Comparing Kipling s Invictus And If
Invictus (1888) written by William Ernest Henley, and If (1910) written by Rudyard Kipling, are
two texts dealing with similar content, that use different styles to help us understand the common
theme of living life to the fullest. Invictus explores the main idea of not giving up despite the
hardships that come in your way. You can overcome them with perseverance and knowing that
only you can control your fate. If is advice on how to lead a good life. It is an inspiring yet
cautionary poem on how we should conduct ourselves in certain situations.
Invictus is a poem about going through hard times and getting through them with passion and
defiance. Henley explores the theme in the first stanza with, Out of the night that covers me, uses ...

Throughout the whole poem, Kipling uses iambic pentameter to keep a constant rhythm that is
very calming. Another technique is the use of enjambment throughout the poem which makes it
seem as if it is one collective thought. There is never really an ending until the exclamation
mark at the end. Kipling s selection of words is simple and suit the poem, especially after
discovering that the poem was written for his son, And which is more you ll be a Man, my son!
Repetition of words such as If are constantly used to create suspense for every new scene and
keeps the audience at the edge of their seats to find out what happens. The repetitive use of you
establishes a connection between the poet and the audience. It also makes them feel inspired, as if
the poem is directed to them so they feel like they can achieve

The Ten Steps Of Narcotics Anonymous
rehabcenter.net What are the Twelve Steps of Narcotics Anonymous?
If you are suffering from a drug addiction, you ve likely heard of groups like Narcotics
Anonymous and their dedication to the 12 step process. However, few people really understand
what these 12 steps entail and how they can be used to overcome addiction. Understanding them
can help you decide whether this process is right for you.
What Is Narcotics Anonymous?
Narcotics Anonymous or NA is something of a sister program to Alcoholics Anonymous. It was
founded in 1953 to help people recover from narcotic addiction. However, it has since expanded its
parameters and allows in people with any kind of addiction problems, including heroin, cocaine,
prescription drugs, and even ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This isn t true: they are designed to be effective when utilized in any order, meaning you may be
able to make the 10th step before the 2nd. However, most people find that following the steps in
order helps give their life a focus and order that addiction had eliminated. These steps include:
1. We admitted that we were powerless over our addiction; that our lives had become
unmanageable; In this step, you face the reality of your addiction and come to terms with the fact
that your life is out of control. You are preparing yourself to receive the help you need.
2. We came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity; in many
ways, this is one of the most important steps: you are surrendering your fate to a Higher Power in
order to help restore your life to stability. For many people, giving up this control will be a major
challenge.
3. We made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood
Him; giving yourself over to the God of your choice and asking Him for help is a beautiful
moment in the 12 step program and one that will give you the strength to succeed.
4. We made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves; total personal honesty is a must
in this step. You need to grasp the ways that your addiction has changed your behavior and caused
you to behave in ways that may shame you. However, you also need to identify your positive traits
and work towards strengthening

The Office Episode The Convict
The Office episode The Convict incorporates multiple concepts learned in social psychology
such as schemas and naive realism, stereotype threats and the perseverance effect. In this episode
specifically, the Scranton branch of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company absorbs new employees
from a Stanford branch that has closed down. The accounting department notices they have
received a check and aren t sure where it came from so they schedule a conference call with
Michael, who is the branch manager, and the corporate office. Corporate says, Yes, Michael, we

Ross, Lepper Hubbard performed an experiment designed to showcase the perseverance
phenomenon by having 60 high school females read suicide notes and judge whether they were
real or fictitious. Whether or not the girls would perform above average (24 out of 25 correct),
average (17 out of 25 correct) or below average (around 10 out of 25 correct) was decided by the
researchers prior to the actual experiment. When the girls were informed how they did, they
were then debriefed and told it actually had nothing to do with ability. The researchers
apologized but asked the women to fill out a survey rating how well they did compared to the
outcome the researcher assigned them to, how many answers they thought an average student
would get right on this and then how well they would do if they were given an equal task a
second time around. They found that the girls who were told they did exceptionally well still
rated themselves as capable of performing to those standards and their overall satisfaction was
higher on the questionnaire. Opposite of that, the women who were told they did poorly continued
to rate their abilities as poorer even after debriefing took place. Their assessment of performance or
ability on the self survey showed the perseverance effect taking place: though they were told they
were given false information, they still continued to behave in a manner parallel to that original
claim. This is seen when Michael becomes frustrated at numerous attempts from the office
employees and Martin to disprove his stereotype of prison and its inmates. Michael leaves the
conference room following his prison Mike skit and locks the door from the outside, shouting at
everyone in there, There! Now sit there and think about your freedom! Though he is told his idea
of what prison is like is inaccurate

Carbon Emissions And Its Effects On The Environment
Greenhouse gasses (GHGs) pose a serious threat to the environment through acting as a catalyst
for substantial climate change. Carbon Dioxide (CO2), a specific greenhouse gas, is the one that
is the most prominent in our atmosphere; this being the case it is also causing the most damage.
Carbon dioxide is emitted primarily through the burning of fossil fuels, such as oil and coal. These
fossil fuels are burned in power plants and create large amounts of emissions that are not ideal for
the environment. When faced with a problem similar to this one, it is only rational to think that a
particular solution should be implemented. In this case, the solution is a carbon tax. These carbon
taxes would be directed towards the sources of greenhouse gasemissions. Recently, British
Columbia, Canada enacted a carbon tax, it has some strengths and weaknesses, the due has an
effect on the economy, it also needs to be at a certain rate, it has been successful and
unsuccessful, the tax is also has aspects of being revenue neutral and revenue recycling. A
carbon tax as an idea for the reduction of hurtful greenhouse gasses is a brilliant one. Taxes like
this provide a disincentive for certain behaviors, so what better way to reduce pollution? There
are other policies out there, for example cap and trade programs and command and control
regulations, but these are not as strong for reducing greenhouse gas emission. According to David
Brodwin, a writer for U.S. New, a carbon tax would be

Lab We Use A Metal Compass Essay
In lab we used a metal compass to measure and to find our two point threshold acuity. When Dario
was measuring my two point sensitivity, I was blindfolded and had to judge whether or not I felt
one point or two points. We tested these on multiple locations being, the pad of my index finger,
pinky and thumb. We also measured our two point sensitivity on the center of my palm, back of my
hand and the top and bottom of my forearm. We took these measurements by starting the metal
compass at 1mm for each location. The experimenter would incrementally increase the metal
compass after each trial until the participant said they felt two points. The experimenter would then
verify that measurement and would repeat the measurement once again for accuracy. My results for
my two point threshold sensitivity can be found on the table above. However, we found that the
pads of my fingertips had the greatest number of receptive field. This didn t surprise me because it
makes senseto have a greater number of receptive fields in areas that are most predominantly used
for touch. Something that did surprise me though was how few of receptive fields I had on my
palm, back of my hand and on the top and bottom of my forearms. It makes sense that I d have
fewer receptive fields in this area because I don t use this for touch usually but how few of
receptive fields I had in these areas really surprised me. These measurements tell us that the number
of receptive fields are predominantly

