Ethical Dilemma at Northlake
Week 3 Case Study #1
Cecellia Dantzler
Synopsis:Frank, manager of corporate reporting at Amalgamated Forest Products, has threatened to
go public with information regarding a falsified report on the effect of effluent controls on the
discharge of wastewater from pulp and paper companies, which has angered his boss, Jim McIntosh
and the company s president, Jim Letourneau. Letourneau was to testify before a legislative
subcommittee the following week and use the report, Endangered Species: The Pulp and Paper
Industry in the Upper Peninsula , to give the industry s perspective on proposed legislation. The
section of the report which contained the falsified financial information was prepared by Tina ...

The section of the report addressing the monetary impact of Amalgamated installing emission
control equipment had been falsified. The numbers used in the report were over exaggerated in
order to show that Amalgamated would suffer severely financially should this legislation be passed.
Recommendation #1:Amalgamated has three mills in the community. These three mills and the
corporate offices provide jobs to many of the 10,000 people of Northlake. The company is a major
contributor to the economy of the community. The recommendation is for Amalgamated to be
ethical and show corporate responsibility. No amount of money can be given for human life. The
aboriginal community is suffering from the effects of emission waste from the previous competitor
and from Amalgamated as well. Amalgamated should forego its own financial gain and do what is
ethically right to clean up their waste so that it does not affect the community. The company has
had the emissions problem for so long and it would only benefit them in the long run to do the right
thing and stop the pollution now.
Finding of Fact #2:Frank is being bullied, more specifically, being mobbed, by his vice president
and the president of the company. When Jim McIntosh confronts Frank about publically disclosing
the truth about the report, he is yelling and calling Frank stupid. He s threatening Frank with all
the things he could lose if he were to go forward with the truth. His face is bright red and he is

Retinoid Inhibits Nrf2 Signaling Pathway through Retinoic...
Retinoids, natural and synthetic signaling molecules that are structurally related to vitamin A.
Compounds such as retinol, retinal, retinoic acid, retinyl esters and other derivatives are considered
under the group of retinoids. Retinoids are significantly considered to be the most prominent
regulators of several essential biological functions. For instance, active derivative of retinol
(metabolite of Vitamin A) such as retinoic acid (RA) plays a major role in vision, cell
differentiation, tissue homeostasis, apoptosis, organogenesis, regulation of immune system and
embryonic pattern formation(1). In addition RA is also considered to be a potent chemopreventive
and tumor suppressive agent because of its apoptotic and anti oxidant... Show more content on

These isoforms are formed because of differential usage of promoters and alternative splicing
(8). As most, nuclear receptors including retinoid receptors possess similarities in their structural
organization. Based on homology with other nuclear receptors, RAR and RXR receptors
consists six conserved regions known as A F. The N terminal region contains two domains (A
/B) are designated as AF1 and they are the least conserved domains and highly variable in length
which exhibit a ligand independent transactivation activity. So far, there is no three dimensional
structure has been predicted for A/B domain. (9). Central region C possess DNA binding
domain (DBD) which is said to be the most conserved region and possess similarity in their
structure. DBD contains an important short motif known as P box which is responsible for
direct DNA interaction and detection of specificity for DNA binding. DBD also possess
additional sequences that are required for the homo or heterodimerization of nuclear receptors. A
pair of zinc fingers present in domain C is critically responsible for DNA specific contacts and
interaction. Domain D is the less conserved domain among nuclear receptors which acts as a
flexible hinge in between two domains such as C (DBD) and E (LBD) domains. In addition,
domain D possesses the nuclear localization signal (NLS) that regulates the sub cellular distribution
of nuclear receptors. The E region contains ligand binding domain (LBD) is

The Wannsee Conference Essay
The Wannsee Conference
Have you ever had a business meeting, a conference? Could you imagine a meeting to draw an
outline to exterminate a population, 11 million Jews? The Wannsee Conference was a meeting to
discuss how they would kill all the Jews. The Wannsee Conference put the Final Solution in motion;
the World had lost their opportunity to save 6 million Jews and others.
The Beginning Hitler came to power in Germany in 1933, after World War 1 when tensions were
high because the Treaty of Versailles blamed Germany for the destruction the war caused and they
were faced with the payment for all the damages, which sent Germany into economic downfall. The

After the hate started and kept steadily getting worse many Jews thought fleeing the country was
the best option had, but there was many obstacles. The only Jews allowed to leave the country
and emigrate were the ones that could afford it, and at this time not a lot of Jews had any money
at all since the discrimination started. (Bergen 164) Most countries didn t want the Jews either so
Hitler knew he could do what he wanted to them or they had no one to fight for them and nowhere

Growing bigger and bigger
Once Hitler realized Jews didn t really have anywhere to go, and that no other countries wanted
them and no one was trying to stop him, he knew his plan was working, and he didn t have
anything to worry about. November 9th and 10th was the night of the broken glass. The attacks on
Jews became very violent, they burned down their houses and synagogues, beat them, and Jews
were arrested and taken to concentration camps. 30,000 Jews were imprisoned by the end of that
night. (An Introductory History of the Holocaust) This was the first time Jews were actually
imprisoned/ segregated from Germans.

Casino Game Roulette
Roulette
Roulette is a casino game where The House or also known as the Dealer, rolls marbles around a
spinning circle that is slanted known as a roulette wheel. The wheel consists of 38 slots. The
marble rolls and will then eventually land on one of 38 red or black slots, numbered from 0 to 36
with there being two zeros. The idea of the game is to guess where it s going to land. The lower
the chance of you guessing right, the higher the possible payout can be. Everyone places their bets
on where they think the marble could possibly land. The dealer then closes the table to betting and
the marble is rolled.
There area couple possibilities for winning. You can guess the exact number the marble will land
on, you can split the bet to use select multiple possibilities of winning the round. which one of the
three thirds it will land on, the bottom or the top portion of the the wheel, a black, or red number,

The probability that the marble will land on a black number between 19 and 36 is Вј. The payout
of each of those is 2 to 1 because there is a ВЅ chance that you guess right.
If you guess a single number, the probability of guessing right is 1/38, so the payout is 38 to 1.
The choices that have a ВЅ chance of winning are low risk but also the lowest reward. Betting on a
singular number can either lose you your money or you can leave with 38 times as much money.
1 in 38 is a 2% chance, so it would be very unlikely you guess right.
Probability is everywhere. Probability is just about everything in the world. It s in the games that

Anger In The Angry Young Men
Anger is an innate feature and feeling that is present in all human beings. It is a feeling the leads
man to feel that he is not restricted and free. It gives one the motivation to face everything and
create his own predestination ( Grasso1).Vincent K. Bissonette believes that anger is a respond to
the injury and unfairness that the mind receives towards something (126). Aristotle declares that
anger is a motivation that accompanied by pain. It leads to the idea of trying to make the other
suffer through taking revenge from him without any reason (20). Carol Tavris asserts that anger,

The plot is absent, which strengthen the idea of routine in human s life. The dialogue is often

