ABSTRACT:
What this paper is trying to highlight is how City-Regions are being actively constructed (Harrison, 2012), where they are being mobilised in support of, or in opposition to, particular territorial development models and strategies.
Hence, this paper contributes to debates about the meaning and the understanding of the dynamics of actively constructed term of the “City-Region”, by proposing an Analytical Systemic Framework after reviewing the literature of the main key authors. The Analytical Systemic Framework called “The Future of the City-Regions”
(FCR) consists of 5-Systems: URBS (Urban System), CYBER (Relational System), CIVITAS (Socio-Cultural System),
POLIS (Socio-Political System) and DEMOS (Democratic System).
The Admin Data Census Team are now producing administrative based population estimates down to small area level. This SlideShare highlights some challenges with our small area estimates when we compare these with the official population estimates at Census Output Area (OA) level. We have demonstrated a number of challenges in estimating the population for small areas using case studies, along with possible ways we could address these. We are seeking feedback from our users on these findings. Contact Admin.Data.Census.Project@ons.gsi.gov.uk
Towards a system of cultural indicators for Porto Alegre public policiesAlvaro Santi
In 2005 Porto Alegre City Hall introduced a New Management Model, emphasizing transversal actions and outcome monitoring. In this model, the Management Portal1 is the tool that allows the standardized data recording and sharing on the Internet. It gathers more than 500 actions in 13 strategic programs, which are grouped into four strategic axes of priority. The Municipal Culture Office (SMC) is in charge of 24 actions, monitored through 47 quantitative indicators, created by the action managers („leaders‟), also in charge of collecting and updating data. Based on literature available, this study analyzes these indicators so as to provide elements for a discussion with the leaders on their effectiveness to evaluate results in terms of public policy. It is the initial phase of a process whose final purpose is to strengthen an internal „culture‟ of evaluation and to create a system of cultural indicators

All Things Data - Core Tools for Economic Development PractitionersTom Dworetsky, AICP
The recent profusion of data tools has made it easier to make informed economic development decisions than ever before. Yet at the same time, this inundation of information resources can make it difficult to keep track of all the tools at our disposal. What’s an economic developer to do? At the 2016 Northeast Economic Development Association (NEDA) Conference in New Haven, our panel of data junkies led a discussion about what you need to know in order to navigate the complex market of data resources. Through highlighting a variety of free and/or cost-effective data tools that can facilitate economic development decision-making and leading an interactive discussion aimed at developing solutions for your specific data challenges, session attendees came away with an enhanced understanding of how to find and use better data to carry out the mission of their organizations.

ONS Local has been established by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) to support evidence-based decision-making at the local level. We aim to host insightful events that connect our users with exciting developments happening in subnational statistics and analysis at the ONS and across other organisations.
Are you interested in finding, visualising, comparing and downloading a wide range of geographically granular datasets in one place? If so, this webinar is definitely for you!
We will present ONS plans for the development of Explore Subnational Statistics (ESS), a public-facing digital service that will allow users to find out more about local areas across the UK.
We will retrace the main milestones in our journey to date, starting from the launch of ESS vision in the GSS subnational data strategy, then taking a closer look at the Subnational Indicators Explorer, and, finally, outlining a roadmap towards the Beta version of the service.
This event is open to all, however we anticipate it will be of most interest to anyone working at a local level, with data on the policy themes of economy, transport connectivity, education, skills, health and wellbeing, or interested in data visualisation products.

The outlook for continued library funding is changing at a rapid pace. With the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, public libraries are not only losing future funding but also being forced to get creative with their existing budget in order to support new patron needs. This new mode of operation encourages a dynamic response in service as the environment changes from week to week. Public libraries are turning to grants to supplement funding and enhance programming for an increasingly virtual world. Leveraging existing resources and relationships is a good way to build a foundation for grant seeking.

Librarians wear a lot of hats. Far from a quiet profession with an easily defined range of tasks, a librarian might be called upon to unclog a toilet, clean up a spill, and provide technical support all in the same day (or hour!) How can a librarian stay on top of all of the needed tasks and maintain sanity? This program will consist of a short review of current research on librarian time management and a panel discussion of current librarians discussing ways they manage time, with time for questions and answers.

In Spring 2020, an assessment project was developed to assess the impact of library instruction to five Speech 102 classes. The assessment was administered in two parts using the immediate and follow-up surveys provided in the project OUTCOME platform. The immediate survey was administered via a print survey directly after the in-person instruction sessions. Due to the pandemic, the follow-up survey was administered six weeks after the instruction sessions via an online survey. This session will discuss using project OUTCOME, the findings of the assessment, and what librarians can learn from assessment projects during a semester of upheaval.

During FY 2020, University of West Georgia’s Library was presented with actual and theoretical budget cut scenarios. As a result, we were asked to reduce our collections budget by approximately $400,000 for FY 2021 and to devise various strategies for potential budget reductions in the future.
Our collection management committee accomplished this through a multifaceted approach: analyzing relevant data points, seeking insight from subject area liaisons and departmental faculty, and evaluating relevance to current degree programs and course rotations.
Our framework provides an example of how to undertake a collection management project during times of fiscal uncertainty.