In this case, there is a possibility that the financial statements released will dubious since they
might include outdated transactions. There are several barriers that come about with PayPal. A
PayPal classic is the arbitrary freezing of accounts. An account can become frozen fast whenever
there is an indication of any type of fraud. In this case, it implies that there is a possibility of
PayPal suffering immense losses if no risk assessment and mitigation is performed in a timely
manner.
Freezing the accounts should not be the only solution to fraudulent concerns. On the other hand,
freezing accounts gives them time to conduct investigations on potential troubles and correct fraud
in the name of protecting the buyer. PayPal s buyers and sellers have legal protection under the
Consumer Credit Act which provides them with protection regardless of what type of transaction is
completed.
The shares of PayPal are able to be obtained through the same channels that one is able to
purchased or trade eBay shares. With the recent split, the expected prices of the eBay shares are
expected to drop in order for the PayPal shares to come up. That being said, PayPal does not expect
to pay a regular cash dividend which many look forward to when investing in stock. This does not
seem to be a major factor affecting the sale or price of this stock. It has been made known that they
do expect the stock to fluctuate throughout its time on the market.

The Great Gatsby Argumentative Quotes
422726 Prompt 4 Comments The Hunt The human race can never be fully satisfied. There are

Almost all Americans want The American Dream of building up their own wealth, having the
highest social status, and lastly having a picture perfect family. Throughout the novel, The Great
Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, he reveals the truth behind the American dream: it is possible to
build up an empire of wealth, however, Americans can never get to the highest social class unless
born into it, nor can they ever have the ideal, perfect family. James Gatz through hard work and

Gatsby will never truly be as exclusive as the other high class members due to the fact he, along
with the other self made millionaires, are considered newly rich people [who] are just big
bootleggers (107). East Egg is home to the prestigious residents of old money including Tom and
Daisy. West Egg just across the bay is the less fashionable of the two, though this is a most
superficial tag to express the bizarre and not a little sinister contrast between them, which is
home to Nick and Gatsby (5). A distinction between the classes is their source of transportation.
The people of West Egg drive the modern, luxury cars, Gatsby himself included, who drives a
rich cream color, bright with nickel car (64), while the people of East Egg still believe horses
are the best ways for transportation. Old money folk believe horses are the more prestigious
way to travel; Tom being from East Egg has a string of polo ponies from Lake forest (6) giving
him a sense of superiority. Gatsby [hasn t] got a horse (103) since he recently came into his
money, and is more into the modern luxuries the rich have to offer such as cars. The people of
East Egg look down on West Egg residents because in their eyes they are not as good as
themselves. The separation between the two classes cause the American Dream of being a
member of the highest social class to be unreachable for anyone including Gatsby. Not only can
Gatsby not reach the American Dream of being the highest social class, he will also never achieve

Motorcycles, which are a small subset of all motor vehicles, are greatly overrepresented in fatal
motor vehicle accidents. In the United States, the death rate per registered motorcycle (59 per
100,000) is approximately three times the death rate per registered passenger car (17 per
100,000). 77 Mortality rates calculated per vehicle, however, does not take into account the
substantially lower mileage travelled by motorcyclists. Per mile travelled, the mortality rate for
motorcycles is estimated to be 22 times higher than the comparable death rate for passenger

To evaluate the possibility that motorcycle car collisions may occur at higher speeds than car car
collisions, researchers assessed a sample of 109 motorcycle car head on collisions (that is, the
impact speed was the same for the car and the motorcycle) from the same dataset. They found
that the motorcyclists involved were 95.4% likely to be injured while the car drivers were 0.9%
more likely to be injured. The much higher injury rate confirmed that motorcyclists are more
physically vulnerable than those drivers in cars. Overall, the casualty rate (all injury types) is

Comparison Of The Assad And The Syrian Uprising
It is important to note that these two case studies share a number of similarities that are worth
pointing about before emphasizing their distinctiveness. Firstly, both the uprisings in Tunisia as
well as the Syrian conflict both belong to the arena of collective political action, that is rather than
individual acts of political dissent. Secondly, they are employed by organized opposition
movements representing an oppressed minority of the disempowered majority, engaged against the
unjust action of the state and institutionalized violence they exert. Thirdly, each operate outside the

This movement can arguably be seen as the largest challenge to the Assad regime in more than 40
years of their rule. During this period , the regime steadily increased their brutality of backfire,
killing more civilians. What began as peaceful protests turned into demonstrations of tens of
thousands of people across the country by the end of July of 2011. Solidarity among different sects
was evident with people from diverse ethnic, social, and religious backgrounds participating. One of
the activists remarked, no one was thinking of religion, ethnicity, or status. It was all about
demanding freedom and supporting each other. The nonviolent protest movement won government
concessions with the dismissal of the governor of Daraa, the release of hundreds of politics

People like military members, outdoorsman, and engineers. I also heard about the experience of

The rain from that isn t drained gets all over the sidewalk and whoever has to walk there for just

from people I talked to every week made me want to do something about it. I ran for ASB of my

event where two cities compete to raise the most resources for the Coastal Harvest. That is a food
storage facility that donates to food banks across the State of Washington in times of emergency.
The year I was running it the two cities competing were Hoquiam and Aberdeen. Even though

Perowne s Argumentative Essay
Another way in which Perowne changes is evident in the window scenes which demarcates the
disintegration of his invincibility. In the beginning, Perowne believes that to know the boundaries,
is the essence of sanity (2). Thriving on clear limits, Perowne seems myopically focused on the
confines of his home, car, and routine. His view is framed territorially as he looks out onto
Charlotte Street, towards a foreshortened jumble of façades, scaffolding and pitched roofs, Henry
thinks the city is a success, a brilliant invention, a biological masterpiece (3). To Perowne, London

Preventative measures are not good enough either: London, [Perowne s] small part of [the

empathy. Mimicking adages cemented in posterity, McEwan imparts to his readers Arnold s
message in his final stanza that love is the only way to approach a darkling plain (291), a new era
of incertitude and tremendous possibilities. Empathy, as shown through Perowne s compassionate
response to Baxter s intrusion, functions as an imperative that people need to think beyond the
nearsighted landscape of the quotidien. Much like Perowne s nerve endings peeled and stripped

With the milieu of increasing globalization, nurses have a moral responsibility to become global

To: Carl Rausch From: Sukhada Kulkarni RE: Release of Oxyglobin Date: October 30, 2013
The intent of this document is to provide suggestion for the timeline to release Oxyglobin. I
would recommend releasing Oxyglobin to the market as soon as possible. Situation Analysis:
There has been a debate if Oxyglobin release should be delayed by two years as it might
jeopardize the sales of Hemopure. The concern here is that the estimated price of Oxyglobin
($150 per unit) might not allow Hemopure to be released at a higher estimated price as $600 per
unit. As per my analysis this should not be a major concern as the advantages of releasing
outweighs this concern. Here are the reasons why Oxyglobin should be released soon in the market:

