Maxine Hong Kingston By Maxine Kong
Maxine Hong Kingston prides herself on her personal strength and character, as well as the ability she
developed to assert herself into a culture that is not accepting of her differences. As the daughter of
Chinese immigrants living in the US, she was tasked with living a double life, straddling the line
between her traditional Chinese upbringing and the environment outside of her home in 1960 s
California. She was in many ways a perfectly normal and intelligent child. Through her writing she is
able to describe complex interactions from her childhood, detailing her reasoning and understanding
of the world. Despite this cleverness and flexibility, she begins her account by describing herself as
voiceless, seemingly dumb, and explains how it was that she failed kindergarten. Through this story
we get a view of how an intelligent young person might experience difficulties caused by cultural
differences, a unique perspective from a first generation American. In this excerpt from Woman
Warrior, Kingston recounts her experiences as a young person without a voice. Her struggle is
deepened by the culturally engrained xenophobia and misogyny that existed in her diverse
neighborhood, as well as pressures and extreme obstacles thrown at her by her own mother. The child
whom Kingston describes goes through continuous growth in finding her own identity and strength in
character, but it is clear that she still carries the fear and pain created by her uniquely difficult

Analysis Of Scrappy Little Nobody
Memoir 1 Anna Kendrick I Remember Every Slight: You ve Been Warned and Mike and Anna Take
New York , are two excerpts from the book Scrappy Little Nobody, by Anna Kendrick. Kendrick uses
detailed stories to recreate a picture of her childhood, including memories of sleepovers, school bullies
, and bus trips to New York. Anna Kendrick also mentions people that were part of her life, such as her
parents sending her and her brother to New York for an audition, and Tori the bully who tried to steal
all of her friends. Kendrick expresses her anger when Tori frames her for insulting her friends, and
shares about the excitement she felt when she landed her first acting job. All of this being told from a
first person point of view. Anna Kendrick uses idioms and superlative word choice along with an
overall humourous tone. Figurative language that was used included, I shouldn t get too excited. I
shouldn t count my chickens. , and the metaphor that caught my eye was when she compared
underneath the slide on the playground to a Victorian asylum. One noteworthy phrase was It became
less about alleged betrayal and more about their aversion to hyperactive little weirdos. Kendrick
connects the reader to the story when she mentions Boy Meets World and Home Alone. Memoir 2

Heart Pathophysiology
The function of the heart is to pump blood around the body. It is a hollow muscle and can be found
between the lungs in the mediastinum and behind the sternum and between the second and sixth ribs.
It is the size of a fist and has four chambers. The upper chambers are the left and right atria, with the
bottom chambers the left and right ventricles. The heart consists of several layers: the pericardium
(outer protective covering of fibrous tissue), the epicardium (made up of epithelial cells and secretes
serum which prevents the layers rubbing), the myocardium (the muscular wall of the heart and forms a
septum which separates the right and left side of the heart.
The septum also contains the sino atrial atrioventricular nodes, which is a type ... Show more content

There are four valves in the heart that stop the blood from flowing in the wrong direction.
These are the tricuspid, pulmonary, mitral and aortic valves. The SA node (sino atrial node) stimulates
the atrium to contract forcing blood through the valves to the ventricles. The AV
(atrioventricular) node then stimulates the ventricles to contract which pumps blood out of the heart.
The right ventricle pumping blood to the lungs, and the left ventricle pumping blood to the body.
There are three types of circulation of the blood. These are pulmonary, systemic and portal circulation.
Pulmonary circulation is where the blood is pumped to the lungs. It arrives deoxygenated from the
superior and inferior vena cava into the right atrium. It then is pumped through the tricuspid valve into
the right ventricle. The blood then leaves through the pulmonary valve into the pulmonary artery
where it splits into the left and right pulmonary arteries and goes into the lungs and is re oxygenated.
The oxygenated blood returns from the lungs by the pulmonary veins and

Comparing The Representation Of Women s The Yellow...
Compare the representation of women in Gilman s The yellow wallpaper and Austen s pride and
prejudice . To what extent do you agree with the view that Gilman presents conventional patriarchal
expectations of women, more critically than Austen.
Both Austen and Gilman breakthrough the conformity of femininity at a time of rising feminism in a
bid to encourage the female viewpoint which was put down or rather shunned to be less valuable by
the society they lived in. Gilman however presents it in a more peculiar and violent way in making her
character fall into sanity to bring across women s right of voice. One could argue Austen, although
subtly hinting at the affects or mocking patriarchy, does not seem to have as much of an impact or
focus on exploring the harsh conventional expectations women faced and the effect it had on
restraining their creative conscience.
Both authors focus on the unequal status of women within marriage. Gilman explores, Women s
obligation to remain in the domestic sphere. She argues that it steals them of the expression of their
full powers of creativity and intelligence. Her character jane, mocks the rational masculine
explanation in not believing in faith but rather figures in comparison Elizabeth s reading in pride and
prejudice allows her to explore her self identity. Both Austen and Gilman ironically mock the social
convention of men s rationality being above women s creativity. However, one could argue that in all

Eardrum Perforation
Eardrum Perforation
An eardrum perforation is a puncture or tear in the eardrum. This is also called a ruptured eardrum.
The eardrum is a thin, round tissue inside your ear that separates the ear canal from the middle ear.
This is the tissue that detects sound and enables you to hear. An eardrum perforation can cause
discomfort and hearing loss. In most cases, the eardrum will heal without treatment and with little or
no permanent hearing loss.
CAUSES
Sudden pressure changes that happen in situations such as scuba diving or flying in an airplane.
Foreign objects in the ear.
Inserting a cotton tipped swab or any blunt object in the ear.
Loud noise.
Trauma to the ear.
Attempting to remove an object from the ear.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
Hearing loss.
Ear pain.
Ringing in the ears.
... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If the eardrum does not heal, your health care provider may recommend a procedure to place a patch
over the eardrum or surgery to repair the eardrum.
HOME CARE INSTRUCTIONS
Keep your ear dry. This will improve healing. Do not submerge your head under water until healing is
complete. Do not swim or dive until your health care provider approves. While bathing or showering,
protect the ear by using a waterproof earplug or by placing a piece of cotton covered with petroleum
jelly in the outer ear canal.
Take medicines only as directed by your health care provider.
Blow your nose gently, or avoid blowing it if possible. Forceful blowing increases the pressure in the
middle ear. This may cause further injury or may delay healing.
Resume normal activities when the perforation has healed. Your health care provider can let you know
when this has occurred.
Talk to your health care provider before flying on an airplane. Air travel is generally allowed with a
perforated eardrum.
Keep all follow up visits as directed by your health care provider. This is