My Life Reflection Paper
Literature and writing have had an affect on my life starting from my early childhood and
continues to influence me as I end my 11th year of school. From children s pop up books to 500
page novels reading has always taken part in developing my life. From learning to write my name
to using vigorous research and planning to construct a 7 page paper over the Scarlet Letterand the
unfortunate events little Hester Prynneis forced to deal with, along with the thrilling task analyzing
two juxtaposed literary works. Throughout my life writingand literature have helped to guide me
in life and aides in my everyday life. In grades kindergarten through seventh I attended school at
Piqua Catholic and more times than not was unsatisfactory in my writing and literature skills. I
always seemed to be the kid that fell behind when reading a book or was constantly spelling
words incorrectly. It was not that I did not care or never did my work, I tried but nothing ever
clicked for me. Tutoring was brought up in chat among my parents but they hoped that it would
click eventually. My mother acted as my own personal tutor at times. In preparation for spelling
tests we would take a cookie sheet and cover it in shaving cream. After my mom gave me a word
I would spell it out in the shaving cream. This helped me to visualize the words while
incorporating some fun into studying. First grade was nightmare for me, My teacher, Mrs.
Quarter had suggested to my parents that I be held back because I was so far behind compared
to the other children in my class. At times we would read together in class, taking turns by going
around the room. It was embarrassing when the book came to me and every other word I would
stumble and need help with pronunciation. Although Mrs. Quarter suggested I be held back a
year that was not what she wanted. At times she would stay after school with me to practice
reading with me which greatly benefited me. With Mrs. Quarters help my reading and writing
greatly improved and by the end of my second grade year I was on honor roll. As I grew older and
transferred to Troy City Schools I felt that my classes had gotten easier, especially English. I
excelled in English, I will credit my English teacher Mrs.

Pros And Cons Of Plastic Surgery Essay
Plastic surgery is a medical specialty concerned with the correction or restoration of form and
function of a body part. There are a lot of arguments concerning plastic surgery. Some people even
argued that it should be banned. However, the fact that plastic surgery is still legally practiced
globally points out that the advantages significantly outweigh the disadvantages. Plastic surgery
should not be banned due to the following reasons. Firstly, plastic surgeryis needed for medical
purposes. Secondly, every human has the rights to choose what they want to do, as long as it is not
against the law. Thirdly, plastic surgery often leads to success. There is often a misconception that

physical appearances? Why is it okay for us to get change our physical appearances by getting

because dyeing your hair costs less and plastic surgery involves a plastic surgeon doesn t mean
that plastic surgery is unethical and inhumane. Therefore, there is nothing wrong with people
who choose to undergo plastic surgery to change their physical appearances. Plastic surgery
often leads to one s success. [3]A good example would be the South Korean booming k pop
celebrities who are known for their flawless faces and bodies. The recent success they achieved
was due to plastic surgeries they undertook to change into a completely different person with
increased self confidence and self esteem in performing. In the world we live today, success is

before undergoing any plastic surgery. This was a shock therapy to the world, underlining that
plastic surgeries may cause deaths. Some people say that having a plastic surgery is not worth the

Comprehensive School Counseling Program Evaluation Essay
In order to provide a comprehensive school counseling program (CSCP) that meets the unique
needs of Ocean Elementary School, the school counselor must understand the needs of the school.
Therefore, conducting a needs assessment can help a new school counselor to evaluate the CSCP in
order to plan, implement, and improve the effectiveness of the program (Astramovich Coker, 2007).
Additionally, utilizing the accountability bridge counseling program evaluation model, a
continuous evaluation cycle helps to improve services based on stakeholder feedback, the needs of
those served, and outcomes (Astramovich Coker, 2007). Within this model, a needs assessment
must be conducted in order to plan and develop services that address the needs of the students
(Astramovich Coker, 2007). Thus, by utilizing assessment questionnaires, the school counselorcan
gather information from the diverse population of students, parents, teachers, and administrator to
determine how the CSCP can best support all students needs (American School Counselor
Association [ASCA], 2012). Additionally, the use of other data, such as observations, standardized
testscores, absentee rates, and student referrals can support the feedback received on the
questionnaires. Based on the data, the school counselor can evaluate the school counseling program
in order to improve the program in the domain areas of academic, social/emotional, and career
development. Thus, within the accountability bridge counseling

Case Summary Synopsis
One man s claim of stumbling upon a small village and leaving behind a big promise to a little
girl has resulted in what is known as the Three Cups of Tea Scandal. There are disputed claims of
Greg Mortenson s details within his book Three Cups of Tea being false. He states that after
attempting to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, he gets separated from his climbing group and finds
himself in a small village, Korphe, located at the bottom of the Karakoram mountain range in
northeastern Pakistan. Whilst being taken care of by the villagers after wandering for 84 days,
a young girl approached him and asked him to build a school for them. He made a promise to do
so and that became the start of the Central Asia Institute. Within Three Cups of Tea , Mortenson
also claims to have been kidnapped by the Taliban whilst looking for a place to build a school.
These men from the Taliban supposedly held him hostage for eight days until he promised to
build schools in that same area. (Court, Livelli, Usman, 2011) These details were the intriguing
and inspiring details of Mortenson s books that brought many to donate in the first place and why
many became distraught after finding that almost everything he said was false. He did not visit
Korphe until nearly a year after he said he did and those men that kidnapped him were really his
hosts in the village he was visiting. The men claim that the Taliban did not even exist in their

Hume on Custom Habit
First Paper Assignment; Hume on Customs and Habits Custom, then, is the great guide of
human life. It is that principle alone which renders our experience useful to us, and makes us
expect, for the future, a similar train of events with those which have appeared in the past.
Without the influence of custom, we should be entirely ignorant of every matter of fact beyond
what is immediately present to the memory and senses. We should never know how to adjust
means to ends, or to employ our natural powers in the production of any effect. There would be
an end at once of all action, as well as of the chief part of speculation. (Hume, Enquiry) Hume is a

Hume has concluded that Customs and Habits attained from past experience are necessary for us
to navigate about the world. When these experiences are repeated and the outcomes are
consistent, we build a causal relation between the ideas and naturally accept the Principle of

The Letter Of The Visa Card
I did something crazy this weekend and traveled two states away to see my brothers and their
families.
I have a BP visa card from Chase. I was filling our van up with gas in Pennsylvania and it got
declined.
Ironic Occurrence Number 1: My BP Visa Card was declined when I was filling up with gas at a
BP station!
Actually, I didn t know it was declined at the time. The readout at the pump said see cashier . So,
I tried again and it failed again and told me to see cashier again.
So, ya know what I did? I went and saw the cashier.
He was a nice guy with a Indian accent. Who d a thunk it? A guy from India at a gas station? Yep.
He was very helpful and told me I vas sviping it too vast . So, he came out with me and showed me
how to svipe it slower. And after he did...the result was still see cashier .
Ironic Occurrence Number 2: The gas pump told the cashier he should see himself.
So, I used my other credit card and it worked fine.
I immediately called the phone number on the back of the card and I spoke to another person
from India. This time I think the person was actually located in India! She told me my credit card
was placed on hold for security reasons. She then asked me all sorts of verifying questions; mother
s maiden name, last four digits of my social security number, whether I was circumcised or not and
then told me everything was okay and my purchases should go through from now on.
And, that s not what happened.

