The history of Malayalam journalism dates back over 150 years, originating with Christian missionaries publishing books and periodicals. The first Malayalam book was printed in 1772 in Rome. The first printing press in India was established in 1821 in Kottayam. Benjamin Bailey printed the first book in 1824 using new Malayalam types he designed. In 1845, the first lithographic press was set up in Thalasseri. The Basel Mission Society started the first newspaper in 1847 called 'News of the Kingdom'. Several other early newspapers included 'Dawn of the West', 'Treasury of Knowledge', and magazines published by missionary organizations, making Malayalam journalism over 150 years old.
