HIV attacks and destroys cells of the immune system, specifically CD4 cells, over time weakening the immune system and leaving the body vulnerable to infection. HIV can hide in cells for long periods before destroying the CD4 cells. The virus is transmitted through certain bodily fluids and enters the body through breaks in skin or mucous membranes. While there is no cure for HIV/AIDS, treatment with combinations of antiretroviral drugs can suppress the virus and prevent transmission. Prevention methods focus on avoiding contact with infectious fluids and using protection like condoms during sex.