Reasons For The Government Intervention
ECON1020 ASSIGNMENT 2
Question 1: Reasons for government intervention
Governments only intervene in a market to correct for market failures, their objective to restore
efficiency and increase economic well being of society. Market failure occurs when the market
fails to allocate resources efficiently, the buyer seller cannot reach a socially optimal point.
Traffic congestion is rivalrous in consumption because there is limited space on the road,
however, the road has the ability to be over consumed thus making it a common resource, because
one person s use of the good does not diminish other people s use of it. The issue of traffic
congestion is a negative externality because when one person drives on the road, their presence
reduces the speed of everyone else and thus increases the affected party s journey time. The graph
below (figure 1) shows the demand and supply of roads with Qmarket showing the equilibrium that
the forces of supply and demand have equalled. The private value is the drivers use of the roads
when there is no traffic congestion e.g. non peak hour. However, because their presences are an
negative externality. The demand curve shifts to the left and shown and the new demand curve is
the social value, the supply and demand now have an equilibrium at Qopt. The social value is the
private value externality.
Question 2: Public Policy Solutions

Environmental Effects On Bald Eagles
Although the concentrations of environmental contaminants in the prey of the nesting eagles were
one of the factors influencing bald eagle reproductive success, there was also habitat availability
and human disturbances. Territories unoccupied by another breeding pair must include sufficient
nest, perch, and roost trees, foraging areas, and a prey base in sufficient quantities to successfully
raise their young. Human disturbances that affect the populations must be of a type, degree,
amount, and timing not cause nest abandonment (Bowerman et. al 1995). Even though there all
these other factors, the contaminants was still looked at as the most important.

Just like DDT, these insecticides are not only affecting their target species but they are also
impacting the other species that come into contact with them. These human introduced
contaminants have had many negative impacts on non target species. One major insect that
insecticides are used for today is a mosquito. An ecotoxicology study was conduced where they
examined the effects of commercial mosquito insecticide formulations and predation on the
survival, growth, and development of a species of tadpoles (Pauley et. al 2015). They had to take
into consideration environmental stressors like predation and temperature because that can change
the lethality of the insecticide. They used three insecticide formulations: mosquito bits, mosquito
dunks, and mosquito torpedoes. Mosquito dunks showed the biggest significance because they
caused a decrease in tadpole survival when used with a predator. The predator was used as an
environmental stressor that affected the lethality of the formulation. This caused the decrease in
that tad pole species. Similar predator insecticide interactions have been found using a variety of
insecticides and herbicides, incorporating multiple environmental sources of amphibian stress

A Space For Rent By Airlines Essay
An airport, in simplified terms can really be considered as a space for rent by airlines. The job of
the airport is to provide the necessary amenities to the airlines, the passengers of the airlines and the
necessary capacity to do so. In most cities the population and tourism industry is likely the
determinant as to how big the airportis. Often with the bigger, busier and higher profile airports
(i.e. Dubai, Sydney, JFK) the charges are more for the use of their terminals, taxiways, runways etc.
It should be taken under consideration that there are many factors related to why there might be
such a sizeable difference between different airports and the associated fees. One such example
is an airport with current, or future plans of expansion. Often when an airport is expanding (i.e.
building new terminals, or extending runways etc.) fees such as landing fees, or gate charges
will increase. An example of this is Christchurch International airport, which has seen a steady
increase in charges since 2012, when the new terminal development began, and since then the
airport had continued to expand, including further gate additions, runway width expansions and
greater parking capabilities. For a Jet aircraft departure, a fixed fee of $150 was in place in 2012,
that number has since increased to $163 in 2016. Other fees that have also steadily increased
every year include, the terminal services charge, airfield services charge, passenger services
charge, check in desk charges and

Industrial Revolutions During Europe During The Industrial...
Industrial Revolution in Europe
Before the industrial revolution, Europe was mostly dominated by farmers but as the industrial
revolution progressed this changed dramatically. Industrial revolution had a significant impact in
the process by making new demands that shaped the way of life through increased competition and
technological innovation. Generally, it was a historical period that sparked in a stroke a number
numerous changes in the economic, social and political dimensions. It is considered as a period
that made the biggest impact on 19th century Europe considering that it was the period that the
countries realized significant progress that shaped their economies in great details with nationalism
and imperialism as well being direct impacts of the revolution.
Not many could have anticipated the rapid rise of the European industry that was realized from
industrial revolution. As a note, dominance in wage labor, rapid growth of cities and evolution of
industries mostly from steel and iron factories were perhaps the greatest changes that were
experienced. In economic changes, manifestations were evident through the increased rates of
immigration to better places, rapid growth of cities as centers of trade and changes in the type of
work and working structures. Socially, reorganization of family was experienced as well as changes
in ownership of jobs, rural to urban migration as well as where and when to work (Lynn et al. 413

competing in their even. ( grams of carbohydrates a day, grams of protein a day and timing of
intake.)
Soccer is a quick paced and Intense sport. It can also be very competitive and demanding to the
body. During a soccer game a player is constantly active for 45 minutes, following a ten minute
break and then another 45 minutes of constant activity.
Nutrition is extremely important to an athlete s performance and training. What they eat daily,
and weekly will be a huge impact on the athletes performance and energy levels. Dehydration is a
major factor an athlete needs to remember. Water is the most important thing for a soccer player.
It is important that a soccer player starts hydrating a day or two before a game/tournament. The
day before the game it is a good idea to keep sipping on a bottle of water throughout the whole day
drinking about 2/3 litres of water through out the day and plenty at meals.
Dehydration is also a major factor athletes need to remember. Water is important. A soccer player
should always remain hydrated so they are ready prior for games and tournaments. A player can
lose as much as three quarters of fluids in a fast paced game in hot climates (Mckenzie, N/A).
Keeping your body hydrated is one of the most important nutritional matters. Fluids are used
through the skin as sweat, but also due to the lungs when breathing.

Analysis Of Moniza Alvi Presents From My Aunts In Pakistan
Identity; a personalized, blank canvas, you have the brushes and paint right in front of you; with
all sorts of textures, colors and brush sizes; the vastness of possibilities of where the brush strokes
can take you confuses many people. Extracting every fact about your past and adding a
personalized touch to it, before splashing the fusion onto the canvas in front of you seems to be a
struggle for many people. Presents From My Aunts In Pakistan is a metaphorical, autobiographical
poem written by Moniza Alviabout her teenage years in which she portrays her conflict with
identity, conveying the overlapping cultures in her background that leave her confused, alienated
and embarrassed because of her half English, half Pakistani cultural background. In this essay, I will
be discussing the conflicts regarding identity and the struggles that come with trying to balance

Especially during their teenage years, when they move to another country or when their country
faces a crisis. I am a teenager, and I know for a fact that one of the main reasons I find it difficult
to create an identity is the amount of possibilities of who I can be. Also, most people my age
face this struggle and feel pressured to create an identity and stick to it before growing up too
quickly. It sometimes feels like a commitment, to be this person and keep being this person you
created, so much that you forget to just be yourself and do whatever makes you happy. I was an
alien in the sitting room Moniza states. The feeling of alienation is inevitable in cases like these. I
think that another chapter with conflicts regarding identity is when a person has parents with
different nationalities or has a multi cultural background, they often seem to struggle in finding