Students Should Not Have Dress Codes In Schools
Many teachers and students think we should not have a dress code, and I agree. Studies show
that having a dress code can cause raise of money. Also boys would have to cut their hair to a
certain limit. Finally Muslim girls would get suspended for wearing a headscarf. Those are some
reasons why we shouldn t have a dress code. My opinion on this statement is that students should
not have a dress code in there local schools. I believe this because the students parents money will
increase my a big amount. It is important to realize this because of the wealth of others. Experts
who have studied this topic will show a decrease in the amount of kids in there schools. Many

Peace Written by Aristophanes in 421 BCE
In Aristophanes Peace written in 421 BCE, the automatist utopian trope of food is used to
satirize 5th century Athens, particularly the aristocracy. In the opening scene of the play, two
Athenian slaves are kneading cakes made of dung for the pet dung beetle of their master
Trygaeus (Peace 1 2). Cakes are generally viewed as a decadent treats. However, theses cakes are
not made out of appetizing ingredients but dung. These dung cakes are meant to parody
Athenian obsession with food. After all, scholars agree that Aristophanes lived in a food
obsessed comic world (Compton Engle 326). The dung beetle also appears to serve a role in
satirizing the aristocracy, this beast...no food is good enough unless I first waste a whole day
handling it...Go on, eat the lot, you big shit beast... the gluttonous beast! Look at him (Peace 35
38). In this instance, the beetle will only eat the dung after it has been kneaded into a cake for
one day. It is possible that the dung beetle represents members of the Athenian aristocracy, of
which would be most selective with the preparation of their food. In Peace, the automatist utopian
trope of food is used to satirize war. In an early scene, the comic hero, Trygaeus is overlooking the
god, War, tossing different types of food into his mortar. In this passage, the food that War tosses
into his mortar are meant to be representative of different Greek city states, War:(Takes a bunch of
leeks and drops them into the mortar)

Essay Frank McCourts Angelas Ashes
Frank McCourts Angelas Ashes Frank McCourt s Angela s Ashes is a powerful and emotional
memoir of his life from childhood through early adulthood. This book is a wonderfully inspired
piece of work that emotionally attaches the reader through McCourt s life experiences. Its
effectiveness is primarily due to McCourts evolving innocent eye narrative technique. He allows the
reader to experience his own lifein a changeable form. Through this unique story telling technique,
the reader is able to watch Frank grow and evolve. Between the ages of four, eleven and fourteen
changes in his writing can be easily identified. It is evident that the written text, McCourt s

For instance, he refers to his family standing in the kitchen as big people (106). He is easily
confused and does not understand complex concepts: ...He can have Malachy and the twins for
brothers. He can t have Margaret anymore because she s like the dog in the street that was taken

especially difficult for a child to understand. Mam tells us, That s the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and I
want to know why the man s heart is on fire and why doesn t He throw water on it? (67).
A unique relationship forms between the author and the reader through McCourt s effective show

misunderstandings, that interpretation is needed in order to fully understand the context:
Sometimes he [Mr. Leibowitz] speaks to Mrs. Leibowitz and I don t understand because strange

Here the reader knows that the strange sounds are the Leibowitz s speaking another language. Frank
does not understand that there are different languages that people speak other than just English, but
the mature reader is informed.

Social Structure in the Colosseum
The Ancient Roman Social Structure in the Colosseum
Ancient Rome is one of the greatest and most influential societies in the history of the world. From
the basic rules of how the Roman Empire is set up to the infrastructures in the city, the strict
hierarchy of Roman social structure can be reflected clearly all over the whole ancient Rome. In fact
that public architecture presents people with the official view of a society and provides the
background against which its individual markers live their lives. 1 With the great desire of Roman
for entertainment and their special taste for blood, the amphitheatre is considered as the most
popular and most representative type of the entertainment building in the ancient Roman culture.

The fantastic synthesis of seating arrangement and the order of the use of different style provides a
visual symbol and expression of the concept of the strict hierarchical Roman social structure.
As a matter of fact, the system of entrance and exit of the Colosseum is another important aspect
to explore how significant the impact caused by the Roman social structure on the architecture
design is. Corresponding to strict arrangement of seating, after arriving at the Colosseum, the
spectators are able to find out the specified entrance and exit routs for different social classes.7
Colosseum has an efficient network of vaulted passageways consisting eighty archways serving as
entrance and exit.8 Without a doubt, it is certain that the entrance for the emperor is separated
from the gates opening for the crowds. Among the eighty archways, there is only one special
entrance used by the most powerful men with a great contrast to the public entrance. The walls
leading to the special entrance have rich decoration, such as painting and stuccoes.9 Additionally,
in order to achieve the efficiency as much as possible, the admission tokens 10 with numbers of
the seats are created to enable the public spectators to go directly to the proper entrance for
reaching their own seats .

Analysis Of From Russia With Love
From Russia With Love (1963), directed by Terence Young is the second film in the James Bond
movie franchise. Sean Connery and Robert Shaw headline the film s actors. This film is a spy
thriller with twists and turns and puts James Bond into a position of entrapment and must use his
brains to escape and get back to England alive. From Russia With Love is a timeless classic
through its new standards of filmmaking and characters. This movie also sets the tone for the rest
of the James Bondseries.
The first reason why this film is a classic is because of the introduction of spy gadgets for James
Bond. Bond today is partly known for his use of gadgets to get out of tough situations. This is the
first Bond film that uses these.
When Bond is getting orders to go to Turkey for his mission, he is brought a briefcase that has
hidden knives on the sides and has to be open a different way than normal in order for the opener
of the case not to be sprayed with tear gas. These tools will help him later in the film multiple
when he is in the face of danger.
This scene sets the tone not for just this film but for the many other popular movies of this
franchise through the use of gadgets. A large reason why many people enjoy James Bond is
because of astonishing use of these tools. With help of these gadgets, this movie can be considered
a classic because of the memorable fights in the film.
As with all spy films, there are going to be fight to the death scenes. Although it is predictable
who will win in these films, directors can still make these scenes very suspenseful and exciting.
Young does this exactly in this film with a very memorable fight scene that could be considered
one of the best of all films.
Bond seems to be trapped for good this time when he is in the train car with Donald Grant who
was a gun pointed at Bond. Bond starts talking to Grant and eventually convinces Grant to take
the 50 gold sovereigns. When Grant opens the briefcase, which is given to Bond with spy gadgets,
he is met with a plume of tear gas. This starts the fight as Bond gets up to take the gun. A fight
ensues, going across the small train car and eventually making Bond the winner by killing Grant.
The fight however did

