27. SETTING WIND IN INDIA’S SAIL
India’s power sector is one of the most diversified and it is currently undergoing significant changes.
Occupying the fourth position in wind power installed capacity globally, India has envisaged a
target of 60 GW of power generation through wind by 2022. Wind Energy is the most mature
Renewable Energy sector illustrated by strong capacity additions. Total Installed capacity in India is
25189 MW by Jan 16 (1745MW)*. Key policy initiatives to enhance sector attractiveness:
• ‘Wind Energy Mission’ addresses issues on
• strengthening grid infrastructure for wind power
• identification of high wind power potential zones (wind parks)
• promoting inter-state power sale
• Green Energy Corridor (to be executed by Power Grid) is expected to create seamless
renewable power evacuation
• Offshore wind policy can kick start investments in offshore space
• Competitive bidding in wind announced
• GoI has announced a scheme of setting up 1000 MW of Central Transmission Utility
(CTU) connected wind power projects through the bidding route
• The framework allows non-windy states to fulfill their non-solar RPO obligations
• Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) would serve as the nodal agency, responsible
for organizing, implementation and monitoring the performance of the directives
27
28. INDIA: A HOT SPOT FOR SOLAR
MARKET
• International Solar Alliance (ISA), which will mobilise USD 1 trillion for deployment of affordable
solar energy by 2030 across tropical countries, is likely to be a reality by mid 2016.
• The government approved a 'viability gap funding' (VGF) of Rs 5,050 crore for setting up over
5,000 MW of grid linked solar power projects under the JNNSM.
• GOI to come out with a new policy for setting up solar zones in the country to give a fillip to RE
projects and manufacturing of equipment.

29. ROOFTOP SOLAR IN INDIA TO
TAKE A MAJOR LEAP
• The World Bank, Asian Development Bank and the New Development Bank formed by the
BRICS nations are providing loans to boost India's rooftop solar programme.
• Loan amount of $500 million (Rs 3,345 crore) from each of them is expected to fund mostly the
industrial and commercial projects
• Consumer Guidance Society of India (CGSI) installed the first 'reverse net' meter of
Maharashtra at its Azad Maidan office premises.

30. STORAGE IS THE NEW SOLAR
Ministry of New & Renewable Energy is currently working on developing policy framework and is
expected to launch a “National Energy Storage Mission” later this year 2016. Focus of these
initiatives is not only on accelerating adoption of the energy storage and micro grid technologies,
but also to attract investments in India & to develop a global manufacturing hub for advanced
storage and micro grid solutions.