An Analysis of the film Gone With the Wind Catherine M. Piraino ENG 225 INRO TO FILM
Instructor Pal December 17, 2012 An Analysis of the film Gone with the Wind Rarely has a film
impacted an audience and held the test of time as the film Gone with the Wind. I have always
been curious if director, Victor Fleming and producer, David O. Selznick and screenplay writer,
Sidney Howard knew what they were creating a masterpiece and how this film would have such
an enormous impact on audiences for years to come. Interestingly enough there were some who
thought the film should not be made, as Irving Thalberg said to Louis B. Meyer in 1936, Forget it

The equipment was very cumbersome and color consultants were necessary to ensure accurate
tones and hues as directed by Selznick. (Dunagan, 2001). Selznick was very innovative with the
use of shadows and silhouettes, which he uses in several scenes of the film. Selznick s use of
silhouettes in both the opening scene and the scene prior to intermission are very dramatic as they
arouse emotion on the part of the audience. However, the emotions they evoked are very different.
In the opening scene, the silhouette of Scarlett and her father, Gerald the audience can feel the
love that Gerald has for his daughter as he illuminates his love for the land and how she will
understand as she get older. The audience can almost feel the picturesque beauty of the land before
them, as the sun is setting and Scarlett and Gerald in silhouettes. The second scene where Selznick
uses silhouettes is directly prior to the intermission of the film. However, the emotions here are far
different. Scarlett has journeyed to Tara, from the recently Yankee occupied Atlanta, with Melanie
and her newborn son and Prissy. She has encountered nothing but death and destruction on her
voyage. War beaten Scarlett returns to her home Tara only to find her home, ravaged, her sisters
ailing, her mother dead, her father mad and the plantation lacking food since Tara was used as

The Privacy Act Of 1988 Essay
According to Dictionary.com confidentiality is the right of an individual to have personal,
identifiable medical information kept private. The definition for this term is widely known in
health care, but when it is applied to adolescents many people do not understand the basics.
Doctors are responsible for informing adolescent patients and their parents the privacy a minor
is given according to federal and state laws, but in some cases doctors fail to do so. This results
in the misunderstanding of minor s privacy rights, which can lead to the adolescent patient not
disclosing significant information, and the parents assuming they have the right to all of their
child s medical records. Because of this, it is important for adolescents and their parents to
understand the nature of confidentiality in health care. Many people are unsure of the rights
granted to minors because of the laws in place, or the lack of laws in place. In fact there are
laws, such as the Privacy Act of 1988 that could be a reason people are confused about the rights
minors have to confidentiality. This act is directly described in a professional practice article
when Bird (2007), stated that an adolescent s health information can be released to a guardian, but
in circumstances where a minor is capable of making their own medical decisions, they should be
allowed to do so (p. 655). Bird further explained that If an adolescent is able to consent to their own
medical treatment, then they are

The Role Of The Perfect Utopian Society In George Orwell s...
What makes a good life for individuals and what constitutes the perfect utopian society? These
are important questions for all humans living in the modern world and the answers to these
questions radically affect the way that we view how power should be used. In George Orwell s
Animal Farm, we see the animals come out from under Mr Jones power, they try to make the
perfect world but fail because someone is always going to have the strength or willpower to go one
step further than you can. In The Truman Show, directed by Peter Weir, we see Christof try to create
his idea of the perfect world so that at least one person, Truman Burbank, might be able to live a
good life. Both texts suggest that the good life is determined by the degree of freedom that they
have to choose their own destiny and this then affects what the perfect society looks like because
the perfect society would involve ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to live out what they
consider to be a good life. The problem with trying to create a perfect society is that there will
always be someone who uses their power to control others for the bad, not the good.
The capacity for an individual to live a good life is dependent upon the degree of freedom that they
have to choose their own destiny. In The Truman Show, Weir suggests that without freedom one
cannot be truly happy. Through Truman s life Christof stopped him from experiencing different
events throughout his life, he messed with Truman s emotions. In

Leadership And Effective Leadership For Learning
Schools must meet the challenges of a changing educational climate and effective leadership is
crucial in helping to guide the whole school community through the potentially treacherous waters
of change. This assignment will delve into the complexity of leadership and will emphasize that
whilst leaders can attempt to create conditions to help schools improve, they are not solely
responsible for the outcome of the education process. Fullan (2001) posits that effective school
leadershiphas the ability to manage educational change by building strong relationships and
establishing a moral purpose. Therefore, the school leader has the orchestral role of subtly creating
the conditions necessary for pupils and staff to thrive. This assignment will focus primarily on three
of the preconditions for effective Leadership for Learning, mentioned with the assignment title: the
role of shared leadership, explicit conversations and the creation of settings, mindsets, and strategies
conducive to learning. The writer feels, that effective leaders can transform the idea of mutual
accountability into moral accountability . Therefore this section can be interwoven within each of
these three strands of Leadership for Learning mentioned; in a sense mutual or moral accountability
could be interpreted as a by product of effective leadership.
Shared leadership.

Entering into the Louvre entrance, I can t help but feel in awe of the museum. Walking up to the
counter, I smile politely, because momma always taught me to be to be polite, and I happily

morning, untouched and wonderful. I am staring at the most extraordinary statues and figures the
naked eye has ever had the pleasure of seeing. No matter my vision problems, there is without a
shadow of a doubt I am seeing things clearly for the first time. Before me is standing statues of
warriors, death, and life. The stark white of the figures makes any evil become instantly pure. I

Continental Airlines began service in 1934 as Varney Speed Lines, named after one of its initial
owners, Walter T. Varney operating out of El Paso, Texas and extending through Las Vegas,
Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico to Pueblo, Colorado. The airline started with Lockheed

Most agreements permit airlines to fly from their home country to designated airports in the other
country: some also extend the freedom to provide continuing service to a third country, or to
another destination in the other country while carrying passengers from overseas. In the 1990s,
open skies agreements became more common. These agreements take many of these regulatory
powers from state governments and open up international routes to further competition. Open skies
agreements have met some criticism, particularly within the European Union, whose airlines would
be at a comparative disadvantage with the United States because of cabotage restrictions.

Consumer-Brand Relationships
CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION
Background
In the present day, relationship marketing is a popular concept in marketing research and practice
(Wang and Head, 2005).
Morgan and Hunt (1994) define relationship marketing as all marketing activities directed towards
establishing, developing and maintaining relational exchanges.
The goal of relationship marketing is to increase customer loyalty. Research proves the premise
that loyal customers are actually more profitable. Loyal customers are less costly to serve, are
usually wiling to pay more for brand choices than non loyal customers, and act as word of mouth
marketers for the company (Reinartz and Kumar, 2002).