A brief discussion on ways librarians can use design thinking strategies to support older adult library users. With more university libraries serving the public, academic librarians must be prepared to serve non-traditional students and multigenerational patrons. In particular, older adult library patrons often surface with unique research quests ranging from leisurely bylines, life-long learning to ancestral pursuits and more. Assessing their distinct needs yields opportunities to serve this population of users through relationship building, knowledge-based content, and access privileges.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

• Largest household survey in the U.S. (annual size of approx. 3
million)
• Conducted by mail, telephone, and personal visits -- random
sample

24. This zip code is small, and with a huge
mall, not as many housing units
You may want to look at
additional zip codes,
or Census Tracts,
or even a nearby city
Dunwoody (city
24
26. Why is Census Geography
Important?
• Census Bureau quote: [the Bureau] “doesn’t have a
mandate to do ZIP Code mapping so we don’t claim
that any ZIP product we have is definitive or complete”
• ZIP Codes are designed to be linear postal delivery
routes
26
27. ZIP Code; Census Tract
• Example:
The Buckhead branch of the Atlanta-Fulton Public
Library system recently moved – ONE block over. This
is in a different ZIP code area; but the SAME Census
Tract.
In this case, the Census Tract statistics are
representative of the area around the library.
27
28. ZCTA® (ZIP Code Tabulation Areas)
• Developed by the Census Bureau…“generalized area
representations of the ZIP Code service areas”
• In most instances the ZCTA code is the same as the ZIP
Code ® for an area.
• The Census Bureau took the most frequently occurring ZIP
Code in an area for the ZCTA code. Some addresses will
end up with a ZCTA code different from their ZIP Code.
• Not stable over time
• Frequently cross county and place boundaries
• More info. at: https://www.census.gov/geo/reference/zctas.html
28
29. Census Tracts
• Optimum size: 4,000 people in each tract ; 74,000 in U.S. and
Puerto Rico
– “small, relatively permanent statistical subdivisions of a
county”, with similar demographic characteristics
– determined by local committees
– normally follow visible features (natural boundaries)
– data collected every 5 years with the American Community
Survey
29
30. Finding Census Tracts
• American Factfinder – Advanced Search tab – then select, from
left frame, Geographies --
30
31. Finding Census Tracts – cont’d.
• Then, select the “Map” tab and start typing an address:
Select the address, then click on the magnifier icon to search.
[note: this address is the Governor’s mansion]
391 west paces ferry
31
34. Confidentiality and the Census
• In order to protect privacy, the Census Bureau uses
“data swapping”
• Sample of households is selected and matched on a set
of key variables with households in other areas that
have similar characteristics (such as the same # adults ;
same # children)
• Often occurs within a neighboring area
34
35. Radius data – effective tool
• No need to be concerned with political boundaries
(county lines, state lines)
• Can create your own custom area
• Often used in business plans
• Flexible choices – 1, 3, 10 miles, etc.
• What do you need to get started?
– latitude and longitude of a specific point
35
36. Finding lat./long. for addresses
• Missouri Census Data Center – Circular Area Profiles
36
39. AppLinks
(also from Missouri Census Data Center)
• Easy and quick – to find profiles of demographics of –
• Census Tracts
• ZCTAs

articles -- https://www.bea.gov/scb/
• Interactive data – new feature
https://www.bea.gov/
43
44. BEA – Who uses this information?
GDP, national data –
• White House and Congress to prepare budget estimates and projections.
• Federal Reserve to set monetary policy.
• Wall Street to provide primary indicators of national economic activity.

56. Advantages of commercial databases
• Augment the Census Bureau info. from the Economic Census with
online company directory databases (many public library systems and
university libraries subscribe).
• Search more than one industry code at a time, and some can point
you to indirect competitors (i.e., if your user wanted to open a “snack
bar”, a supermarket sells snacks too…)
• Do a radius search for direct and indirect competitors
• And, a radius is ideal if there are boundaries (county line, Census Tract)
• Demographics databases such as SimplyAnalytics allow much
quicker/easier acess to this data…value-added
56
57. PATENTS & TRADEMARKS
• U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) – https://www.uspto.gov/
• USPTO has designated Patent & Trademark Resource Centers
(PTRCs) throughout the U.S. –
they offer free reference assistance to anyone, often conduct
classes and host workshops, and provide access to USPTO
databases and sources
• Special website focused for Inventors and Entrepreneurs, at:
https://www.uspto.gov/learning-and-resources/inventors-
entrepreneurs-resources
• Georgia Tech Library is the only PTRC in Georgia
(note: libraries at Auburn and Clemson are also PTRCs) 57
58. USPTO – core resources
• “General Information Concerning Patents” – 36 pages; updated 2014
