▪ Definition of a headwork.
▪ Difference b/w headwork and barrage.
▪ Head works in Sindh, Punjab and KPK
▪ Barrages in Punjab
▪ Salient features of all headworks in Pakistan.
▪ A hydraulic structure which supplies and diverts water to the off taking canal is
called HEADWORK..
▪ Reduces fluctuations in the level of supply in river
▪ Rises the water level
▪ Regulates the intake of water into the canal
▪ Store water for small periods of time
(water diversion from the river into
the canal successfully and efficiently )
(dam is constructed across a river
valley to form a storage reservoir)
2 Types of Headwork’s
Diversion Headwork’s Storage Headwork’s
Headwork's:
Built on river or water course b/w two banks at the same level of river to control
water, distribute it through canals for irrigation or otherpurpose of supplying water
Barrage:
Designed in such a way so that it could increase the water level and serve as a
storage
Electricity can be produced at a barrage after construction of hydro power plants
but could not be at a head work.

In KPK there is only 1 headwork MUNDA HEADWORK
MUNDA Headwork
• Mohmand Dam (previously Known MUNDA)
• Status: Under Construction.
• Reconstruction : 02 May 2019
• will generate 800 MW of hydroelectricity
• located on the Swat River and Panjkora River
• Irrigate 15,100 acres of land
• Mohmand Dam is also expected to
protect Nowshera and Charsadda districts from
seasonal floods by storing peak flood water in its
reservoir and releasing it in dry seasons