Though Blanche doesn t necessarily want Stanley, she still feeds off the attention given to her.
Though what Blanche does may be immoral, there is evidence of her wanting to be clean and
virtuous. Almost anytime Blanche s clothes are described, they are white, an innocent color. The
reader can see that Blanche wants to be the virtuous person she often pretends to be.
It is clear that Blanche DuBois is willing to do what she believes is necessary to get what she
wants. This often includes deceit. She feels that she needs to lie about herself in order to seem
more appealing. Because Blanche is so afraid of aging, she keeps her age to herself. While she is
dating Mitch, she often deceives him by never letting him see her in bright light in order to
conceal her faded looks. When she comes to New Orleans, Blanche does not tell her sister that
she was fired from her job; she says that she is merely taking a vacation from the job. She says
this in order to keep up the fake persona she holds. Blanche is very open about her lies with her
sister. I know I fib a good deal. After all, a woman s charm is fifty per cent illusion, but when a
thing is important I tell the truth. (69) This shows that Blanche s lifelong choice of avoiding harsh
realities leads to her breakdown. With all of the lies and deceit Blanche tells, she is living an unreal
existence.

to produce a V type, water cooled, eight cylinder engine, and the first to use a thermostat control
cooling system (1914). As if this were not enough, GM consolidated all GM truck production
(GMC) in Pontiac, Michigan (1915), and purchased Chevrolet Motor Company only five years
later. The buying of automobile companies in GM s early days would soon expand to include
more GM purchases and agreements, new lines of parts and gear, and an unprecedented move, on
the part of GM executives, to become some of the biggest stockholders in the company. Aligning
interests of management with interests of stockholders, GM set a precedent for making leadership
accountable in a business where the goal was to provide a car for every purse and purpose
(www.gm.com/company/corp_info/history/gmhis1910.html). Purpose/Mission While the initial
mission of GM was to provide a car for everyone and everything, its current mission statement is
more reflective of the modern times in which the company is operating and the demands that come
to a company as a result. Rick Wagoner, Chairman and CEO of GM recently stated: As it has for
nearly a century, General Motors plays an important role in the lives of countless people around the
world, in the global economy, and in the auto industry. Against an ever more competitive and
challenging backdrop, GM remains committed to leading not only from a business standpoint, but
economically, socially and environmentally as well.

Explain What The Word Taking Ownership Of Learning Means...
. Explain what the phrase taking ownership of your learning means to you.
My perspective about take ownership of your learning is, I think ownership here is a metaphor
refers to your responsibility towards your learning like if you own it. We all caring about our
possessions, for example; if I rented a car It s not my responsibility to find spare parts or to looking
for a reputable garage for service. But if I own the car, then no doubt, all maintains will be my
responsibility. From that point of view take ownership of your learning means, care about and be
responsible for your learning as one of your possessions. Or stop to be just receiver and start to be a
learner that seeking for knowledge and looking after for what have learned. ... Show more content

Are you self motivated to learn and understand; not only driven by grades or external praise?
I think my answer is, yes, I m self motivated to learn and understand. Due to my work, as a driver,

Do you push yourself to think deeper about issues and draw connections to your personal,

Sometimes I try to think deeper about issues, particularly, in my personal and professional lives.
But about the academic I m not sure. Because of the lack of my English s vocabularies and phrases.
Which, many times, force me to short cut my thoughts.

Public Speaking Speech
What aspects does The Art of Public Speaking by Dale Carnegie (1915) make the textbook stand
out and provide a thorough yet specific understanding when presenting a speech? Carnegie exploits
a variety of efficiency in his following chapters three, four, five, seven providing real life examples,
metaphors, and advice.
The speaker that fires his force and emphasis at random into a sentence will not get results.
(Carnegie Ch. 3, 13) Chapter three, named EFFICIENCY THROUGH EMPHASIS AND
SUBORDINATION , explains that one should not sporadically highlight a word(s) simply because
it sounds important but to convey contrasts and relations. The idea of comparing two words or
phrases purposely will provide a smooth and greater transition, engaging the audience to be
possibly more empathic. (Carnegie Ch. 3, 13) Also when in written form, the best way to represent
a change in a word s denotation is changing the form such that MOUNTAIN PEAK
WORDS...represent the big, important ideas. (Carnegie Ch.3, 13) A great example shown is
when a reporter is told to not write if she or he sees a dog biting a man but if a man is biting a
dog, such that she or he should not waste valuable time on the grass around the tree. (Carnegie Ch.
3, 14) Not only a visual aids emphasis, but also that act of pronouncing the word(s) differently from
the rest will contribute to its significance; some mistaken that yelling is the way; however, it is
completely wrong, degrading control, intelligence, and

Literacy Analysis
Literary Analysis of Battle Royal I m writing an analysis of Battle Royal by Ralph Ellison. It is
told from the first person point of view. This is a story about a young African American named
Ralph Ellison, who is trying to be accepted by white society. He is offered the opportunity to read
his speech he had written for his graduation at a gathering of the town s leading white citizens
(p.286). Ralph Ellison is told that he should partake in the Battle Royal before giving his speech as
part of the entertainment. The Battle Royal is a fight in which several young African Americanboys
are blindfolded, given boxing gloves, and forced to fight each other until one person is left
standing in a boxing arena. There are no time... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To top it off they blind fold all of the boys just to make it more amusing. They humiliate the boys
by making them watch a nude woman dance before the fight. And then they force them to pick up
fake coins off of an electrified rug. Shocking them and getting enjoyment from their pain. This is a
very racist story. But unfortunately it truly reflects on how these individuals were treated during
this time. The big shots only want to be controlling racists, and get enjoyment from this. They will
not accept any behavior from the African Americans except submission. The idea of social
equality between them and the African Americans is quite appalling for them (p.297). They are
strictly set against this and will probably do what ever it takes to prevent this from happening. I
liked the ambition of Ralph, his determination to make sure that he is heard. He really feels as
though his speech will make a huge impact for his people in his community. He is trying to become
accepted into a society that does not want to accept him or his people. I agree with Paula Caudle,
Naomi Lancaster, and Andy Stamper Students, University of North Carolina at Pembroke (http:/
/www.uncp.edu/home/canada/work/allam/1914 /lit/ellison.htm) in their analysis of the blindfold in
the story. They stated that the blindfold symbolizes man s inability to see who he is within society

Introduction. Sicko Is An American Made Documentary That
INTRODUCTION
Sicko is an American made documentary that was released in 2007. This documentary focused on
the health care system in United States. Filmmaker, Michael Moore, visited different parts of the
United States and interviewed people about their experiences with the healthcare system and health
insurance. While it is obvious that people without health insurance are subjected to pay higher
medical rates, the film also shows that even people with health insurance, are unable to pay their
medical bills. This is due to the fact that certain procedures, medication, etc. are not covered by
their insurance. Some people often go to the extremes of traveling to Canada to receive free care.
A part from visiting Canada, Michael Moore visited ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As mentioned earlier, for the millions of other Americans that are insured with a healthcare plan,
they still struggle to pay for urgent care. For example, in Sicko a woman had a decent healthcare
plan that would provide coverage for her family. Her husband, Tracy became ill with cancer. His
doctors wanted to try different medications to see if it would help him. The insurance company
denied to pay for his medication due to experimental reasons. Tracy s doctors then suggested to do
a bone marrow transplant. The doctor mentioned that this treatment had been successful on other
patients. Once again the insurance company denied to pay for Tracy s treatment. Ultimately, Tracy
passed away due to lack of treatment. This is the reality of many sick Americans. They are
focused to delay important medical procedures/medication because they cannot afford the cost.
Insurance companies try to find ways out of paying for their customer s insurance. They use
excuses such as experimental reasons as a means of denying to pay for treatments or they state that
the customer had a pre existing condition which they do not cover. Sicko depicted that the more
denials a health insurance company issues, the more money the company saves. In the
documentary Michael Moore visits Canada to examine how health care/insurance differs from the
United States. People receive quality care and do not have to pay for health treatments in Canada.
Canada operates as on a single

