Last February 17, 2012, the 2nd IIEE-CRCSA Technical Seminar kicked off with a good response from the members and non-members with the participation of more than 100 who showed-up at the White Palace Hotel, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Seminar title was “Basics of Indoor Lighting using DIALux”. The seminar was conducted by Engr. Michael T. Santiago, a Lighting Application & Design Engineer from Saudi Lighting Company. The participants were awed by his DIALux 4.10 software demonstration specially when he imported a room layout from AutoCad drawing and applied the lighting calculation on it which later provided a very nice colored 3-D drawing of the room. A continuation of this seminar which is “Basics of Outdoor Lighting” will be presented on the incoming 14th Midyear Convention.

SMD (Surface Mounted Device) LED
~ LED chips are permanently mounted on PCB
~ Commonly seen in LED bulbs and strip LED lights
~ can have more than just two contacts
~ can be up to 3 diodes on a single chip, with each diode
having an individual circuit.
~ Each circuit would have one cathode and one anode,
leading to 2, 4 or 6 contacts in a chip.
~ The chip can include a red, green, and blue diode. With
these three diodes, you can already create virtually any
color simply by adjusting the output level.
~ SMD chips are also known to be bright. They can
produce 50 to 100 lumens per watt.
APPLICATION:
Best used for RGB Application
Best used for LED Panels and LED Linear
Versatile use of lens makes it ideal for Floodlights, Streetlights and Highbays

COB (Chips on Board) LED
~ is a new technology of LED packaging
~ commonly seen in LED bulbs and strip LED lights
~ typically have 9 or more diodes and only have 1 circuit
and 2 contacts, regardless of the number of the diodes
~ has more diodes and gives off panel-like appearance
~ can’t be used to create colour changing bulbs or lights
but ideal for Mono-Color LED
~ Diffusers are needed to control glare
APPLICATION:
Best used for downlights and spotlights due to its concentrated light beam

ENCAPSULATED (POLYURETHANE) PU
LEDs are sensitive electronic components and often require
additional protection against mechanical damage, moisture,
and other environmental factors.
ADVANTAGES:
~ can be mono or RGB LED
~ gives off a hazy/cloudy light-diffusing effect
~ flexible/elastic/rubbery
~ high electrical insulation
~ low conductance to heat
~ underwater (LED driver must be above water and using
IP68 cable glands)
HIGH RESISTANCE AGAINST:
~ mechanical stress or shock
~ moisture & humidity ingress
~ exposure to chemical contamination
~ high-temperature environments: -25 to +50 C
~ fire-retardant

LED OPTICS
LED lighting fixtures utilize at least one type of secondary optic to alter the beam of light
coming from the LED source. We look at 2 materials used:
REFLECTORS:
~ sit behind the LED to alter the beam
of light
~ made using plastic and can be metal
coated.
~ can be smooth or multifaceted
inside and in various different shapes
LENSES:
~ sit behind the LED to alter the beam
of light
~ come in various shapes and sizes,
for example round, square and
hexagonal
~ enable precise control over the
beams of light
~ masking the LED components within
DIFFUSERS:
~ come in various shapes and sizes, for
example round, square and hexagonal
~ enable precise control over the beams of
light
~ masking the LED components within
~ usually gives off increase of 10% light due
to diffusion (opalized diffuser)
~ usually gives off 120° beam

DIFFUSERS
PMMA (OPALIZED)
~ Clear plastic, sometimes
known as acrylic
~ is a cost-effective material
which is common in lenses
~ gives off extra ±10% light
APPLICATION: general lighting,
yellowing after some time
PMMA (PRISMATIC):
~ made of clear plastic have a
transmission of 70–90%
~ difficultly of ensuring
homogenous light distribution and
precise glare control
APPLICATION: not recommended
due to uncontrolled light & glare,
yellowing after some time
PC (POLYCARBONATE)
~ Temperature and impact
resistant plastic
~ also offers great optical
characteristics
APPLICATION: best for
outdoor, industrial and harsh
environments

