2. Health Insurance Portability &
Accountability Act of 1996
• HIPAA was enacted on August 21, 1996.
• Provides Federal protections for personal
health information held by covered entities
and gives patients an array of rights with
respect to the information.
3. Who Is Protected
• Health Plans: Individual and group plans that
provide or pay the cost of medical care are
covered entities.
• Health Care Providers: Every health care
provider.
• Health Care Clearinghouses: Entities that
process nonstandard information from
another entity.
4. What Is Protected
• Name
• Date of Birth
• Social Security Number
• Address
• Any Health related information
5. Confidential
• If you see a file marked Confidential you
should not look into the file
• If you are tempted to peak at a patient’s
information without cause, then you are
violating the HIPAA regulations
• If you are unsure of what you should do seek
out your Supervisor.
6. How to ensure you are protecting
others.
• Always lock your computer when walking
away from your desk.
• Keep printed documents turned upside down
while working at your desk, and put away
when leaving your area.
• Never give another person your password.
• When you are finished with printed
documents, secure them in a shred bin or
shred them yourself.