Essay On The Stolen Generation
The Stolen Generations:
A Dreadful Time in Australia Why would a government remove over 100,000 children just because
of their race and heritage? During 1910 to 1971, the government of Australia did this now known
as, The Stolen Generations of Australia which led to rough times for many families across the
whole continent (McArthy 1). There was no certain right for them to make the entire country suffer
in pain for many years. The government removed the kids from their homes, and they wouldn t see
their families for a long time. The Australian government wanted to abolish the Aborigine culture
by lying to the children, separating families away from each other, however they are very
apologetic for their actions. In the early to late 1900 s, the Australian government wanted to get rid
of the Aborigine culture. They did not want their customs and traditions to live on anymore, so they

sorry for all of the pain they caused many families. The country as a whole has recently
recognized that families suffered an extreme amount of of PAIN and now they can understand
what they have done (Cuthbert, Denise 12). The Aborigine children that were taken had a very
traumatic and depressing childhood filled with a lot of neglect (Graf 1). Whenever they finally
realized it was about time to apologize was a big step for Australia, because it had just become a
whole strain for everyone. For a government to keep these kind of behaviors going on as long as
they did, was not the right thing to do to millions of people. It was a good thing that the country
apologized for their wrong behaviors and they have now explained to everyone what they have
done and why they did it. Overall an apology was needed for a very long time but was not given

For the Sake of Our Planet, Tourism Should Be...
The world is huge and mysterious, full of wonders and surprises, and humans are ever inquisitive
by nature. The need for human to consistently travel and quench their curiousity through new
discoveries had been evident since early civilization. Like those myths and legends of Gulliver s
Travels to appease the curiousity of people in the pastof the vast , unknwon Eart, to the real history
and conquers of Marco Popl, humans have never find it enough to stop unreveling the wonders of
nature and Earth to cease travelling. Especially with the advancement of and improvement of

The environment may be destroyed in the process of building these infrastructures, like the clearing
of lands for not only the hotels and shops, but also for better accessibility and transport system. This
may eventually lead to overcrowding of the tourist spot. Following are the air and noise pollution,
unavoidable when overpopulation occurs. This further degrades the environment.
Therefore tourism should be discouraged as it can cause great harm to the environment of that
particular tourist spot with the influx followed by the tourism industry.
Also the travelling in modern modes of transports like air palnes and various land transports
releases large amount of carbon gases that can result in global temperature rise. And of course the
rise in carbon emmision is a major influece from the rise in tourism as many prefer the mode of
transport by air. The advancemnet of transporation technology by air has not only hasten travelling
time, but as thismode of transport became more common, it became cheaper as well. Many budget
airline companies are springing out, making travelling more affordable and more popular. However
12% of the world s carbon emmision is contributed by aviation.
Although there are many other industries and activities, like factories wastes, which produce more
carbon emmision than air travel alone, discouraging tourism (along with other sectors) can help cut
down on the carbon emmision.
But on the other hand, as more people travel due to their

Although coming up with solution to those problems are challenging, at least I learned how to
address them. Since I understand the causes and consequences of social problems, I am now
comfortable to discuss my points of view with another individual in an educated discussion.
Furthermore, understanding the causes and consequences has also allowed me to understand that
not everybody has the same points of view. We can all go through the same situation, but we all
experience it differently, and precisely that experience is what shapes our perceptions of things.
Thus, my empathy increased greatly, because when my perception gets challenged, I understand the
the other person has experienced a situation differently than mine. Likewise, the topic discussed
in class challenged the stereotypes I had of situations or even other people. For example, I
stereotyped the poor as lazy or as people who did not tried to get out of poverty. However, after
material discussed in class I mainly understood that being poor was not even their choice; several
inherit being poor from their parents. I understood that it is not in their power to change their
economic situation, but it relies on the institutions that do not allow them to earn better wages, or
do not allow them to have the same opportunities as others. My stereotypes were challenged with
every social problem discussed in class. I think that s what I enjoyed the

Pro Minimum Wage
People all across America believe that minimum wage is a good thing and helps people without an
education have a normal life, however others believe it is causing poverty and homelessness among
the citizens. Minimum wage was made to provide enough money to live just above the national
poverty line. But over the years the cost of living has increased while the minimum wage hasn t.
Today, the national minimum wage is $7.25, which is less powerful than the minimum wage was in
1968. This is because the minimum wage was $1.60 per hour, which seems low but back then $1.60
was enough to support a three person family, whereas today the minimum wage can barely support
one person. All throughout the U.S., workers have been fighting for a higher minimum... Show

workers are making money, businesses and companies will strive and flourish from a fair

I Had Never Even Heard Of Discourses
When I first came to RIT, I had never even heard of discourses before, let alone write an entire
essay on it in roughly a week. I suppose then that this could be considered a separate discourse
itself. When I was in high school, our teachers had us focusing on completing essays solely based
on discovering the author s purpose and using literary elements to support our thesis statements.
There it did not matter what our background was; we had to get through the work and were almost
required to write it to a perfect state, otherwise it would not be considered as collegematerial. Upon
arriving at college, the classwork attitudes changed drastically. Here near perfectionism was not
stressed and the backgrounds of students were taken into consideration for classes. With so many
discourses present it a classroom, one would think that it would be difficult to accommodate
everyone, but for me, it is a discoursethat is surprisingly easier to adjust to. Instead of having
everyone adjust to one specific discourse, everyone is permitted to their own discourses and
contribute to the community. Similarly, Williams explains how these discourses impact conflicts
that could arise between students and teachers in the academic classroom. In Home and Away: The
tensions of community, literacy, and identity, Bronwyn T. Williams argues to researchers and
teachers so that they understand that because everyone comes from different backgrounds. They all
will not learn the same way and have

What Does My Papa s Waltz Mean
When you read My Papa s Waltz, you might think it is about a boy and his father having fun just
before bedtime. However, if you look further into the words you see much more. Considering the
text is all one needs to discover the true meaning of this poem. The words will get into your soul
and bring sorrow and anger to the surface. The word whiskey (line 1) shows the father is a
drinking man, and the word dizzy (line 2) implies the amount of whiskey his father consumes
sickens the boy. The boy is young and fragile which plays in the lines of the poem death (line 3),
battered (line 10), beat (line 13), and caked hard (line 14), are all negative hidden meanings. The
word countenance (line 7) parallels the mother s stern disapproval. Hung (line 3) is past tense
reflecting on an earlier time. Understanding the words is the first step in analyzing the poem....

