Subjugation Of Women In The Good Earth By Pearl S. Buck
It is not an unknown topic that men are seen to be higher ranking or superior than women in society, in
history and even today. Women can be considered weak or less intelligent than men; they have a lower
pay rate and are not taken seriously in the work place. In some countries, women are not allowed to
drive or own their own property or house. They are forced to cover themselves from head to toe by
their husband or father. The issue of subjugation of women all over the world, from the past and the
present, is one important theme delivered in The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck. The principal character
in the novel, Wang Lung, starts out as a poor farmer living in Ancient China who gained his wealth
from his land. His wife O lan is one of the many female characters who are treated poorly and are held
in lower status than men by not only Wang Lung, but other men and all of society.
To start with, O lan, Wang Lung s wife, was a very selfless, quiet, hardworking woman who was a
house slave in the House of Hwang, a very rich powerful family. Wang Lung then married her and she
lived on his farm. It is overlooked by Wang Lung throughout the novel how much she has done for
him and their family. Before Wang Lung met O lan, he wanted a wife that will act like a servant and
will deprive him of any responsibilities, and that is exactly what he got. She cleaned the house, took
care of Wang Lung s father and the children, and worked in the fields as well. She is, however, the

Northwest Ordinance Essay
Do you know what the northwest territory ordinance is? The northwest ordinance, was a plan that
would allow the U.S to expand its boundaries out to the Pacific, it was adopted on july 13 1787. That
plan was made by the second Continental Congress. Before the northwest ordinance plan was in
motation there was another plan also made my the Continental Congress Resolution on Public Lands.
The northwest territory ordinance was the first ordinance made. It was made to get all the states north
of the ohio river and west of Pennsylvania to become part of the union. The northwest ordinance not
only added more states but it also provided a stronger government. There was a bill of rights that came
with this ordinance that made the government a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It also influenced how the United States is set up today. The ordinance guaranteed that the new states
would get treated the same as the original 13 states.
The northwest ordinance didn t just makes the 5 states part of the union but it also became the slave
free states. So slave that got released or free could go to any of those 5 states and live a normal life.
Some people would take the slaves papers and rip them up and send them back to the slave states to
make money. So that made it hard for the slaves to live a new normal life.
The troubles they had with this treaty was how divide the land into states. Because the population had
to reach 60,000 to become a statehood. But once that happened they divided the land north of the ohio
river into 5 states. The bill of rights played a important role in the northwest ordinance. It provided a
method for admitting new states to the Union from the territory, and listed a bill of rights guaranteed
in the territory. It also provides rights for the people living in one of the 5 states.
The Second Continental Congress was a convention of delegates from the Thirteen Colonies. It started
meeting in the spring of 1775. The Second Continental Congress was also what issued the

Mbuti Pygmies Research Paper
Very simply, depth perception, is the ability to see things in three dimensions and to perceive how near
or far away people and objects are. One way humans perceive depth is by having eyes that are spaced
a little bit apart, this is contrary to certain animals that tend to be prey, and have evolved so that their
eyes are on either side of their head to enable them to spot predators. Predator animals, on the other
hand, usually have eyes positioned closely together, like humans, to enable them to spot, chase, and
swoop down upon prey. The basis for depth perception is founded around the brains usage of both
monocular and binocular cues. Monocular cues are used when looking at objects with one eye closed,

Turnbull and Kenge stumbled across an interesting observation. Kenge was unable to grasp the
concept of depth perception beyond approximately one hundred feet. While standing in an opening at
the edge of the forest, Kenge did not understand what the mountains in the distant foreground were.
Not only did Kenge experience a lack of adaptation to a primary sensory complex, his culture did not
provide for adequate language skills to describe the thought processes going through his mind when
standing up close to the mountains. Later while visiting the mountains Dr. Turnbull and Kenge
observed a herd of bison in the far off distance, Kenge was unaware the type of insects he was
observing. Dr. Turnbull explained that they were actually bison and not only were they bison but they
were much larger than the ones Kenge had been exposed to throughout his life. This was pure
nonsense in Kenge s eyes, he would later have issues understanding the same concept with a boat.
Only after repeated expose to such instances did Kenge start to process the cues of depth perception
and question his limited senses that had developed throughout his early

Compare And Contrast Middle Colonies And New England Colonies
During the seventeenth century, Europeans established colonies in North America. The English
colonies were originally established because proprietors from England were granted charters to govern
lands. Other European colonies were established around trading posts. Over time, the English gained
control of the thirteen colonies through force or purchase; eventually, the regions were known as the
Southern, Middle, and New England Colonies. Although both New England and Southern colonies
share several commonalities, they differ in how they treat women, Africans, their religion, and their
government. Both colonial sections have unique ways of how they treat Africans. New England had
very few slaves considering the infertile soil and cool climate. ... Show more content on

They both had more rights than they would if they had stayed in England. In both colonies the women
knew how to take care of the sick and practiced medicine. Although this is true, in the New England
colonies, widows can own properties, while in the Southern colonies they need a man to have
property. Besides religion, the treating of women is one of the biggest similarities the colonies have.
Both colonies differ tremendously in their government. In the New England colonies, they were
mostly self governed. They had town meetings, where people could speak out and state their own
opinions. These people could also vote for who would represent them. In the South, counties were
basic unit. They had sheriffs and a justice of the peace. All of the colonies started out as royal
colonies, but New England colonies began to form charter government. The government in the
colonies was based off of religion. In the New England colonies, they had more religious freedom.
Excluding the Quakers, most forms of Christianity were accepted.Puritans and Pilgrims migrated to
New England. There, the children were given a good education in order to be able to read the bible. In
the Southern colonies, most of them were Catholic. The people of the churches were the ones who had
control over the government. People in the north were trying to get away from English religions, yet
the south was embracing