Does Watching TV Make Us Smarter
In his essay, Does Watching TV Make Us Stupid? Nigel Barber argues that the effect of TV on a
child s intelligence has to do with their social class, meaning that children in lower social classes
who watch TV often come to be more intelligent than their counterparts who don t watch TV and
vice versa. Barber then goes onto write that children in more well to do countries become smarter
because they have more access to mass media, which stimulates their brain. So, to answer his title s
question, Barber does not think that TV makes us stupid. There are many opinions on this topic.
Steven Johnson shares his opinion in his essay, Watching TV Makes You Smarter . In his essay
Johnson argues that TV does make us smarter for many reasons. The first being that society is
becoming more demanding in the amount and complexity of the content received from TV shows,
which Johnson calls the Sleeper Curve. With this rise of complexity comes three elements: multiple
threads, flashing arrows, and social networks. All of which Johnson goes into detail about how they
have improved TV over time, making the public smarter. Although there are many similarities
between the two authors there are many more differences. The clearest differences between Barber
s Does Watching TV Make Us Stupid? and Johnson s Watching TV Makes You Smarter are the
titles, generalizations they make, and most importantly what and why they think TV makes us
smarter. The first difference in Barber s and Johnson s

Life of Peru s Indigenous People Essay
Throughout the history of Latin American countries, like Peru there has been dramatic change in
the overall way of life. These changes are largely due to external influences on the international
level such as the Spanish conquest of Andean territories. However no matter whether the process of
change was political, economic, social or cultural, they all have similarities and are interconnected.
These different types of change are closely intertwined and influence one another while linking the
local level of life with foreign (on an (inter)national level) events and forces. Also along with these
changes, some aspects of indigenous life remain stable and continue throughout these external
influences. In this essay I will discuss continuity... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a result the Peruvian indigenous people set up multiple ecological zones along these mountain
sides (slopes) to increase the efficiency of their production. This technique known as verticality let
the people diversify their subsistence strategies and become more self sufficing. This division of
production zones were setup into four distinct production zones. Some of these zones were used
for animal domestication and tuber production while others were used for the production of certain
crops (maize, potatoes, tropical fruits, coca ) that grew best at their zones climatic conditions.
These indigenous people would then travel to different zones throughout the day to manage and
exploit these lands. However the distances between these four zones were extreme in some
measures. Therefore in order to increase traveling efficiency, these people would settle in the
middle of these ecological zones to give each production division adequate attention. Another
important feature of the Incan indigenous agricultural system was water. In order to conserve
water and structure it s usage most efficiently, the people followed the value of equity. They saw
water as a form of common property that belongs to everyone. As a result they handled water
management by abiding to the two specific principles of uniformity and proportionality. The people
controlled and developed the land so that everyone received water with the same frequency.
Therefore if everyone irrigated their

Summary Of Gonad The Barbarian And The Venus Flytrap
Anne McClintock s Gonad the Barbarian and the Venus Flytrap , focuses a lot of attention on how
from the beginning of history, women have been denied some of the basic rights and freedoms
that have been essential to the way that men live. Starting back from the times where they couldn t
vote and when women were basically seen as property when wedded. Women today and even in
the earlier days could not express their sexualityand could not show that they were sexual beings.
Anne McClintock gives the idea that women should be able to have the things that men have
and they should be able to express it in the same way as men. In this essay, I will analyze how
Anne McClintock views pornography as a form of pleasure that is mostly consumed by men and
how women are incorporated into the employment of the industry and even in the home setting.
Anne McClintock first talks about how women s sexuality has always been suppressed in many
cultures and societies around the world. There is a huge focus on making sure that men are taken
care of sexually and that they are able to go out and show their sexuality and not be ashamed of it.
Men are able to enjoy pornography and not feel guilty about enjoying it because it is apart of their
nature. Everyone knows that men masturbate and they are not really shy with talking about it but
when it comes to women it a foreign topic that if talked about makes you seem to promiscuous.
Anne McClintock shares her story of how she leaves South Africa and

This gives them prejudiced views and means they judge each other on their religion. This comes
from generations of dislike which over the years has been distorted into hate. Protestants believe
that Rome, the Pope and the whole of the Catholic Church have a huge say in the running of Eire.
Catholics however deny this and say that although many Catholics will live their life around the
Church and the beliefs of the Catholic Church, the British government allow the Church of England
a much greater say in the running of the country.
Stemming from this lack of knowledge about each other s religion is the problem that
Protestants believe Catholics have no personal freedom. The Catholic Church does not allow
divorce or abortion as they believe marriage is sacred; as is life, so to kill a child or end a
marriage is to go against God. As most Catholics want to lead good lives and follow the teachings
of the Bible and religious leaders, then they agree that divorce and abortion are wrong and so, the
fact that the Irish government says abortion is illegal does not bother them. Protestants living in
Ireland though see this as an infringement upon their freedom and freewill.
Throughout Northern Ireland there are symbols of different loyalties, on one wall will be painted a
mural in memorial of William of Orange and his victory at the Battle of the Boyne over the

The Game Of Soccer Essay
Description Soccer is a sport played with two teams of eleven players on a rectangular grass
field with a ball and typically lasts 90 minutes. The players wear shorts, a short sleeved jersey,
shin guards, long socks, and cleats. Of the eleven players, one is a goalkeeper and the remaining
players are either playing defense, midfield, or forward. The goalkeeper s objective is to stop the
ball from going into his or her team s goal. The other players, using only their feet, must dribble
and pass the ball in order to move it up the field and attempt to place the ball in the opposing
team s goal. In the middle of both short ends of the field, there is a goal, one belonging to each
team.(Swanson) The objective of each team is to place the ball in the goal of the opposing team
to get a point. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins. History There is
evidence tracing soccer back to 2000 BC. At this time, the game was played by the Romans,
Greeks, and Chinese. A leather ball was being dribbled and kicked in a small net or passed
between two people. (History) The game of soccer arrived in England during the medieval times.
During this time, the objective of the game was to move the ball to a specific spot. Violent
strategies such as punching, kicking, and biting were used to slow down the opposing team.
Violent incidents during a soccer match were common. King Edward III of England and King
James I of Scotland banned soccer in 1365 and 1424 respectively due

Why Is Medea Filicide
Argumentative Essay Rough Draft Filicide is the deliberate act in which a parent kills his or her
own children. In Euripides Medea, Medea commits filicide along with murder of a princess.
Medea was married to a man named Jason who divorced her and married the princess, Glauce.
Medea was so upset by this that she killed his new wife and her and Jasons children. When Medeas
quest for revenge leads her to slaughter innocent beings, and some call her justified, but there
are many reasons why this is not the case. Those who believe Medea was just in her murders
agree that Medea was betrayed by Jason in his breaking of marriage oaths, and in order to bring
justice, feels the need to bring suffering to him. Kim Zarins refers to Medea as ВЁa victim of
Jason s false loveВЁ (Zarins 2) Medea loved him so passionately and then hated him so much that

the novel, there is evidence of slight resistance in the beginning. When asked for support for Jack,
with dreary obedience the choir raised their hands (Golding 23). Though the choir supports Jack,
it is important to note that pause. The pause signifies a moment of not only hesitation, but
thought. The shadow of doubt, which ceases to exist further on, has passed over their minds for
a brief moment. In this moment, the boys are free. Too soon, the boys are engulfed in the power
of Jack which rips apart any chance for the boys to think for themselves. Jack says, See? They do
what I want (Golding 179). No matter whether the leader or the follower, each one holds a
responsibility. The leader holds the

