BIRTH OF LANGUAGE JOURNALISM
 During 1813 to 1818, India witnessed significant growth
in the field of newspaper development
 Missionaries played key role in newspaper development
 The seramporo missionaries established three Journals
1. Dig Darshan ( Monthly in Bengal)
2. The Friend of India (Monthly in English)
3. The Samachar Darpan (Weekly in Bengali)
BIRTH OF LANGUAGE JOURNALISM
 The first Bengali language monthly Dig Darshan started
in 1818
 The only objective is ‘to feel the official pulse’.
 It published historical data, political news but cleverly
avoided political controversies
 The Friend of India was founded on 30th April, 1818
 J.C. Marshaman was the editor
BIRTH OF LANGUAGE JOURNALISM
 Under the leadership of J.C. Marshman, ‘The Samachar
Darpan’ was started in 1819
 The only objective is to support the administrators for
development of India
 It has the idea of the promoters to bridge the gap b/w the
Britishers and peoples
 It became a bilingual i.e. English and Bengali
BIRTH OF LANGUAGE JOURNALISM
 Samachar Darpan enjoyed the support of civilians and
administrators
 Later, It launched criticism of Vedanta Philosophy
 The Magazine invited replies from public
 Social reformer, Raja Ram Mohan Roy sent the replies
 Letters were refused to publication
 Roy was keen about the attacks made on Hindu
Philosophy
BRAHMANICAL MAGAZINE
 He wants to answer the criticism
 Later, He started ‘Brahmanical Magazine’.
 The only motto of ‘vindication of Hindu religion’
 He also started newspaper ‘Sambad Kaumudi’ in 1821
 James Silk Buckingham was the editor
 Roy gave ample publicity in its columns
 For this contribution, he considered as the ‘Father of
language Journalism’ in India.
RAJA RAM MOHAN ROY…
 He was greatest Social reformer in India
 He born at Radhanagar in Hoogly on 22nd May, 1772
 Roy fight against the social evil like Sati
 The first Gujarati press was established in Bombay in 1812 by
Sardoon Jee Marzban
 In 1823, MM Mitter started Persian -cum- Hindustani
Newspaper- ‘Shams-Ul-Akhbar’ from Calcutta
 During 1835-1857, Indian language Journalism has been
witnessed tremendous growth.
INDIAN PRESS & FREEDOM MOVEMENT…
 Balagangadhar Tilak was the forefront of freedom
movement in 1920.
 Later on Gandhiji led the movement
 He used the Press as weapon against the British rule
 He ran the newspaper ‘Indian opinion’ in South Africa
 From 1920 onwards Indian press played prominent role in
freedom movement
INDIAN PRESS & FREEDOM MOVEMENT…
 On 5th April, 1930, Gandhiji started Dandi March
 British govt. brought Indian Press order to curb the press
freedom in 1930
 By July, 1930, Over 131 newspapers were called upon to
pay securities
 on 11th Feb, 1933, Gandhiji started ‘Harijan’ an English Weekly

INDIAN PRESS & FREEDOM MOVEMENT…
 Gandhiji defined objectives of Journalism
1. To understand the popular feelings and give expression
2. Arouse the certain desirable sentiments
3. Fearlessly to expose the popular defects
 The Nationalist press supported the Gandhiji
 World War-II broken in 1939
 Gandhiji demanded complete Independence
LANGUAGE JOURNALISM IN INDIA…
 Newspapers are published in India in more than 100 languages
 Print media registered 5.13% growth in India in 2016
 94,715 were registered as periodicals in India
 In which, 16,136 were the newspapers
 Dainik Bhaskar (Hindi), claimed the top spot
 Followed by English daily The Times of India
 Anandabazar Patrika claimed the top spot in Kolkata with
1.15 million copies per day,
 Hindustan Times with 992,239 copies in Delhi.

Rise in literacy rate
Expansion of the middle class
Education of women
Untapped market
Technological advancement
Political awareness
Better purchasing power

BIRTH OF LANGUAGE JOURNALISM  During 1813 to 1818, India witnessed significant growth in the field of newspaper development  Missionaries played key role in newspaper development  The seramporo missionaries established three Journals 1. Dig Darshan ( Monthly in Bengal) 2. The Friend of India (Monthly in English) 3. The Samachar Darpan (Weekly in Bengali)

BIRTH OF LANGUAGE JOURNALISM  The first Bengali language monthly Dig Darshan started in 1818  The only objective is ‘to feel the official pulse’.  It published historical data, political news but cleverly avoided political controversies  The Friend of India was founded on 30th April, 1818  J.C. Marshaman was the editor
  • 4. BIRTH OF LANGUAGE JOURNALISM  Under the leadership of J.C. Marshman, ‘The Samachar Darpan’ was started in 1819  The only objective is to support the administrators for development of India  It has the idea of the promoters to bridge the gap b/w the Britishers and peoples  It became a bilingual i.e. English and Bengali

BIRTH OF LANGUAGE JOURNALISM  Samachar Darpan enjoyed the support of civilians and administrators  Later, It launched criticism of Vedanta Philosophy  The Magazine invited replies from public  Social reformer, Raja Ram Mohan Roy sent the replies  Letters were refused to publication  Roy was keen about the attacks made on Hindu Philosophy

BRAHMANICAL MAGAZINE  He wants to answer the criticism  Later, He started ‘Brahmanical Magazine’.  The only motto of ‘vindication of Hindu religion’  He also started newspaper ‘Sambad Kaumudi’ in 1821  James Silk Buckingham was the editor  Roy gave ample publicity in its columns  For this contribution, he considered as the ‘Father of language Journalism’ in India.

RAJA RAM MOHAN ROY…  He was greatest Social reformer in India  He born at Radhanagar in Hoogly on 22nd May, 1772  Roy fight against the social evil like Sati  The first Gujarati press was established in Bombay in 1812 by Sardoon Jee Marzban  In 1823, MM Mitter started Persian -cum- Hindustani Newspaper- ‘Shams-Ul-Akhbar’ from Calcutta  During 1835-1857, Indian language Journalism has been witnessed tremendous growth.

INDIAN PRESS & FREEDOM MOVEMENT…  Balagangadhar Tilak was the forefront of freedom movement in 1920.  Later on Gandhiji led the movement  He used the Press as weapon against the British rule  He ran the newspaper ‘Indian opinion’ in South Africa  From 1920 onwards Indian press played prominent role in freedom movement

INDIAN PRESS & FREEDOM MOVEMENT…  On 5th April, 1930, Gandhiji started Dandi March  British govt. brought Indian Press order to curb the press freedom in 1930  By July, 1930, Over 131 newspapers were called upon to pay securities  on 11th Feb, 1933, Gandhiji started ‘Harijan’ an English Weekly 
  • 10. INDIAN PRESS & FREEDOM MOVEMENT…  Gandhiji defined objectives of Journalism 1. To understand the popular feelings and give expression 2. Arouse the certain desirable sentiments 3. Fearlessly to expose the popular defects  The Nationalist press supported the Gandhiji  World War-II broken in 1939  Gandhiji demanded complete Independence

LANGUAGE JOURNALISM IN INDIA…  Newspapers are published in India in more than 100 languages  Print media registered 5.13% growth in India in 2016  94,715 were registered as periodicals in India  In which, 16,136 were the newspapers  Dainik Bhaskar (Hindi), claimed the top spot  Followed by English daily The Times of India  Anandabazar Patrika claimed the top spot in Kolkata with 1.15 million copies per day,  Hindustan Times with 992,239 copies in Delhi.