Life Cycle Events In Greek Orthodoxy
Life Cycle Events of Greek Orthodoxy
College is a melting pot of many cultures from around the world. I am lucky enough to live with
someone who is comes from a very different religion than me: my roommate Lindsay Andrews. While
I come from a reformed Jewish family, hers is Greek Orthodox. I spoke to Lindsey about the four
major life cycle events of the Greek Orthodox Church, the first of which is birth. Between the ages of
three and nine months, Greek Orthodox infants are baptized. This means that the infant is dipped in
water, representing how Christ was also baptized. The ceremony takes place in the cathedral, with
family and church members present. The priest conducts the ceremony, and parents and godparents of
the child participate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, participants in the ceremony must be Greek Orthodox. There are also specific rules about
who can be godparents, as they are tasked with the spiritual upbringing of the infant. Other than
having to be pious members of the Greek Orthodoxy, they also cannot be minors, mentally challenged
persons, clergy, the biological parents of the child, or someone ignorant of the faith (Wilson). The
baby is dressed in a special outfit for the baptism. Lindsay said hers was long and white (Andrews). At
the ceremony, the child is also given a baptismal name. If they already have the name of a Greek saint
(such as Paul), it remains the same. But if it is not, then they are given an additional Greek Orthodox
name. For example, Lindsay said, my name is Lindsay, which is Scottish, and so my baptismal name
is Nicoletta, which is based off my middle name Nicole (Andrews). After the ceremony there is a
celebration, but it does not contain particular foods. In the days following the

Subversion of Class and Gender Roles in Jane Austen s...
Subversion of Class and Gender Roles in Jane Austen s Persuasion
In Jane Austen s Persuasion, Mrs. Croft makes but few appearances and delivers little dialogue.
Nevertheless, Austen gives her significant narrative and thematic importance. Mrs. Croft provides a
foil for several of the Elliots, while developing a commonality with the frequently ostracized Anne.
This bond between Mrs. Croft and Austen s heroine valorizes Mrs. Croft s radical views concerning
feminism and marriage. Beyond signifying a paradigm shift in such social morals, though, the roles of
Admiral and Mrs. Croft allow Austen to subvert the dominant upper class culture. By exhibiting
superior but genuine manners, by demonstrating the complacency ... Show more content on

Because of this clear characterization of Mary, when we hear of Mrs. Croft s mild sea sickness, we
admire her fortitude while recognising Mary s sacrifice.
Mrs. Croft thus differentiates herself from Sir Walter, Elizabeth and Mary. She also redefines
femininity among these acquaintances. Although not conventionally pretty, neither tall nor fat (34),
she has bright dark eyes, good teeth, and altogether an agreeable face (34). According to Anne, then,
an unconventional woman can still be attractive. Furthermore, to describe her weather beaten
complexion (34), Anne gently describes how Mrs. Croft [seems] to have lived some years longer in
the world than her real eight and thirty (35). The emphasis on living in the world, instead of on
aesthetic descriptions like aged or wrinkled, indicates that Anne, (and therefore Austen), values
experience and intellect, more than physical beauty.
Similarly, Mrs. Croft defies conventional notions of domesticity as the female realm. Mr. Shepherd
reveals that, while considering leasing Kellynch Hall, Mrs. Croft asked more questions about the
house, and terms, and taxes, than the Admiral himself (17). Thus, Mrs. Croft manages perfectly well
in financial affairs. Furthermore, Mrs. Croft does not exhibit the female delicacy, as does Elizabeth,
who relies utterly

William Shakespeare s The Restoration Period
Throughout history there have different styles of comedy that inherit different aspects of society
during that time. During the Restoration period, there is one author who stands out from the rest and is
known as the father of comedy of manners and that author is Molliere. One of his most notable pieces
of work was the Misanthrope; thats core principles are based on the comedy of manners. The
fundamentals of the comedy of manners often have a multiple consistencies that are true to most plays
written during that time. It s sole purpose is to get a satirical perspective at the life, manners and social
aspect of the upper class and aristocrats. Itt is considered high comedy due to the fact that it creates a
critical perspective of the life of the upper classes, unlike low comedy which serves no other purpose
than to create laughter. Plays which use comedy of manners often poke fun at the character s outlooks
on life, their manners toward each other and their view toward lower social classes. In general the
characters of plays/books during this time have very generic roles such as the fool, hypocrite, the
jealous lover, ect... Additionally the plots of these plays usually are surrounding a complicated love
situation that puts a few characters in conflict with each other. These principles are true to plays
written during that time, especially Moliere s Misanthrope which represent the core beliefs of the
comedy of manners. The main characters in the Misanthrope embody the main

What Conditions That Lead To Guerrilla Warfare And...
1. What are the conditions that lead to guerrilla warfare and distinguishes revolutionary guerrilla
warfare from historical guerrilla warfare? There are several conditions that lead a body of people
within a state to the point of guerrilla warfare. Such factors can be found from an example of the
policy used for the revolution of the Chinese people including: 1) Arousing and organizing people. 2)
Achieving internal unification politically. 3) Establishing bases. 4) Equipping forces. 5) Recovering
national strength. 6) Destroying enemy s national strength. 7) Regaining lost territories (pg. 530). In
addition, guerrilla warfare must be included not only in the militaristic atmosphere, but also in the
political atmosphere. Otherwise, according to Tse Tung, the general population will lose confidence in
the system and it will fail. Revolutionary guerilla warfare differs from historical guerrilla ... Show

What do you think are differences and similarities between the type of guerrilla described by Mao and
insurgents that have fought the U.S. in Iraq and Afghanistan? The differences between the type of
guerrilla warfare described by Mao Tse Tung and the insurgents that have fought the U.S. in the
middle east can be found on page 532. The insurgents have not followed or carried out the interests of
the whole people within the states listed. The Shia make up only a small percentage of the Muslim
population, however, they carry out most of the terrorist style attacks on the general population.
Therefore, the general mass is not satisfied and thus continues to go against the Shia population. On
the other hand, some similarities include small unit leadership and tactics. Most of the terrorist style
attacks originate from small rings within a terrorist cell much like the small guerrilla units of the Reds
from China. In conclusion, guerrilla warfare must be a collaborative effort from the general population
of a state and it must include both political and militaristic

