As the world's population keeps growing, we will need 45% more energy, 50% more food and
30% more water by 2030.
This trend – combined with concerns for energy security, climate change and urbanization – is
driving the demand for bioenergy.
Today biomass represents around 14% of global energy consumption. The share is expected to
be over 20% by 2030.

4. Finland – Bioenergy hotspot
• Finland is #1 user of bioenergy in the EU with bioenergy sources contributing over
20% of the final energy consumed.
• Finland is the greenest country in the world by environmental performance index
2016 - index created by Yale and Columbia universities along with the World
Economic Forum.
• Finland was awarded 2nd place in the Global Cleantech Innovation Index in 2014
and the EU Eco-innovation index in 2013.
• Finland has become a global leader in the utilization of wood-based biomass for
energy production thanks to its exceptionally strong forest cluster and extensive
investments in bioenergy R&D&I since the 1980s.
• Finnish companies are experts in providing holistic bio-energy solutions including
the whole value chain, even with demanding feedstock and mixed bio-fuels.
