HOW IS MUSIC MARKETED?
YOUTUBE
• Youtube is one form of marketing music and the worlds second biggest networking
site where every minute more than 100 hours of video are uploaded with an
estimated 49 hours being music based. Additionally Youtube has over a billion
users which all contributed to breaking the Youtube server when the music video
Gangnam style was uploaded and received the most amount of views in an hour of
uploading.
• This is a new form of marketing music with Youtube only becoming available for
music publishing in 2003 , more than half the music industry artists use Youtube to
share and market their music singles and albums by uploading their music videos
singles via Vevo the Youtube music publisher where videos get an average of
100,000 views.
• Youtube is a modern way to market music and
has shown to be a successful way to do so
with artists single sales increasing by nearly 32 %
when the music video is released onto Youtube.
MAGAZINES
• Magazines are a successful but expensive way to market music.
Magazines such as NME and Top Of The Pops have pages
dedicated to music adverts where artists can pay to advertise for
their new singles , albums or upcoming tours.
• An issue with marketing your music in magazines is that there is a
limited audience, as only a small amount of people continue to
purchase magazines and read them , so therefore a limited
audience view the advert and therefore this type of marketing isn't
the most successful in comparison to the other forms such as
Youtube.
• Marketing music in magazines is starting to become less common
due to being over taken by the new social media sites such as
twitter which now many artists turn to when marketing their music,
MUSIC TELEVISION
• Music television is still a popular way to market music with channels
such as 4music , MTV and Capital TV running 24 hours and being
watched my an estimated 1.2 million people an hour.
• Music can be marketed by music television as artists new singles /
music videos can be played and premiered on these channels which
can result in people going to buy the single that is being played.
• Music television is a form of marketing music that will remain successful
in my opinion because shows like Top Of The Pops are still always
watched by millions when aired so therefore when music is marketed a
large audience is then intrigued by the music being played leading to
them going to purchase it or research the artists. For example in the
2010 Christmas Top Of The Pops , Justin Biebers’ Christmas single was
aired and within an hour of the airing of the single it had been pushed up
five places on the UK chart revealing that music television is a
successful form of marketing.
SOCIAL MEDIA
• Music can also be marketed through social media due to many
artists having profiles on the various social media sites and being
able to tweet links to their single releases and retail stores where
their album is being sold. One direction frequently tweeted a link to
the Sainsbury's website where fans were able to pre order their
album in 2012.
• Social media sites such as twitter also enable artists to release 60
second previews of songs before their release which then creates
a market for the music as people start talking about it. Drake used
a 50 second preview clip for his song “child play” which got over
500,000 people tweeting about the clip online sending pre order
single sales up by 70 % .
• I think social media is the most successful way to market music
because it is used daily by billions of people world wide, also
artists on twitter have an average of 3 million followers so when
they tweet about their music 3 million people automatically find out
about it and a majority of people go and check it out or order the
single/album.
TO CONCLUDE
• I have now looked at some of the ways music can
be marketed and by doing so it has given me an
insight into how I am going to market my own video.
I think I shall use social media and Youtube to
market my own music as it seems to be the most
popular and successful way that people in 2016
view or purchase artists music.