The Effect Of Different Amounts Of Vinegar
Introduction + Research Question
The goal of this lab was to determine the effects of different amounts of Vinegar on the temperature in
the reaction NaHCO3 + HC2H3O2 → NaC2H3O2 + H2O + CO2.
My lab partner and I researched and experimented with the temperature after this reaction because we
were intrigued by the solution seeming colder in the demonstration during class. We wondered why
and how a reaction can yield decreasing temperatures. We also wondered how vinegar would affect
the temperature change caused by the reaction. This lead to our experiment to investigate the
relationship between the amount of vinegar in the reaction and the temperature of the solution 40s
after the reaction commences.
The Hypothesis
If the amount of vinegar is increased then the temperature of the solution will drop until it stabilizes at
a certain point. The dependent variable in this experiment (the temperature) will stay the exact same
without any vinegar being added because of the lack of reaction. If more vinegar is added I believe the
temperature will continue to get colder until a certain point where the temperature will stabilize.
Theory/ Background Information/Abstract.
I believe my hypothesis will be true because from my research I have found that the reaction between
baking soda and vinegar is an endothermic reaction. Endothermic reactions are reactions that require
heat to be initiated. This need for heat in turn causes a drop in temperature once the reaction occurs
because the

U.s. Foreign Policy History
The course of U.S. foreign policy history can be understood through watersheds, or critical points.
These points can serve as dividing lines that illuminate shifts in policy and opinion. However, thinking
of this history in terms of critical moments or turning points can simplify the complex actors,
sentiments and tendencies that create and influence foreign policy. These critical points are not
necessarily the sole cause of massive shifts in policy, but often add impetus to pre existing tendencies.
Nonetheless, watersheds can help the public digest patterns in foreign policy, playing an important
role in how American s perceive their role in the world. According to Brzezinski, America s
relationship with the world has been characterized by cycles of extroversion and introversion , or
involvement and isolationism. Throughout the nation s history, Americans have witnessed and
influenced many shifts or turns in this cycle, caused, exacerbated or illuminated by several critical
events. Through this lens, the Spanish American War, Pearl Harbor, the Vietnam War and 9/11 are
critical points that added the impetus to shift the cycle of U.S. foreign policy in the other direction.
The Spanish American war paved the way for American Imperialism, illuminating a shift towards
interventionist policies. Emerging from post WWI isolationism, the attack on Pearl Harbor created an
immediate national consensus, realigning foreign policy towards international involvement and

Slavery In The Nineteenth Century
As many people visited the United States in the nineteenth century, they were grateful they did not
live where slavery existed. People learned about the Peculiar Institution by other white writers, never
truly knowing what the slaves thought. What did the slaves experience under bondage and what was
their image about slavery? The slaves experienced a variety of harmful acts from the whites and they
felt robbed and horrified by the whites actions. For example, slave families were split apart by
different means by their masters. For another example, the slaves were forbidden to be educated and
told to be obedient. Also, they were not allowed to pray, but they took comfort in thinking that whites
and blacks were equal. In addition, slaves rebelled ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

2 Aminoanthraquinone Synthesis Lab Report
SPECTRAL ANALYSIS OF AMTPAA The amine group of 2 Aminoanthraquinone undergoes Schiff
condensation with carbonyl group of 4 (N,N Diphenylamino) benzaldehyde along with the formation
of water as byproduct. AMTPAA has extended conjugation because of which it can be used as a hole
transport material (HTM). 2 Aminoantharquinone (AAQ) has an absorption peak at 402 nm in UV
spectroscopy which is attributed to the π π* transition of the atomic C=C ring and n π* transition of
C=O bond. 2 Azomethine 4 triphenyl amino anthraquinone (AMTPAA) has an absorption peak at
411nm.
The red shift of 9 nm observed in AMTPAA can be attributed to the extended conjugation which is a
direct consequence of the electron withdrawing azo methane bond and planar conformation of the
azomethane based backbone resulting in electronic push pull effect. An asymmetrical band with broad
shoulder peak towards shorter wavelength (around 340 350 nm) was observed due to the overlapping
with another band of the conjugated structures. As the shoulder peak has weak absorption in the
visible region these compounds will not hinder sunlight from efficiently reaching the light absorbing

Pastoring and Parenting Essay
The problem with being both a pastor and a parent at the same time is finding and adhering to the
distinction between shepherding the church members and being a father to one s children. A
distinction must be made between pastoring a church and parenting one s children because of the
nature of each responsibility which when combined with the other produces a difficult situation. While
being a pastor requires a caring heart for one s congregation, being a good parent requires a love for
one s children that is so deep that caring for anyone else pales in comparison. Problems arise when a
pastor cares too much for his congregation or what they think of him and ignores his family in the
process. One s family should always come first not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In a Pastor s home, these may be only the basics; expectations may be pilled on the pastor s kid (PK)
to such an alarming degree that many adults, let alone kids, could not handle the pressure. A PK may
be so sheltered that they will have no friends aside from those that are chosen for them. They may not
be allowed to go to a public or even Christian school and instead forced to be home schooled in an
effort to control who they come in contact with. This desire to have complete control stems from a
fear that left to their own devices, a PK will bring public shame to the congregation or scandal to the
community (Mickey 22). Usually, when one thinks of a sheltered child it is in a negative way as the
earlier examples have shown. However, not all sheltering is bad and within a Pastor s home it may be
very necessary for the sake of the family s relationship with each other. The necessity is shown in the
following examples. The father may shelter the kids from certain members of the church when said
members make unexpected visits to the home. The PK may also be sheltered from certain groups or
clubs at church so that they are not made fun of for being the pastor s son or daughter. Those who are
outside of the pastor s family may never find it possible to relate to the difficulties faced by the PK
and for this reason, a protective barrier is often times needed.

Child Rearing In Higher Social Classes
In many societies, there are people with different assets and prestige in the world. Many people in
higher social classes have different ways in raising their children than people in lower classes. The
reason behind this inequality is due to social classes that exist. Social classes are groups of people
with different statuses. Social classes are important because it helps determine the way a child will be
raised. In addition, it is shown to significantly affect a child s future. Furthermore, social class is
shown to affect people s families such as with child rearing. Child rearing has changed over time
during the colonial era there were no classes that were defined, both parents were responsible for child
rearing. During the industrial era, most of the responsibility belonged to the mother. In a society, the
social class of a parent impacts a child s life. Therefore, due to the parents social class children would
be able to go to better schools such as private schools to better their education and later have better
jobs in the future. As a result, this impact on a child s life due to social classes brings up the questions
how does a social class affect the financial incomes of a family for raising a child? As well as how do

leading marketing strategies. However, there is risk in this strategy, because concentration on a single
business strategy is similar to putting all of a firm s eggs in one industry basket . On the business side,
Wal Mart is the country s most sophisticated retailer in terms of using information systems. Their
cross docking inventory and transportation services able them to have the goods needed by the
consumer at all times. In order for Wal Mart to become a major global retailer, they have closely
examined and utilized tactics to profit from their many stores. One great tactic is starting free trade
zone distribution centers, in turn, saving almost $500,000 annually. Another tactic includes their
service from when you walk in the store to when you leave. Also, their bread and butter is again the
technology they utilize. They can track how much of one item has been sold on any giving day, and if
not a hot commodity at one store, they will ship it out to another where it is being sold much faster.

