Coal Seam Gas
Coal seam gas (CSG) is mostly composed of methane and is typically attached to
coal underground. This gas is released when pressure on the coal seam is reduced
by removing water from the seams (Queensland Government, 2014 ). In order to
obtain the gas, wells are drilled into the coal seams, bringing water from the coal
seams to the surface. This process reduces pressure and allows the gas to be
released (Queensland Government, 2014 ). CSG is an important energy resource
in Queensland and production of this gas takes up an ever increasing proportion of
Queensland gas use. Almost every farmer in Queensland depends at times on
underground water. The effect of CSG extraction using underground fracturing on
underground water is not clear. Basic sets of impacts that are broadly well
understood are that aquifer levels will sink dramatically and will depressurise. It
also risks groundwater contamination and the salt that is present in the water of
coal seams will be brought to the surface as well, in a quantity of about 1.8 million
tonnes of salt per year (ABC, 2010). There are several types of water contamination
that are possible. One is through the injection of chemicals through the fracking
processes, which will go underground and can travel to nearby water systems that are
in use (Gasfield Free Northern Rivers, 2014). Another is through chemicals that
naturally exist in coal seams being taken out of the coal seams and exposed to other

Part 3 Data and Methodology
3.1 Data Description The purpose of this study is to investigate the presence of
January effect in emerging stock markets of four Southeast Asia countries: Malaysia,
Thailand, Philippine and Indonesia, for the period of January 2012 until December
2015, which is the most recent period after the financial crisis in 2007 2008. The
financial crisis would affect the behaviour of the stock markets and thus the stock
price might not reflect its true value. As the most recent economic crisis is believed
to have ended in Fall 2011 (Elliott 2011; Weisenthal 2013), this study will focus on
the most recent 4 year period, from January 2012 until December 2015. The four
Southeast Asia countries are selected because there are limited studies about them.
Furthermore, they are the only Southeast Asia countries being included in MSCI
Emerging Markets Index as of 2016. Thus it is worth examining the efficiency of the
stock markets of these high growth emerging markets.
Daily equity market indices for four Southeast Asia countries will be collected
from Yahoo Finance and DataStream. The daily price index is collected instead of
monthly price index because this study attempts to examine if the January effect is
stronger on the first five days of January. The indices are FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI
Index (KLCI) for Malaysia, SET Index for Thailand, Philippine Stock Exchange
Composite Index (PSEi) for Philippine and IDX Composite Index for Indonesia.

When first reading it, the narrator comes across as a collective town voice, as he
/she speaks for the whole town and tells us the gossip and ideas of the town people.
He does so in a very detached way, as he is not commenting on the information he
is giving us. However, it is obvious that the narrator is a member of this town, as he
is using personal pronouns like we and our . Furthermore, one might get the
impression that the narrator is all knowing because he seems to know many details
that he could only know if he either experienced the events himself or is
omniscient. For example, on page 121 in the first paragraph, the narrator describes
a visit of the Board of Aldermen at Miss Emily s. When referring to these men, the
narrator uses the pronoun they , rather than we , as he usually does. This means
that he is not one of those men who visit Emily. But his precise knowledge about
many details of this meeting leads to the assumption that he must be either all
knowing or if he is not one of the men of the Board of Aldermen he is another
