Effective ResumesEffective Resumes
Preparing a good resume (sometimes called a CV, which stands for
curriculum vitae) for potential employers to see is a crucial step in a successful job
search, and is something that can make the difference between getting the desired
interview or not. Your resume is a representation of all you have done or
accomplished in your professional and educational life, and it should be thought of
as a kind of marketing tool that will likely precede a personal meeting with a
potential employer.
2
General ConsiderationsGeneral Considerations
• Employer’s Use of Resumes
• Length- 1-2 pages
• Goals- You are trying to sell yourself
• Writing style should be as concise as
possible
• Layout and appearance is crucial!
Employers will use resumes as a way of deciding the people they will
call in for an interview- your resume, therefore, is literally the foot in the door of the
job you are trying to get. Without a strong and well-written resume, you are going to
have a very difficult time of distinguishing yourself from the dozens (or hundreds!) of
candidates that are competing for the same position. An employer is likely to skim a
stack of resumes very quickly, tossing aside the ones that don’t measure up. You
may not have much control over this process, but at least you can be sure you’ve
put together the best possible resume you can at that particular point in your career.
A good resume should be either one or two pages, and rarely ever
any more. It should also not be less than a page, as this doesn’t reflect well on your
skills or experience. If you do need to use two pages, the second page should be at
least more than half filled- if you are at a page and a quarter, for example, look for a
way to condense your writing or layout to make one full page. Be sure also to
include your name on the second page, just in case it gets separated from the first.
Your basic goal in writing in resume, and what you should always
keep in mind, is that you are trying to sell yourself to a potential employer. Why
should this company hire you? What do you have to offer in terms of your skills and
experience? This is your chance to put your best foot forward and convince
someone of why you are the person that is best for the job. You are not boasting-
you are simply advertising plainly and truthfully what you have to offer.

The writing style of a resume should be very concise and spare. A
resume normally uses short phrases and fragments. Note that you are not using the

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

13. Types of Resume
1) Chronological resume: A chronological resume starts by
listing your work history, with the most recent positions
listed first. Because it focuses on most recent work
experiences, it is considered one of the most common
resume structures.
Employers typically prefer this type of resume because it's
easy to see what jobs you have held and when you have
worked at them. As a result, this structure works well for job
seekers with a strong working background.
14. 2) Functional Resume: A functional resume focuses on your skills and
experience, rather than on your chronological work history. It is
typically used by job seekers who are changing careers or who have
gaps in their employment history.
Functional resumes are ideal for people new to the workforce,
looking to change career paths or who are applying for a job with
very specific requirements and characteristics in mind.
This is different from a traditional resume that displays a timeline
of reverse chronological work experience with brief explanations of
each job. As a result, the focus is shifted from the amount of time
that has passed to the actual skills the applicant possesses.
15. 3) Combination Resume: A combination resume lists your skills
and experience first. Your employment history is listed next in
chronological order. When you use a combination resume you
can highlight the skills you have that are relevant to the job
you are applying for, and also provide the chronological work
history that employers prefer
Combination resumes can be used to show the employer your
most relevant skills, while still documenting your work
history. This resume format is also a good way of answering
the reader’s questions about career changes, gaps in work
history and other potential red flags.
16. Elements of a Strong Resume
The Basics — Your summary statement should consist of a title and a few lines of text.
The text can be in paragraph form and/or use bullets. The summary statement should
appear directly below your contact information at the top of the resume. and should
reflect a general (or specific) idea of your career goals.
Your Title —a title must communicate the professional identity. Think of it as a
headline that will catch the reader’s eye and help them see your fit for the position at
hand.
Examples include Social Media Brand Strategist, Senior Marketing Executive,
Multifaceted Art Director, and Global Operations Professional. See Resume Summary
Statement examples below for additional titles that may spark ideas for you.
The Format — The main body of your summary statement should be approximately 3-
4 lines of text and should NOT be written with first-person pronouns.
If you are tempted to make your summary statement longer to squeeze in more
details, resist the temptation. Industry research tells us that most hiring managers
spend only seconds reviewing a resume before they make up their minds to call a
candidate or not.
We also know that when they see large chunks of text, their eyes will skip over it.
Therefore, it is vital to limit the length of a summary statement to ensure it gets
read.
17. COVER LETTER
Ensure that you don't have a generic cover letter for all job requirements.
It is very necessary to modify it according to the job requirement. If you
do not want to take the load of modifying the letter every time you send
out a job application, your chances of getting a job also become bleak.
Try to find out the recruiters name, if possible and address the cover
letter to him/ her otherwise address it to the Hiring Manager.
Come straight away to the subject without beating around the bush. The
subject of the cover letter should clearly state its purpose. For e.g.
Application for the position of Marketing Manager (Ref:____).
Give a brief introduction about yourself and the reference to the job
notification to which you are responding.
In the next paragraph mention how does your candidature fit into the
requirements of the notified job opening. May be you can pick up 4-5
important points from the job profile and write about your qualifications
opposite to them.
End the letter with a courteous note and ask them to feel free to let you
know if they need any further information about your candidature.

20. Points to be precautioned / taken care of while preparing a cover
letter
Following are the points that need to be taken care of while
making a cover letter:-
Do accentuate what you can offer the company, not what you hope to gain
from them.
Avoid over-using personal ‘I’ and do not give personal story.
Avoid grandiose such as for example- “marketing is in my blood and I
believe that I am genetically pre- determined to enter the marketing world.”
Understand the job content before drafting the letter. Carefully design the
opening para.
Do not use slang, be yourself and reflect your personal style.
If you expect to move and change address shortly, give the new
address(moving after/ on………….)
Refer to the specific advertisement as well as the post applied for. Some
companies might have released several advertisements for different jobs.
Letter must be signed and also the bio-data. This indicates all the
information given in the bio- data is authentic.
21. Filling in a prescribed Application Form
Some companies get resume in a prescribed application blank as it provides
information on all points they need and in particular sequence. So attention needs
to be given on the following points:-
• Read all columns carefully before writing down.
• Form columns to be filled. Points that are not applicable to you, the notation ‘NA’
may be filled.
• For questions with yes/no answers, blot the one not applicable.
• Keep handy copy of your certificates, testimonial handy to fill correct dates.
• Mention very clearly the position you are applying for. Write it at the top of the
application if space is not provided.
• Where asked, a passport sized photograph must be provided, which should
show you cheerful and alert.
• All supporting documents as requested must be stapled with the form.
• Application must be signed.
• Remember to retain a photocopy of the applicant as it helps you not to contradict
yourself in the interview.
22. CONCLUSION
A Resume or a CV is always called as the face of the job
seeker.
Due care must be taken while preparing your Resume as it is
an indirect way whereby you are presenting yourself to the
interviewer without confronting him before your interview.
Each and every element whether it is heading, career
objectives, educational background, work experience,
achievements or References must contain only true and
relevant information.
23. Conti……
It must be so concise and accurate that it is easier for the
employer for quick reading.
It must attract positive attention.
Always use a high quality laser printer for the final version of
the resume.
Tenses do play an important role so the opening and closing
of Resume must be simple past tense such as read, attended,
look forward, hope.
The body has to be in present perfect tense like my degree
has provided exposure to ………. Etc.
