Introductory facts about the Holocaust
• The Holocaust refers to the period from January 30,
  1933, when Hitler became chancellor of Germany, to
  May 8, 1945 when the war in Europe ended.
• The Jews who died were not casualties of the War .
  They were the victims of Germany's genocide plan.
• This was a plan Hitler called “the Final Solution’’.
FACT:

6 million Jewish people died.
3 million Russians died.
2 million Polish Christians died.
1.5 million Gypsies died.
250,000 mentally/physically
disabled people died.
Plus thousands and thousands of
Jehovah's Witness’, homosexuals
and enemies of the Nazi party died.
FACT:

Throughout the Holocaust 1.1 million
children were killed.
 That is the same as the number of
people as there are living in
Birmingham.
FACT:

90% of the Jewish population in Poland
were killed in the holocaust.
2/3 of all Jews in Europe were killed. Most
were killed in concentration (death)
camps.
FACT:

The slogan in Auschwitz was “Work will
make you free”.
Ironically between 1-2.5 million people
were killed there.

The average weight of a woman in
Auschwitz was 22-29 kilograms.
That is the equivalent of a medium sized
dog.
FACT:

1 day in the Auschwitz camp they killed
24,000 people. That is the same number of
people in a football stadium.
FACT:

People would sleep in bunk beds. Normally
people would have to sleep 3 or more people
to 1 bunk.
FACT:

The punishment room would hold three
people for four days. The room was only
90cm x 90cm. That is the same size as a
babies cot.