The Atmospheric Temperature, Pressure And Density
The atmosphere has a mass of about 4.5 to 5.0×1018 kg. The atmospheric temperature, pressure and
density vary considerably with altitude. The atmosphere surrounding the Earth from dangerous cosmic
radiations from outer space and helps in sustaining life on the earth. The atmosphere plays a vital role
in maintaining the heat balance on the earth by absorbing the infrared radiation received from the sun
and re emitted by the earth. Infact, it is known as the greenhouse effect , which keeps the earth warm
enough to sustain life on the earth. The atmosphere has broadly three categories like major, minor and
traces compounds.
Major components N2 (78.09%), O2 (20.94%) and water vapour (0.1 to 5%).
Minor components Argon (0.93%), CO2 (0.32%).
Trace components Neon, Helium, Methane, Krypton, Nitrous Oxides, Xeon, SO2, NO2, NH3, CO, O3
and I2.
Atmosphere has four segments troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere and thermosphere.
1. Troposphere: The term tropo derived from the Greek word which means turning over. It extends up
to 11 km above from the earth surface and temperature is varies from 15°C to 56°C. The troposphere
accounts over 70% of atmosphere mass. Troposphere contains most of the water, cloud and particulate
matter of the atmosphere. This layer shows positive lapse rate. Temperature and water vapour content
in the troposphere decrease rapidly with altitude. Water vapour plays a major role in regulating air
temperature because it absorbs solar energy and thermal

9th Street Children Park Problem
Kids thrive off interaction with each other and playing . They need this interaction to grow socially,
physically, and mentally. When there playgrounds get torn down, mistreated, and rundown it presents
problems for these kids lives. The problem I am focusing on is the 9th Street Childrens Park. The
problem with it is that it s getting worn down and becoming a small hazard.
This problem has been becoming worse and worse over the past decade. Concerns have grown with it
as well. Parents are concerned about their children s safety, and I would have to both agree and
disagree. The main problem with the park is the main structure. The wood is untreated and the bolts
are well past starting to rust. Rust can turn metal sharp and increase the risk of injury and could cause
a serious emergency. The park is over 20 years old and in my lifetime I don t know of any attempts to
fix the problem until recently.
First and foremost the safety of our children must come first, and anything done must be done in the
best interest of them. But we should also be keeping a city treasure intact for them to enjoy and for
their kids to enjoy. My three part solution to the problem is to move ahead with temporary closing of
the park, but for the purpose of a renovation. The second part of the solution is to ... Show more

Simply tearing down the park is a waste of time, materials, and memories when we can just build a
better park and a stronger future of children. If this problem does not get solved and the current plan to
level the park does not go through, we could risk injuring children and causing bigger problems than a
playground. We as a community can do what we feel is right for our children. We owe it to our
children to keep this park intact and safe to play on. We need to think of more solutions to fix this
problem and go to city meetings to peacefully protest our opinion on this

Prosthetic Valve Endocarditis
We read with great interest the paper by Richard van Valen and his colleagues that evaluated patients
with prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE) due to opportunistic bacterial pathogen Propionibacterium
acnes (P. acnes). The authors should be congratulated for publishing the largest single centre series to
date on the topic, as thus far the literature was dominated by single case reports. We would like to add
some thoughts on the microbiological aspects of PVE caused by this facultative anaerobic species.
Diagnosis of PVE caused by this microorganism is often delayed due to oligosymptomatic and
nonspecific presentation, hence microbiological confirmation is pivotal for adjusting treatment.
Unfortunately, aside for establishing positivity of blood and/or tissue cultures, there is no further
elaboration on the microbiological techniques employed to diagnose P. acnes in this study, probably
due to its retrospective design. It would also be interesting to know the incidence of neurologic
symptoms in this case series of 13 patients, as these are more commonly observed in P. acnes PVE
than in any other type of infective endocarditis (x). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Story Of An Hour And A Respectable Woman
Women s role in society has greatly changed since the 19th century, which is the time period that The
Story of an Hour and A Respectable Woman are set in. In these stories, Kate Chopin describes the
emotions of a woman after discovering that her husband is dead, as well as the internal conflict within
a woman who is tempted to cheat on her husband. They are both centered around independence in a
setting that does not typically promote such things for women. Therefore, with such outlandish
concepts for that time period, it is greatly indicative of the author s beliefs. Thus, The Story of an Hour
and A Respectable Woman reflect Kate Chopin s beliefs about marriage, societal expectations, and
female independence through the characterization of her female leads. Chopin makes her position on
marriage clear in her portrayal of a woman who has found out that her husband is dead. Despite
initially mourning him in The Story of an Hour, Louise Mallard is completely overjoyed after the
morbid discovery. She is so elated that she even chants to herself: Free, free, free! (Chopin 164). Any
sort of ambiguity about the chanted word is negated when the narrator explicitly states that, There
would be no one to live for her during those coming years; she would live for herself (Chopin 165).
Both of these quotes are highly suggestive about Chopin s beliefs. They portray marriage as a burden,
or as a punishment inflicted on a person rather than a union between two people in

Analysis Of The Garden Of Earthly Delights
Art is all around us and whether we notice it or not we are always evaluating, deconstructing, and
deciding on if we like it or not. The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch is a triptych
done in the Renaissance period. A triptych is a painting or relief carving that has three different panels
and are hinged together side by side. I first came across this painting in my art history class in high
school and from then on I loved it due to all the imagery, colors, and the overall meaning that it had.
Ever since then this artwork has left a big imprint and got me to think about art as much more than a
picture, but to look at it as a whole and analyze it. This painting always seemed interesting and
intriguing for a couple of reasons. There are many themes going on, the colors are very monochrome
but yet look vivid and life like, and it has a very deep meaning with the themes of mortality, sin, and
shows the end results for evil doings. The triptych has three different panels and all three have their
own story to tell. When the triptych is closed and both left and right sections are shut you see the
world in tones of gray or neutral colors. At the uppermost left corner of the closed sections you can
see a depiction of God looking down at the world with an open book in his hands. The first one on the
left tells the story of how God introduced Adam to Eve. They are shown to be in a beautiful and
surreal looking location which is thought to be paradise. Adam, Eve, and God

