This project aims at providing
you:
1. Origin of HIV
2. An overview of what is
HIV.
3. How it is spread in the
body.
4. What are the
mechanisms and how it
works.
5. Means of infection.
6. Drugs available.
7. Actual treatment
available.
8. Detection of the virus.
9. Signs and symptoms.
METHOD OF SPREADING
ENTRY-attach to cell then binds to it and starts
fusion
REVERSE TRANSCRICTION- uses HIV enzyme
called ‘reverse transcriptase’
INTEGRATION-uses enzyme called ‘ integrase’
TRANSCRIPTION-uses enzyme named ‘protease’
MATURATION- assembles then budding and
finally maturation occurs
VIRAL LOAD refers to the amount of HIV
in your blood. It can range from
undetectable , low then high. (copies/ml)
MODES OF TRANSMISSION:
Having sexual intercourse or getting in
contact with any body fluid(unprotected)
From mother to child by birth or
breastfeeding
People sharing needles for drug use or
not changing blades at the barber shop
Through organ transplant or blood
donation
HIV drugs:
entry inhibitor- Fuzeon
Intrgrase inhibitor- isentress
Protease inhibitors- aptivirus or agenerase
NRTIs-emtriva or zerit
NNRTIs- edurant or sustiva
There are three types of test to detect HIV
namely:
1.ELISA method-has up to four generations
2.Rapid test ( commercial HIV kit)
3.HIV Western Blots
4.Line Immunoassay (LIA)
5.Immuno Fluorescent Assay (IFA)
MOST TEST REQUIRE BLOOD SAMPLE BUT
OTHER BODY FLUIDS CAN BE ALSO USED
In short, HIV is certainly a deadly
virus, but with time and research. It
can be cured. It does not kill directly
but it the disease that follows that can
prove to be deadly.
AIDS is the advanced stage of HIV
and it is also a lent (slow) virus.
INTRODUCTION
Fundamentals of HIV
PATHOGENESIS is how disease is caused
HIV can infect almost all type of blood cell but
are in love with the immune cells
Infected CD4 cell may die, produce more HIV
or become inactive
AIDS is the advanced stage of HIV
The immune system weakens over time
HIV is a spherical enveloped virus of about
90-120 nm in diameter
