How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts
1. How effective is the combination of your main product and
ancillary texts?
I believe for a media product to be successful, for example, a documentary, it
needs to have supporting media products to back it up e.g. Magazine articles,
radio trailers etc. Therefore we created both a magazine double page spread
and radio trailer to support the documentary. The main reason for doing this
essentially is because they help promote and sell the documentary and
encourage people of our target audience to view the documentary.
Our target audience is teenagers and young adults, who we are trying to make
aware of the fitness and health crisis. It can be aimed at both males and
females, as we made all three media products suitable. Also, the media
products will be aimed at people from working class backgrounds to upper
class backgrounds, as we have suggested cheap/expensive ways to keep fit in
order to keep all people from different backgrounds interested. Looking at
different demographics there is no particular race or religion that we are
aiming the media products at, just those who fall into the age range, which is
mainly 13-25. Location was another aspect in which we researched, the
documentary is filmed just outside of Birmingham in a town called Solihull,
which is highly populated and therefore surrounded by the fast food giants.
I believe that the two supporting media products support the documentary
effectively as they use clips from it. This then encourages the reader and/or
listener to watch the documentary; again, this is the reason for using the two
supporting media products.
Radio Trailer
Throughout the radio trailer we have used clips which feel important and
necessary in the radio trailer. These clips include two vox pops from the
documentary and also a short clip from an interview with a personal trainer
and fitness expert. All of these aspects allow the viewer to recognise the
documentary, showing that the two products work well alongside each other.
Our radio trailer for Radio one, which again adds to the realism and
professionalism of the radio trailer, as the documentary shall be shown on
BBC3. Both Radio 1 and BBC3 are suitable channels to show the radio trailer
and documentary as they are channels which people of our target audience
will listen to.