Deviance In Psychology
Entry 7
Drugs were not acceptable for cool girls. Drugs however, were acceptable and even encouraged for
boys. I know one female who smoked pot, all the other cool females ostracized her, called her a
druggie . I know one guy who refused to try pot, and the cool guys called him a wuss (that means
wimp), and didn t ask him out to party anymore (pg 145).
The limit of what is socially acceptable for each gender to participate in seems to not exist for males,
however for females, reaching this point does not require much deviance. Deviance is defined as any
violation of norms. It is clear that the use of drugs is very gender specific, and if identify as other than
a male, informal sanctions are certain to occur from peers and parents. On ... Show more content on

This is the feeling of disorientation upon venturing into a very different and unknown culture. The
difference between locations is referred to as cultural variation. This term relates to behaviors such as
ethnocentric attitudes, xenocentrism, and cultural relativism among others. The sight of the seemingly
countless designer possessions most peers owned in the same state where she resides showed how
drastically different two cultures can be within a distance of a few miles. Her shock was the product of
being exposed to two opposing cultures in a state she previously believed was culturally very similar

have no memory of the cultural transition, upon inquiring my parents, the differences were vaguely
similar to the specific one s the girl in the passage noticed. Reasoning for as to why the girl felt more
poor within the suburbs as compared to the city can be explained by relative poverty. This means what
is considered to be the poverty line or poor in one area may differ from the poverty line within another
area. Essentially, the area one lives is is generally relative to resources accessible to them, which is
relative to their social class/stratification. While the family of the girl may have been a middle or

Stalin and His Creation of a Gulag
One of the most brutal mistakes made by Stalin was the creation of a GULAG. It is difficult to give a
precise characterization of its purpose. The aim of this work is to answer the question, Can we
generalize why certain people were able to survive the Gulag more than others? To survive the Gulag,
many prisoners had to fight with others for food, shelter, and simple medical care. Certain prisoners
went into religious and intellectual meditations to preserve at least the appearance of intelligence. The
survival required willpower, strength of mind, skills, mercilessness, and a lot of luck.
Every former Gulag prisoner explained his/her survival as a result of many insignificant strategies. A
variety of memoirists claimed that the only reason why they have survived was due to their spiritual
life. To distract themselves for the physical sufferings, many prisoners created mental exercises:
religious rituals, music, art, cards, chess, and literature. Prisoners used to write and read poetry to each
other, told stories, discussed philosophy and history. Under such harsh conditions, the prisoners were
required to have an extraordinary imagination. To play cards or paint, they had to use anything that
was easy to hide from the regular raids in the barracks. The tree core was used as a canvas and any
blood was used as paint.
The Soviet Union created a system that forced prisoners to constantly fight with each other. Being
imprisoned led up to despair. Many were driven to commit

Orphan Train Character Analysis
Throughout the novel Orphan Train, there is the reoccurring importance of names for characters.
Niamh receives a total of three different names in her lifetime, each name representing a different
persona. Niamh is naïve and acts her age, Dorothy experiences hardships and is forced to suppress her
emotions, Vivian is identified as the Neilson s child and has a more stable home life. On the other
hand, Molly has a significant name to her culture that helps her to relate to her culture with the events
she has gone through in her life.
To begin with, Niamh was Vivian s original name. Niamh was a child, who had a family that
immigrated to Ireland. Niamh experienced the death of what she thought was every family member,
she was mourning that loss for as long as she had that name. Niamh was put into the Children s Aid
Society that put her onto the orphan train and placed her with the Byrnes family. Niamh was still
innocent and had no idea the mistreatment she would face. Niamh says as she reaches Minnesota, how
strange, I think that I am in a place my parents have never been and will never see. How strange that I
am here and they are gone. I touch the Claddagh cross around my neck (Kline 62.) Her saying this
expresses how Niamh is longing for comfort and has yet to reach the realization that she has become
undesirable. She still acts as if she is unsuspecting and innocent.

The Action For Declaratory Relief
One such instance where a declaratory judgment does not generally serve a useful purpose or
terminate controversy is where there is another action pending in a different courts involving the same
issues. Indeed, generally courts will not entertain a declaratory judgment action if there is pending, at
the time of the commencement of the action for declaratory relief, another action or proceeding
involving the same parties and in which the identical issues that are involved in the declaratory action
may be adjudicated. Waicker v. Colbert, 347 Md. 108, 113 (1997). This rule rests on the principle that,

Denmead, 22 Md. 135, 145 (1864) (quoting Brooks, supra, 1 Md. Ch. 351). This rule survives in the
context of a declaratory judgment action out of recognition that the declaratory judgment is
distinguishable from other judgments because courts are empowered to adjudicate upon disputed legal
rights whether or not further relief is or could be claimed. Edwin M. Borchard, The Uniform
Declaratory Judgments Act, 18 Minn. L. Rev. 239 (1934). In order for declaratory judgments to retain
the procedural requisites of justiciability: two principal criteria guid[e] the policy of rendering
declaratory judgments . . . (1) when the judgement will serve a useful purpose in clarifying and
settling the legal relations in issue, and (2) when it will terminate and afford relief from the
uncertainty, insecurity, and controversy giving rise to the proceeding. It follows that when neither of
these results can be accomplished, the court should decline to render the declaration prayed.
Id. at 265. Pursuant to these principles, Maryland Courts have generally held that the practical
purposes of the declaratory judgment are ill served when a court makes a declaration while an action
involving similar issues are pending before another court.

In the early 1930s, the residents of the picturesque city of Dachau, Germany, were completely
unaware of the horrific events about to unfold that would overshadow their city still today. The

camps and of the Holocaust, the mass murder committed by the Nazi s in World War II. Dachau
Concentration Camp, which would soon be placed on the edge of their community, would serve as a

The bunker acted as a prison within a prison and served several functions. It was the central site of
cruelty; imprisonment in the bunker meant weeks without sufficient food and brutal beatings by the

people will unlikely pay for a luxury service such as this. People with low discretionary income will
go to a local grocery store and buy food on sale, instead of paying for extra delivery fees. Another cost

that I never heard of at all. Living here in Grand Rapids I didn t think I was going to come to school
here at all. But here I am here for the next four years trying to figure out what I want to do with my
life, trying to find my American dream. Through my research I interviewed 4 peers, 3 adults my
parents age, and 2 adults my grandparents generation. After each interview I asked them their
demographics of who they are in the work force to get a better background of their story. I listened to
the interview a few timed to gather as much information on what the interviewer ... Show more