Investing in Education Is the Most Effective Way to Reduce...
Investing in education is the most effective way to reduce poverty
In many ways this is a difficult statement to assess. There is no doubt that education is a key initiative
in the reduction of poverty. Whether it is the most effective is harder to say for sure. We can easily
confirm correlation in the relationship between reduced poverty and increases in factors such as
education and health. However it is no simple task to measure and compare the level of impact a
component such as education has on poverty. There are many factors and variables that influence the
poverty of a country and many of these factors influence one another, strengthening or weakening
their individual effects and implications. However after researching the topic I ... Show more content

The investigation, which randomized more than 75 schools, shows that the de worming lowered
absenteeism from school by one quarter in the treatment group and also improved health and school

In 2005 at the UN s World Summit, the international community pledged half the number of people
living in extreme poverty by 2015 outlining the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). These are a
series of eight dead lined targets, most of which aim to eradicate the root causes of poverty worldwide.
These goals highlight the main forms in which poverty appears hunger, education, inequality and
various health related problems. These are therefore the main areas that investment is made to reduce
poverty (UNFPA, 2005). The eight MDG s are: eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, Achieving
universal primary education, promoting gender equality and empowering women, reducing child
mortality rates, improving maternal health, combating HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases,
ensuring environmental sustainability, and developing a global partnership for development.
Looking at these MDG s, which area of investment would be most effective in reducing poverty? You
can see from the above goals that health is a dominant issue, as many of the goals can be attributed to
health deficiency problems. It is also true that hunger is maybe the most important and fundamental
form of poverty

International Business Systems And Porter s Diamond Model
Porter s Diamond Model provides companies with four reliant factors that fully depend on the state of
each other to achieve success within a competitive environment. However, Curran (2001) claims that
Porter s Diamond Model does not fully explain a country s competitive advantage since only two
factors provide evidence of their competitive position. The used factors are company rivalry, strategy,
and factor endowments. With reference to the competitive positions of countries within major
economies, factor endowments comprising of land, capital, labor, advanced technology and materials
as stated in Porter s theory, a government is responsible for contributing toward a company s physical
infrastructure (Porter 1998).
National Business Systems and Porter s Diamond Model in major economies
It is only through industrial effort that a firm can attain or maintain its competitive advantage.
Correspondingly, a determined business system will focus on competitive advantage fundamentals
such as the chief role of creativity and the scope of challenges and pressure. Such detail exposes the
management of a business to perceived shortcuts to success, which are actually failures. The
implementation of Porter s Diamond attempts to provide research results with fewer costs and risks as
well. Through appropriate leadership techniques suggested in the model, it is evident that the origin of
competitive advantage is a firm s management. Responsibilities involved are creating pressures for

American Imperialism In Cambodia
The Cambodia of the late 19th and 20th century was a far cry from the once great Khmer Empire
famous for its engagement in ambitious state projects such as the building of Angkor Wat. In 1884,
France integrated Cambodia into its Indochinese colony. France lost its grip on Cambodia in 1941 to
Japanese invasion during World War II but attempted to gain it back at the war s end. At the
conclusion 1954 Geneva Accords that concluded the eight year long First Indochina War, Cambodia
gained its independence. During the conflict, Cambodian elites such as Saloth Sar (Pol Pot) were

The agrarian reorganization of society was the main concept taken directly from Mao s Great Leap
Forward. Pol Pot hoped to overcome Cambodia s lack of materials and technology through
exploitation of the population s labor potential on collectivized farms. This program also tied in an
extreme level of xenophobia, as Pol Pot saw Cambodia s cities as exhibition centers for unholy
western ideals of capitalist commerce and industry, and education. In its exile of Cambodians from
cities, the Khmer Rouge killed all intellectuals and civil servants of the former western aligned
regime, as the Party saw them as people likely to have absorbed western ideas, and therefore, as
threats to the Communist society. People were forced onto to collectivized farms on the countryside
with the intention of creating a self sufficient one class state society of peasants, which in turn would
free Cambodia from international interference. However, in practice, those already living in the
countryside at the onset of this program, the so called base people, enjoyed a higher societal ranking
as the Khmer Rouge viewed them as model citizens for the new order. Loung Ung describes this class

Compare And Contrast Antigone And The Whale Rider
Antigone and the Whale Rider Compare / Contrast Essay
A brother lies dead on a battlefield unburied. A culture unknown to a child screams for discovery. Two
girls with two different fates will go through difficult trials to accomplish contrasting goals. Antigone
and Pai were two young girls who disobeyed respected and authoritative figures. Antigone challenged
the King of Thebes edict and Pai ignored the chief of her local townspeople s order. Antigone was
sentenced to death while Pai was punished with expulsion of chief in training activities and scorn from
her grandfather. The differences and similarities between Antigone and Pai s actions and punishments
as well as their wrongdoings in their cultures are striking and clear. First of all, Antigone and Pai both
audaciously committed an offense by ignoring their superiors. Antigone tried to bury her brother and
Pai sat down at the front of the class . Pai and Antigone did not concoct any type of hearsay or false
information about their superiors. However, Pai continued to disobey her grandfather behind his back
by learning the ways of the chief, even though he had forbidden her from doing so. Antigone had
admitted to the deed and basically turned herself into authorities. Pai did not let her grandfather know
that she was defying him; he saw Pai using techniques taught in his class. All the same, Pai and
Antigone took similar action in disobeying a respected figure, but their actions after the initial