Causes Of Human Trafficking In Thailand
Human Trafficking in Thailand
Thailand is located in Southeast Asia, surrounded by numerous of bodies of water, such as the
Andaman Sea, and the Gulf of Thailand. According to the C.I.A website, which is a United States
government website that offers information about different countries and monitors their activities,
Thailand s government was a constitutional monarchy from 1932 to 2005. Thailand experienced
intense government turmoil due to a military coup and several large scale political street protests
from 2008 to 2010 (C.I.A). As a result of the unrest among the citizens, it caused corruption from
the government, which meant that often times human trafficking is overlooked to not only promote
the increase of economy, but also increase the workforces in the country(C.I.A). Reported by The
Global Slavery Index, which is a global organization that conducts research and surveys in various
countries, it shows that, 425,500 people or 0.63% of the total population live in conditions of
modern slavery in Thailand. This creates different national issues such as a human rights violation
and also social issues such as communities being torn apart due to separation of families, but there
are different solutions out there that are easing the challenges of human trafficking. As a nation,
Thailand s economy has been gradually increasing; however, it still faces large national debt and
high unemployment rate overall (C.I.A). This leads to the government trying to find

Gender Themes In The Girl In Blue By Ann Rinaldi
There is a theme in The Girl in Blue by Ann Rinaldi. The theme is that gender does not affect
skill level. The Girl in Blue is set in 1861, and is about a Michigan native by the name of Sarah
Louisa. She is about to be forced to marry a man of her abusive father s choice when she decides
to run away and join the army. She joins the army under the ruse that she is a boy and participates
in the battle of Bull Run but her gender is eventually found out by her doctorand general. She is not
punished for her actions but discharged and sent to work as a spy for the Pinkerton agency. She
is sent to spy on a southern ally who is under house arrest to find out how she is sending messages
to the south. She discovers how and is rewarded with a break. She travels home to find her abusive
father had died and her sister is betrothed to the manshe ran from. She leaves to go back to her job
as a spy and that is where the story ends. Some of the reasons the theme could be gender not
affecting skill level is that first of all the general does not punish her for her actions. Second, she is
sent to work as a spy for a job only a womancould do. Lastly, before she even goes to war she has
to do all the work for the house instead of her father.
When Sarah is discovered as a girl by her doctor and general she is not discharged. This is
because she has shown prowess on the battlefield and in the hospital tent as well. On the
battlefield, she had the courage to shoot a cavalry officer instead of one of the footmen, and she
aimed the shot perfectly at his heart. This shows how she is able to take charge and to stay calm
in a hectic situation. She had the peace of mind to get on a knee aim the gun and fire a fatal shot
to the heart. furthermore, while in both places she had to hide the fact that she was a girl while
surrounded by men. In the hospital she tried not to get sick by taking the bitters which is a
medicine to prevent smallpox so she wouldn t be examined by Dr.Hammond, the doctor at that
hospital tent. Lastly, she volunteers to go a 5 mile trip through some rebel territory to get
morphine for the injured men. This shows how she is dedicated to helping her brothers in arms
who are in need of medical care. This is one

Creeley s Poetry
Thoreau once said, Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity! This is the basis of Creeley s poetry and
parts of his life. He is well known for teaching with the Black Mountain Poets in North Carolina
and leading a poetic style that focuses on the minimization of words that provides a larger effect
for the reader. The simplicity also leads to a very open window to his own feelings without the
poetic labyrinth of rhyme and meter. Creeley s poems fully encompass human strife and the
pondering question of how it should be solved, which relates to his life as it relates to the
twentieth century in areas such as wartime strife, political ideology and lessons in life. First of all,
Creeley really focused on the humanistic aspect of the troubles during... Show more content on

With a lot of his major works coming from times of war as well as golden advancement he did
focus on what was the current political stance of the major parts of the world. He, like many
minds, found communism to be ill fated with nothing coming from it but ruin. The Names ,
published in 1959 is a nod to communism rising in Vietnam. The main government figures, All five
of us...(Creely 3) took their own holds on government together under the name of the dictator and
...sat in the broken seat (Creeley 4) which Creeley would easily say as he noticed the fractures in
the seat of government with ease. His political diction is simplistic yet hitting to the thoughts that
the unspoken wish to speak up. His connects to his life because he associated himself with many
intellectuals which would almost inevitably lead to the world of politics. His primary associations
were with the Black Mountain Poets as well as some figures related to his Harvard education
where he did publish works for a while despite his dislike of the professors due to their cynical
nature. Another example of his political writings would be during 1968 which one poem would
assumedly focus on the peace talks between America and the North Vietnamese and the later
assassination of president Kennedy which took place slightly over a month before the issue of
Poetry that this poem was published for. To Robert he was hoping that the peace talks that were
taking place would lead to the Lake of clear water (Creely 1 I ll be here ) which symbolizes the fate
of the foreign tensions that Creely hoped would be achieved. Why don t you go home and sleep
and come back and talk some more(Creely 5 6) clearly shows his opinion that the peace talks are
essential and his clear hope for a perfect ending. He wants the negotiators to ensure that even after
a night falls they will still seek peace instead of viewing them in a murky way

Bisphenol A in polycarbonate is not a Serious Hazard to...
Is the Bisphenol A in polycarbonate a serious hazard to human health?
Abstract: Polycarbonate, which is a polymer plastic, is found in many bottles and food packaging
around the world. However, because Bisphenol A is used in the processing of it, there is a
potential danger to humans. Bisphenol A is a molecule that is a hormone inhibitor and also mirrors
the function of estrogen. Although the EPA has released a safe level for Bisphenol Aingestion,
recent research has shown that those levels may not be safe for humans. Until further testing is
done, scientists aren t certain of the threshold of BPA intake in humans before dangerous health
effects occur.

However, it is the molecule of Bisphenol A that is causing the most problems with the
polycarbonate.
Bisphenol A s molecular formula is C15H16O2 and a molecular mass of 288.29.
Three million tons of this hazardous polymer is produced yearly1. At room temperature, it is a
white solid and has a phenolic odor. 2 This chemical is an endocrine disrupter, and its presence in
large quantities within the body would probably be fatal. Tests have been done on rats with
exposure to BPA which shows that it raises levels of hormones such as prolactin in both males and
females as well as lowering the level of testosterone. 3 Studies have shown that BPA is comparative
to the estrogen hormone, as supported by those test results on rats. The Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) has set the level of safe exposure to BPA at 50 О
јg/kg/day, but this is
based on research that was done in the
1980s. 4 More recent studies have said that intake at that level would still be seriously

What Dreams Are Essay
What Dreams Are
Dreams, we all have them at one time or another, and in one form or another. They can be
daydreams, when we re awake, wishing and hoping for something more (bigger and better) than
we already have, or the way we hope things should and would be. Next there is the wish, this is
when there is a strong desire for a specific thing, a longing for one particular thing. Then there is
the nightmare. They are the dreams that are very disturbing, full of fear and horror. They are
often a very scary event played out while one is asleep, although we do not know we are asleep.
Dreams are a sequence of images etc. passing through a sleeping persons mind (Webster s 182).