GLASS
PROS:
~ Mechanical Strength and Durability (thermal, chemical, and
environmental)
~ Components Protection (does not carry a static charge that
attracts dirt)
~ UV Resistance (Glass does not degrade to the intense and
prolonged UV exposure)
~ Cost and Sourcing (low-cost and readily available material)
~ Flexibility (easily fabricated raw material)
CONS:
~ losses 9-10% of transmitted light by its material properties
alone
~ appears to be smooth, stable and chemically inert but
microscopically rough but chemically reactive
~ due to hydrophobic behavior, it causes dirt and debris build-up
~ Nearly 30% light loss seen in field due to dirt depreciation over
a luminaire’s lifetime
~ external and aging effects causes it be brittle and crack
eventually likewise but much worse with plastic diffusers

LED Efficacy - Quotient of the LED luminous output divided by the power consumed by the luminaire.
Luminaire Efficacy - Quotient of the luminaire luminous output divided by the power consumed by
the luminaire.
Both efficacy are expressed in Lm/W.
The difference, however, is, one is measured at LED level while, the other is on the Luminaire level.

If a product has a B10 rated life of 1,000 hours, this
means that only 10% of tested products failed within
1,000 hours, so the product should last much longer
than a product with a B50 rated life of 1,000 hours.

Input Current - the AC current coming from the AC source either 110V or 220V 60Hz
Drive Current - the DC current coming from the LED Driver that will branch out into the
LED module
Forward Current - the DC current which flows across the LED's leads, from anode to
cathode, for the individual LED to receive enough current to power on and give off light

12 July 2019
SPECIFICATION OF LEDS: LED DRIVERS
CONSTANT CURRENT vs CONSTANT VOLTAGE
CONSTANT CURRENT LED DRIVERS
are designed for a designated range of output
voltages and a fixed output current (mA). LEDs that
are rated to operate on a constant current driver
require a designated supply of current usually
specified in milliamps (mA) or amps (A). These
drivers vary the voltage along an electronic circuit
which allows current to remain constant throughout
the LED system.
Higher current ratings do make the LED brighter, but
if not regulated, the LED will draw more current than
it is rated for. Thermal Runaway refers to excess
current beyond the LEDs maximum drive current
which results in drastically lower LED life-spans and
premature burn outs due to increased temperature.
A constant current driver is the best way to drive
high power LEDs as it maintains a consistent
brightness across all LEDs in-series.

12 July 2019
SPECIFICATION OF LEDS: LED DRIVERS
CONSTANT CURRENT vs CONSTANT VOLTAGE
CONSTANT VOLTAGE LED DRIVERS
are designed for a single direct current (DC)
output voltage. Most common constant voltage
drivers (or Power Supplies) are 12VDC or 24VDC.
An LED light that is rated for constant voltage
usually specifies the amount of input voltage it
needs to operate correctly.
A constant voltage power supply receives standard
line voltage (120-277VAC). This is the type of
power that is typically output from your wall
outlets around the home. Constant Voltage Drivers
switch this alternating current voltage (VAC) to a
low direct current voltage (VDC). The driver will
always maintain a constant voltage no matter
what kind of current load is put on it.
BEST PRACTICE
~ Use Constant Current Drivers for High Powered LEDS to avoid LED burnout.
~ Use Constant Voltage Drivers for multiple LEDs arrays like LED rope light, LED strips,
LED bars, etc.

12 July 2019
SPECIFICATION OF LEDS: LED DRIVERS
INPUT VOLTAGE & FREQUENCY
At the moment, almost all application requires 220V – 60 Hz
However, there are older installations with existing systems of 110V – 60 Hz
In the market you are able to order the following drivers:
a) 100 - 277V, 50-60Hz (Universal), 200 - 240V (Direct)
b) 347 - 480V, 50-60Hz
c) DC drivers for 12V, 24V even 48V
POWER FACTOR
~ Power Factor Correction is done on LED driver level.
~ No LED should have a Power Factor of less than 0.90.

SPECIFICATION OF LEDS: LED DRIVERS
0-10V vs 1-10V LED DIMMERS
1-10V Dimming Driver
~ uses Pulse-width modulation and 100 ohm resistor
~ a 100% light output of LED is given 10V while minimum
is 10% light output at 1V
~ An actual switch off is required to completely turn off
the LED
0-10V Dimming Driver
~ Newer generation with the same principle
~ The difference is that its minimum is at 5.7% or 0.57V.
~ Anything lower than 0.57V is completely turned off
APPLICATION:
~ Since these are older generation dimmers, you order
the dimmer of your LED that matches as-built
dimming system
~ Best to order 0-10V dimmers
