Chamilo 2.0 is a second generation open source e-learning and collaboration platform being developed by the Chamilo Association as an improvement over Chamilo 1.8.x. It features an object-oriented repository that allows for reusable and shareable objects across the platform. This new structure addresses limitations of the previous course-centric model and facilitates integration with other applications and repositories. The Chamilo 2.0 software kernel and standard modules are largely complete, while further work remains on interfaces, roles/rights, evaluation tools, and performance. The goal is to release a pre-production version in December 2010 and continue evolving the platform in a flexible way.
In technology, free software like Chamilo makes collaboration possible to evolve and create a more equal and fair world. Chamilo is a learning management system that improves informal learning efficiency, learning monitoring, document management, and course availability while reducing costs and training times. Chamilo originated from Claroline and Dokeos and is now on version 1.9.2, adding new functionalities like responsive design, Google calendar integration, course catalogs, and certificates.

Using Drupal in education: strategies, standalone vs collaboration
==============
There is no simple solution to cover all the challenges that education is currently facing. The number of software applications that are currently on the market are addressing only fraction of requested features. After extensive research and the number of specialized and customized projects for universities, we set the goal to create LMS that education sector is craving for.
This session will address:
- history of education software including current education software leaders (open source and others)
- education software approaches: collaborative (using LMS with Drupal) versus standalone (can Drupal be an LMS?)
- LMS for Drupal 8

eMadrid 2015 27 01(UC3M) Michael Amigot - Digital badges and latest innovatio...eMadrid network
The document discusses digital badges and recent innovations on the Open edX platform. It notes that digital badges recognize and verify students' achievements and skills over time, acting as micro-credentials. Badges can increase student engagement and provide independent learners proof of their accomplishments, even if students do not complete courses. Employers are increasingly accepting badges from MOOCs and open courses. The Open edX platform is moving in the direction of badges and has also added features like full translation into Spanish, a shopping cart integrated with PayPal, hosting external content from platforms like WordPress, enhanced graphics, accelerated course production, and Q&A support.
Open edX and Moodle are two educational platforms designed for different objectives and needs. Open edX was originally developed by edX to host Massive Open Online Courses and smaller classes. It is best suited for massive online capabilities. Moodle is a learning management system that enables educators to create private websites for courses and extends learning anywhere. It allows for more individualized attention. Both platforms have extensive functionality and communities, but the choice depends on educational approaches and business models.
This document discusses the benefits of open education and online collaboration. It notes that open courses can create positive feedback loops for students, improve writing and reflection, and allow students to engage with course content on their own time. Open courses build content once that can be tweaked as needed. They also enable students to engage others outside the class, including professionals. The document provides examples of open courses from local universities and Harvard and lists over 700 free online courses from top universities. It discusses using tools like WordPress, Blogger and Tumblr for open courses rather than traditional learning management systems. Finally, it addresses what defines an open course and how open courses can promote collaboration through discussion.
When Your LMS Doesn't Cut It: 6 Scenarios for Open edX in Corporate TrainingEdward Daciuk
When you want to incorporate adaptive, competency based, experiential, social or constructivist learning, Open edX may be the right fit. It supports, or can be extended for, newer approaches to online training that legacy LMS systems tend to struggle with.
Eric Bachard presents on OOo4Kids, an OpenOffice.org version tailored for children aged 7-12. OOo4Kids is a lighter, faster version of OpenOffice.org that removes features like Base and Java to run well on older, less powerful machines commonly found in schools. It was created in response to requests from teachers for a simpler interface that focuses on the core applications needed for education. Contributors can get involved by using the project's wiki, mailing lists, or IRC channel.
Moodle is an open-source course management system that allows educators to create online courses. It provides tools for delivering course content, enabling communication between users, and recording students' online activities. Some key features include uploading materials, online discussions, quizzes and assignments. The document then demonstrates how to use Moodle by reviewing the interface and showing how to add content and activities.
Moodle: using an open learning management system to support student learningKeith Landa
The document discusses Moodle, an open source learning management system (LMS) that is widely used around the world. It provides an overview of Moodle's features and how it can support teaching and learning. Some key benefits highlighted include it being cost-effective with no licensing fees, having a robust set of activities and resources, and having a flexible open architecture that allows for integration with other systems and tools.
- OOo4Kids is a project to create a lightweight version of OpenOffice.org dedicated for children ages 7-12 to use on older or less powerful machines.
- The current version runs on Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows and has already won an award. It was created in response to requests from teachers needing simpler software for students.
- The project aims to shift education to focus more on skills than vendors, make open-source software more accepted in schools, and allow students to collaborate more with teachers on new features.
Seat eXchanger: The Mobile, Open Source, Web App that Facilitates Flexible Mu...Rich McCue
A significant problem facing Multi-Access courses with a limited number of face-to-face and online seats, is accommodating students who want or need to move between modalities without imposing an onerous administrative burden on instructors. One possible solution is the Seat eXchanger mobile web app under development in the TIE Lab at the University of Victoria. The Seat eXchanger app allows students to reserve and exchange of “seats,” depending on availability, and move seamlessly between modalities. At the beginning of the semester students indicate their primary mode of participation in the course, and then as needed or desired during the semester, they can use the web app to reserve a “seat” in a different modality for a session. For example if a student whose primary modality is face-to-face, wants to attend via remote video, they use the web app to reserve a virtual seat, which frees up their face-to-face “seat” in for someone else to use. The project roadmap includes:
- Release of source code under an Open Source license to allow others to contribute code and documentation back to the project.
- Integration with Moodle for authentication and seamless access for students.
- Waitlist functionality for students to add themselves to a waitlist if no seats are available in their desired modality for a session.
During this session, we will briefly demonstrate typical use cases for the software from the administrator and user perspectives, and then engage participants in a discussion about future functionality, features, and opportunities to contribute to the project.
Moodle is an interactive learning management system that allows teachers full control over courses. It offers many features to facilitate teaching and learning, including forums, quizzes, assignments, chats and surveys. Activities can be graded and viewed individually or collectively. Student participation is logged for teacher analysis. Moodle aims to make online learning engaging through creative use of its flexible tools.