A secretion of our thoughts, and through them our thought is purified (Webster s 155). A daydream
is a passive imagination. If we mistake these imaginings for reality, they would be called
hallucinations (World 67). Daydreams allow one to temporarily escape from reality, to
overcome frustration or satisfy hidden wishes. However when one lives only in his daydreams,
he may have a serious mental disorder. The daydreamer may imagine himself as a hero or
superstar or a highly successful businessman. These daydreams are universal and may actually
help the person s ambition or creativity. Wish, a strong desire and longing for a specific thing
(Webster s 1336). A wish is to hope for something with the expectation of it being fulfilled. We
continue to hope and wish for things all our lives, but it seems Young people have an almost
biological destiny to be hopeful (Digest 49). Our great writers have often used the word wish in
their writings. Shakespeare is often quoted in his work, for instance; Wish vb. Recommended (a
person) to (another), commend to SHR 1. 1. 112. I wish him to her father, SHR 1. 2. 60. To wish
for something is similar to a daydream; however, it is usually for a particular thing, like a bigger
and better house or car. Also a wish can be an illusion where one s perception of reality is mistaken.

Essay on In Defense of Historical Fiction
The genre of historical fiction novels can be subdivided into many categories and often crosses
genres, such as historical mysteries and romances. The traditional definition of the historical
fiction genre is fiction set in the past where the author is writing from research rather than
personal experience. This definition leaves a lot of room for interpretation, controversy, and
contradiction. Critics in the media, even when they praise individual historical novels in their
reviews, somehow manage to turn this praise into criticism of the genre as a whole. In 1950,
author Howard Fast, a historical novelist himself, wrote: This is an era of many historical novels,
few of them good and very few indeed which have more than a nodding... Show more content on

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain is a classic example of a successful historical
fiction novel depicting the life and adventures of youthful boys in the Mississippi River town of
St. Petersburg, Missouri and various locations along the river through Arkansas. Readers of this
novel are confronted with difficult themes such as slavery and revolution in the south before the
Civil War. In chapter 6 of the novel we see Huck s father, Pap, confronted with a finely dressed
and educated free African American. As the man passes Pap states, There, now that s a
specimen. They call that a govment that can t sell a free nigger till he s been in the State six
months. Here s a govment that calls itself a govment, and lets on to be a govment, and thinks it
is a govment, and yet s got to set stock still for six whole months before it can take a hold of a
prowling, thieving, infernal, white shirted free nigger. (Twain 151). This little speech by Pap shows
that he s a blatant racist who treats African Americans as though they are not at all human beings.
This novel is full of authentic points of view from the various characters Huck encounters on his
adventures. Twain uses dialog such as this to educate readers about past conflicts such as the Civil
War and slavery. Although highly controversial, this novel has been used as an educational tool in
English literature classrooms for years. The point is there are numerous historical fiction

Two Historical Figures That Changed America
Two Historical Figures That Changed America In 1786, Shay s Rebellion sparked an uprising
against the Massachusetts legislator, due to the unfair taxes that were placed on the farmer s land.
This would leave the Massachusetts legislator vulnerable, seeing that the legislator could not call
for a militia, considering that the militia was held by Daniel Shay. Nevertheless, a private military
was raised to stop Shay s Rebellion, and George Washington would come out of retirement to
support the military. And to ensure that this incident does not occur again, Alexander Hamilton
would call for the Constitutional Convention in 1787, so that the delegates could form a new
government for the United States. As a result, the Constitution was developed by numerous
philosophical concepts that originated... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

National Bank by relying on the notion of implied powers of the Constitution, indicating that
Hamilton favored loose construction than strict construction. Moreover, Hamilton would become
the founder of the Federalist Party, which called for a strong national government that promoted
economic growth and a strong friendship with Great Britain. Additionally, Hamilton wanted all the
power from the states to transfer to the national government, by having all the states in debt to the
national government. Last of all, Hamilton s philosophy was that the government should benefit the
rich, because Hamilton was inspired by the idea of an aristocratic society, when Hamilton would