Rhythm as in lines one through four, and seven through eight, are seen throughout the poem.
Whiskey, waltzing, was flows, contrasting to the negativity of the first verse. The image of the
father beating time on the boy s head with the palm of his hand sounds detrimental. It portrays the
father as having the utmost power over the boy, he grabs his wrist instead of holding his hands,
showing the control the father has. The boy hung on like death (line 3), is showing he hung on to
save his life. Verses rhyme sounds unnatural, giving the poem an uncomfortable feeling. The verses
flow like a dance except for a few words that sound off. These examples all give insight to the

Deaf Education During The 1900 s
The rich history of American Deaf culture in conjunction withlanguage displays the determination
along with the brilliance of these people. Though the hearing world had called them sin, denounced
them as dumb, these people rose up against their oppressors, making a new world for themselves.
Deaf people have always existed, as did discrimination towards deaf people. As far back as 384
322 BCE, people had been saying that deaf people could not learn. Due to Deaf people being seen
as inferior, we hardly have any documented history on them before the early 1500 s. Patient parents
of Deaf children needed to have a way to communicate with their young, through this need the rise
of Deaf education began. Geronimo Cardano, a mathematician, created ... Show more content on

The Wife s Lament Analysis
What is exile? Exile is the action of one being kicked out of their home or native land, usually as a
punishment. According to Anglo Saxons, all exile is a model of the banishment of humankind
from its rightful place in Heaven. Exile is a pretty frequent theme of Anglo Saxon literature by
symbolizing this in many different scenarios and using different characters and places. Since the
religionof christianitywas so important to the Anglo Saxons, this was a scary thing for many of
them to find in their literature. After one examines the lyrics in The Seafarer, The Wanderer, and
The Wife s Lament, one will notice that exile is included in all three of these Anglo Saxon stories.
In each of these stories, the theme of exile is prominently emphasized through at least one detail.
For example, in the stories The Seafarer and The Wanderer, the theme of exile is demonstrated and
emphasized through the use of water. The narrators in these stories are on sea voyages and water is
used to represent their separation, or exile, from their original home. In the story The Wife s
Lament, the theme of exile is demonstrated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The husband mysteriously left the wife one day without returning which caused the narrator s

Moreover, the narrator is left to continue suffering from her exile. My man s kinsmen began to
plot by darkened thought to divide us two so we most widely in the world s kingdom lived
wretchedly and I suffered longing (lns. 11 14). Since exile is supposed to represent the separation
of people from christianity according to Anglo Saxons, this story could have evoked sadness and
fear onto Anglo Saxons by being a sorrowful way to symbolize this

I Am A Leader Of The New Iphone
I am a colossally faithful Apple brand shopper. I got the iPod Nano around a week after it turned
out, the iPhone 3G the day it turned out, and now am a pleased owner of the new iPhone 6S .
Allowed I don t have a Mac or an iPad, regardless I surrender that the majority of Apple s items
are mechanically and tastefully better than the greater part of its adversaries (yes, even to the
cherished Wake Forest version ThinkPad). The traditional consumer decision process starts with
problem recognition. I would say, I totally skirted this underlying stage. Since I was taking after
web journals and declarations about the arrival of the most up to date era iPhonesince last year like
it was my employment, I realized that the iPhone would have been released on September 25th I
likewise realized that you would have the capacity to preorder it on September 12. Thus at 8am
on September 12, I preordered the fresh out of the plastic new iPhone 6S for $700 in addition to
some expense, and hence started the expectation until get day on October started. So glancing back
at my purchase, I never truly encountered a minute when I understood that I had an issue which
should have been tended to or a trigger that made me need the phone. I as of now had a phone (a
working Samsung as a substitution for my dead iPhone 5s), I basically recently concluded that I
needed the freshest and best innovation out there which the iPhone advertised.

