Francois Vieta discovered the first direct formula for calculating pi in the 16th century. Archimedes of Syracuse made one of the earliest accurate estimations of pi around the 3rd century BC. The Sulva Sutra, an ancient Indian text, described methods for constructing a square with the same area as a circle using approximations of pi.
