Brain Training with the HEG or
EEG
Brain-training is a very unique
treatment approach. It can be an
effective approach for treating children
and adults. The training consists of
monitoring brain functioning by using
an HEG or an EEG device. The
treatment aims to gain control on brain
activities - behaviors, habits, activation
and patterns.
The approach of brain-training is the
system of learning awareness and
individual control over bodily processes
that are otherwise nonvoluntary
processes by using a clinical
instrument.
Who is this training for?
The benefits of brain-training with the HEG
or the EEG vary. It is not always used to
treat disorders. The individuals that are
most likely to gain from the training are
individuals who desire more control.
Training
Brain-training with the HEG or EEG
could be considered a progressive but
subtle approach to learning control in
brain-behaviors.
The HEG is a measure of local blood flow
in the brain (Swingle, 2017). The EEG
measure electrical current in the brain.
Where both instruments measure some
form of brain activation.
The devices assist us to identify where
the brain is activated, and how much
activation is taking place. We then can
move onto working on controlling these
areas and how much activation takes
place. Brain training relies on the
dedication, concentration, and self-
control of the trainee.
Neurofeedback may generate long-term
brain changes (Dias, Van Deusen, Oda &
Bonfim, 2012).
Methods of Action
There are two methods to behavior
that we use while in the brain-training
session:
1. Cognitive process / information
processing.
2. The use of sensitive feeling (Serra-
Sala, Timoneda-Gallart & Perez-Alvarez,
2016).
Important steps in brain-training are
seeing, learning and awareness. Brain
changes start with movements, and
when we become aware of movements
and learn how to make certain
movements, we can establish positive
long-term changes in our brain
functioning.
Functioning that can be the focus of
brain-training include depression,
anxiety, hyper/hypoactivity,
impulsiveness, concentration, emotion,
behavior, reaction/response, attention,
sleep, irritability, or processing.

Disorders
Brain-training is a process that may
assist with disorders and symptoms
such as eating dysregulation,
cognitive decline, attention-
deficit/hyperactivity disorder,
affective conditions (e.g. mania,
depression), ASD, OCD, sleep-wake
cycle disorders, PTSD and trauma.
Brain-training can also be used for
cognitive enhancement, memory,
impulse control, cognitive reserve,
brain resilience, increased cognitive
capacity, and cognitive improvements
(Brain-trainer.com, 2020; Swingle, 2017).
Brain-training using the HEG is
known to be a “slower moving
signal.” Using the HEG is an easier
form of feedback to gain and see
instant control (Dias, Van Deusen, Oda &
Bonfim, 2012).
The client is directed to voluntarily
change their psychological or
physical approaches and habits to
produce a more refined control over
brain activation and/or brain waves.
This process can be “the go-to” for
many needs and desires of the
modern-day child or adult.
Approaches in brain training:
1. Education – Learn about the
feedback you will create/see. Set
goals for your trainings, learn what
you can work on when “connected”
to the HEG.
2. Practice – Begin training. Wear the
device, acknowledge your current
functioning, envision your goals. See
the feedback, began to work towards
betterment.
3. Counsel – talk about results,
findings and new goals.
Brain Training – Shaping Habit
and The Feedback Loop
Brain-training is sometimes referred to
as neurofeedback. It is a clinical,
evidence-based approach that depends
on one’s application of control to adjust
their performance and functioning. It
uses counseling and clinical programs
to assist us to achieve better
functioning in many areas.
The results of brain-training are both
instant and long-term, this assists us to
learn about our behaviors quickly, and
too, it assists us to make the brain
changes and changes in our habits that
we need to reach a higher level of
health.

beginning sessions.”
Treatment Schedule: Brain-
training 1-3 times per week.
1. 15-45 minute training sessions.
2. 15-30 minute training
consultation.
Schedule can last 2-months-1 year
depending on treatment goals.

  • 1. Stotler, 2020 © Brain Training with the HEG or EEG Brain-training is a very unique treatment approach. It can be an effective approach for treating children and adults. The training consists of monitoring brain functioning by using an HEG or an EEG device. The treatment aims to gain control on brain activities - behaviors, habits, activation and patterns. The approach of brain-training is the system of learning awareness and individual control over bodily processes that are otherwise nonvoluntary processes by using a clinical instrument. Who is this training for? The benefits of brain-training with the HEG or the EEG vary. It is not always used to treat disorders. The individuals that are most likely to gain from the training are individuals who desire more control. Training Brain-training with the HEG or EEG could be considered a progressive but subtle approach to learning control in brain-behaviors. The HEG is a measure of local blood flow in the brain (Swingle, 2017). The EEG measure electrical current in the brain. Where both instruments measure some form of brain activation. The devices assist us to identify where the brain is activated, and how much activation is taking place. We then can move onto working on controlling these areas and how much activation takes place. Brain training relies on the dedication, concentration, and self- control of the trainee. Neurofeedback may generate long-term brain changes (Dias, Van Deusen, Oda & Bonfim, 2012). Methods of Action There are two methods to behavior that we use while in the brain-training session: 1. Cognitive process / information processing. 2. The use of sensitive feeling (Serra- Sala, Timoneda-Gallart & Perez-Alvarez, 2016). Important steps in brain-training are seeing, learning and awareness. Brain changes start with movements, and when we become aware of movements and learn how to make certain movements, we can establish positive long-term changes in our brain functioning. Functioning that can be the focus of brain-training include depression, anxiety, hyper/hypoactivity, impulsiveness, concentration, emotion, behavior, reaction/response, attention, sleep, irritability, or processing.   • 2. ` “Brain-Training works to recast your baseline” (brain-trainer.com, 2020). Disorders Brain-training is a process that may assist with disorders and symptoms such as eating dysregulation, cognitive decline, attention- deficit/hyperactivity disorder, affective conditions (e.g. mania, depression), ASD, OCD, sleep-wake cycle disorders, PTSD and trauma. Brain-training can also be used for cognitive enhancement, memory, impulse control, cognitive reserve, brain resilience, increased cognitive capacity, and cognitive improvements (Brain-trainer.com, 2020; Swingle, 2017). Brain-training using the HEG is known to be a “slower moving signal.” Using the HEG is an easier form of feedback to gain and see instant control (Dias, Van Deusen, Oda & Bonfim, 2012). The client is directed to voluntarily change their psychological or physical approaches and habits to produce a more refined control over brain activation and/or brain waves. This process can be “the go-to” for many needs and desires of the modern-day child or adult. Approaches in brain training: 1. Education – Learn about the feedback you will create/see. Set goals for your trainings, learn what you can work on when “connected” to the HEG. 2. Practice – Begin training. Wear the device, acknowledge your current functioning, envision your goals. See the feedback, began to work towards betterment. 3. Counsel – talk about results, findings and new goals. Brain Training – Shaping Habit and The Feedback Loop Brain-training is sometimes referred to as neurofeedback. It is a clinical, evidence-based approach that depends on one’s application of control to adjust their performance and functioning. It uses counseling and clinical programs to assist us to achieve better functioning in many areas. The results of brain-training are both instant and long-term, this assists us to learn about our behaviors quickly, and too, it assists us to make the brain changes and changes in our habits that we need to reach a higher level of health. “Noticeable changes taking place within 2 weeks of beginning sessions.” Treatment Schedule: Brain- training 1-3 times per week. 1. 15-45 minute training sessions. 2. 15-30 minute training consultation. Schedule can last 2-months-1 year depending on treatment goals.