The stats show that 23% of African Americans who were raised in a middle class family were able to

have come to understand the concepts with a feminist perspective. Part of Sociology deals with gender
inequality, race, age, and class and though my research, I explored options of inequality through
gender and how each factor interacts with each other. From a feminist perspective, one emphasizes
women, their experiences, and their role in society while promoting equality in gender. Cultural
aspects and generational stereotypes are also addressed. Not only does this perspective deal with
females, but also with male roles in society, how to explain social differences between genders, and
gender oppression. Other questions feminist look at are how do men and women s values differ and
how men and women perspectives change in

The Doctrine Of Freedom Of Contract
The particular focus of this essay is on how terms are implied. This is central because the courts
intervene and impose implied terms when they believe that in addition to the terms the parties have
expressly agreed on, other terms must be implied into the contract. Gillies argued that the courts have
become more interventionist in protecting the rights of contracting parties thereby encroaching upon
the notion of freedom of contract. The doctrine of freedom of contract is a prevailing philosophy
which upholds the idea that parties to a contract should be at liberty to agree on their own terms
without the interference of the courts or legislature. Implied terms can be viewed as a technique of
construction or interpretation of contracts. It has been argued that the courts are interfering too much
in their approach to determine and interpret the terms of a contract. The aim of this essay is to explore
this argument further and in doing so consider whether freedom of contract is lost due to courts
imposing implied terms. The essay will outline how the common law implies terms. The final part of
the essay will examine whether Parliament, by means of a statute, or terms implied by custom restrict
freedom in a contract. An overall conclusion on the issue will be reached. On the one hand it is evident
that terms implied at common law can be implied in law or implied in fact . Terms implied as a matter
of fact are said to give effect to unexpressed intentions of the

Muscle Contraction Experiment
The introduction of this lab report discussed and elaborated how muscle contraction is an intricate and
precise step by step process in the body. The concepts outlined at the introduction intertwine with the
experiments performed in this lab. The experiments aimed to showcase the physiological cause and
effect of skeletal muscle responses towards various situations. For instance, the first experiment
demonstrated spatial summation through the form of muscle recruitment. The cause of this reaction
was due to the increased voltage input on the sciatic nerve. Furthermore, the second case study
exhibited temporal summation, where constant stimulus exposure led to a fusion of twitches called a
tetanic contraction. As for the third experiment, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The previous trial involved multiple sources of motor units contracting together to generate a strong
tension. This time, fusion of contraction came from the frequency of stimulus input. In this case, the
stimulus magnitude remained the same throughout the trial, while the frequency of parts per second
increased in succession per 30 seconds. Going back to Figure 2, the graph revealed a sigmoidal trend,
or an s shaped graph. The correlation existed between an increase in twitch tension and frequency of
stimulus on the sciatic nerve. The physiology behind this paralleled relationship was due to the fusion
of small muscle twitches with no relaxation period. This resulted in a sustained, and maximal
contraction better known as a fused tetanus. It can be said that the frequency of action potential
determines the level of tension increase, until the maximum tension is obtained (Widmaier et al, 2015,

Cold War Dbq Research Paper
n the time period following World War 2, the beginning of the Cold War, Americans mainly feared
three things: the spreading of communism in the United States, the communist investigators
supposedly in America, and nuclear war between America and the Soviet Union.
Communism was covering Asia and Europe, striking fear in individuals as country after country fell
into communism. As American politicians strengthened the idea of containment, and cabinet members
such as John Foster Dulles spread the idea that if world communism...will increase the danger to the
entire free world, Americans were greatly fearing communism. Citizens began believing others when
they announced that communism was endangering the peace of America (Document B) and when they
addressed the problem they had created by making statements such as we fear the men in the Kremlin.
American citizens highly feared this horrific government of communism, and the Eisenhower
Administration did nothing to little to prevent these fears. Even though they acknowledged these fears,
they used this fear as support for spending on military defense. The Americans fear during this time

Howard Robard Hughes was a very inventive, attention getting man. He was an out spoken

Although Howard remained in the news his entire life he was not always looked on favorably in the

photographed by the public. Howard was born on Christmas Eve 1904, in Houston, Texas. He was the

Percy s Essay A River Pilot Looks At The Mississippi
Walker Percy s The Loss of a Creature details his idea of what he calls the preformed complex: biases
that people form as a result of experiences created by experts. Experiences such as a tour of the Grand
Canyon, reading a sonnet in a college poetry class, or the dissection of a dogfish in biology class are
all packaged and shaped by experts, according to Percy. Experts do this for sightseers so that they can
better understand experiences the way experts want them to. In Mark Twain s essay A River Pilot
Looks at the Mississippi he examines the perception of the Mississippi from the perspective of the
passengers of the steamboat and the pilots of them. Percy s experts and sightseers seem to be very
similar to Twain s pilots and passengers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Percy, sightseers aim to compare real life experiences with other s experiences that have
influenced their preformed complex. Percy claims that when a sightseer says Why it is every bit as
beautiful as a picture postcard! He feels he has not been cheated (Percy, 47). The sightseers aim to
receive some sort of confirmation that they were not cheated by the experience. The pilots on the river
have a preformed complex about what the significance of each element of the river should be which
causes them to lose sight of the beauty the elements hold. River pilots could feel cheated by the river
if it did not provide any indication of what the conditions were as then the river did not fulfill its duty
to the river pilots. The nature of this relationship is very transactional for both the pilots and the
sightseers: they look for it to be worth some sort of currency and in their case the currency is time.
The time they give to the experience should be well used for somethings that is up to their
expectations. These expectations differ between the pilot and sightseer as the pilot expects information
whereas the sightseer expects a comparison. This relationship is key to both parties understanding and
interpretation of the