  • 6. Comparing Kipling s Invictus And If Invictus (1888) written by William Ernest Henley, and If (1910) written by Rudyard Kipling, are two texts dealing with similar content, that use different styles to help us understand the common theme of living life to the fullest. Invictus explores the main idea of not giving up despite the hardships that come in your way. You can overcome them with perseverance and knowing that only you can control your fate. If is advice on how to lead a good life. It is an inspiring yet cautionary poem on how we should conduct ourselves in certain situations. Invictus is a poem about going through hard times and getting through them with passion and defiance. Henley explores the theme in the first stanza with, Out of the night that covers me, uses ... Kipling s selection of words is simple and suit the poem, especially after discovering that the poem was written for his son, And which is more you ll be a Man, my son! Repetition of words such as If are constantly used to create suspense for every new scene and keeps the audience at the edge of their seats to find out what happens. The repetitive use of you establishes a connection between the poet and the audience. It also makes them feel inspired, as if the poem is directed to them so they feel like they can achieve ... However, most people find that following the steps in order helps give their life a focus and order that addiction had eliminated. These steps include: 1. We admitted that we were powerless over our addiction; that our lives had become unmanageable; In this step, you face the reality of your addiction and come to terms with the fact that your life is out of control. You are preparing yourself to receive the help you need. 2. We came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity; in many ways, this is one of the most important steps: you are surrendering your fate to a Higher Power in order to help restore your life to stability. For many people, giving up this control will be a major challenge. 3. We made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him; giving yourself over to the God of your choice and asking Him for help is a beautiful moment in the 12 step program and one that will give you the strength to succeed. 4. We made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves; total personal honesty is a must in this step. Ross, Lepper Hubbard performed an experiment designed to showcase the perseverance phenomenon by having 60 high school females read suicide notes and judge whether they were real or fictitious. Whether or not the girls would perform above average (24 out of 25 correct), average (17 out of 25 correct) or below average (around 10 out of 25 correct) was decided by the researchers prior to the actual experiment. When the girls were informed how they did, they were then debriefed and told it actually had nothing to do with ability. The researchers apologized but asked the women to fill out a survey rating how well they did compared to the outcome the researcher assigned them to, how many answers they thought an average student would get right on this and then how well they would do if they were given an equal task a second time around. They found that the girls who were told they did exceptionally well still rated themselves as capable of performing to those standards and their overall satisfaction was higher on the questionnaire. Opposite of that, the women who were told they did poorly continued to rate their abilities as poorer even after debriefing took place. Their assessment of performance or ability on the self survey showed the perseverance effect taking place: though they were told they were given false information, they still continued to behave in a manner parallel to that original claim. This is seen when Michael becomes frustrated at numerous attempts from the office employees and Martin to disprove his stereotype of prison and its inmates. Michael leaves the conference room following his prison Mike skit and locks the door from the outside, shouting at everyone in there, There! Now sit there and think about your freedom! Though he is told his idea of what prison is like is inaccurate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Carbon Emissions And Its Effects On The Environment Greenhouse gasses (GHGs) pose a serious threat to the environment through acting as a catalyst for substantial climate change. Carbon Dioxide (CO2), a specific greenhouse gas, is the one that is the most prominent in our atmosphere; this being the case it is also causing the most damage. Carbon dioxide is emitted primarily through the burning of fossil fuels, such as oil and coal. These fossil fuels are burned in power plants and create large amounts of emissions that are not ideal for the environment. When faced with a problem similar to this one, it is only rational to think that a particular solution should be implemented. In this case, the solution is a carbon tax. These carbon taxes would be directed towards the sources of greenhouse gasemissions. Recently, British Columbia, Canada enacted a carbon tax, it has some strengths and weaknesses, the due has an effect on the economy, it also needs to be at a certain rate, it has been successful and unsuccessful, the tax is also has aspects of being revenue neutral and revenue recycling. A carbon tax as an idea for the reduction of hurtful greenhouse gasses is a brilliant one. Taxes like this provide a disincentive for certain behaviors, so what better way to reduce pollution? There are other policies out there, for example cap and trade programs and command and control regulations, but these are not as strong for reducing greenhouse gas emission. According to David Brodwin, a writer for U.S. New, a carbon tax would be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Lab We Use A Metal Compass Essay In lab we used a metal compass to measure and to find our two point threshold acuity. When Dario was measuring my two point sensitivity, I was blindfolded and had to judge whether or not I felt one point or two points. We tested these on multiple locations being, the pad of my index finger, pinky and thumb. We also measured our two point sensitivity on the center of my palm, back of my hand and the top and bottom of my forearm. We took these measurements by starting the metal compass at 1mm for each location. The experimenter would incrementally increase the metal compass after each trial until the participant said they felt two points. The experimenter would then verify that measurement and would repeat the measurement once again for accuracy. My results for my two point threshold sensitivity can be found on the table above. However, we found that the pads of my fingertips had the greatest number of receptive field. This didn t surprise me because it makes senseto have a greater number of receptive fields in areas that are most predominantly used for touch. Something that did surprise me though was how few of receptive fields I had on my palm, back of my hand and on the top and bottom of my forearms. It makes sense that I d have fewer receptive fields in this area because I don t use this for touch usually but how few of receptive fields I had in these areas really surprised me. In this case, there is a possibility that the financial statements released will dubious since they might include outdated transactions. There are several barriers that come about with PayPal. A PayPal classic is the arbitrary freezing of accounts. An account can become frozen fast whenever there is an indication of any type of fraud. In this case, it implies that there is a possibility of PayPal suffering immense losses if no risk assessment and mitigation is performed in a timely manner. Freezing the accounts should not be the only solution to fraudulent concerns. On the other hand, freezing accounts gives them time to conduct investigations on potential troubles and correct fraud in the name of protecting the buyer. PayPal s buyers and sellers have legal protection under the Consumer Credit Act which provides them with protection regardless of what type of transaction is completed. The shares of PayPal are able to be obtained through the same channels that one is able to purchased or trade eBay shares. Scott Fitzgerald, he reveals the truth behind the American dream: it is possible to build up an empire of wealth, however, Americans can never get to the highest social class unless born into it, nor can they ever have the ideal, perfect family. West Egg just across the bay is the less fashionable of the two, though this is a most superficial tag to express the bizarre and not a little sinister contrast between them, which is home to Nick and Gatsby (5). A distinction between the classes is their source of transportation. The people of West Egg drive the modern, luxury cars, Gatsby himself included, who drives a rich cream color, bright with nickel car (64), while the people of East Egg still believe horses are the best ways for transportation. Old money folk believe horses are the more prestigious way to travel; Tom being from East Egg has a string of polo ponies from Lake forest (6) giving him a sense of superiority. Firstly, both the uprisings in Tunisia as well as the Syrian conflict both belong to the arena of collective political action, that is rather than individual acts of political dissent. Secondly, they are employed by organized opposition movements representing an oppressed minority of the disempowered majority, engaged against the unjust action of the state and institutionalized violence they exert. She said she was studying Aeromonas Salmonicida, a bacterium that causes diseases in salmon. She wanted me to use bioinformatics tools to learn about its ability to infect salmon. The goal was to determine if certain aspects of the bacterium could be modified or genetically engineered so the salmon s immune system would be able to respond more efficiently. This lead me down the path of bioengineering, a field of study where genetic material is altered for certain characteristics. After completing the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I also heard about the experience of being homeless. Aberdeen gets very rainy and cold at night, so not having a place to stay is awful. The rain from that isn t drained gets all over the sidewalk and whoever has to walk there for just 10 minutes gets their shoes soggy and moist. Imagine walking around all day and sleeping all night in that! Being homeless also means it harder to afford find food. Hearing these stories from people I talked to every week made me want to do something about it. I ran for ASB of my high school and became the Senior Class President. I used my position to organize foodball, an event where two cities compete to raise the most resources for the Coastal Harvest. That is a food storage facility that donates to food banks across the State of Washington in times of emergency. The year I was running it the two cities competing were Hoquiam and Aberdeen. Even though the name was foodball, it wasn t just food we were collecting. It was also money to donate to and help raise resources for food banks, like socks, shoes, and shirts. I cleaned up after the events, dressed up as a mascot and danced to raise money for several events. I was even able to run an intercity dodgeball game. A game which Aberdeen won. Although Aberdeen didn t beat Hoquiam in the end, we managed to beat the amount of food raised last year. After foodball ended, I decided I wanted to do more. I became a deacon at my church and several times a month I help run the P.A., fix broken things around the church with my dad, and count and collect offering. In the beginning, Perowne believes that to know the boundaries, is the essence of sanity (2). Thriving on clear limits, Perowne seems myopically focused on the confines of his home, car, and routine. His view is framed territorially as he looks out onto Charlotte Street, towards a foreshortened jumble of faГ§ades, scaffolding and pitched roofs, Henry thinks the city is a success, a brilliant invention, a biological masterpiece (3). Mimicking adages cemented in posterity, McEwan imparts to his readers Arnold s message in his final stanza that love is the only way to approach a darkling plain (291), a new era of incertitude and tremendous possibilities. Empathy, as shown through Perowne s compassionate response to Baxter s intrusion, functions as an imperative that people need to think beyond the nearsighted landscape of the quotidien. • 23. Peace Written by Aristophanes in 421 BCE In Aristophanes Peace written in 421 BCE, the automatist utopian trope of food is used to satirize 5th century Athens, particularly the aristocracy. In the opening scene of the play, two Athenian slaves are kneading cakes made of dung for the pet dung beetle of their master Trygaeus (Peace 1 2). Cakes are generally viewed as a decadent treats. However, theses cakes are not made out of appetizing ingredients but dung. These dung cakes are meant to parody Athenian obsession with food. After all, scholars agree that Aristophanes lived in a food obsessed comic world (Compton Engle 326). The dung beetle also appears to serve a role in satirizing the aristocracy, this beast...no food is good enough unless I first waste a whole day handling it...Go on, eat the lot, you big shit beast... the gluttonous beast! Look at him (Peace 35 38). In this instance, the beetle will only eat the dung after it has been kneaded into a cake for one day. It is possible that the dung beetle represents members of the Athenian aristocracy, of which would be most selective with the preparation of their food. In Peace, the automatist utopian trope of food is used to satirize war. In an early scene, the comic hero, Trygaeus is overlooking the god, War, tossing different types of food into his mortar. In this passage, the food that War tosses into his mortar are meant to be representative of different Greek city states, War:(Takes a bunch of leeks and drops them into the mortar)