Australia s Economic Success And Growth Rates
Economic Background:
In the past two decades, the Australian economy has been, and continues to be a very strong and
steady economy because of steady GDP growth rates, with an average around 3.5% annually
(Heritage.org). Australia has also benefitted from considerably low inflation and unemployment rates.
Because of these macroeconomic values, Australia is ranked third in the ranking of regional
economies (Heritage.org). The reasons for Australia s ongoing success is mainly because of the boom
in foreign demand of importing the plethora of natural resources and minerals the country contains,
combined with the structural economic policies enacted in the 1980 s (The Economist Australia s
Economy). Australia is also one of the few countries ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The largest slice of Australia s exports go to China, exporting around 31.6% of its total exports,
making China Australia s biggest benefactor to its economy (DFAT). Although the exports mainly
consist of the titanic amount of minerals that Australia mines, China also imports large quantities of
wool, another heavily traded commodity of Australia. One of the leading wool industries, the
Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) has said it is easier to sell fine wool for clothes to China than to
traditional recession hit markets in Europe (The Economist Hitched to the China Wagon).
The exportation of wool in conjunction with the exportation of minerals and ore to China makes China
a strong partner with Australia when it comes to resource trading. China obviously is dependent on
Australia s exportations, making Australia s relations with China a strength of the overall Australian
economy. The Australian economy however, is clearly just as dependent on China s demand for such
commodities. Although Australia greatly benefits from China s demand in its exports, Australia needs
to make sure the trade relations between them don t act as a crutch for the Australian economy. Recent
studies and articles predict China s demand for Australian goods will be shifting leftward in the near
future, possibly impacting Australia s economy, and putting it into a recession.

Anthropology and Gender Essay
Though women have played an integral part in the history of the discipline of anthropology, it was not
until the early 1970 s that the field of anthropology and gender, or feminist anthropology emerged.
Sex and gender roles have always been a vital part of any ethnographic study, but the contributors of
this theory began to address the androcentric nature of anthropology itself. The substantial gap in
information concerning the study of women was perceived as a male bias, a prejudice made more
apparent because what little women centered fieldwork was done received insufficient attention from
the academic community. While anthropology was considered one of the more egalitarian fields of
study, it was dominated by white, Western males who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of Slocum s contemporaries, Eleanor Leacock (1922 1987) chose to differently analyze gender
research, focusing on distinctions in power as it relates to society, the economy, and politics (2011:
397). She concentrated on North American natives and aboriginal Australians and their changing
gender roles as the result of Western influence. Another feminist trend gave emphasis to gender
identities, analyzing the ways in which race, class and gender converge. David Valentine, born in
1966, illustrates such an emphasis in his work which concerns the cross cultural variations on the
westernized concepts of gender identity and sexuality, by which we categorize sexual desire
(2011:398). As evidenced by the variety of emphases within the theory, feminist anthropologists were
fully committed to assessing all previously ignored facets of the subjugated female within numerous
cultures worldwide.
Several decades ago the idea of women as subordinate was considered to be a universality by the
aforementioned white, Western male anthropologists who lead the field. Despite an anthropologist s
endeavor to be unbiased, the fact is these traditional anthropologists came from a culture where many
aspects of human life were male dominant. Though many studied

The House On Mango Street And The Things They Carried
What s the difference between a young Hispanic girl and a soldier in the Vietnam War? It sounds like
a bad joke with an even worse punchline, but though there may be many true answers to this question,
there are more similarities than one might imagine. These similarities can be observed in Sandra
Cisneros The House on Mango Street and Tim O Brien s The Things They Carried and their main
characters, Esperanza and O Brien, respectively. Both novels divided into non chronological stories,
both involve characters who feel stuck in their situations, and both realize the importance of returning
for the people they left behind. At their most basic levels, The House on Mango Street and The Things
They Carried are both broken down into stories, which, although some reference events and characters
in other stories, do not follow a definite chronological order. The title story in The Things They
Carried, for instance, places its characters in the Vietnam war, but in no specific year of the war, or
place in Vietnam. The next story, Love, begins with the words Many years after the war (O Brien 26),
placing it definitely outside of Vietnam in O Brien s home in Massachusetts, in fact. The next story,
Spin, however, goes back to the men of Alpha Company together in Vietnam. O Brien even makes it

The Visit by Friedrich Durrenmatt
Friedrich Durrenmatt, like Samuel Beckett, became a prominent writer that wrote about human nature
after World War II. The Visit, for instance, is about an impoverished town that is in need of money.
The town realizes on Ill, who is a main character, to call a friend and ask for a favor, and he does.
Claire, Ill s friend, places an ironic twist on the requirement in order to get the money, which is
someone must kill Ill, but by the end of the play someone does kill Ill. In general, the play depicts the
idea that it is human nature to do anything in order to survive. Due to Friedrich Durrenmatt s various
techniques when writing the play, the reader gets a town comparable to Germany during the 1930s and
1940s. Friedrich Durrenmatt s techniques were used to foreshadow the play and to depict the
condition and choices of Germany before and during World War II from a logical view. For example,
the black panther, which is one of the most profound symbols throughout the play, is Claire s pet. She
brings it with her to Guellen in a cage. The panther is the symbolic foreshadow of Ill s life in this play,
and Claire refers to Ill several times by the nickname black panther . The butler proclaims, The black
panther escaped, Madam. (58) The black panther escapes around the same time she offers the million
dollar. Like the black panther, Ill is trying to escape Guellen before someone kills him, which is
similar to Jews trying to escape Germany during the 1930s before Hitler s

was of the amount of $4,5 billion, an upsurge of $1,9 billion compared to 2013. This success is
partially, influenced by the efforts that are undertaken by the firm in controlling and lowering its fuel
consumption, mainly, but also by reducing waste and recycling (Delta Airlines, 2014).

Essay On Bilingualism
Twenty percent of the population can be considered bilingual in the U.S today. They re over 311
different languages spoken in the United States. Living in the States, there has become a popular belief
that English is the only language that should be spoken. It s astonishing people don t apprehend they
re thousands of languages worldwide and U.S citizens are trying to be self centered around one
language, English. Therefore, this has generated tension throughout by cultural warfare. Cultural
warfare has been brought to this world created from individuality and creating own identities.
Bilingualism has created a window to connect with others around us from all over the world. Without
knowing more than one language, we would be restricted from many people and opportunities of
living an extraordinary, passionate culture.
Espada s ideas of bilingualism is expressed in several ways. Martin Espada s main idea he makes clear
to the reader is keeping loyalty to your own culture and traditions. Secondly, bilingualism can create
culture warfare between two languages. Espada argues the majority of the people want english to
become the only language and culture in the United States. But, Espada wants to keep diversity alive.