I Learned About College University Of Nebraska Wesleyan...
This semester through my Archway seminar I learned many things. Not just about college but
specifically about the University of Nebraska Wesleyan and how the schooling here works. The
Archway seminar is designed to be an intro class into learning how to college and it was really an eye
opener for me. Through the assignments of our active reading journals I learned how to look deeper
into thing and really explore their entire meaning. Taking something simple that I read and writing
about experiences and what I thought about it really help this ability grow throughout the semester.
Through the discussion in this class I learned a lot more about each chapter. I looked forward to the
discussion because I enjoyed hearing everyone else s way of thinking. Something s mentioned in the
discussion I would have never thought about. Although I didn t participate in the discussion as much
as others I felt like it got better throughout the semester. I have never really been one to open up to big
crowds and share my opinion. Due to many reasons. But the discussion allowed me to tear down a
little bit of that wall. Both of these experiences are something I know I will experience throughout my
entire college career and learning them the first semester is something that will really help me along
the way. In the book On Looking the most significant part of this book to me was the just how it
opened my mind to the world. This book showed me specific things and details that I had never

Analysis Of This Side Of Paradise By F. Scott Fitzgerald

his first novel. It was originally called The Romantic Egotist and was rejected by the publisher twice
before he revised it a third time and changed the title to This Side of Paradise.
This Side of Paradise is one of Fitzgerald s most popular works and is considered to be the book that
launched his writing career. The novel is semi autobiographical, meaning it contains several
autobiographical aspects and reflects the events and people that occurred within his life, while using
fictional characters and elements.

Gender Bias For Dress Code

Student protests growing over gender equal dress codes I think that dress code at school is gender bias
because it s female specific, your socioeconomic status will help determine if you get dress coded or
not, boys don t usually get dress coded like girls do, and girls have a harder time dressing age
appropriate. Females are often targeted for dress code because the dress code lists more restrictions
and allocations for females instead of males. Dress code violations include baring shoulders, wearing
a tank top, or exposing a bra strap. Schools can be petty when getting on to girls for dress code issues.

social policies within the Youth and Women but particularly through his concept of

Many of the ways the Nazis enforced the Volksgemeinschaft was effective, because citizens were
reporting suspicious behavior and enemies of the state were being purged from civil service positions.
The implementation of Volksgemeinschaft was largely effective, but also had unintended

Hitler had initiated changes that insisted women should return to their traditional roles as homemakers
and provide healthy offspring to the Nazi state. Childbearing was encouraged in Germany, however
this was only acceptable to the Aryans not the Jews. Hitler implemented policies such as financial
incentive marriage loans and special medals were given to women who gave birth to large families.
He also made divorce difficult, abortion and contraception illegal in order to achieve his objective
effectively. Also, women‚ organizations were created to indoctrinate women with Nazi ideas such as,
The German Women‚ Enterprise. These programs promoted cookery classes, marriage, motherhood

The Controversy Of Water Conservation
Every time I want to use the bathroom, I turn the shower on. I kinda feel bad but I am paying for the
water so it is ok. I was astounded to hear my friend speaking these words. I was in disbelief of her
attitude towards the use of water. Even though her statement was true the water bill was in fact
covered by her tuition her reasoning and possible excuse of the unnecessary use of the shower was
worryingly mistaken. Granted, this statement came from a first semester college freshman that
experienced many changes after starting college. Her actions could be justified by some with the
argument that she acted that way in search of some privacy. Nevertheless, that, and other forms of
wasting water by college students, cannot be justified once the implications to our environment are
considered. Because we, as college students, are not aware of the heightened importance of water

Communist victory in the Civil War has however, created significant debate among historians,
namely: was a Communist victory inevitable and if so is it more sensible to see the Chinese Civil War
as a Communist victory or as a Nationalist defeat? When researching these questions it becomes
blatantly obvious that the Guomindang government led by Chiang Kai Shek was riddled with
problems and they are very much the cause of their own downfall. Widespread government

At the end of the Sino Japanese War the Guomindang held significant advantages over the
Communists, with its widely recognised legitimate government controlling China, giving it the power
to tax and conscript. On the other hand, the Communists could not match the Guomindang s troops in
terms of training and equipment and could be outgunned and outmanoeuvred in all major regions of
the country (Westad, 2003: 8). Furthermore, the Communist party was hardly represented in the cities
at all, which of course was the power base of the Guomindang. However, the Communists also had
successes resulting from the war with Japan including increasing their area of control and practiced
evolving their strategies of protracted guerrilla warfare against the Japanese which in turn generated
public support. Despite this the party s main forces were still located in North west China and they
were not in such a powerful position that a civil war with the Guomindang would be a mere formality
in securing control of the country.
The Civil War is therefore simply not a case of the imminent decline of the Guomindang and the
Communists irresistible rise. Rather the Sino Japanese War provided the framework for the decisions
and strategies that would ultimately lead to Nationalist defeat. The war with Japan left the
Guomindang decimated and they did need to undergo reform in order to survive; however the

Prison Reform Pros And Cons
Correctional reform will not happen until the profits are removed from the topic. The majority of
prisons, parole, and probation offices are run by privately owned companies. The prison has become
big business . There should be no profits in the corrections. Prisons have evolved into an extended
vacation without members of the opposite sex. But there have been cases of female guards having sex
with inmates. There should not be flat screens TVS or video games. They should be given the basic
tools of life and expected to produce their own living essentials. Prison is not supposed to be fun and
relaxing, it is supposed to be miserable to reinforce the idea that it s not a place you want to be.
Protective custody should not be offered to sex offenders and other members of society who would
become targeted in the general population. People argue that this violates their civil rights, but these
people were aware that their behavior could violate rights when they partook in the illegal activities.

The Kids for Cash Scandal in 2008 was hard evidence. 2 judges in Pennsylvania were indicted for

A Study Of Dark Matter
A Study Of Dark Matter Contribution to the Universe and Dark Matter Candidates
Aditi Sharma, Boris S. Kalita, Harshit Sharma, Rohit Kumar Singla
Abstract
Dark Matter has been one of the most researched topic in the recent era of science. Even though we
have observed e ects of this exotic entity, we are yet to understand its structural form. Thus we are
forced to hunt for clues that would help in a better understanding of this component which forms
26:8% of the entire universe. This report delves into the problems that led to the introduction of the
concept of Dark Matter. The at Rotation Curve Problem of velocity distribution of galaxies and the
Virial Problem have been discussed. The contribution of Dark Matter in the formation of Large Scale
Structures have also been looked into. We have also attempted to give an idea about the probable
number densities of three Dark Matter candidates assuming that they make up the Dark Matter halos
of a Supercluster at redshift, z 0:91 (Kim et al. 2016). We have then discussed the signi cance of
understanding the constituents of Dark Matter and its possible beni ts for humanity regarding the
generation of energy using annihilation.

