This document summarizes research on using reminiscence therapy to treat depression in older adults, especially those with dementia living in residential care. It finds that integrative reminiscence therapy, which helps clients reconstruct past events and emphasize positive aspects, is more effective at reducing depressive symptoms than instrumental reminiscence. Depression is common in older adults and dementia patients but often overlooked; reminiscence therapy can provide social interaction and cognitive benefits to improve mood and quality of life for these populations.