Sean Connery and Robert Shaw headline the film s actors. This film is a spy thriller with twists and turns and puts James Bond into a position of entrapment and must use his brains to escape and get back to England alive. From Russia With Love is a timeless classic through its new standards of filmmaking and characters. This movie also sets the tone for the rest of the James Bondseries. The first reason why this film is a classic is because of the introduction of spy gadgets for James Bond. Bond today is partly known for his use of gadgets to get out of tough situations. This is the first Bond film that uses these. When Bond is getting orders to go to Turkey for his mission, he is brought a briefcase that has hidden knives on the sides and has to be open a different way than normal in order for the opener of the case not to be sprayed with tear gas. These tools will help him later in the film multiple when he is in the face of danger. Barber then goes onto write that children in more well to do countries become smarter because they have more access to mass media, which stimulates their brain. So, to answer his title s question, Barber does not think that TV makes us stupid. There are many opinions on this topic. Steven Johnson shares his opinion in his essay, Watching TV Makes You Smarter . In his essay Johnson argues that TV does make us smarter for many reasons. The first being that society is becoming more demanding in the amount and complexity of the content received from TV shows, which Johnson calls the Sleeper Curve. With this rise of complexity comes three elements: multiple threads, flashing arrows, and social networks. All of which Johnson goes into detail about how they have improved TV over time, making the public smarter. Although there are many similarities between the two authors there are many more differences. Some of these zones were used for animal domestication and tuber production while others were used for the production of certain crops (maize, potatoes, tropical fruits, coca ) that grew best at their zones climatic conditions. The players wear shorts, a short sleeved jersey, shin guards, long socks, and cleats. Of the eleven players, one is a goalkeeper and the remaining players are either playing defense, midfield, or forward. The goalkeeper s objective is to stop the ball from going into his or her team s goal. The other players, using only their feet, must dribble and pass the ball in order to move it up the field and attempt to place the ball in the opposing team s goal. In Euripides Medea, Medea commits filicide along with murder of a princess. Medea was married to a man named Jason who divorced her and married the princess, Glauce. Medea was so upset by this that she killed his new wife and her and Jasons children. When Medeas quest for revenge leads her to slaughter innocent beings, and some call her justified, but there are many reasons why this is not the case. Those who believe Medea was just in her murders agree that Medea was betrayed by Jason in his breaking of marriage oaths, and in order to bring justice, feels the need to bring suffering to him. Kim Zarins refers to Medea as ВЁa victim of Jason s false loveВЁ (Zarins 2) Medea loved him so passionately and then hated him so much that she was unaware of except her desire for vengeance. Regardless of Jack s self serving manners, in order to ensure their own security, the boys blindly trust and give power to Jack. The boys are forced to blindly trust Jack. It is in human nature to either lead or to follow and Jack refuses to do the latter. Although the boys follow Jack throughout the novel, there is evidence of slight resistance in the beginning. When asked for support for Jack, with dreary obedience the choir raised their hands (Golding 23). Though the choir supports Jack, it is important to note that pause. The pause signifies a moment of not only hesitation, but thought. The shadow of doubt, which ceases to exist further on, has passed over their minds for a brief moment. In this moment, the boys are free. Too soon, the boys are engulfed in the power of Jack which rips apart any chance for the boys to think for themselves. Jack says, See? • 41. Gender Themes In The Girl In Blue By Ann Rinaldi There is a theme in The Girl in Blue by Ann Rinaldi. The theme is that gender does not affect skill level. The Girl in Blue is set in 1861, and is about a Michigan native by the name of Sarah Louisa. She is about to be forced to marry a man of her abusive father s choice when she decides to run away and join the army. She joins the army under the ruse that she is a boy and participates in the battle of Bull Run but her gender is eventually found out by her doctorand general. She is not punished for her actions but discharged and sent to work as a spy for the Pinkerton agency. She is sent to spy on a southern ally who is under house arrest to find out how she is sending messages to the south. She discovers how and is rewarded with a break. She travels home to find her abusive father had died and her sister is betrothed to the manshe ran from. She leaves to go back to her job as a spy and that is where the story ends. Some of the reasons the theme could be gender not affecting skill level is that first of all the general does not punish her for her actions. Second, she is sent to work as a spy for a job only a womancould do. Lastly, before she even goes to war she has to do all the work for the house instead of her father. When Sarah is discovered as a girl by her doctor and general she is not discharged. This is because she has shown prowess on the battlefield and in the hospital tent as well. On the battlefield, she had the courage to shoot a cavalry officer instead of one of the footmen, and she aimed the shot perfectly at his heart. This shows how she is able to take charge and to stay calm in a hectic situation. She had the peace of mind to get on a knee aim the gun and fire a fatal shot to the heart. furthermore, while in both places she had to hide the fact that she was a girl while surrounded by men. In the hospital she tried not to get sick by taking the bitters which is a medicine to prevent smallpox so she wouldn t be examined by Dr.Hammond, the doctor at that hospital tent. Lastly, she volunteers to go a 5 mile trip through some rebel territory to get morphine for the injured men. The traditional definition of the historical fiction genre is fiction set in the past where the author is writing from research rather than personal experience. This definition leaves a lot of room for interpretation, controversy, and contradiction. Critics in the media, even when they praise individual historical novels in their reviews, somehow manage to turn this praise into criticism of the genre as a whole. In 1950, author Howard Fast, a historical novelist himself, wrote: This is an era of many historical novels, few of them good and very few indeed which have more than a nodding... In chapter 6 of the novel we see Huck s father, Pap, confronted with a finely dressed and educated free African American. As the man passes Pap states, There, now that s a specimen.