Domestication Of Bananas And Plantain

PLB 143: Gepts
Domestication of Bananas and Plantain (Musa spp.)
Abstract
Bananas and plantains (Musa spp.) are one of the major staple foods in the world. In 2006 the
estimated world production of bananas was 80.6 million tons while 16.8 tons were traded (Cohen,
2011). Although bananas are common today, the origins of the banana are complex and occurred over
thousands of years during multiple stages. Archeologists focused on the Kuk Valley of New Guininea,
the area where the domestication of bananas supposedly took place around 8,000 BCE (Before
Common Era) (Bot, 2007). The study of banana history has been difficult because banana pollen and
seeds were rare or absent at archaeological sites. It wasn t until recent technologies and the use of
multi disciplinary research that we could gain a better understanding. Genetics and linguistic studies
also help in understanding the banana origin (Hirst, 2015). Diploid and triploid forms of bananas have
been identified and their distribution throughout the world is a key piece of evidence in unlocking the
truth about banana domestication.
Introduction
The banana (Musa spp.) is a large perennial herb with leaf sheaths that form their pseudostems,
meaning they are rather giant herbs than trees. Both the plantain and banana are sterile and
parthenocarpic so the fruit is seedless. The plant is made up of 8 12 leaves that are about 9ft tall and
2ft wide (Chia and Huggins, 1992). Bananas are considered the

New World History
Learning about Pocahontas in class made me very interested in the topic of Native Americans coming
over to The New World . I grew up learning that Native Americans were perfectly fine with people
coming over from England to conquer their land, as Disney casually depicts it. During my research for
the paper I watched The New World which was nothing like Disney s Pocahontas. Even though they
both were missing some key history elements. The New World was directed by Terrence Malick,
produced by Sarah Green, and the screenwriter was also Malick. The film makers were pretty accurate
with the big parts of the movie; I could imagine that these parts of the movie were changed to make
movie more exciting and entertaining. The film blends recorded ... Show more content on

So the props, costumes, sets, etc. were hand built for the film by these masters, utilizing native woods,
plants, leaves, metals, fabrics, etc. and working from historical writings and drawings, and with the
assistance of an advisory board consisting of more than a dozen archivists, librarians, professors and
others. The important recreation of Fort James was accomplished with wood chopped out of growth in
the actual Jamestown area, just as the English would have in 1607. All other elements clothing,
makeup, hair designs, guns, swords, bows arrows, etc. were constructed under Fisk s supervision from
materials which would have been available to the Indians and to the English colonists at that time
(IMBD, 2). In the film, Fort James was actually built on land off of Little Creek Dam Road in Toano,
Virginia. The city of Werowocomoco was built across the river in the Chickahominy Wildlife
Management Area, which is a very beautiful area. The agecroft hall in the movie is the real hall from
the fifteenth century. It was transported from Lanacashire to Windsor Farms on the James River in
1925. It is now also open to the public. The Susan Constant ship also appeared in The Scarlet Letter
and Disney s Squanto: An Indian Warriors Tale. All of the shots taken from England in the movie were

Relationship Between Odysseus And Telemachus
Great Expectations
A great number of classical literature portrays a relationship between a father and son that appears
quite distinct compared to relationships in today s society. Mothers are known to be more emotional
and soft, whereas fathers are more stoic and stern. Fathers hardly have physical interactions with their
son s, in fact, they do not express much emotions like a mother would. Homer s epic poems The Iliad
and The Odyssey have emerged from a patriarchal society, where fathers held the dominant role in a
family. However, these books show that father and son relationships are shown to have a special bond
that is formed through respect and honor. Both poems cover many fathers and son s relationships,

As a king, he had accomplished much during his reign, including guiding troy through the last ten
years of the Trojan War. Priam also showed his compassion and grace through his treatment towards
Helen, despite her being the reason for the Trojan War. Moreover, as a father, Priam makes great
efforts to teach Hector the heroic ways and foster in his son the very things that brought him honor
and glory. He shows great love and affection towards his oldest living son Hector, and he expresses it
from a father s point of view rather than that of a king. Hector being the greatest warrior and the
commander of the Trojan army, has great pride in his father s accomplishments. He seeks to emulate
Priam by his actions on the battlefield and the way he conducts himself as a warrior. As a son, he has a
great desire to show himself capable of being the man his father expects him to be. Together the pair
shows a very strong and admirable father and son relationship. As presented in book 22, Priam shows
love and concern for his son, pleading with Hector to forgo his heroic duty and not fight Achilles.
Having lost many sons, Priam discards his role as a king and speaks only as a father afraid of losing
his oldest son. Hector, my dear child, abide not, I pray thee, yon man, alone with none to aid thee, lest
forthwith thou meet thy doom (Hom. Il. 22.38 39). As Hector stands outside the city walls, Priam begs

Negative Effect Smartphones
Nowadays, more and more people have their own smartphones and the time they spend using their
phones is rising. The number of smartphone users are forecast to grow from 2.1 billion in 2016 to
around 2.5 billion in 2019, with smartphone penetration rates increasing as well (Statista, 2017). As a
result, the increase number of smartphone usage were addicted to smartphone. Moreover, smartphone
usually effect people s lives especially mobile phones have a powerful influence of people s social
skills. Based on a study shows that 47% people feel comfortable while they communicate with others
online but they feel nervous when they talk to people face to face. (source) Thus, in this essay, I will
discuss how smartphones can have a negative effect on people s social skills. Smartphones make
people lose their patience easily because people received so much information everyday. Many
children receiver their smartphones when they just 6 years ago, they are subjected to a variety of
information everyday whether good or not. In addition, they can read more than one information at the
same time which mean they maybe cannot concentrate on one thing. And with the progress of science
and technology, the speed of people accept information is rapidly increasing. This phenomenon could
lead to a serious problem which is people would lose their patience. Based on professor Frank Partnoy