Salinity In Vibrios
Temperature and salinity are known to play important and interrelated roles in the levels of Vibrio spp.
Kelly and Stroh (1988) reported that V. parahaemolyticus was found in Pacific Northwest coastal
waters only during the summer months, when water temperatures were above 17 °C and salinities
were below 13 ppt. Further research by Kaspar and Tamplin (1993) demonstrated that V. vulnificus
levels increased when salinities was between 5 and 25 ppt, ; however, when salinities were 30, 35, and
38 ppt, V. vulnificus levels decreased by 58%, 88%, and 83%, respectively. The same situation was
reported by Motes and others (1998), who also observed a decrease of V. vulnificus numbers at
salinities above 28 ppt, which is specific of some Atlantic coastal ... Show more content on

Accordingly to the effect of pH, Karem and others (1994) demonstrated that when Aeromonas
hydrophila suspended in broth was shifted from pH 7.2 to 5.0 (conditioned), cells survived longer
when exposed to a further pH downshift equal to 3.5. Thus, it appears that A. hydrophila exhibits an
adaptive mechanism of acid tolerance response capable of protecting cells at pH values as low as 3.5.
Wong and others (1998) found that V. parahaemolyticus was more acid tolerant in the broth model
when it was initially conditioned by a pH downshift from 7.5 to 5.0. Koga and others (1999) studies
demonstrate that acid adapted V. parahaemolyticus cells had an increased resistance to heat (47 °C),
crystal violet, bile, and deoxycholic acid, when compared to non adapted cells. In addition, these
investigators noticed a change in the composition of the outer membrane protein of acid adapted cells.
For V. vulnificus, Koo and others (2000) reported a strain to strain differences in acid tolerance
although there was a pH value (somewhere around pH 2.0) below which all strains were inactivated.
Bang and Drake (2004) reported that 3 strains of V. vulnificus have shown increased acid resistance in
broth acidified with citric acid (pH 3.5) after prior adaptation at pH 5.5, regardless of strain and
duration of adaptation time; the same

The Importance of Oil in U.S. Foreign Policy Essay
The Importance of Oil in U.S. Foreign Policy
During the oil and energy crisis of the mid 1970s
Americans became painfully aware of the consequences of the
United States dependence on foreign sources of oil.
Unfortunately, research and exploration for alternative sources of oil in North America has not been
pursued vigorously enough to cease such foreign dependence. As a result, in the mid 1990s Americans
find themselves in the same precarious position as they were during the
1970s. The Persian Gulf War in 1991 was all the proof needed to convince the United States of how
strongly oil still influences our foreign policy and international relations in general. Oil and U.S.

However, the issues surrounding oil did become more clearly defined. According to Beaver
(1991), the availability and cost of conventional energy sources; national security concerns; the
technical, legal, and economic uncertainties related to synthetic fuels; and the emergence of large oil
companies as major forces in shaping energy policy. These issues that became salient in the 1920s
remain relevant to the 1990s (Beaver, 1991, p.
241).
Both the Wilson and Harding administrations took proactive foreign policy actions in order to ensure
adequate supplies of oil for the booming economy. Both administrations assisted major U.S.
companies in their attempts to secure foreign oil agreements. For example, the government tried to
persuade Great Britain and the
Netherlands to allow U.S. oil companies into the Middle East and Pacific regions where they
controlled most of the oil reserves. The U.S. government hoped to gain an open door policy in oil
exploration. However, U.S. diplomacy failed to secure this from either the British or the Dutch.
According to Beaver, Such failures frustrated U.S. officials. Frank
G. Lane, secretary of the interior, called British control of Middle Eastern oil a menace. In fact, anti
British sentiments prompted Congress to pass retaliatory legislation barring foreigners from acquiring
oil leases on public lands (Beaver, 1991, p. 241).

Heathcliff In Wuthering Heights
In Wuthering Height, Emily Bronte described Heathcliff as a man s shape animated by demon life a
ghoul . Bronte is at her best when she is describing him, and his looks garner a lot of attention from
her and other characters. In Heathcliff s life, his youthful love for Catherine Earnshaw is better than
his final years of vengeance. Heathcliff who is one of the main character is presented in many forms in
the novel. He is portrayed as a man who loves Catherine, homeless, vengeful. He is also described as
evil because he was treated badly in his youth and Catherine didn t choose him to marry, she chose
Edgar Linton. When Mr. Earnshaw brought Heathcliff to his house, he was treated badly by Hindley.

The Effects Of Homeschooling On Children And Public Schools
Introduction: Homeschooling is becoming much more common now than it was years ago. Parents are
now preferring to homeschool their children over public school due to many reasons such as religion,
safety, academic quality travel, family togetherness, separation of government and school, mastery
over grades, expenses, and focusing on learning plans made for the student. Public schools are
institutions, which are funded by tax revenues from the government. Schools have boundaries to then
figure out which students will attend a certain school to avoid overcrowding. The schools curriculum
is drawn up by the state and they follow a standardized testing result and other measurements, which
gives the state information of how the school is performing. According to Isabel Shaw, there are an
abundance of pros and cons of deicing to homeschool your children. Some key points from this article
were:
Homeschooling Pros The advantages of homeschooling your children are that as a parent you get to
decide what your child learns and at what age depending on their ability and level of interested and as
a student you get to choose how long you want to learn about a topic and when you want to. During
difficult times in the family or new transitions such as having a baby, moving, or a death in the family,
homeschooling stabilizes the family because you don t have to worry about missing school since you
can figure out a time that works best for the family to continue learning during

Thelma And Louise Essay
Thelma Louise by director Ridley Scott is a powerful film because it is about more than just
friendship. It examines a bond between Thelma, played by Geena Davis and Louise, played by Susan
Sarandon. This film is about transformation, liberation, and escaping, it transcends the genre. (Lipsitz)
In the film Thelma Louise, the use of foreshadowing, mise en scene, and character development
depicts the message of men vs women. Thelma Louise begins by the two women attempting to be
free, free from responsibilities, relationships, work, and concerns. They want to escape from their lives
and experience something different and new. They meet a man named Harlan, whom Louise later
murders, bringing another level of freedom into the mix. This freedom becomes the goal for the rest of
the film while the girls try to escape from the police. They later become cornered by the police and the
FBI on the edge of the Grand Canyon, which leads Thelma and Louise to make the decision to drive
off the cliff. (Moura) One film technique used in Thelma ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the beginning of this film, Thelma kind of behaves like a child. She is hesitant, messy, hasty,
anxious, but also spontaneous. Thelma tries to bring silly things with her that Louise disapproves of
and claims that they won t need them, like a lantern. In one of the scenes where the girls are on the
road, Thelma is shown with her legs relaxed on the dashboard and they are almost touching the
windshield, which Louise doesn t like at all. We also see Thelma s characteristics when Harlan
approaches the girls in the bar. Thelma is nice and welcomes him, she also laughs at all his jokes. In
this scene and throughout the film, Thelma is approachable, premature, pure, and spirited. For most of
the film, their personalities go unaltered until they get robbed by JD. Thelma then takes charge and
tells Louise that everything will be alright, she even robs a store to get more money.

