                                                What Foods are in Each?

   Category                                                           This group contains:
     Fruits                All fresh, frozen, canned, and dried fruits, and fruit juices. Examples include: oranges and orange juice,
                           apples and apple juice, bananas, grapes, melons, berries, and raisins.

  Vegetables
                           All fresh, frozen, and canned dark green vegetables, cooked or raw. Examples include broccoli; spinach;
Dark green vegetables      romaine lettuce; collard, turnip, and mustard greens.

                           All fresh, frozen, and canned orange and deep yellow vegetables; either cooked or raw. Examples include:
Orange vegetables          carrots, sweet potatoes, winter squash, and pumpkin.

                           All cooked, dry beans and peas, and soybean products. Examples include: pinto beans, kidney beans,
Legumes                    lentils, chickpeas, and tofu.

                           All fresh, frozen, and canned starchy vegetables. Examples include: white potatoes, corn, and green peas.
Starchy Vegetables
    Grains
                           All whole-grain products and whole grains used as ingredients. Examples include: whole-wheat and rye
Whole grains               breads, whole-grain cereals and crackers, oatmeal, and brown rice.

                           All refined grain products and refined grains used as ingredients. Examples include: white breads,
Other grains               enriched grain cereals and crackers, enriched pastas, and white rice.

     Milk                  All milks, yogurts, frozen yogurts, dairy desserts, and cheeses (except cream cheese). This includes
                           lactose-free and lactose-reduced products. Most choices should be fat-free or low-fat.

     Meat                  All meat, fish, and poultry, eggs, dry beans, tofu, peanut butter, and nuts and seeds.