The section of the report addressing the monetary impact of Amalgamated installing emission control equipment had been falsified. The numbers used in the report were over exaggerated in order to show that Amalgamated would suffer severely financially should this legislation be passed. Recommendation #1:Amalgamated has three mills in the community. These three mills and the corporate offices provide jobs to many of the 10,000 people of Northlake. The company is a major contributor to the economy of the community. The recommendation is for Amalgamated to be ethical and show corporate responsibility. No amount of money can be given for human life. The aboriginal community is suffering from the effects of emission waste from the previous competitor and from Amalgamated as well. Amalgamated should forego its own financial gain and do what is ethically right to clean up their waste so that it does not affect the community. The company has had the emissions problem for so long and it would only benefit them in the long run to do the right thing and stop the pollution now. Finding of Fact #2:Frank is being bullied, more specifically, being mobbed, by his vice president and the president of the company. When Jim McIntosh confronts Frank about publically disclosing the truth about the report, he is yelling and calling Frank stupid. Compounds such as retinol, retinal, retinoic acid, retinyl esters and other derivatives are considered under the group of retinoids. Retinoids are significantly considered to be the most prominent regulators of several essential biological functions. For instance, active derivative of retinol (metabolite of Vitamin A) such as retinoic acid (RA) plays a major role in vision, cell differentiation, tissue homeostasis, apoptosis, organogenesis, regulation of immune system and embryonic pattern formation(1). The N terminal region contains two domains (A /B) are designated as AF1 and they are the least conserved domains and highly variable in length which exhibit a ligand independent transactivation activity. So far, there is no three dimensional structure has been predicted for A/B domain. (9). Central region C possess DNA binding domain (DBD) which is said to be the most conserved region and possess similarity in their structure. DBD contains an important short motif known as P box which is responsible for direct DNA interaction and detection of specificity for DNA binding. DBD also possess additional sequences that are required for the homo or heterodimerization of nuclear receptors. A pair of zinc fingers present in domain C is critically responsible for DNA specific contacts and interaction. Domain D is the less conserved domain among nuclear receptors which acts as a flexible hinge in between two domains such as C (DBD) and E (LBD) domains. • 8. My Life Reflection Paper Literature and writing have had an affect on my life starting from my early childhood and continues to influence me as I end my 11th year of school. From children s pop up books to 500 page novels reading has always taken part in developing my life. From learning to write my name to using vigorous research and planning to construct a 7 page paper over the Scarlet Letterand the unfortunate events little Hester Prynneis forced to deal with, along with the thrilling task analyzing two juxtaposed literary works. Throughout my life writingand literature have helped to guide me in life and aides in my everyday life. In grades kindergarten through seventh I attended school at Piqua Catholic and more times than not was unsatisfactory in my writing and literature skills. I always seemed to be the kid that fell behind when reading a book or was constantly spelling words incorrectly. It was not that I did not care or never did my work, I tried but nothing ever clicked for me. Tutoring was brought up in chat among my parents but they hoped that it would click eventually. My mother acted as my own personal tutor at times. In preparation for spelling tests we would take a cookie sheet and cover it in shaving cream. After my mom gave me a word I would spell it out in the shaving cream. This helped me to visualize the words while incorporating some fun into studying. First grade was nightmare for me, My teacher, Mrs. Quarter had suggested to my parents that I be held back because I was so far behind compared to the other children in my class. At times we would read together in class, taking turns by going around the room. It was embarrassing when the book came to me and every other word I would stumble and need help with pronunciation. Although Mrs. Quarter suggested I be held back a year that was not what she wanted. At times she would stay after school with me to practice reading with me which greatly benefited me. With Mrs. Quarters help my reading and writing greatly improved and by the end of my second grade year I was on honor roll. As I grew older and transferred to Troy City Schools I felt that my classes had gotten easier, especially English. I excelled in English, I will credit my English teacher Mrs. ... He states that after attempting to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, he gets separated from his climbing group and finds himself in a small village, Korphe, located at the bottom of the Karakoram mountain range in northeastern Pakistan. Whilst being taken care of by the villagers after wandering for 84 days, a young girl approached him and asked him to build a school for them. He made a promise to do so and that became the start of the Central Asia Institute. Within Three Cups of Tea , Mortenson also claims to have been kidnapped by the Taliban whilst looking for a place to build a school. These men from the Taliban supposedly held him hostage for eight days until he promised to build schools in that same area. Reasons For The Government Intervention ECON1020 ASSIGNMENT 2 Question 1: Reasons for government intervention Governments only intervene in a market to correct for market failures, their objective to restore efficiency and increase economic well being of society. Market failure occurs when the market fails to allocate resources efficiently, the buyer seller cannot reach a socially optimal point. Traffic congestion is rivalrous in consumption because there is limited space on the road, however, the road has the ability to be over consumed thus making it a common resource, because one person s use of the good does not diminish other people s use of it. The issue of traffic congestion is a negative externality because when one person drives on the road, their presence reduces the speed of everyone else and thus increases the affected party s journey time. The graph below (figure 1) shows the demand and supply of roads with Qmarket showing the equilibrium that the forces of supply and demand have equalled. The private value is the drivers use of the roads when there is no traffic congestion e.g. non peak hour. However, because their presences are an negative externality. The demand curve shifts to the left and shown and the new demand curve is the social value, the supply and demand now have an equilibrium at Qopt. The social value is the private value externality. An ecotoxicology study was conduced where they examined the effects of commercial mosquito insecticide formulations and predation on the survival, growth, and development of a species of tadpoles (Pauley et. al 2015). They had to take into consideration environmental stressors like predation and temperature because that can change the lethality of the insecticide. They used three insecticide formulations: mosquito bits, mosquito dunks, and mosquito torpedoes. Mosquito dunks showed the biggest significance because they caused a decrease in tadpole survival when used with a predator. The predator was used as an environmental stressor that affected the lethality of the formulation. This caused the decrease in that tad pole species. The job of the airport is to provide the necessary amenities to the airlines, the passengers of the airlines and the necessary capacity to do so. In most cities the population and tourism industry is likely the determinant as to how big the airportis. Often with the bigger, busier and higher profile airports (i.e. Dubai, Sydney, JFK) the charges are more for the use of their terminals, taxiways, runways etc. It should be taken under consideration that there are many factors related to why there might be such a sizeable difference between different airports and the associated fees. One such example is an airport with current, or future plans of expansion. Often when an airport is expanding (i.e. building new terminals, or extending runways etc.) fees such as landing fees, or gate charges will increase. An example of this is Christchurch International airport, which has seen a steady increase in charges since 2012, when the new terminal development began, and since then the airport had continued to expand, including further gate additions, runway width expansions and greater parking capabilities. For a Jet aircraft departure, a fixed fee of $150 was in place in 2012, that number has since increased to $163 in 2016. The definition for this term is widely known in health care, but when it is applied to adolescents many people do not understand the basics. Doctors are responsible for informing adolescent patients and their parents the privacy a minor is given according to federal and state laws, but in some cases doctors fail to do so. This results in the misunderstanding of minor s privacy rights, which can lead to the adolescent patient not disclosing significant information, and the parents assuming they have the right to all of their child s medical records. These are important questions for all humans living in the modern world and the answers to these questions radically affect the way that we view how power should be used. In George Orwell s Animal Farm, we see the animals come out from under Mr Jones power, they try to make the perfect world but fail because someone is always going to have the strength or willpower to go one step further than you can. In The Truman Show, directed by Peter Weir, we see Christof try to create his idea of the perfect world so that at least one person, Truman Burbank, might be able to live a good life. Both texts suggest that the good life is determined by the degree of freedom that they have to choose their own destiny and this then affects what the perfect society looks like because the perfect society would involve ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to live out what they consider to be a good life. The problem with trying to create a perfect society is that there will always be someone who uses their power to control others for the bad, not the good. The capacity for an individual to live a good life is dependent upon the degree of freedom that they have to choose their own destiny. Public Speaking Speech What aspects does The Art of Public Speaking by Dale Carnegie (1915) make the textbook stand out and provide a thorough yet specific understanding when presenting a speech? Carnegie exploits a variety of efficiency in his following chapters three, four, five, seven providing real life examples, metaphors, and advice. The speaker that fires his force and emphasis at random into a sentence will not get results. (Carnegie Ch. 3, 13) Chapter three, named EFFICIENCY THROUGH EMPHASIS AND SUBORDINATION , explains that one should not sporadically highlight a word(s) simply because it sounds important but to convey contrasts and relations. The idea of comparing two words or phrases purposely will provide a smooth and greater transition, engaging the audience to be possibly more empathic. (Carnegie Ch. 3, 13) Also when in written form, the best way to represent a change in a word s denotation is changing the form such that MOUNTAIN PEAK WORDS...represent the big, important ideas. (Carnegie Ch.3, 13) A great example shown is when a reporter is told to not write if she or he sees a dog biting a man but if a man is biting a dog, such that she or he should not waste valuable time on the grass around the tree. The big shots only want to be controlling racists, and get enjoyment from this. They will not accept any behavior from the African Americans except submission. The idea of social equality between them and the African Americans is quite appalling for them (p.297). They are strictly set against this and will probably do what ever it takes to prevent this from happening. I liked the ambition of Ralph, his determination to make sure that he is heard. • 50. I Had Never Even Heard Of Discourses When I first came to RIT, I had never even heard of discourses before, let alone write an entire essay on it in roughly a week. I suppose then that this could be considered a separate discourse itself. When I was in high school, our teachers had us focusing on completing essays solely based on discovering the author s purpose and using literary elements to support our thesis statements. There it did not matter what our background was; we had to get through the work and were almost required to write it to a perfect state, otherwise it would not be considered as collegematerial. Upon arriving at college, the classwork attitudes changed drastically. Here near perfectionism was not stressed and the backgrounds of students were taken into consideration for classes. With so many discourses present it a classroom, one would think that it would be difficult to accommodate everyone, but for me, it is a discoursethat is surprisingly easier to adjust to. Instead of having everyone adjust to one specific discourse, everyone is permitted to their own discourses and contribute to the community. Similarly, Williams explains how these discourses impact conflicts that could arise between students and teachers in the academic classroom. In Home and Away: The tensions of community, literacy, and identity, Bronwyn T. Williams argues to researchers and teachers so that they understand that because everyone comes from different backgrounds. They all will not learn the same way and have ...
