Homes are considered as one of the most critical area for
the impact of energy consumption due to high energy
demanded by home appliances (Inji & Hamdy, 2013).
Automation is the use of control systems and information
technology to control equipment, industrial machinery and
processes, reducing the need for human intervention and
plays an increasingly important role in the global economy
and in daily experience (Olafusi, 2009).

Energy consumption, energy losses and cost of Tariff
becomes unnecessarily high both at Homes and offices
when appliances that are not needed at a particular time are
being put to operation; therefore there is a need for a
system that can perform automatic switching OFF/ON of
home appliances.
Theft of properties has become rampant nowadays while
available solutions are too cost for an average Nigerian to
afford, therefore there is a need for an affordable and
effective home automation with security system.

This study is important at homes to ensure reduction
in high utility bill as a result of energy consumed by
appliances
It also provide an affordable and effective home
security system
By automatic switching ON/OFF of appliances, the life
span of an appliance can be prolonged.

ARDUINO MICROCONTROLLER is a simple developmental
microcontroller board with Digital, Analog and communication
pins that allows user to make an electronic device that is more
sensitive, accurate and precise. It is the main component of this
project as it does all its operation with respect to the code
written on it with C and C++ language using Arduino IDE 1.6.4
as the compiler
RELAY MODULE:- is uses 5V from the microcontroller to
automatically switch ON/OFF an AC appliance.

LASER LIGHT: this is a light emitting diode with higher
concentrated light intensity, it is use to beam light to the Light
sensor .
LIGHT SENSOR:- the light sensor receive a constant
percentage of light intensity from the laser light such that
change in the light intensity causes a trigging pulse to sent to
the microcontroller for the relay module to be active
LIGHT DEPENDENT RESISTOR:- This also reports percentage
light intensity of the environment to the microcontroller. When
the environment is dark to a certain percentage, it help to put
ON automatically all security light. Also it activates the motion
senor for security.

MOTION SENSOR:- the motion sensor is activated when the
LDR reports very small or negligible amount of light intensity
to the microcontroller
TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY SENSOR:- it is use to report
the weather condition of the environment to the
microcontroller to determine time OFF, time ON and speed of
the fan e.t.c
BUZZER:- the buzzer is use to make an alarm in the case of
Emergency.
LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY:- This is use to display the activities
carried out by the microcontroller