  • 2. Maxine Hong Kingston By Maxine Kong Maxine Hong Kingston prides herself on her personal strength and character, as well as the ability she developed to assert herself into a culture that is not accepting of her differences. As the daughter of Chinese immigrants living in the US, she was tasked with living a double life, straddling the line between her traditional Chinese upbringing and the environment outside of her home in 1960 s California. She was in many ways a perfectly normal and intelligent child. Through her writing she is able to describe complex interactions from her childhood, detailing her reasoning and understanding of the world. Despite this cleverness and flexibility, she begins her account by describing herself as voiceless, seemingly dumb, and explains how it was that she failed kindergarten. Through this story we get a view of how an intelligent young person might experience difficulties caused by cultural differences, a unique perspective from a first generation American. In this excerpt from Woman Warrior, Kingston recounts her experiences as a young person without a voice. Her struggle is deepened by the culturally engrained xenophobia and misogyny that existed in her diverse neighborhood, as well as pressures and extreme obstacles thrown at her by her own mother. The child whom Kingston describes goes through continuous growth in finding her own identity and strength in character, but it is clear that she still carries the fear and pain created by her uniquely difficult ... Kendrick uses detailed stories to recreate a picture of her childhood, including memories of sleepovers, school bullies , and bus trips to New York. Anna Kendrick also mentions people that were part of her life, such as her parents sending her and her brother to New York for an audition, and Tori the bully who tried to steal all of her friends. Kendrick expresses her anger when Tori frames her for insulting her friends, and shares about the excitement she felt when she landed her first acting job. All of this being told from a first person point of view. Anna Kendrick uses idioms and superlative word choice along with an overall humourous tone. Figurative language that was used included, I shouldn t get too excited. I shouldn t count my chickens. , and the metaphor that caught my eye was when she compared underneath the slide on the playground to a Victorian asylum. It is a hollow muscle and can be found between the lungs in the mediastinum and behind the sternum and between the second and sixth ribs. It is the size of a fist and has four chambers. The upper chambers are the left and right atria, with the bottom chambers the left and right ventricles. The heart consists of several layers: the pericardium (outer protective covering of fibrous tissue), the epicardium (made up of epithelial cells and secretes serum which prevents the layers rubbing), the myocardium (the muscular wall of the heart and forms a septum which separates the right and left side of the heart. • 5. Comparing The Representation Of Women s The Yellow... Compare the representation of women in Gilman s The yellow wallpaper and Austen s pride and prejudice . To what extent do you agree with the view that Gilman presents conventional patriarchal expectations of women, more critically than Austen. Both Austen and Gilman breakthrough the conformity of femininity at a time of rising feminism in a bid to encourage the female viewpoint which was put down or rather shunned to be less valuable by the society they lived in. Gilman however presents it in a more peculiar and violent way in making her character fall into sanity to bring across women s right of voice. One could argue Austen, although subtly hinting at the affects or mocking patriarchy, does not seem to have as much of an impact or focus on exploring the harsh conventional expectations women faced and the effect it had on restraining their creative conscience. Both authors focus on the unequal status of women within marriage. Gilman explores, Women s obligation to remain in the domestic sphere. She argues that it steals them of the expression of their full powers of creativity and intelligence. Her character jane, mocks the rational masculine explanation in not believing in faith but rather figures in comparison Elizabeth s reading in pride and prejudice allows her to explore her self identity. • 6. Eardrum Perforation Eardrum Perforation An eardrum perforation is a puncture or tear in the eardrum. This is also called a ruptured eardrum. The eardrum is a thin, round tissue inside your ear that separates the ear canal from the middle ear. This is the tissue that detects sound and enables you to hear. An eardrum perforation can cause discomfort and hearing loss. In most cases, the eardrum will heal without treatment and with little or no permanent hearing loss. CAUSES Sudden pressure changes that happen in situations such as scuba diving or flying in an airplane. Foreign objects in the ear. Inserting a cotton tipped swab or any blunt object in the ear. Loud noise. Trauma to the ear. Attempting to remove an object from the ear. SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS Hearing loss. Ear pain. Ringing in the ears. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If the eardrum does not heal, your health care provider may recommend a procedure to place a patch over the eardrum or surgery to repair the eardrum. HOME CARE INSTRUCTIONS Keep your ear dry. This will improve healing. Do not submerge your head under water until healing is complete. Do not swim or dive until your health care provider approves. While bathing or showering, protect the ear by using a waterproof earplug or by placing a piece of cotton covered with petroleum jelly in the outer ear canal. Take medicines only as directed by your health care provider. Blow your nose gently, or avoid blowing it if possible. Forceful blowing increases the pressure in the middle ear. This may cause further injury or may delay healing. Resume normal activities when the perforation has healed. Your health care provider can let you know when this has occurred. Talk to your health care provider before flying on an airplane. Air travel is generally allowed with a perforated eardrum. Keep all follow up visits as directed by your health care provider. This is

