2. Universal Music Group
• Universal Music Group (UMG) is an American music institution that is the
largest in the world. It is however, owned by the French media conglomerate
Vivendi.
• UMG owns Universal Music Publishing Group which is the second largest
music publishing company in the world.
• UMG co-produced Vevo which is a free online viewing platform working with
YouTube to show music videos online
3. Universal Music Group
Universal Music Group works with many different famous artists and supports
them from the beginning of production, there are hundreds of artists including:
• The 1975 – Indie rock
• Amy Winehouse – Soul/rhythm/blues/jazz
• All Time Low – Pop punk
• Ellie Goulding – Indie pop
• James Blunt – Pop rock
• Selena Gomez – Dance pop
• Take That – Pop
As you can see from this small and randomly selected number of artists, UMG
work with a variety of genres of music.
4. Universal Music Group
• This music institution would be a good choice to use for my chosen artist and
music video creation. This is because it is a very successful company with lots of
experience with the ability to provide a lot of guidance. As well as this they have a
large budget, enabling many creative options for the production and release as
well as being able to release the song worldwide.
• The logo is recognisable as it is well known for producing films as well as
music
• It is black and white which makes it bold and stand out
• The name is anchored by the image of the globe which suggests that it is a
successful company worldwide
5. Republic Records
• American record company that is owned by Universal Music Group
• It is one of UMG’s 3 premier groups along with Interscope Records and Island
Records
• Works with the genres of hip hop, pop and rock
• It is more focussed than UMG as the company as a whole cannot be a successful
all-rounder and must work more closely with specific genres of music by having
sub-companies
• The logo is black with thick and bold
text which makes it stand out
• The main focus is on the word
“republic” which is more recognisable
and important than the fact it is a
record label
6. Republic Records
The companies best selling artists are as follows:
• Amy Winehouse
• Drake
• Lil Wayne
• Nicki Minaj
• Taylor Swift
• Owl City
• 3 Doors Down
It works with a narrow division of genres, focussing primarily on a only a few genres so
it therefore will only be an influential institution and a possible working partner if my
group and I were to create a music video that fits under one of these genres. However,
we are creating a soul music video so this institution will not be beneficial for our
production
7. Sony Music Entertainment
• An American music corporation - managed by Sony Corporation of America and a
subsidiary of Japanese conglomerate Sony Corporation.
• The red logo stands out a lot and is very eye-
catching
• “Sony music” is written in a small font because it
is a recognised label name which has a big and
successful history do it doesn’t need to be
written largely to stand out and be the main
focus
8. Song Music Entertainment
• Michael Jackson – pop
• Calvin Harris – electropop
• Avril Lavigne – pop punk
• Whitney Houston – gospel/R&B/pop
• Ke$ha – electropop
• John Legend – R&B
The artists that Sony Music Entertainment works with are mostly from a pop genre or
a tangent from pop. This means that they will be most successful and knowledgeable
in pop so wont be able to help my music video creation which is in the genre of soul.
However they are very successful company with a large budget to fulfil dreams so
they would be a good company to use but I would not chose this institution because
they are not as experienced in my chosen song genre.
9. Warner Music Group
• Warner Music Group is an American company that is a major world wide
record company
• It is the third largest record company worldwide – operating in 50 countries
worldwide
• Warner Music Group owns Warner/Chappell Music which is the worlds largest
music publishing company
• The logo design is simple yet effective and
memorable
• The white lines are a modern and simplistic
way of writing ‘W’ for “Warner”
• The typography is simple as the name is well-
known and speaks for itself – it doesn’t need
to stand out and catch the audiences
attention or “try” as hard
10. Warner Music Group
• Ed Sheeran - pop
• Coldplay - alternative
• Red Hot Chili Peppers – funk rock/alternative rock
• Kylie Minogue – pop/dance
• Paramore – alternative rock
• My Chemical Romance – alternative rock
Warner Music Group works mainly with alternative and rock artists more
than popular music genres. This means that I will not be using this institution
when releasing my music video because they are not as experienced in
soul/pop music as I would like. However, Warner Music Group have a lot of
money due to their reputation and being so successful. Due to my group and
I are creating a music video to a soul song I would prefer to use an institution
with experience and a large budget.
11. EMI Music Group
• A British record company that was founded in 1972 with the parent
company of Universal Music Group
• EMI Music Group is a multinational music recording and publishing
company
• The logo is red which makes it eye-
catching and stands out
• The typography is big which makes it easily
seen, this is because it isn’t as well known
as the bigger companies suuch as Waner
Music Group and Universal Music Group
12. EMI Music Group
• John Lennon – rock/pop
• Duran Duran – synthpop
• Queen – rock
• The Beatles – rock
• Pink Floyd – rock
• Tina Turner – pop rock
EMI Music Group tend to work with rock artists so they have a lot of
experience with this genre. They are not known worldwide as well as other
institutions so the release of the music video would not be as successful for the
artist.
I would not use this institution for the release of my music video as I do not
think it would be successful as their experience is not within the particular
genre that my group and I are concerned with.
13. Syco Music
• This is a British music production company that was founded by Simon Cowell
in 2002 for the release of X-Factor Britain’s Got Talent competitors’ music
• It is successful in both Britain and the USA however certain artists have proved
it has the ability to be successful in the wider world as well – such as One
Direction who became successful worldwide following X-Factor
• The logo has to stand out because it is
not a well known, big production
company
• Yellow is an alternative colour for the
logo which makes it eye-catching
• If I were to create a music company logo
I would ensure that it is bright and eye-
catching in order to gain popularity and
recognition
14. Syco Music
• One Direction
• Little Mix
• Leona Lewis
• Susan Boyle
• Olly Murs
• Fleur East
Both the X-Factor and Britain’s Got Talent appeal to the wider family audience (the
majority) whereby the most common music genre is pop. Therefore this music
company releases and works with pop music artists
