The Holocaust was the systematic murder of approximately 6 million Jews by the Nazi regime and its allies and collaborators. It began in 1933 when Hitler rose to power in Germany and lasted until 1945. Jews were killed through mass shootings, gassing in camps like Auschwitz, and starvation and disease in ghettos and camps. The Holocaust led to the deaths of approximately two-thirds of the Jewish population in Europe.

2. TIMELINE 1933- The Nazi party takes power in Germany. Adolf Hitler becomes prime minister of Germany. Trade Unions are closed and books with ideas considered dangerous to Nazi beliefs are burned in public. 1934- Hitler combines the positions of chancellor and president to become "Fuhrer" or leader of Germany. 1935- Basic rights and citizenship are taken away from the Jewish people. Many Gypsies, Jehovah’s Witnesses and homosexuals were sent to concentration camps. 1936- Nazis boycott Jewish-owned businesses. Olympic Games are held in Germany, signs that deal with the Jews are removed until the event is over. 1938- German troops annexed Austria. Nazis terrorize Jews throughout Germany and Austria- 30,000 Jews are arrested, 91 are killed. 1939- Germany takes over Czechosolvakia and invades Poland. World War II begins as Britain and France declare war on Germany. Hitler orders the systematic murder of the mentally and physically disabled in Germany and Austria. Jews are required to wear armbands or yellow stars. 1940 - Nazis begin deporting German Jews to Poland. Jews are forced into ghettos. Nazis begin the first mass murder of Jews in Poland. 1941 - Germany attacks the Soviet Union. In two days, mobile killing units shoot 33,771 Ukrainian Jews at BabiYar. The death camp at Chelmno in Poland begins murdering Jews.

3. TIMELINE 1942- Jan 20, 1942 - Wannsee Conference to coordinate the "Final Solution." Jan 31, 1942 - SS Einsatzgruppe A reports a tally of 229,052 Jews killed. In March - In occupied Poland, Belzec extermination camp becomes operational. The camp is fitted with permanent gas chambers using carbon monoxide piped in from engines placed outside the chamber, but will later substitute Zyklon-B. March 17, 1942 - The deportation of Jews from Lublin to Belzec. March 24, 1942 - The start of deportation of Slovak Jews to Auschwitz. In 1943 - The number of Jews killed by SS Einsatzgruppen passes one million. Nazis then use special units of slave laborers to dig up and burn the bodies to remove all traces. Jan 18, 1943 - First resistance by Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto. Jan 29, 1943 - Nazis order all Gypsies arrested and sent to extermination camps. Jan 30, 1943 - Ernst Kaltenbrunner succeeds Heydrich as head of RSHA. In Feb - The Romanian government proposes to the Allies the transfer of 70,000 Jews to Palestine, but receives no response from Britain or the U.S. In Feb - Greek Jews are ordered into ghettos. Feb 2, 1943 - Germans surrender at Stalingrad in the first big defeat of Hitler's armies. Feb 27, 1943 - Jews working in Berlin armaments industry are sent to Auschwitz.

TIMELINE April 15, 1945 - Approximately 40,000 prisoners freed at Bergen-Belsen by the British, who report "both inside and outside the huts was a carpet of dead bodies, human excreta, rags and filth." April 23, 1945 - Berlin reached by Soviet troops. April 29, 1945 - U.S. 7th Army liberates Dachau. April 30, 1945 - Hitler commits suicide in his Berlin bunker. April 30, 1945 - Americans free 33,000 inmates from concentration camps. May 2, 1945 - Theresienstadt taken over by the Red Cross. 1961- April 11 - August 14 - Eichmann on trial in Jerusalem for crimes against the Jewish people, crimes against humanity and war crimes. Found guilty and hanged at Ramleh on May 31, 1962. A fellow Nazi reported Eichmann once said "he would leap laughing into the grave because the feeling that he had five million people on his conscience would be for him a source of extraordinary satisfaction."

7. Adolf Hitler Adolf Hitler was born on 20th April, 1889, in the small Austrian town of Braunau near the German border. Both Hitler's parents had come from poor peasant families. Adolf Hitler was the leader of the killing of 6 million Jews. The Jews were killed in various ways. They were either worked to death, killed in gas camps, or killed by other cruelties. Then their remains were used for various items such as soap, lamp shades, ect. They would take the gold teeth out of people after they were gassed. There was a vault found with 384 pounds of gold teeth. Adolf Hitler died on April 30, 1945, in Berlin, Germany.

8. Anne Frank Anne Frank was born in Frankfurt am Maine, Germany on June 12, 1929. Her older sister, Margot was three years older than her. In 1933 Anne, Margot, her father (Otto Frank) and her mother (Edith Frank) moved to Amsterdam. Anne Frank and her family were Jewish. Anne died in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp of typhus and so did her sister Margot. Her mother died of starvation and her father was the only one (out of that family) who survived. Anne is remembered in many ways, her father found her diary and has written many books about. This is how Anne is remembered today.

9. Chiune Sugihara Chiune Sugihara was a Japanese Consul-General in Kaunas, Lithuania, he issued thousands of visas to Jews fleeing Poland in defiance of orders from his foreign ministry. The last diplomat to leave Kaunas, Sugihara continued stamping visas from the open window of his departing train.
