7 Ways to Boost Brain Cognitive Function_ Tips for Enhancing Mental Performan...Nazma Ansari
In today's fast-paced world, where demands on our cognitive abilities are ever-increasing, nurturing our brain health is paramount. Cognitive function serves as the cornerstone of our capacity to adapt, learn, and thrive in various environments. As we age, preserving and enhancing cognitive abilities becomes even more crucial to maintain quality of life and independence. Through the exploration of these seven strategies, we aim to provide actionable insights into how individuals can harness the power of their minds to overcome cognitive challenges and optimize mental performance. By understanding the interplay between lifestyle factors and brain health, individuals can embark on a journey toward cognitive vitality and resilience. Each strategy discussed in this article offers a multifaceted approach to enhancing cognitive function, addressing not only the physiological aspects of brain health but also the psychological and social components. From the rejuvenating effects of sleep to the cognitive benefits of physical exercise, the nourishing properties of a healthy diet, the calming influence of mindfulness meditation, the invigorating power of mental stimulation, the stress-relieving techniques for managing life's pressures, and the enriching experiences of social interaction, these strategies work synergistically to fortify cognitive function on multiple levels. As we delve deeper into the realm of cognitive enhancement, it becomes evident that empowering individuals with the knowledge and tools to optimize brain health is essential for fostering a society where everyone can thrive mentally, emotionally, and intellectually. Through continued exploration and implementation of these strategies, we can unlock the full potential of our brains and pave the way for a brighter, more cognitively resilient future.
Moreover, these strategies not only serve to enhance cognitive function but also contribute to overall brain resilience and longevity. By adopting a holistic approach to brain health, individuals can create an environment conducive to cognitive flourishing, promoting neuroplasticity and neurogenesis—the brain's remarkable ability to adapt and grow throughout life. Furthermore, the benefits extend beyond individual well-being, as improved cognitive function can have ripple effects across various aspects of society, including education, healthcare, and the workforce. Empowering individuals with the knowledge & tools to optimize their cognitive abilities is not just a personal endeavor but a collective responsibility—one that can lead to a more vibrant, innovative, and thriving community. As we navigate the complexities of modern life, investing in cognitive enhancement becomes an investment in our collective future, where mental acuity, creativity, and resilience are valued and celebrated. Mindfulness
Enhancing mental health in the law
As a litigation lawyer, I often
found myself over-engineering
courtroom scenarios in my head
and when things didn’t go to plan
it would retrospectively cause me
mental angst.
Many of my friends practising law are burnt
out and share these sentiments, with some
maintaining that whilst they may have the
resilience to adequately deal with stress in
the workplace, they are seeing an influx
of their colleagues taking stress leave and
suffering from anxiety and depression.
Recent studies show that one in five
Australian employees have taken time off
work due to feeling mentally unwell in the
past 12 months and that untreated mental
health conditions cost Australian workplaces
approximately $10.9 billion per year.1
What is mindfulness?
You can be forgiven for being a little flippant
when you hear the term mindfulness, as it
seems to be the ‘buzzword’ used by every
self-proclaimed personal development guru
out there. In essence though, mindfulness is
simply the psychological process of bringing
our complete and undivided attention to our
internal and external experiences, as they are
occurring in the present moment.
What are the benefits?
The benefits of practising mindfulness are
abundant. From a mental health perspective,
it is a simple, non-prescriptive measure
that can be used to alleviate stress, anxiety,
depression, chronic pain and addiction.
Generally speaking, practising mindfulness
vastly improves mental health and
performance in the course of our personal
and professional lives.
Where’s the evidence?
As a lawyer I insisted; show me the
evidence! So I did some research and
found that a technique known as functional
magnetic resonance imaging, used to detect
blood flow in the brain, confirms that when
people are practising mindfulness, only
the pre-frontal cortex becomes enlivened.
This is the part of the brain associated with
awareness, attention, control, concentration
and decision making.
With prolonged practice, mindfulness
increases neuroplasticity, which in turn
enhances mental agility and performance.
It is because of this scientific evidence –
transcending it from a mere ‘buzzword’ to
being a credible and powerful tool to enhance
mental health – that we now have a range
of successful CEOs, business professionals
and leading institutions utilising mindfulness
to enhance their performance.2
The question I then asked myself was:
“If these successful bodies and people are
using mindfulness to reduce stress and
enhance their performance, why aren’t I?”
How can I start
practising mindfulness?
Daily meditation
The most powerful tool we know that can
be used to practise mindfulness is meditation.
I’ve personally been meditating for ten years
now and don’t believe I’d be able to get
through my day without it. It anchors my being
to everything that is important in my life and
has taught me.

activities scientifically developed to
keep aging minds sharp.
The Cognitive Therapeutics Method™
is a science-
based activities program designed to support brain
health by slowing the progression of cognitive aging.
Home Care Assistance extensively trains caregivers in
the Method so they keep our clients mentally sharp
and help protect cognitive health. While changes in
cognitive functioning are a normal part of aging, there
are proactive ways for older adults to stay cognitively
healthy for longer.
The Cognitive Therapeutics Method
stimulates the five cognitive domains.
Activities in the Cognitive Therapeutics Method
are based on scientific evidence indicating how
cognitive training forms new connections in the
brain to maintain functioning. The Method exercises
not only memory, but all five domains of the brain
that have been shown to be affected by cognitive
aging. These five domains are illustrated in the
diagram to the right.
Executive Functioning includes cognitive abilities
such as reasoning, problem solving, judgement and
thought flexibility.
Attention refers to the ability to focus on a specific
piece of information for a long period of time while
ignoring competing distractions.
Language refers to the ability to execute verbal
functions, including spontaneous speech, speech
repetition, speech comprehension, naming, reading