  • 2. Subjugation Of Women In The Good Earth By Pearl S. Buck It is not an unknown topic that men are seen to be higher ranking or superior than women in society, in history and even today. Women can be considered weak or less intelligent than men; they have a lower pay rate and are not taken seriously in the work place. In some countries, women are not allowed to drive or own their own property or house. They are forced to cover themselves from head to toe by their husband or father. The issue of subjugation of women all over the world, from the past and the present, is one important theme delivered in The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck. The principal character in the novel, Wang Lung, starts out as a poor farmer living in Ancient China who gained his wealth from his land. His wife O lan is one of the many female characters who are treated poorly and are held in lower status than men by not only Wang Lung, but other men and all of society. To start with, O lan, Wang Lung s wife, was a very selfless, quiet, hardworking woman who was a house slave in the House of Hwang, a very rich powerful family. Wang Lung then married her and she lived on his farm. It is overlooked by Wang Lung throughout the novel how much she has done for him and their family. Before Wang Lung met O lan, he wanted a wife that will act like a servant and will deprive him of any responsibilities, and that is exactly what he got. She cleaned the house, took care of Wang Lung s father and the children, and worked in the fields as well. She is, however, the only positive ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

So slave that got released or free could go to any of those 5 states and live a normal life. Some people would take the slaves papers and rip them up and send them back to the slave states to make money. So that made it hard for the slaves to live a new normal life. The troubles they had with this treaty was how divide the land into states. Because the population had to reach 60,000 to become a statehood. But once that happened they divided the land north of the ohio river into 5 states. One way humans perceive depth is by having eyes that are spaced a little bit apart, this is contrary to certain animals that tend to be prey, and have evolved so that their eyes are on either side of their head to enable them to spot predators. Predator animals, on the other hand, usually have eyes positioned closely together, like humans, to enable them to spot, chase, and swoop down upon prey. When there playgrounds get torn down, mistreated, and rundown it presents problems for these kids lives. The problem I am focusing on is the 9th Street Childrens Park. The problem with it is that it s getting worn down and becoming a small hazard. This problem has been becoming worse and worse over the past decade. Concerns have grown with it as well. Parents are concerned about their children s safety, and I would have to both agree and disagree. The main problem with the park is the main structure. The wood is untreated and the bolts are well past starting to rust. Rust can turn metal sharp and increase the risk of injury and could cause a serious emergency. The park is over 20 years old and in my lifetime I don t know of any attempts to fix the problem until recently. First and foremost the safety of our children must come first, and anything done must be done in the best interest of them. But we should also be keeping a city treasure intact for them to enjoy and for their kids to enjoy. My three part solution to the problem is to move ahead with temporary closing of the park, but for the purpose of a renovation. The second part of the solution is to ... If this problem does not get solved and the current plan to level the park does not go through, we could risk injuring children and causing bigger problems than a playground. We as a community can do what we feel is right for our children. We owe it to our children to keep this park intact and safe to play on. • 9. Prosthetic Valve Endocarditis We read with great interest the paper by Richard van Valen and his colleagues that evaluated patients with prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE) due to opportunistic bacterial pathogen Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes). The authors should be congratulated for publishing the largest single centre series to date on the topic, as thus far the literature was dominated by single case reports. We would like to add some thoughts on the microbiological aspects of PVE caused by this facultative anaerobic species. Diagnosis of PVE caused by this microorganism is often delayed due to oligosymptomatic and nonspecific presentation, hence microbiological confirmation is pivotal for adjusting treatment. Unfortunately, aside for establishing positivity of blood and/or tissue cultures, there is no further elaboration on the microbiological techniques employed to diagnose P. acnes in this study, probably due to its retrospective design. It would also be interesting to know the incidence of neurologic symptoms in this case series of 13 patients, as these are more commonly observed in P. acnes PVE than in any other type of infective endocarditis (x). ... • 10. The Story Of An Hour And A Respectable Woman Women s role in society has greatly changed since the 19th century, which is the time period that The Story of an Hour and A Respectable Woman are set in. In these stories, Kate Chopin describes the emotions of a woman after discovering that her husband is dead, as well as the internal conflict within a woman who is tempted to cheat on her husband. They are both centered around independence in a setting that does not typically promote such things for women. Therefore, with such outlandish concepts for that time period, it is greatly indicative of the author s beliefs. Thus, The Story of an Hour and A Respectable Woman reflect Kate Chopin s beliefs about marriage, societal expectations, and female independence through the characterization of her female leads. Chopin makes her position on marriage clear in her portrayal of a woman who has found out that her husband is dead. Despite initially mourning him in The Story of an Hour, Louise Mallard is completely overjoyed after the morbid discovery. She is so elated that she even chants to herself: Free, free, free! (Chopin 164). Any sort of ambiguity about the chanted word is negated when the narrator explicitly states that, There would be no one to live for her during those coming years; she would live for herself (Chopin 165). Both of these quotes are highly suggestive about Chopin s beliefs. They portray marriage as a burden, or as a punishment inflicted on a person rather than a union between two people in ... • 11. Analysis Of The Garden Of Earthly Delights Art is all around us and whether we notice it or not we are always evaluating, deconstructing, and deciding on if we like it or not. The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch is a triptych done in the Renaissance period. A triptych is a painting or relief carving that has three different panels and are hinged together side by side. I first came across this painting in my art history class in high school and from then on I loved it due to all the imagery, colors, and the overall meaning that it had. Ever since then this artwork has left a big imprint and got me to think about art as much more than a picture, but to look at it as a whole and analyze it. This painting always seemed interesting and intriguing for a couple of reasons. There are many themes going on, the colors are very monochrome but yet look vivid and life like, and it has a very deep meaning with the themes of mortality, sin, and shows the end results for evil doings. The triptych has three different panels and all three have their own story to tell. When the triptych is closed and both left and right sections are shut you see the world in tones of gray or neutral colors. At the uppermost left corner of the closed sections you can see a depiction of God looking down at the world with an open book in his hands. The first one on the left tells