- The document provides guidance on creating an effective curriculum vitae (CV) for American job applications.
- It emphasizes including key contact information at the top, relevant work experience and accomplishments, and limiting the CV to 1-2 pages. Nonessential personal details like photos or marital status should be avoided.
- Examples are given of effective versus ineffective ways to format and describe work history, education, skills, and references. Focus should be on quantifying achievements rather than just listing job duties.

I'M GOING TO TELL YOU HOW TO GET A JOB WITH AMERICAN OR OTHER LARGE COMPANIES.
HOW MAY PEOPLE SAY “I WANT WORK?” HOW MANY SAY “GIVE ME A JOB?”
NO ONE “GIVES” YOU A JOB.
WE’RE GOING TO SHARE TIPS AND STRATEGIES TODAY, BUT THEY ARE NOT MAGIC. YOU HAVE TO THINK, YOU HAVE TO WORK.
We have a vacancy. We want to fill it. We want to find the right candidate. We’re going to advertise the position, and we know we’re going to get hundreds of CVs. Will yours stand out?
If I am interested in you after looking over your CV, the FIRST THING I WILL DO IS TRY AND FIND YOU ON LINKEDIN! And then I will see a good picture of you.
This might be really important when applying for a job with the Government of Tanzania. But NOT for a job with an American Corporation!
LEAVE THESE STATEMENTS FOR YOUR COVER LETTER.
AND DON'T COPY AND PASTE BLA BLA BLA
BETTER TO WRITE ABOUT A SPECIFIC SKILL IN YOUR COVER LETTER! (WHICH WE'LL TALK ABOUT LATER)
ACTUAL CVS I GOT IN LAST MONTH. DIDN'T KNOW TANZANIANS WERE SO INTERESTED IN READING AND TRAVELING.
For Tanzanian businesses, it might be important that you show people who know you like Baba Mdogo here. For most corporations, we will ask you for RELEVANT references AFTER THE INTERVIEW AND IF WE ASK… a former co-worker, or supervisor. Not just someone who knows you.
I HAVE 35 YEARS EXPERIENCE MY CV FITS ON 2 PAGES
Remember, we want to scan your CV in just a few seconds. Make everything count. Use the space well, and try to keep it on one page. We have a template online you can get, with this format. Go ahead and use it.
I WILL SEARCH YOU ON LINKED IN!
I know it’s your CV. It doesn’t need to say that. Plus stacking like this just takes up way too much room on the page.
DON’T PUT EDUCATION FIRST, PUT WORK EXPERIENCE FIRST.
Start date to end date – “present” if you are currently employed Remember, we are scanning fast. Name of business. with a description underneath.
Let’s say I worked for a company called TUMBO HOLDINGS, WHO HAS EVER HEARD OF IT? IS IT A BIG COMPANY? STARTUP? MOM & POP?
SO ADD A SHORT DESCRIPTION THAT TELLS US SOMETHING.
Remember this isn't a magic bullet. I don't want to see a 1,000 CVs with "fast-growing" company.
Now, we want to find out what you did there. Maybe your title is “Accounts Administrator” -- you might think we know what that is, but maybe we don’t. So you want to tell us what you did, what you accomplished, not your daily task list or detailed job description.
Give examples
Instead of “filed documents” what kind of files?
show “worked in a team of 5” or “worked independently”
Here’s an actual example, and it’s not TERRIBLE. Too many tasks, and no context. What is this job about? What did this person do? What else don’t we know? How many items did he keep track of? Was it 10 or 100 or 1,000? Was this kind of important or extremely important to the company? Did he have a track record without a stock out? That’s what I mean by what you did, not your list of duties.
Plus my favorite! “performs other duties as assigned” – that’s in every job description, including the President of the Country!
HOW MANY ITEMS
HOW MANY VENDORS
AND WHY? WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS JOB?
DO YOU THINK STOCKOUTS ARE IMPORTANTS?
So you don’t have any work experience? VOLUNTEER!
Assuming you have work experience, just show your relevant education.
Please don’t list all these certifications.
Assuming you have work experience, just show your relevant education.
Assuming you have NO work experience, then you need to show more detail in your school work. Show what projects you worked on, leadership skills.
DO NOT SEND PAGES OF CERTIFICATES!
Assuming you’ve spent all this time in school getting advanced degrees, you don’t need to list your secondary education.
EXCEPTION TO THE RULE!
Assuming you are applying for a job as a test pilot or getaway driver.
I understand that English is a second language. Take your time! Check your spelling. Nothing destroys your credibility more than mistakes that are easily correctable.
PARTY TIME JOB -- I WANT ONE
"LIKE A CUSTOMER CARE"?
FAST LEANER?
Do NOT save your CV as “CV” or “Curriculum Vitae” – be memorable. You can’t just fill in the blanks. You have to think. You have to customize. This is hard work, not a magic bullet. You cannot just copy and paste. We can see through it. Don’t blindly send out your CV to every vacancy you see – don’t apply for positions you aren’t qualified for.
DO THE WORK. IT WILL PAY OFF.
THERE ARE JOBS OUT THERE. GO GET THEM. THEY WON’T COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT.