Subversion of Class and Gender Roles in Jane Austen s Persuasion In Jane Austen s Persuasion, Mrs. Croft makes but few appearances and delivers little dialogue. Nevertheless, Austen gives her significant narrative and thematic importance. Mrs. Croft provides a foil for several of the Elliots, while developing a commonality with the frequently ostracized Anne. This bond between Mrs. Croft and Austen s heroine valorizes Mrs. Croft s radical views concerning feminism and marriage. According to Anne, then, an unconventional woman can still be attractive. Furthermore, to describe her weather beaten complexion (34), Anne gently describes how Mrs. Croft [seems] to have lived some years longer in the world than her real eight and thirty (35). The Effect Of Different Amounts Of Vinegar Introduction + Research Question The goal of this lab was to determine the effects of different amounts of Vinegar on the temperature in the reaction NaHCO3 + HC2H3O2 → NaC2H3O2 + H2O + CO2. My lab partner and I researched and experimented with the temperature after this reaction because we were intrigued by the solution seeming colder in the demonstration during class. We wondered why and how a reaction can yield decreasing temperatures. We also wondered how vinegar would affect the temperature change caused by the reaction. This lead to our experiment to investigate the relationship between the amount of vinegar in the reaction and the temperature of the solution 40s after the reaction commences. The Hypothesis If the amount of vinegar is increased then the temperature of the solution will drop until it stabilizes at a certain point. The dependent variable in this experiment (the temperature) will stay the exact same without any vinegar being added because of the lack of reaction. If more vinegar is added I believe the temperature will continue to get colder until a certain point where the temperature will stabilize. Theory/ Background Information/Abstract. These points can serve as dividing lines that illuminate shifts in policy and opinion. However, thinking of this history in terms of critical moments or turning points can simplify the complex actors, sentiments and tendencies that create and influence foreign policy. These critical points are not necessarily the sole cause of massive shifts in policy, but often add impetus to pre existing tendencies. Nonetheless, watersheds can help the public digest patterns in foreign policy, playing an important role in how American s perceive their role in the world. According to Brzezinski, America s relationship with the world has been characterized by cycles of extroversion and introversion , or involvement and isolationism. Throughout the nation s history, Americans have witnessed and influenced many shifts or turns in this cycle, caused, exacerbated or illuminated by several critical events. Through this lens, the Spanish American War, Pearl Harbor, the Vietnam War and 9/11 are critical points that added the impetus to shift the cycle of U.S. foreign policy in the other direction. The Spanish American war paved the way for American Imperialism, illuminating a shift towards interventionist policies. AMTPAA has extended conjugation because of which it can be used as a hole transport material (HTM). 2 Aminoantharquinone (AAQ) has an absorption peak at 402 nm in UV spectroscopy which is attributed to the π π* transition of the atomic C=C ring and n π* transition of C=O bond. 2 Azomethine 4 triphenyl amino anthraquinone (AMTPAA) has an absorption peak at 411nm. The red shift of 9 nm observed in AMTPAA can be attributed to the extended conjugation which is a direct consequence of the electron withdrawing azo methane bond and planar conformation of the azomethane based backbone resulting in electronic push pull effect. An asymmetrical band with broad shoulder peak towards shorter wavelength (around 340 350 nm) was observed due to the overlapping with another band of the conjugated structures. • 24. International Business Systems And Porter s Diamond Model Porter s Diamond Model provides companies with four reliant factors that fully depend on the state of each other to achieve success within a competitive environment. However, Curran (2001) claims that Porter s Diamond Model does not fully explain a country s competitive advantage since only two factors provide evidence of their competitive position. The used factors are company rivalry, strategy, and factor endowments. With reference to the competitive positions of countries within major economies, factor endowments comprising of land, capital, labor, advanced technology and materials as stated in Porter s theory, a government is responsible for contributing toward a company s physical infrastructure (Porter 1998). National Business Systems and Porter s Diamond Model in major economies It is only through industrial effort that a firm can attain or maintain its competitive advantage. Correspondingly, a determined business system will focus on competitive advantage fundamentals such as the chief role of creativity and the scope of challenges and pressure. Such detail exposes the management of a business to perceived shortcuts to success, which are actually failures. The implementation of Porter s Diamond attempts to provide research results with fewer costs and risks as well. Through appropriate leadership techniques suggested in the model, it is evident that the origin of competitive advantage is a firm s management. In its exile of Cambodians from cities, the Khmer Rouge killed all intellectuals and civil servants of the former western aligned regime, as the Party saw them as people likely to have absorbed western ideas, and therefore, as threats to the Communist society. Because of these macroeconomic values, Australia is ranked third in the ranking of regional economies (Heritage.org). One of the leading wool industries, the Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) has said it is easier to sell fine wool for clothes to China than to traditional recession hit markets in Europe (The Economist Hitched to the China Wagon). Anthropology and Gender Essay Though women have played an integral part in the history of the discipline of anthropology, it was not until the early 1970 s that the field of anthropology and gender, or feminist anthropology emerged. Sex and gender roles have always been a vital part of any ethnographic study, but the contributors of this theory began to address the androcentric nature of anthropology itself. The substantial gap in information concerning the study of women was perceived as a male bias, a prejudice made more apparent because what little women centered fieldwork was done received insufficient attention from the academic community. Another feminist trend gave emphasis to gender identities, analyzing the ways in which race, class and gender converge. David Valentine, born in 1966, illustrates such an emphasis in his work which concerns the cross cultural variations on the westernized concepts of gender identity and sexuality, by which we categorize sexual desire (2011:398). As evidenced by the variety of emphases within the theory, feminist anthropologists were fully committed to assessing all previously ignored facets of the subjugated female within numerous cultures worldwide. These similarities can be observed in Sandra Cisneros The House on Mango Street and Tim O Brien s The Things They Carried and their main characters, Esperanza and O Brien, respectively. Both novels divided into non chronological stories, both involve characters who feel stuck in their situations, and both realize the importance of returning for the people they left behind. For V. vulnificus, Koo and others (2000) reported a strain to strain differences in acid tolerance although there was a pH value (somewhere around pH 2.0) below which all strains were inactivated. Bang and Drake (2004) reported that 3 strains of V. vulnificus have shown increased acid resistance in broth acidified with citric acid (pH 3.5) after prior adaptation at pH 5.5, regardless of strain and duration of adaptation time; the same ... The Importance of Oil in U.S. Foreign Policy Essay The Importance of Oil in U.S. Foreign Policy During the oil and energy crisis of the mid 1970s Americans became painfully aware of the consequences of the United States dependence on foreign sources of oil. Unfortunately, research and exploration for alternative sources of oil in North America has not been pursued vigorously enough to cease such foreign dependence. As a result, in the mid 1990s Americans find themselves in the same precarious position as they were during the 1970s. The Persian Gulf War in 1991 was all the proof needed to convince the United States of how strongly oil still influences our foreign policy and international relations in general. According to Beaver (1991), the availability and cost of conventional energy sources; national security concerns; the technical, legal, and economic uncertainties related to synthetic fuels; and the emergence of large oil companies as major forces in shaping energy policy. These issues that became salient in the 1920s remain relevant to the 1990s (Beaver, 1991, p. 241). Both the Wilson and Harding administrations took proactive foreign policy actions in order to ensure adequate supplies of oil for the booming economy. Both administrations assisted major U.S. companies in their attempts to secure foreign oil agreements. For example, the government tried to persuade Great Britain and the Netherlands to allow U.S. oil companies into the Middle East and Pacific regions where they controlled most of the oil reserves. The U.S. government hoped to gain an open door policy in oil exploration. However, U.S. diplomacy failed to secure this from either the British or the Dutch. According to Beaver, Such failures frustrated U.S. officials. Frank G. Lane, secretary of the interior, called British control of Middle Eastern oil a menace. In fact, anti British sentiments prompted Congress to pass retaliatory legislation barring foreigners from acquiring oil leases on public lands (Beaver, 1991, p. 241). ...