the story of how God introduced Adam to Eve. They are shown to be in a beautiful and surreal looking location which is thought to be paradise. Adam, Eve, and God ... • 13. Stalin and His Creation of a Gulag One of the most brutal mistakes made by Stalin was the creation of a GULAG. It is difficult to give a precise characterization of its purpose. The aim of this work is to answer the question, Can we generalize why certain people were able to survive the Gulag more than others? To survive the Gulag, many prisoners had to fight with others for food, shelter, and simple medical care. Certain prisoners went into religious and intellectual meditations to preserve at least the appearance of intelligence. The survival required willpower, strength of mind, skills, mercilessness, and a lot of luck. Every former Gulag prisoner explained his/her survival as a result of many insignificant strategies. A variety of memoirists claimed that the only reason why they have survived was due to their spiritual life. To distract themselves for the physical sufferings, many prisoners created mental exercises: religious rituals, music, art, cards, chess, and literature. Prisoners used to write and read poetry to each other, told stories, discussed philosophy and history. Under such harsh conditions, the prisoners were required to have an extraordinary imagination. To play cards or paint, they had to use anything that was easy to hide from the regular raids in the barracks. The tree core was used as a canvas and any blood was used as paint. Edwin M. Borchard, The Uniform Declaratory Judgments Act, 18 Minn. L. Rev. 239 (1934). In order for declaratory judgments to retain the procedural requisites of justiciability: two principal criteria guid[e] the policy of rendering declaratory judgments . . . • 21. The Doctrine Of Freedom Of Contract The particular focus of this essay is on how terms are implied. This is central because the courts intervene and impose implied terms when they believe that in addition to the terms the parties have expressly agreed on, other terms must be implied into the contract. Gillies argued that the courts have become more interventionist in protecting the rights of contracting parties thereby encroaching upon the notion of freedom of contract. The doctrine of freedom of contract is a prevailing philosophy which upholds the idea that parties to a contract should be at liberty to agree on their own terms without the interference of the courts or legislature. Implied terms can be viewed as a technique of construction or interpretation of contracts. It has been argued that the courts are interfering too much in their approach to determine and interpret the terms of a contract. The aim of this essay is to explore this argument further and in doing so consider whether freedom of contract is lost due to courts imposing implied terms. The essay will outline how the common law implies terms. The final part of the essay will examine whether Parliament, by means of a statute, or terms implied by custom restrict freedom in a contract. For instance, the first experiment demonstrated spatial summation through the form of muscle recruitment. The cause of this reaction was due to the increased voltage input on the sciatic nerve. Going back to Figure 2, the graph revealed a sigmoidal trend, or an s shaped graph. The correlation existed between an increase in twitch tension and frequency of stimulus on the sciatic nerve. The physiology behind this paralleled relationship was due to the fusion of small muscle twitches with no relaxation period. According to Percy, sightseers aim to compare real life experiences with other s experiences that have influenced their preformed complex. Percy claims that when a sightseer says Why it is every bit as beautiful as a picture postcard! He feels he has not been cheated (Percy, 47). The sightseers aim to receive some sort of confirmation that they were not cheated by the experience. The pilots on the river have a preformed complex about what the significance of each element of the river should be which causes them to lose sight of the beauty the elements hold. River pilots could feel cheated by the river if it did not provide any indication of what the conditions were as then the river did not fulfill its duty to the river pilots. The nature of this relationship is very transactional for both the pilots and the sightseers: they look for it to be worth some sort of currency and in their case the currency is time. The time they give to the experience should be well used for somethings that is up to their expectations. These expectations differ between the pilot and sightseer as the pilot expects information whereas the sightseer expects a comparison. Not just about college but specifically about the University of Nebraska Wesleyan and how the schooling here works. The Archway seminar is designed to be an intro class into learning how to college and it was really an eye opener for me. Through the assignments of our active reading journals I learned how to look deeper into thing and really explore their entire meaning. Taking something simple that I read and writing about experiences and what I thought about it really help this ability grow throughout the semester. Through the discussion in this class I learned a lot more about each chapter. I looked forward to the discussion because I enjoyed hearing everyone else s way of thinking. Something s mentioned in the discussion I would have never thought about. Although I didn t participate in the discussion as much as others I felt like it got better throughout the semester. I have never really been one to open up to big crowds and share my opinion. Due to many reasons. But the discussion allowed me to tear down a little bit of that wall. Both of these experiences are something I know I will experience throughout my entire college career and learning them the first semester is something that will really help me along the way. In the book On Looking the most significant part of this book to me was the just how it opened my mind to the world. This book showed me specific things and details that I had never ... Gender Bias For Dress Code Nineteen percent of the 7,800 students surveyed in middle and high schools across the country said they were prevented from wearing clothing deemed inappropriate based on their gender... CNN Student protests growing over gender equal dress codes I think that dress code at school is gender bias because it s female specific, your socioeconomic status will help determine if you get dress coded or not, boys don t usually get dress coded like girls do, and girls have a harder time dressing age appropriate. Females are often targeted for dress code because the dress code lists more restrictions and allocations for females instead of males. Dress code violations include baring shoulders, wearing a tank top, or exposing a bra strap. Schools can be petty when getting on to girls for dress code issues. Domestication Of Bananas And Plantain Katie Twyman May 28th, 2015 PLB 143: Gepts Domestication of Bananas and Plantain (Musa spp.) Abstract Bananas and plantains (Musa spp.) are one of the major staple foods in the world. In 2006 the estimated world production of bananas was 80.6 million tons while 16.8 tons were traded (Cohen, 2011). Although bananas are common today, the origins of the banana are complex and occurred over thousands of years during multiple stages. Archeologists focused on the Kuk Valley of New Guininea, the area where the domestication of bananas supposedly took place around 8,000 BCE (Before Common Era) (Bot, 2007). The study of banana history has been difficult because banana pollen and seeds were rare or absent at archaeological sites. It wasn t until recent technologies and the use of multi disciplinary research that we could gain a better understanding. Genetics and linguistic studies also help in understanding the banana origin (Hirst, 2015). Diploid and triploid forms of bananas have been identified and their distribution throughout the world is a key piece of evidence in unlocking the truth about banana domestication.