On Using Cloud Computing to Support Online CoursesGermán Moltó
This document summarizes the experience of transitioning a biannual face-to-face course on Cloud Computing into a fully online asynchronous course using Cloud Computing tools. The online course saw dramatically more students from more countries complete the course while maintaining a high satisfaction rate. Cloud services from Amazon Web Services, Google Apps, and others were used to deploy remote labs, automate feedback collection, and support over 230 students from 8 countries in an always-open online format. The success of the online transition demonstrates that Cloud services can effectively support high-quality online education at a large scale.
The document discusses the offline features of the Moodle Mobile app. It describes how data is stored locally to enable offline access to course materials, including resources like files, pages, and SCORM activities. Certain activities and course features can also be accessed offline if previously visited. While offline interactions are not currently supported, future plans aim to allow actions like forum posts and assignments to be saved and synchronized when the user is back online.
The document discusses online training courses and MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) as effective ways for lifelong learning. It provides examples of popular MOOC platforms like Coursera and edX that offer courses from top universities. The author shares their positive experience taking the "Full Stack Web Development" specialization on Coursera, developing a capstone project using technologies like AngularJS, NodeJS, and MongoDB. They provide tips for getting the most out of online courses by setting goals, dedicating time for study, and applying what is learned.

Samba Training Platform
· Open-source alternatives
· Microsoft Active Directory
· Integrated with Microsoft Windows
Pros
· The limitations you will face will be the technical challenges of your skills and knowledge.
· Tinkering with open source stuff is fun.
· The investment is in time, not money.
· Kerberos is a hard requirement of Active Directory but fortunately, it’s seamlessly integrated in Samba.
· Samba is in productive use in large environments. Support 100,000+ users in a domain planned for Samba 4.11
· Linux members are supported through Winbind.
Cons
· Samba at the time of writing only supports Active Directory Functional Level 2008R2.
· Plans are in place by Samba developers to support more features and functional levels soon.
· The Active Directory Administrative Center will not work as it relies on Active Directory Web Services.
· This will have no impact on operations as we are not using this feature. If ADUC and ADSI Edit work there is very minor loss of functionality.
· File replication does not work automatically (GPO, logon scripts), but there are workarounds.
· Lack of manufacturer support.
